1. After I looked at R and B
magazines, I started to do a
template based briefly on their
design. I also decided how the
models were going to stand in the
photo shoot.

2. Again based on other
magazines I have seen, I did
a template of the contents
page and also decided to
jazz it up a bit with different
fonts and the word content.

3. Using Indesign started to make the article based on an article page I
saw. I decided to write the article before I designed the page so I
could design the page around the article.

4. I decided to change the layout of
the contents page. This was partly
because my “band” has 4 members
so the layout of the images needed
to change. Another reason for
doing it this way is that putting all
the images together means that I
do not have to split the list of
contents up. This would make it
easier for a reader to see the
contents at a glance, and easier to
find an article that interests them.
When I looked at other music
magazines, the most used layouts
were either all the images together
at the bottom, as I have done or all
the images down the side. Both of
these layouts keeps the bulk of the
contents together.

5. I also altered the layout of the article page having researched more music magazines. I
decided that these placements were more suitable. Initially I was using one large image,
but using a large number of smaller images looks more interesting and provides a better
insight into the personalities of the band members. I experimented with the font for the
title and subtitle and think that my choice of urban jungle for the title and retro hand for
the subtitle are effective as they are similar enough to go together well, but different
enough to complement each other. I have placed the titles asymmetrically to add interest

6. The basic layout of the
cover hasn’t changed very
much here but I decided on
the magazine title “Rock
Riot” and used the same
font as the title of the
article for consistency, and
make this work look like a
complete package. I chose
white on black because the
contrast makes the title
jump out at the reader. I’ve
inserted the banner for the
lead article, again the
colour was chosen to
contrast with the magazine
title and to stand out
against the rest of the
colour scheme. The stripey
idea comes from images
like this
I thought it symbolised a bad boy/banned appearance. I added images of 2
of my models, trying to coordinate colours and style of dress, to give them a
recognisable band style

7. I decided on the name of the band
“Rising Rock” which clearly shows their
genre but also gives the impression of a
band that is on its way up to fame and
fortune. The font I used was Hard rock
(appropriate!) and imitates the title of
the magazine without being identical.
The 2 R’s, both in the magazine title
and the band name, give alliteration,
which is easier to remember and gives
a stronger impression. I also placed the
templates for the barcode and headers
for other magazine contents. Having
these at the bottom balances the title,
particularly with the banner in the
middle of the page. The background is
no longer black. There are a few
reasons for this. Firstly, plain black
seemed a bit uninteresting and
overused, it also gave me a problem as
Chris’ beanie is black. I still wanted to
use a dark colour, and this one tones
with the models T shirts giving a good
overall finish to the page.

8. I used the same background colour on
the contents page for the same reasons,
and also that it connects the 2 pages
effectively as they have an overall colour
theme. Previously, I had the basic layout
of 4 columns, so I decided to write
“contents” vertically too, to keep with that
theme. This also meant that the word
was not split in 2. I used hard rock font
for this too, to tie it in with the cover
page. I added an image of one of the
models using outerglow to make him
stand out from the similar coloured
background. The template for the editors
photo is in place and surrounded with a
red stroke. Together with the white
background for the Editors comment this
should stand out as something different.
On the following slide, I have put the title
page and contents page together to
check that they look like one product.
The colour scheme helps with this;
particularly the touches of red/white on
both pages.

10. I have inserted the barcode and the first of the
footers. I continued with the red/white theme
for consistency but also used a pale blue to
add more interest and to differentiate it from
the rest of the cover. I have planned what to
add to the other footers.

11. Back to the contents page, I have
added Greg's image, wearing different
clothes to the front cover, to add a bit
more variation. I have used red lines to
separate the columns that I will use for
the contents. This picks up the red
strokes from the editors section and
helps tie the whole page together
