Theme Of The Book Holes
Have you ever been accused of doing something you certainly didn t do? Have you ever had that
feeling that no matter how good you are and how hard you try to not mess up things just turn out?
Have you ever felt as if you were accident prone or if it was just pure bad luck?Well that s what
Stanley Yelnats felt since that was what actually happened in the book Holesby Louis Sachar. There
is a lot to this book, such as themes, characters, and quite a few different locations. The main theme
of this story, Holes, is growing up because, in this book Stanley learns a lot; he has a lot of
ambition, and he shows a ton of responsibility for his own actions, but also for others as well,
whether it will get him into some trouble or not. Stanley learns... Show more content on

He takes this trait and uses it. He shows it often because in the book he learns that not all his
unlucky events are due to his no good dirty rotten pig stealing great great grandfather s curse.
Stanley shows responsibility for his own actions and at one point others actions. So, tell me
Caveman, said Mr.Sir. How did my sack of sunflower seeds get in your hole? I stole it from your
trunk, Stanley answered.
(Sachar, 56)
This quote was chosen because Stanley says that he took the seed but really he was just
covering to make friends. Another example is when he tries to find Zero and attempts to steal
Mr.Sir s truck. In the moment he gets caught he realized that it was his fault that he got caught
and not his no good dirty rotten pig stealing great great grandfather s curse that had been set on
the family. In conclusion this book represents the theme of growing up because the main
character shows three of the characterististics of the theme I chose. These include learning,
ambition, and responsibility. Stanley learns a ton while at Camp Green Lake. He also shows lots
of ambition and displays many forms of responsibility. This book follows a great storyline, as well
as one about how the camp used to be. The story also includes many characters with different
personalities and could display way more than just one main

Effects of Motivation on Learned Helplessness
Effects of Motivation on Learned Helplessness Learned helplessness is a psychological condition in
which a human being or an animal has learned to act or behave helpless in a particular situation,
even when it has the power to change its unpleasant or even harmful circumstance (Seligman,
1975). This feeling of helplessness is generated when the individual has been exposed to previous
uncontrollable events and thus learns to fail in the current situation because responding in the past
had yielded insignificant results (Nation Massad, 1975). Therefore by attributing uncontrollable
negative outcomes to internal and lasting causes, people might perceive that future events will also
be uncontrollable. As such, helplessness is manifested in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From these inventories, the researchers found that the need for validation from others was
positively related to negative moods such as anxiety and depression. On the other hand, a person
who is more self reinforcing (higher intrinsic motivation) is less vulnerable to anxiety and
depression. This is mainly because individuals with a high need for reassurance from others
(extrinsically motivated) are more vulnerable to anxiety and depression when others are not present
to motivate them compared to intrinsically motivated individuals. Since learned helplessness is
often linked with depression (Abraham, Metalsky Alloy, 1989) extrinsically motivated individuals
are more prone to learned helplessness compared to intrinsically motivated individuals. Thus, this
research shows mixed results on whether motivation helps to reduce learned helplessness. The
present study hopes to show that motivation does help in reducing learned helplessness among
young adults. The study does not aim to replicate any of the earlier studies but serves as a brand
new experiment to affirm the fact that motivation helps in reducing learned helplessness. The
hypothesis to be proved is that motivation aids in reducing learned helplessness among young
adults. This concurs with the studies done by Seligman (1975), Kuhl (1981), Deci and Ryan (2000)
Boggiano and Barrett (1985) in the motivation helps to reduce learned

