Conflict In Jaws
The opening scenes of the film Jaws (Steven Spielberg 1975), one of the main characters chief
Martin Brody is introduced. Chief Brody is new to the town and main concern is keeping the people
and the water safe. The mayor main concern at first is to keep the revenue coming in, which is
keeping the beaches open for visitors. The small town Amity Island, a fictional New England town,
busy season is the summer. The films primary conflict, which is a series of shark attacks in a small
time frame, is what drives the film to the main turning point. However, by the end of the film we see
Chief Brody's character change drastically to achieve the town's main goal, which is to have the
beaches safe for visitors. In ACT 1 of the film the exposition (opening scenes of the film), illustrates
the kind of character chief Brody is. Chief ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, his level on commitment to the issue is displayed through his increased efforts to
eliminate the shark from the waters. Instead of just letting the fisherman do the job on his own he
insists to go with him to help kill the shark. The motivation for this change was to ensure the people
that the right shark that was attacking the people was killed. I saw a significant change in the level
of motivation after the scene when the mother of one of the victims confronts him. The cues that
draw attention to this change was when even though he is scared of the water he still goes along to
help. Another major cue that lead me to believe the character has changed when he didn't give up
after he thought he was the only one left to kill the shark. He pushed his fear of the water aside and
defeated the shark in the last few minutes of the film (fig. 4,5 & 6.) The scene were he is happy he
killed the shark was up lifting because after all the unfortunate events that has happened a happy
ending made watching the film worth

Fear Depicted In Steven Spielberg's Film Jaws
Swimming in the ocean on a beautiful beach, the sun shining, the water is the perfect temperature,
you have zero worries in the world. Until you feel a bump on your leg and notice someone on shore
screaming and pointing in your direction, duh dum. You bring yourself out of your reverie and
notice a very large fin protruding from the water moving towards you, duhh dumm. Your heart starts
racing as you frantically think of your chances of being able to swim away from this monster
coming your direction with increasing speed, duh dum dum dum dum. With simple notes of a tuba,
John Williams could amplify the fear portrayed in Steven Spielberg's movie Jaws (1975). These
simple notes would carry on to be a standard to symbolize something terrifying ... Show more

John Towner Williams was born in New York City on February 8, 1932. He acquired his love of
music from his father who was a musician in the city. His passion for music took a three year hiatus
when Williams was drafted in the U.S. Airforce in 1951, after which he returned to New York City
to work as a jazz pianist while attending the Julliard School of Music. It was during his studies in
Julliard where Williams decided to become a composer, humorously because he thought the
competition for concert pianists was too high. After graduating from Julliard he moved to Los
Angeles in the 1950s and began working as a movie studio musician. He worked as a pianist for a
few years before given the opportunity to start composing his own music: Gilligan's Island and Lost
in Space were some he had a part in composing. This was also around the same time that he started
working with the big screen movies as well. He received an Academy Award nomination for Valley
of the Dolls (1967), then went on to win an Academy Award for his music in Fiddler on the Roof
(1972). This was when things got interesting for Williams, the meeting and future collaboration with

Jaws Film Techniques
Jaws (1975)
Media Coursework
Peter Benchley wrote "Jaws" the novel before it was made into a film directed by Steven Spielberg.
"Jaws" is a thriller/horror with the main aim being to build up suspense and tension. When making
the film Jaws Steven Spielberg had to face the challenging task of translating Benchley's popular
novel into a hit movie whilst still maintaining the suspense created through the many textual devices
used by Benchley, such as language techniques and sentence structure. Spielberg managed use
different camera angles and shots alongside lighting effects to create atmosphere and tension to
pretty much the same effect. In the background he uses music and sound effects to add to the
dramatic visual images he creates. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another interesting point is as Chrissie is removing her clothes while running it is almost as she is
leaving herself exposed to potential danger and making herself more vulnerable. At this point as the
viewer sees Chrissie isolated in the water they realise that she is facing danger only limited by their
own imagination.
As Chrissie continues swimming, the frame changes to a point of view shot, accompanied by the
same music as in the opening shot. The audience's thoughts change immediately from the images of
the cheerful beach party to the earlier reference of the shark in the opening sequence. This provides
a very effective contrast. The audience's expectations are realised when Chrissie feels a sharp pain,
and then begins splashing about in the water as she is attacked.
The unseen shark thrashes her around in the water, and she eventually clings onto a buoy, making its
bell ring, in a vain attempt to alert the nearby community. After a final grasp for breath, she finally
disappears under the surface of the water leaving the viewers with the burden of her death.
The second victim of the shark is a young boy named Alex, this time the scene is set in along the
beach, crowded with people enjoying the long Independence Day holiday. Also on the beach is
police chief Brody with his own family. Sunbathers lie on the packed beach. This is a very unlikely
place and time for an eventful scene. Again the

Terrifying Events in the Ocean in Steven Spielberg's...
Clenching teeth, defined facial bone structure and fine dentistry; the title of Steven Spielberg's
classic film Jaws paints quite a mental picture for its viewers with many possibilities. Along with the
title, the original film poster used to promote Jaws was visually colorful and terrifying all at the
same time. The poster indicates an oversized great white shark lurking in the dark depths of the sea,
looking up towards the surface at a swimmer. Waiting and watching, the imagery of the poster gives
the viewer the feeling that the shark is waiting for just the right moment to attack with its powerful
bone–crushing jaws. What makes this film so interesting and captivating is that for over half of
Spielberg's film the protagonist, the shark, is nowhere to be seen. The way Steven Spielberg
incorporates and mixes powerful and suspenseful music with his brilliant editing of the film, as well
as the composition, allows viewers to believe there is an actual shark, even though the shark is out
of sight. Steven Spielberg's film Jaws was influenced and inspired by the fictional novel Jaws
written by Peter Benchley. With a few changes to better the cinematography, the film portrayed the
novel and followed its outline very closely. Jaws the film had become America's very first
blockbuster hit (Quarterly). Not only had it became such a success, but it had also instilled fear into
the lives of many of its viewers. Benchley has stated that Spielberg "had tapped a profound,

Jaws Film Analysis
Jaws premiered on June 20, 1975. Steven Spielberg directed the film, accompanied by screenwriters
Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb. Jaws has many film techniques that accompany the main
characters. The main characters of the filmed are played by Roy Scheider (Brody), Robert Shaw
(Quint), Richard Dreyfuss (Matt Hooper), and Murray Hamilton (Mayor Larry Vaughn). Director
Steven Spielberg uses many different film techniques to emphasize different scenes in the movie and
command the audience's attention to the screen. The analysis of the film involves examining the
theatrical elements and the thematic content. The film takes place on Amity Island. The plot starts
when a woman goes missing that is later found dead on the beach. It is discovered ... Show more

To start, Jaws uses rough–grained film stock to give high contrasts between the whites and the
blacks. This technique is useful for this film because of the setting it takes place in. This type of film
stock was successful because of the beach environment that had to be conveyed through the screen.
The cinematography of the film ties all the aspects of the movie together flawlessly. Many different
camera angles are used during the film including objective and subjective camera angles. Musical
accompaniments in Jaws are written to suit the different events that take place in the film. Included
in the film is diegetic and non–diegetic sounds for the purpose of improving the reality of the film.
This is exhibited as the suspenseful music is played whenever the shark begins to appear. The
lighting in the film is mostly natural. This makes filming a bit more difficult. However, the
cinematographer still manages to film a movie of astounding visual quality for the day and age the
film was released in. In addition, the film's main characters are round and are dynamic adding
further complexity. Therefore, the film is pieced together in a way that fits the look, feel, and sound
of the film together

