O Conditional
When/If + Present Simple, Present Simple
It is used for present real facts/situations.
When it is hot, we wear light clothes.
Exercise 1
People (not, die) if they (drink) and (eat).
If you (heat) water to 100 degrees Celsius, it (boil).
If you (cut) your finger, you (bleed).
If you (heat) the ice, it (melt).
If you heat water to 100 degrees Celsius, it boils .
If you heat the ice, it melts.
If you cut your finger, it bleeds.
People don’t die if they eat and drink.
1st Conditional
If /Unless (If not) + Present Simple, Future Simple
It is used for future real/factual situations.
If it doesn’t rain, we will (’ll) go to the mountains.
Unless it rains, we will (’ll) go to the mountains.

Exercise 2
If the weather (clear), we (go) for a walk.
He (come) if you (invite) him.

If you don’t take a map, you will get lost.
If the weather clears, we will go for a walk.
2nd Conditional
If + Past Simple, would/wouldn’t + infinitive
(could/might/should)
It is used for present or future unreal, imaginary situations.
If I were rich, I wouldn’t work at all.
Exercise 3
We (go) to the cinema if Jack (get) tickets.
If I (have) a bike, I (go) for a ride.
If I (have) a car, I (give) a lift.
He (help) me if he (be) here.
If I had a ride, I would go for a ride.
He would help me if he was here.
If I had a car, I would give you a lift.
We would go to the cinema if Jack got tickets.
3rd Conditional
If + Past Perfect, would/wouldn’t + have+ infinitive
(could/might/should)
It is used for past unreal, imaginary situations.
If I had got a visa, I would have gone to the USA 10 years ago.
Exercise 4
Mary (not, pay) so much for this dress if she (wait) for a sale.
If I (not,be) ill, I (go) to school last week.
If you (come) to the party, you (meet) a lot of beautiful girls.
If you (come) earlier, I (not, have to) wait.
If I hadn’t been ill, I would have gone to school last week.
If you had come earlier, I wouldn’t have had to wait.
If you had come to the party, you would have met a lot of beautiful girls.
Mary wouldn’t have paid so much for this dress if she had waited for a sale.