The Ginans Of The Pirs
In the Ginans, it is common to find usage of terminology and symbolism, which has a Hindu
background. This is because the majority of the addressees of the Pirs were Hindus and therefore
the Pirs incorporated symbolism, terminology, themes and ideas prevalent within the local milieu.
However, the underlying message in these verses is congruent with the teachings of Islam and
particularly with the Ismaili TarД«qah.
Acculturation, leading to a fusion of Ismaili beliefs and Hindu concepts to form the Ismaili belief
system, is undoubtedly a prominent feature of, but certainly not exclusive to, the Ginanic approach
of da wa (propagation of Faith). Similar traits are evident in other Ismaili traditions. For example,
during the Fatimide period, there was a synthesis of Ismaili beliefs with Neoplatonic and Gnostic
ideas, while during the AlamЕ«t period there was an assimilation of Ismaili concepts with Sufism.
The reason behind this approach is clearly straightforward to propagate the message of the Ismaili
Faith within the framework of the local milieu to acquire optimum results. This approach aptly
falls within the scope of the formula for da wa, prescribed by the Holy Qur an:
Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in
ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His Path,
and who receive guidance.
The mention of and reference to local symbols, themes and concepts

The Bastard Out Of Carolina Analysis
The film The Bastard out of Carolina tells the story of Ruth Anne Boatwright, called Bone
(Huston, 1996). Bone is born out of wedlock in the 1950 s, a time when being illegitimate is a
serious stigma. Bone s birth certificate declares her illegitimate, which marks her for life as an
outcast. Her mother, Anney, 15 years old at the time of Bone s birth, soon marries a good,
hardworking man named Lyle and has another daughter. However, Lyle dies in a car accident.
Anney then marries Glen, who treats Bone well at first and takes her out to do fun things. But
when her brother dies at birth, Glen begins to beat her and molest her regularly. Bone s life
becomes a living nightmare as she endures constant sexual and physical abuse. When her aunt
spots the abuse, she tells Bone s uncles, who beat Glen nearly to death. Bone and her mother,
however, continue to return to Glen each time Glen promises not to abuse Bone again. The film
ends with Bone freeing herself from Glen, but watching her mother leave with him. Her mother s
last act of love is to give Bone a new birth certificate without the stigmatizing illegitimate stamped
across it. Bone s final words in the film are of love for her... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although Bone is severely abused by Glen with her mother as a silent partner, Bone does not blame
them or stop protecting them. The family bond between Bone and Glen, formed in the first few
years of Anney and Glen s marriage, is changed but not broken by the abuse (Huston, 2016).
Eventually, Bone does want to be free of the abuse, but she continues to protect Glen, possibly from
the common tendency among children to not want anyone they love to get in trouble . Additionally,
she forgives her mother for abandoning her. Her final words indicate that she perceives the trauma
as normal and her mother s actions of staying with an abusive man as even

If I were Dinah, after talking to my manager and getting a response that he/she was not going to do

customer in tact while also not affecting the existing customer base.

The Ottoman Empire Essay
The Ottoman Empire
Around 1293 the chieftain of a nomadic Turkish tribe named Osman, founded an empire that would
endure almost six hundred years. As this empire grew by conquering lands of the Byzantine Empire
and beyond, it came to include, at its height, all of Asia Minor, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria,
Yugoslavia, Romania, Egypt, Crete, Cyprus, Palestine, and North Africa through Algeria; parts of
Hungry, Austria, Russia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Oman, U.A.E., and Syria. The elite tactics and
fearsome fighting of the well trained Janissary Corps helped make the Ottoman Empire one of the

Most of the Janissary soldiers were in the cavalry. The cavalry was one of the main keys to the
Ottoman s many victories. The Janissary Corp s soldiers were paid with a regular salary now
that the country was established and taxes were collected. Orhan s [son of Osman, the founder of
the Ottoman Empire] capture of Bursa in 1324 provided the first means for developing the
administrative, financial, and military power necessary to make this principality into a real state
and create an army ( J. F. von Hamer Pugstall 773). The Janissary Corps were the most awesome
force that Europe had contended with for centuries. They were the most fearsome fighters to attack
Europe since Gengis Khan s Golden Hordes. They fought like well trained animals. Orhan soon
was able to capture the remaining Byzantine towns in north western Antola: Iznik(1331),
Izmit(1337), and Uskudar(1338) (J. F. von Hamer Pugstall 771). 3 Murad conquered Thorace,
northwest of Constantinople in 1361. He moved the capital to Adrianople ( J. F. von Hamer