Jaws and Jurassic Park Films
Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975) and his other film Jurassic Park (1993) both contain a major theme
of what makes a successful hero in society. In Jaws, police chief Martin Brody must successfully
eliminate the threat of a Great White Shark from attacking Amity Island. In Jurassic Park, billionaire
John Hammond creates a theme park where cloned dinosaurs come alive, hoping that his ideal resort
becomes a major success. Through the use of film style elements, such as editing and mise–en
scene, Spielberg develops Brody's character as a person who must learn from his past mistakes in
order to become a successful hero while Spielberg creates Hammond's character as a man who only
sees himself as a hero of science and technology without realizing ... Show more content on

This contrast in lighting direction is another indicator of the inherent problem with Jurassic Park.
The major use of backlighting on Grant represents the "dark side" of Jurassic Park as Hammond's
plan to resurrect dangerous animals such as the Velociraptor for entertainment purposes while
suppressing nature is what leads to the park's and Hammond's demise because Hammond can not
possibly re–create vicious predators from the past and suppress them in artificial environments for
profit. Hammond did not envision Jurassic Park as a dangerous place or a violation of nature but as
a triumph of scientific research and sees himself as a heroic figure of science. The lighting set–up
used on Dr. Wu represents the opposing side to Grant's views on Jurassic Park, which would be
Hammond's view. If Hammond can get the best minds of the cloning field like Dr. Wu to help him
realize his dream resort then he is surely an inspiring figure to the scientific community. Whereas
Brody could see the problems that were literally sitting in front of him and learn from them to
become a hero, Hammond does not even question what he sees and his decision to ignore what
others have to say about his accomplishments only initiate his eventual failure as a role–model of
science.

Plot of the Film
After a skinny dip late in the night on Amity Island, there is a disappearance of a young woman. The
following morning, parts of her body wash up on the Island's shores. This prompts Martin Brody,
the police chief, to believe that she was attacked by a shark and in effect, orders closing of the
beaches. 24 hours later, the beaches are opened again. This follows concerns of the mayor and the
medical examiner who brand the incident as an accident caused by a boat. The two value the
economy of the town than the safety of the public. According to the mayor, the beaches should be
open because the weekend of 4th of July is very busy and lucrative. On a second incident, a young
boy suffers the same fate. His mother promises to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

4th.Another victim is killed at the beach as a son to Brody narrowly escapes attack. Quint promises
to kill the animal for $15,000. The mayor finally admits there is a problem and hires him for the job.
Technical Composition of the Movie
Gottlieb & Benchley (2010) point out that "Jaws" was directed by Steven Spielberg. Starring in the
movie included Craig Kingsbury, Jeffrey Voorhees, Lee Fierro, Jay Mello, Chris Robello, Ted
Grossman, Jonathan Filley, Susan Backlinie, Jeffrey Kramer, Carl Gottlieb, Murray Hamilton,
Lorraine Gary, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw, and Roy Scheider. The director of the film,
Spielberg, applied key editing techniques. For instance, he applied the techniques in segueing from
one scene of the film to another. This is evident in the movie's first half where in most instances; the
director uses transitions that have intentional shock to the audience so as to achieve suspense in the
film. The director went on to edit some parts of the film to satisfy the feeling he wanted to create in
it. For example, after a preview, he detected that requisite jumps were not delivered by the instance
where Ben Gardner's corpse was

Quint As An Anti-Hero In The Film Jaws
After the shark kills again, the sheriff begins to read up on sharks and decides to call a special
scientist that is an expert on sharks. Brody and Hooper (the scientist) charter a boat with the famous
shark hunter, Quint, to find and kill this shark and save the town from financial disaster. The level of
terror in this town and in the audience grows throughout this movie. Eventually Brody, Hooper and
Quint are forced to spend the end portion of this film isolated at sea, hunting this shark.
Robert Shaw's Quint is considered one of the most "anti–heroes" the movies ever saw. He is funny
and frightening at the same time. He seems to have many demons that haunt him. He is a bit of an
outsider in the town and more of a loner. "Quint has a glove ... Show more content on

He plays the conscientious and dedicated scientist and excited to encounter this giant of the sea.
Dreyfuss portrays Hooper as brash and pretty brave. He comes from money. "Hooper talks and
reacts quicker than anyone else in Jaws, with speedier details, and the actor, Richard Dreyfuss, has
kinetic features, (Quirke 33). He has more in common with Quint than Brody. However, his
friendship with Brody becomes a major part of the movie. "Hooper finds Brody and asks Quint.
"No" says Brody. They had been friends, you know. But these two are glad to be alive and when
they laugh together it's a laugh that acknowledges luck, which comprehends rather than runs away
from death" (Quirke 91). This deviates from the novel with the character of Hooper who was
originally Brody's nemesis. The character of Hooper was actually rewritten to better suit the actor.
Spielberg wanted Hooper to fit himself because he viewed Dreyfus as his "alter–ego". This role was
considered his best in his acting career. The dynamics between Hooper and Brody explained well on
page 77, "When Hooper and Brody tie the barrels to the stern it's sign of what a well oiled team
they've become...Most of the dialogue is now overdubbed and so exhilarates things–its become
commentary rather than conversation,"(Quirke

The Great White Shark, By Paul J. Crutzen And Eugene F....
In the early 2000s, the 'Anthropocene' emerged as a widespread term to represent the current era of
Earth's history. According to Paul J. Crutzen and Eugene F. Stoermer, the 'Anthopocene' represents a
"geologic epoch" characterized by human activities that profoundly transform the environment,
threaten ecosystems, and cause unparalleled disruptions on earth's natural processes. (Ogden et al.
2013: 341) Unfortunately, humanity in the period of the 'Anthropocene' has contributed to a range of
environmental problems, including pollution and mass extinctions. (Ogden et al. 2013: 341) One
ancient species considerably at risk in the 'Anthropocene' is the Great White Shark. Despite its
precarious position and its imminent eradication, the Great White Shark must be respected and
understood. In an attempt to reveal the intrinsic value of the oceans' most important predator,
humans must shed conceptions of Great White Sharks as mindless man–eating monsters and instead
conceive of them in a new light. Ultimately, a thorough exploration reveals Great Whites inherent
value independent of their worth to humans. Furthermore, it serves as an important framework for
thinking about the harmful consequences human practices have the environment. Ultimately, this
examination changes humankinds attitudes towards the Great White and dispels popular myths to
reveal that all species are fundamentally related and share a common destiny.
Great White Sharks are the "largest predatory fish" and

