DEFINITIONS OF COMMUNITY
Community
- Derived from the Latin word communis,
which means “common” or “shared”.
- Social unit compose of people who have
something in common.
DEFINITIONS OF COMMUNITY
Civil Society Perspective
- is looking at societies as a
community of people sharing common
interests and activities.
DEFINITIONS OF COMMUNITY
A. People's organizations
- refer to groups or associations that are formed by
individuals with common goals and interests, often
advocating for social justice and human rights issues.
- These organizations can include a wide range of
groups, such as labor unions, community-based
organizations, and grassroots movements.

B. Civic organizations
- are groups that are focused on promoting
civic engagement, participation, and the well-being
of communities.
- They often work to address community needs,
promote social justice, and advocate for the rights
and interests of community members.

C. Social movements
- are collective efforts by individuals or groups
to bring about social or political change.
- These movements can be organized around a
variety of issues, such as civil rights, environmental
justice, or LGBTQ rights.

D. LGBTQ
- refers to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and
queer individuals.
- LGBTQ movements are social and political
movements that advocate for the rights and
acceptance of these individuals.
- These movements often involve activities such as
lobbying, protests, and community building.
ELEMENTS OF COMMUNITY
A. Structures
- The tangible aspects of a community.
1. Sociopolitical Structure
- Includes the social and political aspects that shape its
organization and governance.
- It involves the relationships between individuals,
groups, and institutions within the community.
- Includes systems of government, laws, policies, and
social norms that influence the behavior and interactions of
community members.
ELEMENTS OF COMMUNITY
2. Economic Structure
- Pertains to the production, distribution, and
consumption of goods and services within the community.
- It encompasses various economic activities, such as
businesses, industries, employment opportunities, and the
overall economic well-being of the community.
- Can vary based on factors like resources, industries,
and levels of economic development.
3. Cultural Structure
- Refers to the shared beliefs, customs, traditions, and
values that shape the identity and way of life within the
community.
- It includes aspects such as language, religion, art,
music, literature, and cultural practices.
- Plays a crucial role in shaping the social fabric,
identity, and cohesion of a community.
B. Dynamics and Processes
- The intangible aspects of a community.
1. Community power
- seek to create public services that are non-
transactional, non-hierarchical, and where local
communities and communities of interest are
able to shape the parts of the state that they
interact with.
2. Leadership
- The ability of an individual or a group of
people to influence and guide followers or
members of an organization, society or team.
- Is often an attribute tied to a person's title,
seniority or ranking in a hierarchy.
3. Relationships
- The connections and interactions between
individuals, families, and social groups.
- May be long-term or short-term and are often
formed because of some type of commonality built
within the community.
4. Social Change
- refers to the collective efforts of the community
to address social issues, advocate for change, and
improve the quality of life for its members.
- Changes in human interactions and
relationships that transform cultural and social
institution.