gained territory through marriage and purchases. Bayezed extended the empire in

The Pros And Cons Of The Vietnam War
The Vietnam War is one of the most controversial topics in American history, and even now it still
continues to be debated. With over three million deaths from the war, was it really worth it? From
the abominable outcome of this war, it is highly favorable that United States Troops should not
have been deployed to Vietnamdue segregation it caused within the American country and
resulting over 58,000 American deaths. As complex as this war may seem, this disputable
conflict started earlier in spite of what others might imagine. Vietnam is a southeastern Asian
country that has been occupied by the French since the early 19th Century. During War War II
Japanese forces invaded Vietnam. In order for the native Vietnamese to fight off both the French
Colonial Administration and the invading Japanese, political leader Ho Chi Minh inspired by
Soviet Communism, established the League of Independence of Vietnam. After Japan s defeat in
World War II in 1945, the Japanese withdrew their forces from Vietnam. The French educated
Emperor Bao Dai was now back in control of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh saw this as an opportunity to
finally gain control and almost immediately took control of the northern city of Hanoi. Ho Chin
Minh declared himself as president. In hopes to regain control of Hanoi, France backed Emperor
Bao and created the state of Vietnam in 1949. Although both sides wanted the same goal of uniting
Vietnam, their government views were drastically different. Ho and his followers wanted the
nation to be modeled after other communist countries. While Bao and his followers wanted their
country to be in close ties with democratic countries in the west. These causes led to a civil war for
the sole control of Vietnam.
The Vietnam War and active United States involvement in the war began in 1954, although the
ongoing conflict in the region had stretched back several decades. It wasn t until 1965 that
President Johnson, with the support of the general public, decided to deploy US combat forces to
battle in Vietnam. Eventually, 82,000 combat troops were stationed in Vietnam, and soon military
leaders were calling for 175,000 more men by the end of 1965 to help aid the struggling South
Vietnamese army. Disregarding

Hamlet Tragedy And Insanity Essay
To be, or not to be? That is the question (Shakespeare 50).
The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark was written by William Shakespeare as it became one
of the most influential plays in world literature from the Seventeenth to the Twentieth First Century.
In all honesty, William Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon , was regarded as the greatest playwright in
English literature as his most famed plays include Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. The prominent
trend in most of Shakespeare s writing is the use of tragedy as well as moral insanity, resulting in
the protagonist s demise. Shakespeare was successful in implementing elements of tragedy and
insanity in the phenomenal play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, as he captured the hearts of the
Elizabethans as well as our contemporary society.
Dr. James Cowles Prichard, a Bristol doctor in London, created a medical theory called the Theory
of Moral Insanity to describe individuals who display a series of irregular behavior.
There is a form of mental derangement in which the intellectual faculties [are uninjured], while the
disorder is manifested principally or alone in the state of feelings, temper, or habits... The moral...
principles of the mind... are depraved or perverted, the power of self government is lost or greatly
impaired, and the individual is... incapable... of conducting himself with decency... (Ozarin)
In other words, this means that a person who has absurd ideas is incapable to form pragmatic
decisions as they become corrupted with

Wilson Fisk Research Paper
Wilson Fisk, the kingpin of crime in the Netflix series Daredevil, evinces a perfect comic book
black and white mortality. The two sided criminal was loving to his mother, girlfriend, and in
his own perversive way, the city of New York. From a human psyche standpoint nevertheless;
what drove Fisk, what are his reasons for his criminal ways, and what caused him to be that
way? Fisk was born in New York City to a drunk father and a caring mother. His father constantly
beat his mother and made Fisk stare at the wall and hear his mother suffer. As this continued Fisk
had, had enough and walloped his father to death with a hammer, smashing his skull in with
every blow. His mother then decided to cut up her husband s body and dump a piece of it in the
river every night for weeks. The only thing that Fisk kept of his fathers were his cufflinks, which
he wore to remind him of his father s true nature. This event is what started Fisk s path to being
the Kingpin of New York. That s why I still wear these, to remind myself that I m not cruel for the