Movie Analysis : ' The Film ' Jaws '
"Duh dun...Duh dun...Duh dun, duh dun, duh dun." When you hear the famous two–note theme
from the classic summer blockbuster Jaws, your heart immediately picks up and instantly visions of
a massive, man eating shark pop into your head. In 1975, Jaws terrified beachgoers everywhere with
the bone chilling thought of a vicious great white shark lurking just below their feet, threatening to
attack every person it came in contact with. Swimmers were haunted by the image of the film's
poster, which displayed a swimmer just within reach of the colossal beast's jaws. The poster did its
job in conveying the terror it wanted to instill in its viewers for the sake of the film, but was it an
accurate depiction of reality? In this 2015 ad, WildAid parodies the poster from the classic film Jaws
to paint humans as the real monster when it comes to human–shark interactions. With the inclusion
of a striking statistic and by creating a parallel between the vicious shark from the film and those of
the shark finning industry, WildAid shifts the blame in order to raise awareness for their cause and
focus on the real victim.
At first glance, one might just see this ad as the Jaws poster, but something draws you to take a
closer look. The word "laws," put in large, bright red, bold font, invites the viewer to take a closer
look. This is no accident. By putting "laws" in such a prominent position, it focuses on the main goal
and purpose of the advertisement, just as the title of the movie would have

Jaws: The Quintessence Of Classical Hollywood Film
Almost every Hollywood movie follows a set tradition. The Hollywood movies have recurring
elements in almost everyone. Each Hollywood movie has the same format and setup, but this does
not make it a classical movie like the Wizard of Oz. It is no walk in the park creating a Classical
movie. Jaws is the quintessence of Classical Hollywood Cinema. It is a great suspenseful classical
movie that will beat out the test of time. Two main element in narrative Hollywood cinema are
focusing on main character, and that main character solving a goal. The movie, Jaws, revolves
around Sherriff Brody, and his struggle to protect the beaches from a shark. Once there is a goal
defined, there is opposition. The opposition keeps the protagonist from meeting ... Show more

Psychological events for main characters can motivate them to accomplish their goals. Sherriff
Brody had a traumatizing event when the little boy wearing red shorts is eaten by the shark. The
widow mom blames Sherriff Brody for knowing that there was a shark, and not shutting down the
beaches. A deadline is set for every Hollywood movie. The deadline leads to the emotional climax.
The deadline in Jaws is when they go to kill the shark at the end. Hollywood narrated movies tend to
be shown objectively. This means that the character's actions are what we see. We do not get to be in
the character's psyche all the time. An objective scene in Jaws is when they are sitting around the
campfire and listening to music. A subjective scene is when the shark swims toward the nude girl in
the ocean to eat her. We are able to envision what the shark sees. Finally, Classical Hollywood
Narrative movies like to have closure. There are no cliffhangers or open ended questions once the
movie is over. The main character resolves the issue. In Jaws, Sherriff Brody kills the shark, and
then swims to shore. Classical Hollywood movies tend to follow this

There's more to a good movie than most people think. Judgement comes down to personal taste. A
good movie will have, not just interesting but inspiring characters. Characters that, while watching
the film, will make us empathize and care about what happens to them throughout their cinematic
journey throughout the film. It allows the audience to converse about their views on who were the
good guys and who were the bad. This let's us, as the audience, to continue and embellish on the
film with our own imaginations.
Another component that makes a movie good is the story itself. Is it believable? Are we watching

Sometimes others are easier to point out. American Beauty, about Lester a depressed suburban father
in a mid–life crisis, decides to turn his hectic life around after developing an infatuation for his
daughter's attractive friend, Angela. This recurring theme of the color "red" sparks in the beginning
of the movie when we first see their front house door red, when Lesters wife is planting red roses in
the garden, Lester's red car, in almost every room in the home and in just about every scene of the
movie. Whenever Lester begins to have sexual fantasies about Angela, rose petals appear. Perhaps
the first thing to focus on first, is the use of color and motif. Throughout the entire film, the rose, the
American Beauty, had often been a symbol of Lester's lust and desire for Angela. In his fantasies,
the girl is shrouded in the roses, covering her body, betraying the fact that these are, in fact, his
passionate musings rather than reality. When Lester is killed however, the viewer can spot a bunch
of roses set on the countertop next to his body. The image is striking; because the flower had been so
associated with sexuality and infatuation, it seems somewhat odd for it to reappear in death.
However, let us not forget, the significance red represents in cinema danger. Is it because it's the

The lure of the sandy beaches appeals to people worldwide. Television shows, movies and the draw
of the beach lifestyle have a universal attraction that one can't help but want to visit. The sun, surf,
barbeques, nothing could ruin a day like that; nothing but a fin in the water. Most beach goers have
not experienced seeing a shark fin in the water, let alone a shark attack. Sharks may be in the close
proximity where humans are but they don't actively go hunting for humans. Media has fed into mass

Suspense in the Film Jaws
In this essay I will be analysing the film Jaws. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg whose
other works include Indiana Jones and E.T. Jaws is a fascinating and entertaining film mainly
because of its interesting and diverse plot. The people of Amity Island used to live a peaceful and
quiet life in the small summer resort town in America. Now however, the people of the small town
have become victim to a man–eating Great White Shark. The town officials hesitate to warn people
about the shark for fear of losing business during their busiest time of year, Fourth of July weekend.
Therefore the shark is kept quiet from the town until a child is attacked in broad daylight ... Show

For instance, whenever an attack occurs, the music ends up being extremely fast, then slowing
considerably and then stopping altogether resulting in complete silence. This silence after each
attack frightens the audience because they realise how quickly something awful, like the event they
have just witnessed, can happen and how quickly it can end. It also reminds them that the shark is
still out there and will continue to carry out these attacks. In addition, before the first attack occurs a
group of teenagers are having a bonfire and at this point someone is playing a mouth organ. When
the boy and the girl run off, we suddenly hear the sound of the mouth organ gently disappearing.
This shows that the two are travelling away from safety and peace into the abyss of the dark sea
where they are unaware of what is lurking there. It also signifies how alone and desolate they are.
The second attack occurs on a crowded beach, a venue where everyone feels safe. Contrary to
popular belief this is not true though, as recent studies have shown that Great White Sharks are often
found in just three feet of water. This supposedly safe environment is emphasised with a mid shot
that gives a good perspective of a relaxed environment with people enjoying the sun and generally
having a good time. A dolly zoom on Brody shows an anxious face that is not completely satisfied

chief that has been assigned to a hot resort on one of New England Coast's beaches. His job is to
make sure that the killer shark, which has already eaten a person in this area, does not have a chance
to attack again.
The film is set on the 4th of July because it is a national holiday in America – The Independence

After the attack and the disturbing music the 'dead' silence came. This is to highlight the fact that the
girl has been killed in a very brutal and painful way and that nobody could help her, even if they
wanted to. It also tells the audience that the shark is creepy, awful and unstoppable. This shark
characterisation helped the director to build tension more effectively before the future attacks.
Just like silence, music can also be used to scare the audience. An example of this is the loudness of
the theme tune increasing as the shark is getting closer to its prey. It tells us that the attack is about
to begin and lets us know that the person attacked will die, we know that he or she could not survive
as previous victims had not survived.
In the second attack a lot of camera techniques have been used to help build tension and scare the
audience. The scene began with a straight, long shot of a 10 year old boy, Alex, going to his mother
to ask for more time in the water. The straight shot was used to show equality, to make the audience
feel as they are in the same place with all tourists on the beach. This did not build any tension
because nothing was going to happen at that point. The audience might wonder why so much time is
spent with Alex, why we are continously focused on him, not on any of the other boys – this starts to

