3. 3Cloud Computing and Social Media
History And Introduction
The word "cloud" is commonlyused in science to describe alarge
agglomeration of objects that visually appear from a distance as a cloud
and describesany set of things whose details are not further inspected in a
given context. The cloud symbolwas used to representnetworks of
computing equipment in the original ARPANET by as early as 1977,and the
CSNET by 1981—bothpredecessorsto the Internet itself. Cloud computing
is the result of the evolution and adoption of existing technologies and
paradigms. The goal of cloud computing is to allow users to take benefit
from all of these technologies, without the need for deep knowledge about
or expertise with each one of them. The cloud aims to cut costs, and helps
the users focus on their core business instead of being impeded byIT
obstacles. Cloud computing provides the tools and technologies to build
data/compute intensive parallel applications with much more affordable
prices compared to traditional parallel computing techniques.
Why Learn about Cloud Computing?
Seen an acceleration in adoption of cloud computing and cloud services. It
is mentioned as one of the top 5 technology trends to watch in next 4-5
years by a report from Gartner.Everybody is talking about it,It’s a buzzword

Cloud Computing
Services and Solutions that are delivered and consumed in real time over
internet are Cloud Services. When you store your photos online, use
webmail or a social networking site, you are using a “cloud computing”
service. Cloud computing is a delivery modelof computing services over
the Internet. It enables real time development, deploymentand delivery of
broad range of products, services and solutions.
Types of Cloud Computing
Private Cloud (Internal Cloud): A cloud computing-like environment within
the boundaries (firewall) of an organization and typically for its exclusive
usage.
Public Cloud (External Cloud): A cloud computing environment that is
external to the boundaries of the organization, and openfor use to the
general public, whether individuals, corporations or other types of
organizations. Examples: Amazon's Web Services and Google appEngine.
Hybrid Cloud: A computing environment combining both private (internal)
and public (external) cloud computing environments.

Advantages of Cloud Computing
Resourcesflexibility.
Instant / real time.
Better hardware management.
Easier to share content “socialnetworking” Can access the applications
from anywhere, and at all times.
Money / CostEffective Pay for only what you use “pay per use” Saving
setup and monitoring costs.
Social Media
Social media is information content created by people using highly
accessibleand scalable publishing technologies.Socialmedia is the
collective of online communications channels dedicated to community-
based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration.

Facebook
Facebookis a social networking service and website started in February
2004.It is owned by Facebook,Inc. As of September2012,Facebookhas
over one billion active users. Users may make a personal profile, add other
users as friends, and send messages.Facebookusers must register before
using the site. Users may join user groups. These groups can be for a
workplace, school or college,or other interest. The name of the service
comes from the name for the book given to students at the start of the
schoolyear by some universities in the United States. These books help
students get to know each other better. Facebookallows any users who
say they are at least 13 years old to become users ofthe
website.Facebookwas started by Mark Zuckerberg with his college
roommates and fellow computerscience students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin
Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The website's membership was only for
Harvard students at first. Later it included other colleges in the Bostonarea,
the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It eventually opened for students
at other universities. After that, it opened to high schoolstudents, and,
finally, to anyone aged 13 and over. Based on ConsumersReports.orgin
May 2011,there are 7.5 million children under 13 with accounts. This
breaks the website's rules.A January 2009 Compete.com study ranked
Facebookas the most used social networking service by worldwide
monthly active users. Entertainment Weeklyput the site on its end-of-the-
decade "best-of" list. It said, "How on earth did we stalk our exes,
rememberour co-workers' Birthdays, bug our friends, and play a rousing
game of Scrabulous before Facebook? Quant cast estimates Facebook
had 138.9 million monthly differentU.S. visitors in May 2011. According to
Social Media Today, in April 2010 about 41.6% of the U.S. population had
a Facebookaccount. Facebook's growthstarted to slow down in some

YouTube
YouTube was one of the fastestgrowing sites on the Web,with more than
65,000 new videos uploaded and delivering 100 million video views per day
in July.[ It was ranked the fifth most popular website on Alexa, far out-
pacing even MySpace's rate of growth.[13] The website averaged nearly 20
million visitors per month, according to Nielsen/Net Ratings, with around
44% female and 56% male visitors. The 12- to 17-year-old age group was
dominant.[14] YouTube's pre-eminence in the online market was
substantial. According to the website Hitwise.com, YouTube commanded
up to 64% of the UK online video market. YouTube entered into a
marketing and advertising partnership with NBC in June 2006.The history
of YouTube began when PayPal employees created a video-sharing
website where users could upload, share and view content

Twitter
Twitter is an online news and social networking service where users post
and read short 140-charactermessagescalled "tweets". Registeredusers
can post and read tweets, but those who are unregistered can only read
them. Users access Twitter through the website interface, SMS or mobile
device app. Twitter Inc. is based in San Francisco and has more than 25
officesaround the world.
Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone,
and Evan Williams and launched in July, whereby the service rapidly
gained worldwide popularity. In 2012,more than 100 million users posted
340 million tweets a day, and the service handled an average of 1.6 billion
search queries per day. In 2013,it was one of the ten most-visited websites
and has beendescribed as "the SMS of the Internet". As of March 2016,
Twitter had more than 310 million monthly active users. On the day of the
2016 U.S. presidential election, Twitter proved to be the largest source of
breaking news, with 40 million tweets sent by 10 p.m. (East Coast Time)
that day