Police Interrogations And False Confessions
Police Interrogations and False Confessions
Introduction
Police interrogation is a technique that police have used to gather information from anyone
involved with a crime for hundreds of years. Police interrogations can last a few minutes to
several hours. The police have a right to continue questioning the suspect until they ask for a
lawyer (Kassin, 2013). The suspects call for a lawyer is a right under the Miranda Rights. In the
process of interrogation, the police are not allowed to use cruel or any unusual methods to collect
information, the law agents are trained with techniques to get the suspects to answer all the
questions. However, this is not usually the case because sometimes the police go overboard in
getting the suspects to answer their questions. This interrogation in some cases has led to false
confessions leading to the wrong charging of the suspects. An approximate of one out of four
confessions includes false confessions (Redlich, 2009). The false confessions made by suspects beg
the question on how the police influence false confessions. This research will discuss the various
techniques used by the police in interrogating suspects and how they misuse the systems to
influence false confessions.
Police Tactics and False Confessions
From the recent times, there have been various high profile cases of people being exonerated,
often by DNA evidence, after falsely giving false confessions to a crime or offence that they did
not commit. People who often fall

The Importance Of Violence In Sunday Bloody Sunday
Evil is extremely apparent in the world today, but for how long will people stand idly by as it
continues to worsen? The song Sunday Bloody Sunday, written by U2, suggests that the only valid
response to the violence that occurred in Northern Ireland in the 1970s is condemnation. The
writers not only condemn the brutality of that time, but, in a broader sense, condemn violence as a
whole, showing that there are no positive outcomes to violence, only more violence. Therefore,
people must rise up, united against the violence that exists in this world today.
An important aspect that is important to understand, regarding the theme of Sunday Bloody
Sunday, is the historical context around which it was written. Although U2 wrote the song
specifically about an event that took place on January 30, 1972, or Bloody Sunday, the violence
was a part of a more complicated and long running issue between Ireland and England. This
violence also took place as a result of a civil rights movement in Ireland that occurred from 1968
to 1969. Many of these activists looked up to people like Martin Luther King, Jr. for inspiration
about peaceful protest. Nonetheless, in 1969, after multiple occasions of violence at protests, the
British troops assumed riot duty (Pringle and Larson). This event became one of the inciting
incidents that led to the violence that happened on Bloody Sunday, only a few years later.
The issues with protesting, despite the presence of British troops, did not

Isaac Newton Light
As a result of Sir Isaac Newton s experiment, humans are able to have an understanding of the light
color spectrum; consisting of visible light, colors, and electromagnetic radiation, the light color
spectrum is only a very small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.
In 1666, Sir Isaac Newton set up an experiment that required a hole in a window shade, a glass
prism, daylight, and a darkened room. As the ray of daylight entered the room, its beam passed
through the prism. The light therefore then displayed onto a further off white wall as a dispersing
beam made up of various colors. This sight led to Newton s conclusion that white light comprises
of numerous types of light, each being from a single pure color bent in differing angle degrees. Now
using a converging lens to block out some colors and refuse others, Newton continued his
experiment. Consequently, he discovered that the new visible colors had appeared entirely distant
than the ones found in the natural developing spectrums. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although all electromagnetic radiation is light, our eyes can only perceive a small portion, known as
the visible light spectrum. Other names for the visible light spectrum are known as the optical

for the reason being that some parts of the visible spectrum contains wavelengths that are either too
big or too small and energetic for the human eye to comprehend. The additional wavelengths and
frequencies that are included in electromagnetic radiation and not in the visible light spectrum are

