Extempore Tips
Handling Extempore :-
• Little nervousness is good but don’t make this impact your performance.
• Don’t let others know that you are nervous.
• Take a minute or two to pen down your ideas and vocabulary you can use.
• Be confident about yourself and smile.
• Stick to the given topic.
• Say “Thanks” for been given that topic and then introduce yourself.
• Don’t jump with the topic straight away.
• Think before your speak, plan ideas in your mind and take proper pauses so
that you get time to generate more ideas.
• Voice should be clear not flat or monotonous.
• Have enthusiasm and energy to speak on topic.
• Rate of speech should neither be too high or too low.
• Positive body language should be maintained during extempore.
• Don’t try fake accent or imitate anybody, Just be yourself.
• Use right vocabulary as per the topic given.
• Right attitude and right mind set will help you put your best foot forward.
• Prepare some back up.
• Keep it short and sweet.
• Watch your words.
WHAT IF YOU DRAW A BLANK !!!
• Pretend like you're pausing on purpose.
• Walk back and forth slowly, as if you're letting your last point sink in.
• There is always a joker or popular person who will stand out in the crowd.
Stare at someone like this and try to draw a response from him or her while
you think.
• If you need more time to think, you may want to ask the audience a
question. Have a few prepared ahead, like "Do you have any questions," or
"Can everyone hear me okay?"
• If you still can't remember what to say, make up a reason to pause the
speech. You can say, "I'm sorry, but my throat is very dry. Can I please get a
glass of water?"
• But if you are still not able to recall accept that honestly. Remember ,at the
end honesty is the best policy.
