Exploring what distractions are, where they
come from and how to cope with them
Some practical techniques for improving your
concentration skills
Concentration
• Concentration refers to a persons
ability to focus on what is most
important in any situation while ignoring
distractions.
• For example, trying to look over notes
while someone is watching the T.V. in
the same room requires this kind of
selective attention
• However, research suggests that students
can listen to music & concentrate
effectively as long as they believe they
have the power to change the volume in
the background
Generally effective
concentration involves at
least 3 skills
I. You must have a clear objective in mind (study
question)
II. You have to break up that objective in action
steps (task which move you nearer to your goal)
III.You must remind yourself to re-focus
periodically or else you will think to far ahead
Distractions affecting
concentration
External distractions consist of environmental
factors which upset our concentration.
e.g. interrupted by noise or by other people.
Internal distractions are self-generated
concerns which arise from our own thoughts
& feelings.
E.g. worrying about what other people might say
or do, worrying about tests before we even
sit them, etc.

o Having so many things that you don’t know where to
start
o Not having a specific goal or question when studying
o Not working to a plan or a timetable
o Feeling too tired to concentrate

o Being interrupted constantly by other people
o Thinking too far ahead
o Regretting what happened in the past
o Thinking of unrelated matters while working on a job
o Not being able to put personal matters out of your
mind
Dealing with distractions
o Keep your desk as a work-place not a storage
place
o Making a start gets you into the moods for
studying- don’t wait for inspiration to strike
o To avoid fatigue, always set a starting time &
a finishing time for your study sessions

o Take regular exercise
o Find a quiet place where you know you will be
able to study without being disturbed
o Give yourself visible reminders to re-focus on
what is more important right now.
Techniques for concentration
• A good place to start in improving your
concentrating is to identify the things
that distract you easily
• Make notes regarding that
• Music relaxations
Exercise 1
• Sit in a comfortable chair and see how still
you can keep. This is not as easy as it seems.
You will have to center your attention on
sitting still. Watch and see that you are not
making any involuntary muscular movements.
By a little practice you will find you are able
to sit still without a movement of the
muscles for fifteen minutes. At first I
advise sitting in a relaxed position for five
minutes.
Exercise 2
• Put the right hand on knee, both
fingers and thumb closed, except the
first finger, which points out in front
of you. Then move the finger slowly
from side to side, keeping the
attention fixed upon the end of the
finger. Repeat the same in other hand
too.

  • 2. In this session … Explaining what concentration is and what it involves Exploring what distractions are, where they come from and how to cope with them Some practical techniques for improving your concentration skills
  • 3. Concentration • Concentration refers to a persons ability to focus on what is most important in any situation while ignoring distractions. • For example, trying to look over notes while someone is watching the T.V. in the same room requires this kind of selective attention
  • 4. • However, research suggests that students can listen to music & concentrate effectively as long as they believe they have the power to change the volume in the background
  • 5. Generally effective concentration involves at least 3 skills I. You must have a clear objective in mind (study question) II. You have to break up that objective in action steps (task which move you nearer to your goal) III.You must remind yourself to re-focus periodically or else you will think to far ahead
  • 6. Distractions affecting concentration External distractions consist of environmental factors which upset our concentration. e.g. interrupted by noise or by other people. Internal distractions are self-generated concerns which arise from our own thoughts & feelings. E.g. worrying about what other people might say or do, worrying about tests before we even sit them, etc.
  • 7. Continue…………. o Having so many things that you don’t know where to start o Not having a specific goal or question when studying o Not working to a plan or a timetable o Feeling too tired to concentrate
  • 8. Continue…………. o Being interrupted constantly by other people o Thinking too far ahead o Regretting what happened in the past o Thinking of unrelated matters while working on a job o Not being able to put personal matters out of your mind
  • 9. Dealing with distractions o Keep your desk as a work-place not a storage place o Making a start gets you into the moods for studying- don’t wait for inspiration to strike o To avoid fatigue, always set a starting time & a finishing time for your study sessions
  • 10. Continue…………. o Take regular exercise o Find a quiet place where you know you will be able to study without being disturbed o Give yourself visible reminders to re-focus on what is more important right now.
  • 11. Techniques for concentration • A good place to start in improving your concentrating is to identify the things that distract you easily • Make notes regarding that • Music relaxations
  • 12. Exercise 1 • Sit in a comfortable chair and see how still you can keep. This is not as easy as it seems. You will have to center your attention on sitting still. Watch and see that you are not making any involuntary muscular movements. By a little practice you will find you are able to sit still without a movement of the muscles for fifteen minutes. At first I advise sitting in a relaxed position for five minutes.
  • 13. Exercise 2 • Put the right hand on knee, both fingers and thumb closed, except the first finger, which points out in front of you. Then move the finger slowly from side to side, keeping the attention fixed upon the end of the finger. Repeat the same in other hand too.