Narrative Essay On Agoraphobia
Have you ever imagined something in the highest esteem and when it came down to the
experience, it did not live up to the hype? This was true for me in my experience on a highly
anticipated visit to the so called happiest place on earth , with a name like that will the hype ever
be met or exceeded? Sleepless nights led up to the much anticipated trip to Disneyworld where
dreams of mice, princesses and magic danced in my head. It seems as if in an instant I woke up to
a nightmare when the agoraphobia set in. As a small child, it seemed as if my world revolved
around the catchy tunes and Technicolor that flooded the family television. Disney s fantasied
storytelling captured and enraptured me into its dream world with nothing less than my full
attention and excitement. As I danced and sang with wild abandon, these are the moments my

While I could have ran away from dissonant situations within the park I decided to take a
different approach to shifting the source of the dissonant elements in my mind. Here I had to
move forward from holding onto memories from the past by creating new ones with the same
characters I know and love. This was only possible due to the conscious decision to change my
perception of events as well as attitudes towards these when they proved to lean towards unsavory
such as standing in line for hours on end or the wanting desire to escape the midsummer heat. The
added effort allowed me to rationalize the values of what I was experiencing and to embrace it all.
A redefinition of my experiential goals lead to the modification of the importance that once lied

The Role of Fate in Macbeth
Fate has sundry meanings. One of the meanings of fate: power that predetermines events. Destiny s
definition suggests that events will occur and do not change. Whatever unravels in life cannot
change by mankind. The statement has undivulged meanings; fate has the opportunity to change if
the person wants events to end differently. However, wrong decisions will only seal fate. In
Shakespeare s Macbeth, The fate becomes confirmed through Lady Macbeth wanting more power,
Macbeth s inner conflict, and the three witches tricking Macbeth and leading him to his demise.
The witches give Macbeth prophecies that come true; but do not always work out right. The
witches are talking about the confusion they will make Fair is foul, and foul is fair.... Show more

White Tailed Deer Article Summary
In the journal article White Tailed Deer as Keystone Species within Forest Habitats of Virginia the
authors, William J. McShea and John H. Rappole, go in depth to how white tailed Deer affect the
abundance and distribution of vertebrate species in Virginia. The authors hypothesized that White
Tailed Deerinfluence the arrangement of winged creatures and warm blooded animals indirectly
through changing of the natural surroundings and specifically through the utilization of shared

within the Shenandoah National Park, the National Zoo s Conservation and the Research Center in

Song Analysis Of Concrete Angel
The song I chose is a song sung by Martina McBride, a country singer, called Concrete Angel. The
song was written by Rob Crosby and Stephanie Bentley, later released on November 18, 2002. The
song is about a young girl, Angela Carter, who doesn t have the most stable and safest home. At
home she is domestically abused by her drugged mother, neglected and forced to take care of
herself; she packs her own school lunch, walks to school by herself, and is wearing the same dress
showing her mom does not care to give her new clothes. When watching the music video, in the
beginning children are laughing at her, which shows she is bullied, another main theme tackled in
the song. The bruises are seen by her teacher and the neighbors hear her... Show more content on

The girl has no authority figure, a careless mother, no father, and no other adult to rescue her. A
third social force would be Theory of Self, formation of self through interactions with significant
others. Through the lack of recourses, having to hide her abuse and the neglect of her mother,
she s forced to put on a strong front, keep her home life a secret, and pretend everything is okay
although it s not; through the wind and the rain she stands hard as a stone in a world that she
can t rise above. Her home life and lack of relationships with others really takes a toll on her
happiness and sometimes she wishes she was never born. A fourth social force would be related
to the child abuse and neglect, there s actually two sociological phenomenon and norm breaking.
It s considered a sociological phenomenon because it is not an innate behavioral pattern for
human beings to follow. Abusing and your child, is not only a norm breaking but also breaking
the law. Norms today when it comes to a child is expected of the parent to love, take care, and
provide for them, not to beat them. This was not the case at all in Concrete Angel, for her mother
constantly beat her, never showed any love towards her or took care of her. Another norm
violated would be with the teacher and neighbors; they heard or saw signs of abuse but never
stepped up to save the girl from the abuse. They hid behind fear and turned a blind

Community Gardens at this University Essay
A Growing University: Community Gardens
Humanity, when striving to create a more perfect world, may have difficulties in choosing a place
to begin. However, in light of the direction much of humanity is quickly going, it seems obvious
where to look. All over the world, urban populations are rapidly growing.
Researchers predict that the time when 50% of the world s population lives in cities is quickly
approaching ( News and Highlights 1). As urban populations increase, hunger becomes a growing
concern. Thus, it is necessary to restructure the way food is produced in order to more efficiently
feed the world s growing population. The answer lies in urban agriculture.