The Ways that the Director Builds Suspense and Scares the Audience in the Film JAWS The film
JAWS was directed by Steven Spielberg and is about the struggle of men trying to defeat a great
threat in the shape of a shark. It is set in small town of Amity in 1974.This is a classic horror film
structure imitating for example, Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Birds' (1963). From normality comes fear.
The main part of the film is set on the 4th July, which is independence day, the significance of this is
being that there would be a lot of people their and it is something to build up to. This could also
signify the shark's total independence, contrasting with the main characters who must depend upon

Music is used throughout the film effectively and is often used a lot during an attack. In the 4th July
attack the music playing on the radio behind is an uplifting and enjoyable music which gives the
audience a false sense of security and also acts as a contrast to the sharks theme. During the second
attack camera angles are used to build tension and are also used to help the audience create and
emotional attachment with the victims. While the boy is walking up the beach to his mother the use
a mid shot which is to show that he is the next victim, you also see that he is wearing a red
swimming costume which is to symbolise danger. Such colour symbolism is used throughout the
film as emotional pointers. As the boy asks his mother if he can stay in for another ten minutes an
extreme close up is used showing that these ten minutes are going to be significant; and it is also the
use of dramatic irony as the ten minutes are going to be his last. As Brody is watching the water a
point of view shot is used. It is used very well to show his anxiety and also his commitment to his
job. Spielberg effectively uses every scene to further develop character, as here, or to advance the
story. Also during this scene there are quite a few close up shots this is also to show enhancing his
anxiety and feelings of hopelessness.

How Does the Director Try to Build Suspense and Scare the...
How does the director try to build suspense and scare the audience in the film Jaws?
The film Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg, was created approximately 30 years ago. It tells the
story of a shark which attacks and kills numerous people off the north–east coast of the USA in a
small holiday resort called Amity Island. The attacks took place around the 4th of July, which in
America, is similar to the British bank holiday. During this time, many Americans and tourists from
abroad visit resorts such as Amity Island for a summer vacation.
The director of the film, Steven Spielberg builds up fear of the shark using many different
techniques. One of these techniques is the use of music. Spielberg uses a non–diegetic piece of
music which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Again, as after the first attack on Chrissie, the audience can't believe how something so terrible is
happening when the mood set by the little boy is so calm and untroubled. This use of music and
contrasting emotions builds up tension and fear affecting the audience as it makes them feel
confused, as they can't understand how things can be so pleasant then suddenly so devastating.
Spielberg also exploits various camera techniques to build up fear and suspense in the film Jaws.
For example, during the second attack on Alex, a lot of different camera techniques and angles are
being used. The start of the scene is a tracking shot, showing Alex coming out of the sea and sitting
next to his mother on the beach. After some persuasion, his mother lets him have just 10 more
minutes in the water. Then a further tracking shot is used, as we follow Alex up the beach as he goes
and gets his lilo. The use of this camera angle, which focuses the audience's attention on Alex,
immediately makes them feel more attached to the character.
The next part of the scene shows Alex running into the sea on his lilo. The camera technique used
for this part is a medium shot from a reverse angle, showing him from behind. This camera angle
builds up fear as all the audience can see is Alex on his lilo and the bearing sea in front of him with
no–one else in sight. This immediately makes the audience realise that Alex is vulnerable and that if

Why Did Steven Spielberg A Game Changer
A two time Oscar winner and a full time Visionary. Steven Allan Spielberg has directed over 100
films and still counting. Spielberg's dramatic directing style has been capturing audiences attentions
for over 50 years. He's changed the movie–going experience since day one. Steven Spielberg is a
game changer because he changed modern Cinema with his signature directing style and his iconic
DreamWorks logo. Steven Spielberg was born one year after World War 2 ended. Growing up
Jewish was hard for Spielberg. He often felt as if he was an outcast. He was one of the only Jews at
his school. He claims he has "Peter Pan Syndrome" meaning he never really grew up. He is still a
child at heart. He was scared of practically everything when he was young, and his creative mind
made every creak and bump in the night a terrifying new monster just waiting to lure him into the
darkness. Despite being afraid of most things in television, he was fascinated with all things movie.

He's had to go through extremely stressful scenarios to become the phenomenal director he is today.
In my opinion, the most important moment in his movie making carrier was directing Jaws. That
was the movie that started it all for Spielberg. When he was assigned the job of directing the 1974
novel by Peter Benchley, Steven's career was now recognized by big Hollywood studios. Very soon
production nightmares happened on the set of Jaws. Spielberg realized a very big problem, "We
started the film without a script, without a cast and without a shark" (Richard Dreyfus). Spielberg
was over budget, over schedule, and overwhelmed. The mechanical shark used in the film would
break due to the salt water so Spielberg had to come up with interesting ways to not show it. That is
why the movie rarely shows the shark. "The young director woke up every day fearing he

Steven Spielberg 's Film Jaws
Steven Spielberg's film "JAWS" (1975), (Spielberg/Universal), uses the motif of an essentially
unseen shark, ominously present through unpredictable displays of terrifying violence, to sculpt a
message about good, evil, power, arrogance, and vanity within the hegemony of small–town middle
class America. Spielberg markets this "High Concept" (Cook 40), film and its nationalist ideals on a
story that is principally based on one image, the shark, and the fallibility of the human decision
making process. In a relatively short scene that lasts no longer than a minute and a half, eleven or so
minutes into the film, the viewer is presented with the hierarchy of the town's political decision
making process, its hubris and the lack of concern for the physical safety of the common citizenry
over which they govern. The scene takes place on a small ferry boat in the town's harbor. The
previous evening there was an unwitnessed shark attack in the harbor water which killed a young
woman. The discussion on the ferry, held by the town's mayor, selectmen, medical examiner, and
police chief, is primarily between police chief Brody and Mayor Vaughn. Brody tells Vaughn that he
is going to shut the beach down, no swimming will be allowed because it is unsafe. The mayor tell
him that he, the police chief, does not have the authority to do so and that only he, the mayor, does

The Perception Of Sharks In The Film Jaws
The movie Jaws played a big role in the perception of how people look at sharks, Because they
showed the evil that sharks can do. When in reality, there's only 19 shark attacks each year and 2
fatality's every 2 years. The media portrays sharks as some evil demon like fish that once it see
anything it will eat it such as a boat, adults, kids, etc. Movies have depicted sharks by presenting
sharks in a evil in bad way that makes people think that because they have a lot of teeth in a big
mouth that they can just eat everything as it pleases. When in reality, the reason people get attacked
by sharks is because the way it looks to a shark underneath the water from below when someone is

Suspense : Horror Films Like Jaws ( 1975 ) And Psycho (...
Suspense is what fuels horror films. If the director was able to get you sitting on the edge of your
seat, holding your breath, and waiting, they did their job. It is why people go and see new horror
films. A lot of things factor into suspense in horror films, such as: plot, camera angles and shots,
setting, and information the audience may already know, but nothing is as directly correlated to
suspense as music and sound is. Sound is what makes a horror film scary. In the cases of some
classic horror films like Jaws (1975) and Psycho (1960), the music is sometimes more widely
recognized than the film itself. Music can also be an indicator that something bad is about to happen
or is going to happen in the not–so–distant future. Although there are a lot of ways that suspense can
be placed upon an audience, I will argue that music and sound, or the lack thereof, is the most
efficient way to create suspense and increase thrill. Music is a way to not only express feelings, but
also to create feelings in audiences. Music has a way of connecting memories to the song or melody
that is playing. It is like walking through the mall and getting a whiff of the perfume an old ex–
girlfriend wore; all of the memories flood back for a minute. Music has the same power. Songs that
a person has not heard in years can take them back to a specific moment and the memory will still
be vivid. I was fourteen years old when I first watched Insidious (2010). In the film, the song

Peter Benchley wrote "Jaws" the novel before it was made into a film directed by Steven Spielberg.
"Jaws" is a thriller with the main aim being to build up suspense and tension. In the novel Peter
Benchley uses many variations of language techniques to emphasise important points that build up
suspense. He also uses sentence and paragraph structure to affect the reader in many different ways.

