TECHNOLOGY
The word technology comes from the Greek
words techne which means “craft” and logy
which means “scientific study of.” So
technology means the “scientific study of
craft.” Craft in this case, means any method or
invention that allow humans to control or
adapt to their environment.

Technology in Your Life
Computers and You
Now You Will See
 How technology affects your everyday life
 How technology is used at home, school, and work
Technology in Your Life
Computers and You
Technology in Our Lives
Since ancient times, people have been using science to
solve practical problems. In the last 50 years,
technology—especially computer technology—has
changed the way we:
 work
 play
 communicate
In fact many times when computers are not working, it can
become difficult to do everyday tasks!
Computers and You
Technology in Our Lives
How Do I Use Technology?
Technology often works behind the scenes. You might not know that
computers:
Technology in Your Life
 Keep track of the books in your school library
 Predict the weather
 Dispense money from ATMs
 Monitor hospital patients
 Make cars safer to drive
The “brain” of every computerized device is a small but powerful chip
called a microprocessor, or microchip.
Technology in Your Life
Computers and You
Technology and You
Technology is constantly changing. It is important to keep up with how
technology is used at school, at home, and at work.
How Is Technology Used at School?
At school, computers can help you:
 Find books in the library
 Research a topic
 Record or organize information
 Write a report
 Deliver a class presentation

Technology and You
How Is Technology Used at Home?
At home, many systems and appliances are
computerized. Among these, personal computers are
especially useful because they let you:
 Communicate with friends and family
 Find information
 Listen to music and watch movies
 Play games
Technology in Your Life

Technology and You
How Is Technology Used at Work?
At work, technology is everywhere! Computers
are used to do these and many other tasks:
 Create documents
 Maintain schedules
 Place orders and track sales
 Track products and workers
These days, many people telecommute rather
than work in an office.
• Fiber-optic technology is a method of transmitting
information from one place to another by sending pulses
of light through an optical fiber. The light forms
an electromagnetic carrier wave that is modulated to
carry information.
• communications in core networks in the developed world.
Because of its advantages over electrical transmission,
optical fibers have largely replaced copper wire
25
more than any other invention, computer technology is still evolving, which means that it continues to
impact society in new ways
 the first electronic computers made significant contributions in the 1940’s
▪ COLOSSUS – used for code breaking in World War II
▪ ENIAC – performed calculations and simulations that led to the development of nuclear
technology and Cold War science
 currently, we live in an "information economy", with computers central to business and innovation
27
technology has become so pervasive in daily life, it is difficult to
imagine life without it
e.g., monetary transactions
 cash is frequently being replaced with credit or debit cards
 computerized banking networks enable the immediate
electronic transfer of funds
 ATM machines allow people to access their money around
the clock from any location
 all this has discouraged traditional theft, but has inspired new
forms of illegal activity
Computers in Everyday Tasks
 modern life also depends on thousands of less obvious, hidden computer
applications
 embedded processors are computer chips that are built into appliances
and machinery to control their workings
 they account for more than 90% of all computer processors
 the average U.S. home contains 50 to 100 embedded processors
in ovens, television remote controls, cordless phones, automatic
thermostats, …
 automobiles employ embedded processors to control a wide variety
of components
28
Internet/Web for Information
• traditional media have approached the Internet in a variety of ways
• some provide limited services online for free
• e.g., cnn.com, weather.com
• others provide full services with a fee
• e.g., Encyclopedia Britannica sells access over the Web
29
• independent media organizations have utilized the Web to present stories
and opinions that might not otherwise reach a mainstream audience
Internet/Web for Information
the majority of Web pages are unique resources created by individuals and
private organizations
30
you can find Web content on virtually any topic
to help navigate the vast sea of information, search engines automatically
catalog Web pages and allow users to search for data by topic or
keywords
Internet/Web for Communication
31
many users were originally drawn to the Internet by the availability of electronic mail
and newsgroups
 in 2002, 93% of all Internet users communicated via email
31 billion email messages were sent and received each day
 the number of emails is expected to reach 60 billion by 2006
Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
manage email accounts with other
services
 e.g., AOL, msn, Microsoft
Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail
 programs such as Microsoft
Outlook provide an intuitive
user interface for sending and
receiving email messages
32
INTERNET/WEB FOR COMMERCE
Another popular function of the web is to
facilitate electronic commerce or e-commerce.
Online shopping has numerous
advantages for customers.
 You can make purchases from home.
 It is easy to comparision shops.
 Amazon.com: $3.93 billion in sales in
2002
Society
• Society can be defined as a group, large or
small, of people in a particular place and time
who are linked by common goals and
interests.
• Society is affected greatly by both science and
technology.
• How will society be affected by the scientific
and technological ideas of airplanes we just
discussed?
People can travel long distances in a
short period of time.
Society will want to know the
airplane is safe before they use it.
Laws and standards will help ensure
people’s safety.
Science and technology have many
impacts, both positive and negative, on the
environment.
How will the environment be affected by
the scientific and technological ideas of
airplanes we just discussed?
Affects on the Environment
O Increased pollution
O Increased use of fuel
O As humans travel globally they carry and
spread disease from one area of the world
to another.
O Ecosystems destroyed to build runways.
O Affects of pesticides on organisms other
than the crops sprayed.
TECHNOLOGY: You will need it…
Conclusion
 The importance and uses of
technology in all walks of life is evident on
going through the previous passages in this
project. It is an inevitable device in the
present day life and having unimaginable
uses and potential. It not only saves time but
opens tremendous possibilities and leads to
a wonderful world of utilities and
conveniences. Let us wait for further magic
of technology.
