In medicine, advances like keyhole surgery and brain scanning allow for improved and faster patient care. Transportation has been transformed with cars, trains, buses and affordable air travel enabling people to visit places around the world in hours rather than months. Education has benefited from computers making research easier and allowing online learning. Entertainment has evolved drastically with new devices, online access and more accessible activities. Communication technologies have shrunk the world, enabling people to connect instantly worldwide through the internet and mobile phones.

The rapid advancement of technology is detrimental to human existence on Earth if its negative consequences are not addressed.

Technology has greatly impacted our lives in many ways. Basic home technologies like TV, computers, and phones allow people to stay informed about news and events and communicate with others. Without these technologies, people would be isolated from world events and unable to contact others in emergencies. Portable devices owned by most teens like cell phones and mp3 players also enable communication and help in emergencies. Cars and public transportation expand people's access to resources and attractions in other towns. Machines are used in hospitals, industries, homes, and schools to help people learn, receive medical care, and live their lives. The world relies on technology to support its population and future technological advances will continue making lives easier.

The computer serves a number of roles across the entire spectrum of Information Technology. That’s why many people tend to think of “Information Technology” as being interchangeable with “Computer Science”. IT is actually about the systems for managing and distributing information and the computer is just one tool (albeit, a very versatile one) in that toolbox.
So, at the front end, computers can be used to collect data. That data can come from sensors, user input or can even be created internally based on calculation or correlations of other data. Data that’s collected is initially stored in computer memory. In the case of specialized data collection devices, there may be a dedicated computer contained in the sensor package, and multiple tiers of computers that consolidate and route the data to a centralized general purpose computer)
That data can then be transferred to longer term storage which is also managed and controlled by computer. This normally takes the form of disk arrays made up of physical hard drives or SSDs.
The data can be analyzed, processed, correlated, transformed and presented as information. Computers and specialized software perform that function and create the visualizations, reports and a UI (user interface) to that data that presents the information in context.
Computers can then be used to tag and index that information based on a common taxonomy so that it can be found by other computers, software or human users.
Additional data can be collected from the users on how the data/information is being consumed and that can feed back into the earlier stages of the process to refine the results and provide more relevant/meaningful information to the users (or other systems)
Of course, along the way, the data is often transmitted and routed over networks (controlled by computers), distributed via email, web and file sharing (served by computers), formatted/published/printed (on computers and by devices containing dedicated computers)

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

- 1. Technology in Society M4 Computing – Lesson 2
- 2. Introduction Today we are going to look at the difference technology has made to all of our lives. Consider the difference technology has made to the fields of medicine, travel, military, education, communication and entertainment.
- 3. What is Technology? Being able to use tools and crafts to improve how we control and adapt with our natural or man-made environment. In human society today, technology is a result of science and engineering.
- 4. History Technology has been around as long as the human race. From early spears used for hunting to the use of fire as a source of energy. The wheel was an early technological breakthrough, allowing human kind to travel and transport goods. Within the last few thousand years humans discovered they could use metal and wood to improve their standard of life.
- 5. Modern History In more modern times we have created more usable and complex technology such as the clock, the engine, the electric motor, the radio and the computer. Consider the difference in today's society, due to massive advances in technology, as recent as 50 years ago. We will now look in detail at some of those advances.
- 6. Medicine Scientific research has been greatly improved by the use of the technology. Data can be analysed more accurately and faster, allowing for improved medical care. Patients can be treated quickly and expertly. Important technology in the medical field: Keyhole surgery Brain scanning Online education about health and safety for people in poorer countries.
- 8. Travel Technology has enabled people to be able to visit places in the World they had never previously been able to visit. To travel across the world 200 years ago would have taken months rather than hours, as it does today. Cars and motorbikes are now affordable thanks to advances in technology. Bus, train and air travel is getting cheaper and cheaper.
- 9. Military Weapons and technology used for monitoring or spying on people has changed the face of war. Nuclear technology and satellites are 2 of the major differences. We can monitor (spy on) the whole world from a few satellites in space. Not all technology has benefited human kind. Modern weapons are now capable of killing millions of people in one go.
- 10. Education Computers have helped make education more interesting and easier for students. Research can be carried out in minutes thanks to computers and the internet. Students can learn about different cultures, share experiences and take virtual tours of places far away. Students can now study at home, using email, web pages and online education courses. Vital for countries with poor educational services.
- 11. Entertainment 50 years ago there was no Nintendo, no Play Station, no X Box and no internet. What did students do after school? Think of the time we spend today on our mobile phones, text messaging or chatting on the internet. DVD players, Satellite and Cable TV and mp3 music players are all very recent technological innovations. Karaoke, cinemas and even sporting activities are all more accessible to people in recent years.
- 12. Communication We can now communicate with people all over the world in a matter of seconds, just by switching on our PCs and logging onto the internet. Mobile phones have made it easier to keep in touch with friends, family and people we work with. With the latest mobile phones we can log onto the internet, send emails and even have video chat! Even as little ago as 30 years communication to overseas countries was limited to writing letters. Today this is known as snail mail!
- 13. Today's Task Your task today is to work in pairs and create PowerPoint slideshow about 1 example of modern technology that in your opinion has changed the way we live today. Please tell the rest of the class: Why your chose your subject. Some information about this technology. How this technology has helped changed the world. What life was like before this technology. The future?