The tempo and volume gradually increase with the intention of raising the viewer's heartbeat. This
increase also gives the effect that whatever is moving through the water is getting closer and
speeding up. Then all of a sudden a dramatic picture, from the shark's eye view appears, creeping
through the weeds on the seabed. The camera angle is very effective, as the audience moves through
the weeds with the shark. The dimly lit darkness of deep underwater which creates an unclear
picture has the effect of making the audience anxious as nobody knows what the shark is about to
find.
The instant that the picture appears, an abrupt increase in the tempo and the volume of the music
makes the viewer's heart leap. Amounting tension causes an adrenaline rush and makes the viewer
edgy. Suspense is created because the viewer knows that something will happen but does not know
when. When the music comes to a climax a horn joins in with the cellos. Horns are generally
associated with any kind of hunt and although the audience doesn't yet know that the shark is after
the girl the horn adds to the overall nervousness of the atmosphere. As screeching, slashing violins
can be heard the bold, glaring title Jaws appears in capital letters signalling the ultimate climax of
the tension. Just when the audience can't take

The second attack is on a small boy in the sea at a crowded beach on Amity Island. It starts with the
young boy asking his mother if he can go back into the sea. We then see Brody sat on the beach
watching out for sharks. The camera does a long shot of Brody's point of view, which we see a

At the same moment, as the first note is played, we see the first images of the film like the shark
looming out of the darkness and catching its prey unaware. Spielberg again gives the idea of the
unseen enemy, hunting, scraping perfection in his domain. As the camera smoothly shows the point
of view of the shark moving throughout the weeds, the music gradually builds up and gets louder as
well as faster, giving the impression that this shark is gaining confidence pushing its way through
the weeds with force and determination. The music gradually increases and a brass instrument plays
over the deep cello. At the end of this sequence a screech is heard tearing our ears, which reminds us
the fate of helpless people caught in the jaws of misfortune. Instinctively we are made to remember
this music. Spielberg intelligently makes us see the point of view of the predator. By not seeing the
shark, suspense is created leaving our imagination to wonder. The music provides a sense of hostile
presence as if an unseen, persistent predator is around the corner and both the music and hunter
cause panic and chaos without being seen.
Music and silence is again used effectively to build up tension

The camera technique used is a Medium Long Shot; this allows the audience to see the attack and
the surroundings in more detail.
The director builds up fear for the shark by making the music seem sly and dangerous. The director
also makes the music seem like the kind of music you would expect from a murder film. He also
builds tension by showing all the attacks in detail and comes quite at a distance so you can see just
what actually happens to the victims as if you were watching from the beach. However during the
film the shark is described as 25 feet long and weighing 3 tons, several time, this is in a way of
giving the audience clues and it even creates a picture in the audiences heads of what its finally
going to look like. In the film other sharks are also mentioned as well as the great White Shark,

The Narrator's Use Of Suspense In The Film Jaws
All is lost shows the persistence of the human spirit, in the ability to continue after adversity. The
opening shot places the protagonist in a life boat, at sea, startled from his reclined position as he line
snags. As he reels in the line the audience feels growing suspense as the protagonist has been stuck
at sea for days and if he has been able to successfully fish for food, we can feel optimistic for his
future at sea. The audience is rudely awakened when the suspense turns into horror, not the expected
delight, as a shark emerges from the water and takes his catch. Through this use of suspense and the
building of tension, the audience feels the protagonist's disappointment along with him. When the
protagonist tries to search for the sharks who stole his catch he cannot see them, no matter how hard
he tries. This can be seen as an allegory to the fact he cannot predict the future events to happen. He
is at the whim of the sea and to nature in general. This is further highlighted by a low angle shot
from beneath the life raft which shows the sharks circling the protagonist. The use of a low angle
shot in film gives power to the figure being shot. In this instance the sharks are in the position of
power, as they are the embodiment of nature in this scene. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

There is also no non–diegetic noise present in first parts of the scene, which means the audience

The Importance Of The Film Jaws
The film Jaws is deemed as one of the greatest movies of all time, it is not only a movie, but it
changed the movie industry due to its success. The success of Jaws is a result of the mass of
advertising the producers did. Jaws was the first film to have a "wide release", opening at the same
time across the country and making it the highest grossing film at the time. The vast amount of
detail the producers went into advertising can be seen in the Jaws' movie poster. Through the vivid
red title, the unseen shark in the ocean's depth, the unwitting and vulnerable woman, the use of
prominent actor's names, and the magnitude of the shark, the author uses a myriad of textual and
non–textual techniques that create both suspense and excitement for the film.
First, the author places the title "Jaws" in the center of the page in bright red letters, which causes
the title to stand to the viewer because the red lettering is an enormous contrast to the primarily blue
and white image. The author uses the placement and color of the title catch the eyes of the viewer.
For example, when looking at the image the viewer will notice the massive shark because of its size,
but the shark's color is similar to the color of the water, however, the red is a direct contrast to the
blue in the image making it stand out more than any other part of the image. The author chooses red
for the title not only to make it stand out but also to imply the goriness of the film. Red is the color
of blood and in

Steven Spielberg's Reputation Of Jaws
Sharks have a bad reputation for being some of the most vicious animals on the face of this earth.
Steven Spielberg's 1975 block buster thriller movie jaws demonized sharks and portrayed them as
these vicious human eating animals and gave people a different perception of these animals. Jaws
served as that catalyst that propelled other movie makers to create films based on the vengeance of
sharks. All of these movies feed off of the fear that "Jaws" started. "Jaws" capitalized on the public
fear of sharks following the rise in human/shark interactions. With the increase in shark attacks,
people lauded the film that gave them both a monster shark and an experienced hunter that killed it.
The blockbuster depicted sharks as predators with the ability ... Show more content on

They're over 500 species of rays and is scientifically classified into 18 families and come in a
variety of color, shapes, and sizes. Scientist believe rays has been around for over 150 million years.
According to the Florida museum, The fossil record of rays and skates dates back to the Lower
Jurassic (150 million years ago). All of the major taxa are known by the Upper Cretaceous (100
million years ago) to the Paleocene (50 million years ago). In contrast to the bony fishes,
cartilaginous fishes leave behind little fossil records with the exception of teeth and scales. Rays are
a distinct group of animals that is found on the bottom of ocean floors. They have a flattened dislike
body with large wing like pectoral fins that extend forward when they swim. Some rays have
stingers on their tails that is used as a defense mechanism. They live in both tropical and cold water
and not considered as aggressive animals but do have run ins with humans from time to time. The
website leisure pro stated that, "These docile creatures are often misunderstood and categorized as
dangerous which is not really the case. While they do posses stings they generally do not attack
aggressively and if threatened, their primary reaction is to swim away. However, a defensive
reaction causes it to whip up their stinger which is often the case when attacked by predators or
stepped on.