Instagram
Instagram is an online mobile photo-sharing site that enables its users to
take pictures and share them either publicly or privately on the app, as well
as through a variety of other social networking platforms, such as
Facebook,Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr. Users can also apply digital filters to
their images.Videos on Instagram debuted in June 2013,allowing
prerecorded square standard definition resolution clips of up to 15 seconds
to be shared; later improvements added supportfor widescreenresolutions
of up to 1080p and longer recording times for either prerecorded (up to one
minute) or disappearing live (up to one hour) videos. The service rapidly
gained popularity, with over 100 million active users as of April 2012 and
over 300 million as of December2014.Instagram is distributed through the
Apple App Store and Google Play. Supportfor the app is available for
iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Windows 10 devices and Android handsets,
while third-party Instagram apps are available for BlackBerry 10 and Nokia-
Symbian Devices. The service was acquired by Facebookin April 2012 for
approximately US$1 billion in cash and stock. In 2013,Instagram grew by
23%, while Facebook,as the parent company, only grew by 3%.

Google+
Google+ is an interest-based socialnetwork that is owned and operated by
Google. The service, Google's fourth foray into social networking,
experienced strong growth in its initial years, although usage statistics have
varied, depending on how the service is defined.Three Google executives
have overseenthe service, which has undergone substantial changes
leading to a redesignin November 2015. InNovember 2015,Google Plus
underwent a redesignwith the stated intent of making the site simplerand
faster, making the new features of Communities and Collections more
prominent, and removing features such as Hangouts, Events and Custom
URLs.[36]As of the November2016,users accessing the site using
desktop computers can still access some of the discontinued features by
selecting an option to go "Back to classic G+". Assessments ofGoogle+
growth have varied widely because Google first defined the service as a
social network, then later as "a social layer across all of Google's services",
allowing them to share a user's identity and interests. According to Ars
Technical, Google+ signups were "oftenjust an incidental byproductof
signing up for other Google services. “Consequently, the reported number
of active users on Google+ grew significantly, but the average time those
users spent on the site were a small fraction of that on comparable social
media services. In 2011 Google+ reached 10 million users just two weeks
after the launch. In a month, it reached 25 million. In October2011,the
service reached 40 million users, according to Larry Page. Based on
ComScore, the biggestmarket was the United States followed by India. By
the end of the year Google+ had 90 million users. In October2013,
approximately 540 million monthly active users made use of the social layer
by interacting with Google’s enhanced properties, like Gmail, +1 button,
and YouTube comments. Some 300 million monthly active users
participated in the social network by interacting with the Google+ social
networking stream.

But user engagementon Google+ was low compared with its competitors.
ComScoreestimated that users averaged just 3.3 minutes on the site in
January 2012, versus 7.5 hours for Facebook. In March 2013,average time
spent on the site remained low: roughly 7 minutes, according to Nielsen,
not including traffic via apps.InFebruary 2014,The New York Times
likened Google+ to a ghost town, citing Google stats of 540 million "monthly
active users", but noting that almost half don't visit the site. The company
replied that the significance of Google+ was less as a Facebookcompetitor
than as a means of gathering and connecting user information from
Google'svarious services.

Snapchat
Snapchat is an image messaging and multimedia mobile application
created by Evan Spiegel,BobbyMurphy, and Reggie Brown, former
students at Stanford University, and developedby Snap Inc., originally
Snapchat Inc. The prototype for Snapchat was started by Brown and
Spiegelas a projectfor one of Spiegel's classesat Stanford, where Spiegel
was a productdesign major. Beginning as "Pica boo",the idea was to
create a selfie app (application) which allowed users to share images that
were explicitly short-lived and self-deleting.The temporary nature of the
pictures would therefore encourage frivolity and emphasize a more natural
flow of interaction. When, in April 2011,Spiegelfloated the productidea in
front of his class as a final project, the classmates focused on the
impermanent aspectof the potential product, and balked at the thought of
temporary photos. Murphy was eventually brought into the projectto write
the source code for the application, and Pica boo first launched as an ios-
only app in July 2011 from Evan Spiegel'sliving room (who was still staying
at home with his father when not away at school). The application was re-
launched two months later under the name Snapchat. Snapchat evolved
into a mix of private messaging and public content, including brand
networks, publications, and live events such as sports and music.
Nevertheless, according to survey studies conducted in March 2016,the
personal oriented messaging was still being accessed byusers more than
the publicly offered contentthat was being presented.71% of users
surveyed said that they preferred the app for its chat, messaging, and
imaging services, versus 5% who almost exclusively chose the various
events, published features, and media content on a daily basis. 24%
respondedthat they accessedall features equally. However, about three
quarters of those surveyed were also familiar with the events, media
brands, and celebrity content, having a favorable opinion of those areas.