Chief Brody's Character Change in Jaws

  • 1. Conflict In Jaws The opening scenes of the film Jaws (Steven Spielberg 1975), one of the main characters chief Martin Brody is introduced. Chief Brody is new to the town and main concern is keeping the people and the water safe. The mayor main concern at first is to keep the revenue coming in, which is keeping the beaches open for visitors. The small town Amity Island, a fictional New England town, busy season is the summer. The films primary conflict, which is a series of shark attacks in a small time frame, is what drives the film to the main turning point. However, by the end of the film we see Chief Brody's character change drastically to achieve the town's main goal, which is to have the beaches safe for visitors. In ACT 1 of the film the exposition (opening scenes of the film), illustrates the kind of character chief Brody is. Chief ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, his level on commitment to the issue is displayed through his increased efforts to eliminate the shark from the waters. Instead of just letting the fisherman do the job on his own he insists to go with him to help kill the shark. The motivation for this change was to ensure the people that the right shark that was attacking the people was killed. I saw a significant change in the level of motivation after the scene when the mother of one of the victims confronts him. The cues that draw attention to this change was when even though he is scared of the water he still goes along to help. Another major cue that lead me to believe the character has changed when he didn't give up after he thought he was the only one left to kill the shark. He pushed his fear of the water aside and defeated the shark in the last few minutes of the film (fig. 4,5 & 6.) The scene were he is happy he killed the shark was up lifting because after all the unfortunate events that has happened a happy ending made watching the film worth ... • 5. Fear Depicted In Steven Spielberg's Film Jaws Swimming in the ocean on a beautiful beach, the sun shining, the water is the perfect temperature, you have zero worries in the world. Until you feel a bump on your leg and notice someone on shore screaming and pointing in your direction, duh dum. You bring yourself out of your reverie and notice a very large fin protruding from the water moving towards you, duhh dumm. Your heart starts racing as you frantically think of your chances of being able to swim away from this monster coming your direction with increasing speed, duh dum dum dum dum. With simple notes of a tuba, John Williams could amplify the fear portrayed in Steven Spielberg's movie Jaws (1975). These simple notes would carry on to be a standard to symbolize something terrifying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... John Towner Williams was born in New York City on February 8, 1932. He acquired his love of music from his father who was a musician in the city. His passion for music took a three year hiatus when Williams was drafted in the U.S. Airforce in 1951, after which he returned to New York City to work as a jazz pianist while attending the Julliard School of Music. It was during his studies in Julliard where Williams decided to become a composer, humorously because he thought the competition for concert pianists was too high. After graduating from Julliard he moved to Los Angeles in the 1950s and began working as a movie studio musician. He worked as a pianist for a few years before given the opportunity to start composing his own music: Gilligan's Island and Lost in Space were some he had a part in composing. This was also around the same time that he started working with the big screen movies as well. He received an Academy Award nomination for Valley of the Dolls (1967), then went on to win an Academy Award for his music in Fiddler on the Roof (1972). • 9. Jaws Film Techniques Jaws (1975) Media Coursework Peter Benchley wrote "Jaws" the novel before it was made into a film directed by Steven Spielberg. "Jaws" is a thriller/horror with the main aim being to build up suspense and tension. When making the film Jaws Steven Spielberg had to face the challenging task of translating Benchley's popular novel into a hit movie whilst still maintaining the suspense created through the many textual devices used by Benchley, such as language techniques and sentence structure. Spielberg managed use different camera angles and shots alongside lighting effects to create atmosphere and tension to pretty much the same effect. In the background he uses music and sound effects to add to the dramatic visual images he creates. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another interesting point is as Chrissie is removing her clothes while running it is almost as she is leaving herself exposed to potential danger and making herself more vulnerable. At this point as the viewer sees Chrissie isolated in the water they realise that she is facing danger only limited by their own imagination. As Chrissie continues swimming, the frame changes to a point of view shot, accompanied by the same music as in the opening shot. The audience's thoughts change immediately from the images of the cheerful beach party to the earlier reference of the shark in the opening sequence. This provides a very effective contrast. The audience's expectations are realised when Chrissie feels a sharp pain, and then begins splashing about in the water as she is attacked. The unseen shark thrashes her around in the water, and she eventually clings onto a buoy, making its bell ring, in a vain attempt to alert the nearby community. After a final grasp for breath, she finally disappears under the surface of the water leaving the viewers with the burden of her death. The second victim of the shark is a young boy named Alex, this time the scene is set in along the beach, crowded with people enjoying the long Independence Day holiday. Also on the beach is police chief Brody with his own family. Sunbathers lie on the packed beach. This is a very unlikely place and time for an eventful scene. Again the ... • 13. Terrifying Events in the Ocean in Steven Spielberg's... Clenching teeth, defined facial bone structure and fine dentistry; the title of Steven Spielberg's classic film Jaws paints quite a mental picture for its viewers with many possibilities. Along with the title, the original film poster used to promote Jaws was visually colorful and terrifying all at the same time. The poster indicates an oversized great white shark lurking in the dark depths of the sea, looking up towards the surface at a swimmer. Waiting and watching, the imagery of the poster gives the viewer the feeling that the shark is waiting for just the right moment to attack with its powerful bone–crushing jaws. What makes this film so interesting and captivating is that for over half of Spielberg's film the protagonist, the shark, is nowhere to be seen. The way Steven Spielberg incorporates and mixes powerful and suspenseful music with his brilliant editing of the film, as well as the composition, allows viewers to believe there is an actual shark, even though the shark is out of sight. Steven Spielberg's film Jaws was influenced and inspired by the fictional novel Jaws written by Peter Benchley. With a few changes to better the cinematography, the film portrayed the novel and followed its outline very closely. Jaws the film had become America's very first blockbuster hit (Quarterly). Not only had it became such a success, but it had also instilled fear into the lives of many of its viewers. Benchley has stated that Spielberg "had tapped a profound, subconscious, ... • 17. Jaws Film Analysis Jaws premiered on June 20, 1975. Steven Spielberg directed the film, accompanied by screenwriters Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb. Jaws has many film techniques that accompany the main characters. The main characters of the filmed are played by Roy Scheider (Brody), Robert Shaw (Quint), Richard Dreyfuss (Matt Hooper), and Murray Hamilton (Mayor Larry Vaughn). Director Steven Spielberg uses many different film techniques to emphasize different scenes in the movie and command the audience's attention to the screen. The analysis of the film involves examining the theatrical elements and the thematic content. The film takes place on Amity Island. The plot starts when a woman goes missing that is later found dead on the beach. It is discovered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To start, Jaws uses rough–grained film stock to give high contrasts between the whites and the blacks. This technique is useful for this film because of the setting it takes place in. This type of film stock was successful because of the beach environment that had to be conveyed through the screen. The cinematography of the film ties all the aspects of the movie together flawlessly. Many different camera angles are used during the film including objective and subjective camera angles. Musical accompaniments in Jaws are written to suit the different events that take place in the film. Included in the film is diegetic and non–diegetic sounds for the purpose of improving the reality of the film. This is exhibited as the suspenseful music is played whenever the shark begins to appear. The lighting in the film is mostly natural. This makes filming a bit more difficult. However, the cinematographer still manages to film a movie of astounding visual quality for the day and age the film was released in. In addition, the film's main characters are round and are dynamic adding further complexity. • 21. Jaws and Jurassic Park Films Steven Spielberg's Jaws (1975) and his other film Jurassic Park (1993) both contain a major theme of what makes a successful hero in society. In Jaws, police chief Martin Brody must successfully eliminate the threat of a Great White Shark from attacking Amity Island. In Jurassic Park, billionaire John Hammond creates a theme park where cloned dinosaurs come alive, hoping that his ideal resort becomes a major success. Through the use of film style elements, such as editing and mise–en scene, Spielberg develops Brody's character as a person who must learn from his past mistakes in order to become a successful hero while Spielberg creates Hammond's character as a man who only sees himself as a hero of science and technology without realizing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This contrast in lighting direction is another indicator of the inherent problem with Jurassic Park. The major use of backlighting on Grant represents the "dark side" of Jurassic Park as Hammond's plan to resurrect dangerous animals such as the Velociraptor for entertainment purposes while suppressing nature is what leads to the park's and Hammond's demise because Hammond can not possibly re–create vicious predators from the past and suppress them in artificial environments for profit. Hammond did not envision Jurassic Park as a dangerous place or a violation of nature but as a triumph of scientific research and sees himself as a heroic figure of science. The lighting set–up used on Dr. Wu represents the opposing side to Grant's views on Jurassic Park, which would be Hammond's view. If Hammond can get the best minds of the cloning field like Dr. Wu to help him realize his dream resort then he is surely an inspiring figure to the scientific community. Whereas Brody could see the problems that were literally sitting in front of him and learn from them to become a hero, Hammond does not even question what he sees and his decision to ignore what others have to say about his accomplishments only initiate his eventual failure as a role–model of science. The level of terror in this town and in the audience grows throughout this movie. Eventually Brody, Hooper and Quint are forced to spend the end portion of this film isolated at sea, hunting this shark. Robert Shaw's Quint is considered one of the most "anti–heroes" the movies ever saw. He is funny and frightening at the same time. He seems to have many demons that haunt him. • 33. The Great White Shark, By Paul J. Crutzen And Eugene F.... In the early 2000s, the 'Anthropocene' emerged as a widespread term to represent the current era of Earth's history. According to Paul J. Crutzen and Eugene F. Stoermer, the 'Anthopocene' represents a "geologic epoch" characterized by human activities that profoundly transform the environment, threaten ecosystems, and cause unparalleled disruptions on earth's natural processes. (Ogden et al. 2013: 341) Unfortunately, humanity in the period of the 'Anthropocene' has contributed to a range of environmental problems, including pollution and mass extinctions. (Ogden et al. 2013: 341) One ancient species considerably at risk in the 'Anthropocene' is the Great White Shark. Despite its precarious position and its imminent eradication, the Great White Shark must be respected and understood. In an attempt to reveal the intrinsic value of the oceans' most important predator, humans must shed conceptions of Great White Sharks as mindless man–eating monsters and instead conceive of them in a new light. Ultimately, a thorough exploration reveals Great Whites inherent value independent of their worth to humans. Furthermore, it serves as an important framework for thinking about the harmful consequences human practices have the environment. Ultimately, this examination changes humankinds attitudes towards the Great White and dispels popular myths to reveal that all species are fundamentally related and share a common destiny. • 37. Movie Analysis : ' The Film ' Jaws ' "Duh dun...Duh dun...Duh dun, duh dun, duh dun." When you hear the famous two–note theme from the classic summer blockbuster Jaws, your heart immediately picks up and instantly visions of a massive, man eating shark pop into your head. In 1975, Jaws terrified beachgoers everywhere with the bone chilling thought of a vicious great white shark lurking just below their feet, threatening to attack every person it came in contact with. Swimmers were haunted by the image of the film's poster, which displayed a swimmer just within reach of the colossal beast's jaws. The poster did its job in conveying the terror it wanted to instill in its viewers for the sake of the film, but was it an accurate depiction of reality? In this 2015 ad, WildAid parodies the poster from the classic film Jaws to paint humans as the real monster when it comes to human–shark interactions. With the inclusion of a striking statistic and by creating a parallel between the vicious shark from the film and those of the shark finning industry, WildAid shifts the blame in order to raise awareness for their cause and focus on the real victim. At first glance, one might just see this ad as the Jaws poster, but something draws you to take a closer look. The word "laws," put in large, bright red, bold font, invites the viewer to take a closer look. This is no accident. By putting "laws" in such a prominent position, it focuses on the main goal and purpose of the advertisement, just as the title of the movie would have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. Jaws: The Quintessence Of Classical Hollywood Film Almost every Hollywood movie follows a set tradition. The Hollywood movies have recurring elements in almost everyone. Each Hollywood movie has the same format and setup, but this does not make it a classical movie like the Wizard of Oz. It is no walk in the park creating a Classical movie. Jaws is the quintessence of Classical Hollywood Cinema. It is a great suspenseful classical movie that will beat out the test of time. Two main element in narrative Hollywood cinema are focusing on main character, and that main character solving a goal. The movie, Jaws, revolves around Sherriff Brody, and his struggle to protect the beaches from a shark. Once there is a goal defined, there is opposition. Sherriff Brody had a traumatizing event when the little boy wearing red shorts is eaten by the shark. The deadline in Jaws is when they go to kill the shark at the end. Hollywood narrated movies tend to be shown objectively. This means that the character's actions are what we see. We do not get to be in the character's psyche all the time. An objective scene in Jaws is when they are sitting around the campfire and listening to music. A subjective scene is when the shark swims toward the nude girl in the ocean to eat her. We are able to envision what the shark sees. Finally, Classical Hollywood Narrative movies like to have closure. There are no cliffhangers or open ended questions once the movie is over. The main character resolves the issue. In Jaws, Sherriff Brody kills the shark, and then swims to shore. Classical Hollywood movies tend to follow this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Whenever Lester begins to have sexual fantasies about Angela, rose petals appear. Perhaps the first thing to focus on first, is the use of color and motif. Throughout the entire film, the rose, the American Beauty, had often been a symbol of Lester's lust and desire for Angela. In his fantasies, the girl is shrouded in the roses, covering her body, betraying the fact that these are, in fact, his passionate musings rather than reality. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg whose other works include Indiana Jones and E.T. Jaws is a fascinating and entertaining film mainly because of its interesting and diverse plot. The people of Amity Island used to live a peaceful and quiet life in the small summer resort town in America. Now however, the people of the small town have become victim to a man–eating Great White Shark. For instance, whenever an attack occurs, the music ends up being extremely fast, then slowing considerably and then stopping altogether resulting in complete silence. This silence after each attack frightens the audience because they realise how quickly something awful, like the event they have just witnessed, can happen and how quickly it can end. It also reminds them that the shark is still out there and will continue to carry out these attacks. In addition, before the first attack occurs a group of teenagers are having a bonfire and at this point someone is playing a mouth organ. When the boy and the girl run off, we suddenly hear the sound of the mouth organ gently disappearing. This shows that the two are travelling away from safety and peace into the abyss of the dark sea where they are unaware of what is lurking there. It also signifies how alone and desolate they are. The second attack occurs on a crowded beach, a venue where everyone feels safe. Contrary to popular belief this is not true though, as recent studies have shown that Great White Sharks are often found in just three feet of water. This supposedly safe environment is emphasised with a mid shot that gives a good perspective of a relaxed environment with people enjoying the sun and generally having a good time. Just like silence, music can also be used to scare the audience. An example of this is the loudness of the theme tune increasing as the shark is getting closer to its prey. It tells us that the attack is about to begin and lets us know that the person attacked will die, we know that he or she could not survive as previous victims had not survived. In the second attack a lot of camera techniques have been used to help build tension and scare the audience. During the second attack camera angles are used to build tension and are also used to help the audience create and emotional attachment with the victims. The film Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg, was created approximately 30 years ago. It tells the story of a shark which attacks and kills numerous people off the north–east coast of the USA in a small holiday resort called Amity Island. The attacks took place around the 4th of July, which in America, is similar to the British bank holiday. During this time, many Americans and tourists from abroad visit resorts such as Amity Island for a summer vacation. This use of music and contrasting emotions builds up tension and fear affecting the audience as it makes them feel confused, as they can't understand how things can be so pleasant then suddenly so devastating. Spielberg also exploits various camera techniques to build up fear and suspense in the film Jaws. For example, during the second attack on Alex, a lot of different camera techniques and angles are being used. The start of the scene is a tracking shot, showing Alex coming out of the sea and sitting next to his mother on the beach. After some persuasion, his mother lets him have just 10 more minutes in the water. Then a further tracking shot is used, as we follow Alex up the beach as he goes and gets his lilo. The use of this camera angle, which focuses the audience's attention on Alex, immediately makes them feel more attached to the character. The next part of the scene shows Alex running into the sea on his lilo. The camera technique used for this part is a medium shot from a reverse angle, showing him from behind. This camera angle builds up fear as all the audience can see is Alex on his lilo and the bearing sea in front of him with no–one else in sight. Steven Spielberg 's Film Jaws Steven Spielberg's film "JAWS" (1975), (Spielberg/Universal), uses the motif of an essentially unseen shark, ominously present through unpredictable displays of terrifying violence, to sculpt a message about good, evil, power, arrogance, and vanity within the hegemony of small–town middle class America. Spielberg markets this "High Concept" (Cook 40), film and its nationalist ideals on a story that is principally based on one image, the shark, and the fallibility of the human decision making process. In a relatively short scene that lasts no longer than a minute and a half, eleven or so minutes into the film, the viewer is presented with the hierarchy of the town's political decision making process, its hubris and the lack of concern for the physical safety of the common citizenry over which they govern. The scene takes place on a small ferry boat in the town's harbor. The previous evening there was an unwitnessed shark attack in the harbor water which killed a young woman. The discussion on the ferry, held by the town's mayor, selectmen, medical examiner, and police chief, is primarily between police chief Brody and Mayor Vaughn. If the director was able to get you sitting on the edge of your seat, holding your breath, and waiting, they did their job. It is why people go and see new horror films. A lot of things factor into suspense in horror films, such as: plot, camera angles and shots, setting, and information the audience may already know, but nothing is as directly correlated to suspense as music and sound is. Sound is what makes a horror film scary. In the cases of some classic horror films like Jaws (1975) and Psycho (1960), the music is sometimes more widely recognized than the film itself. Music can also be an indicator that something bad is about to happen or is going to happen in the not–so–distant future. Although there are a lot of ways that suspense can be placed upon an audience, I will argue that music and sound, or the lack thereof, is the most efficient way to create suspense and increase thrill. Music is a way to not only express feelings, but also to create feelings in audiences. Music has a way of connecting memories to the song or melody that is playing. It is like walking through the mall and getting a whiff of the perfume an old ex– girlfriend wore; all of the memories flood back for a minute. Music has the same power. Songs that a person has not heard in years can take them back to a specific moment and the memory will still be vivid. I was fourteen years old when I first watched Insidious (2010). Tension and Suspense the Novel and the Opening Scene of the Film Jaws Peter Benchley wrote "Jaws" the novel before it was made into a film directed by Steven Spielberg. "Jaws" is a thriller with the main aim being to build up suspense and tension. In the novel Peter Benchley uses many variations of language techniques to emphasise important points that build up suspense. He also uses sentence and paragraph structure to affect the reader in many different ways. Steven Spielberg on the other hand uses different camera angles and shots alongside lighting effects to create atmosphere and tension. In the background he uses music and sound effects to add to the dramatic visual images he creates. Finally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The tempo and volume gradually increase with the intention of raising the viewer's heartbeat. This increase also gives the effect that whatever is moving through the water is getting closer and speeding up. Then all of a sudden a dramatic picture, from the shark's eye view appears, creeping through the weeds on the seabed. The camera angle is very effective, as the audience moves through the weeds with the shark. The dimly lit darkness of deep underwater which creates an unclear picture has the effect of making the audience anxious as nobody knows what the shark is about to find. The instant that the picture appears, an abrupt increase in the tempo and the volume of the music makes the viewer's heart leap. Amounting tension causes an adrenaline rush and makes the viewer edgy. Suspense is created because the viewer knows that something will happen but does not know when. When the music comes to a climax a horn joins in with the cellos. Horns are generally associated with any kind of hunt and although the audience doesn't yet know that the shark is after the girl the horn adds to the overall nervousness of the atmosphere. As screeching, slashing violins can be heard the bold, glaring title Jaws appears in capital letters signalling the ultimate climax of the tension. Just when the audience can't take ... The camera technique used is a Medium Long Shot; this allows the audience to see the attack and the surroundings in more detail. He also builds tension by showing all the attacks in detail and comes quite at a distance so you can see just what actually happens to the victims as if you were watching from the beach. However during the film the shark is described as 25 feet long and weighing 3 tons, several time, this is in a way of giving the audience clues and it even creates a picture in the audiences heads of what its finally going to look like. The opening shot places the protagonist in a life boat, at sea, startled from his reclined position as he line snags. As he reels in the line the audience feels growing suspense as the protagonist has been stuck at sea for days and if he has been able to successfully fish for food, we can feel optimistic for his future at sea. The audience is rudely awakened when the suspense turns into horror, not the expected delight, as a shark emerges from the water and takes his catch. Through this use of suspense and the building of tension, the audience feels the protagonist's disappointment along with him. When the protagonist tries to search for the sharks who stole his catch he cannot see them, no matter how hard he tries. This can be seen as an allegory to the fact he cannot predict the future events to happen. He is at the whim of the sea and to nature in general. This is further highlighted by a low angle shot from beneath the life raft which shows the sharks circling the protagonist. The use of a low angle shot in film gives power to the figure being shot. In this instance the sharks are in the position of power, as they are the embodiment of nature in this scene. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The success of Jaws is a result of the mass of advertising the producers did. Jaws was the first film to have a "wide release", opening at the same time across the country and making it the highest grossing film at the time. The vast amount of detail the producers went into advertising can be seen in the Jaws' movie poster. Through the vivid red title, the unseen shark in the ocean's depth, the unwitting and vulnerable woman, the use of prominent actor's names, and the magnitude of the shark, the author uses a myriad of textual and non–textual techniques that create both suspense and excitement for the film. First, the author places the title "Jaws" in the center of the page in bright red letters, which causes the title to stand to the viewer because the red lettering is an enormous contrast to the primarily blue and white image. The author uses the placement and color of the title catch the eyes of the viewer. For example, when looking at the image the viewer will notice the massive shark because of its size, but the shark's color is similar to the color of the water, however, the red is a direct contrast to the blue in the image making it stand out more than any other part of the image.