The vegetables produced would be based on the needs of the local residents. Ethnic foods specific
to the community s needs would also be grown. The garden could be placed on an unused plot of
land owned by the university.
Ideally, the plot would be about 20 sq. ft. This would allow ample space for students to grow a
variety of produce. In addition, separate plots could be set aside for special classes and research
projects. Food produced on the farm would provide a local food source for surrounding residents,
as well as university students, staff, and faculty. The produce would be distributed to the
2
residents of the neighborhood through a Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA).
Each subscriber to the program would receive a certain amount of fresh vegetables each week,
which they would pay for in a monthly fee. Any profits made from the CSA program would be
used to support the garden s operations.
The garden would serve as a model of urban agriculture, an educational tool, and also help
university reach out to the surrounding community. Food production skills are emphasized in many
cities across the world, where urban agriculture is the normal and most practical route for food
production.

of a traditional bard through which music was transmitted. A traditional griot could do everything
from recounting history to composing music, to teaching students, to acting as diplomats; this
includes storytellers, singers and oral historians. The griot keeps records of the births, deaths,
marriages through generations of the village or family. They are the master of the oral traditions
and ceremonies at life events. They play a key role in the West African Mande society. The kora,
ngoni and the balafon are three vital melody instruments of the griot. They are found throughout the

Examples Of Corruption In The Man Of The People
Man of the People Corruption comes primarily in two forms evil and political in most cases
when discussing a government or person. Corruption in the government is typically due to
money and the desires of the people who or person who creates the government system.
Corruption is viewed as evil because a person with bad intentions or personal interest that only
benefits him or she is considered corrupt. In the Man of the People, Chief Nanga is considered
corrupt in many ways, but in the African society, he was not considered corrupt as the book may
allude to. The people of the African society were accustomed to such behavior and treatment.
Ultimately the concepts of corruption are viewed differently depending on what that society
may view as corrupt and what is the norm. In the Man of the People, it discusses an African
society were Odili and Nanga have a personal feud over Edna, who leads to Odili quest to
overthrow Nanga as the chief who is considered corrupt. In the Man of the People, Odili
threatened to have him in Nanga in the newspaper, but Nanga asked Odili did he have a feeling
for Edna (Man of the People, p.g. 72). In addition, to Odili personal feud with Nanga, he also had
a feud with him politically. Odili is one of the characters who recognizes Nanga corrupt ways
and tries to rise up against his rule. Odili faces tough obstacles gaining the people s trust because
they were accustomed to the society in which they lived in. Whether you asked in the city or the
village Nanga was a man of the people (Man of the People, p.g. 1). The people in the society did
not view the government as corrupt because they have endured corruption for so long and breaking
societal norms are very difficult in a society. Thus, the function corruption in the book serves as a
small ideain the mind as the reader may connect corruption to them as evil, while the corruption
is a norm. Thus, the idea of corruption does not really relate towards Nanga if his own people as
a whole, do not view him as corrupt. Chief Nanga tactics are legitimate tactics because he was
more than likely accustomed to ruling and having as he, please. Nanga is used to having any
women he desires and anything that is within his reach. Nanga is a chief,

Grade Rate And Its Effect On College Education
Title Grade inflation is the increase in grade point averages without an associated increase in
student ability. This increase, however so slight, has had a profound effect on college education
across the board. It undermines the only scale to which aptitude is readily tested, devalues a
degrees worth, and while it shields students from failure in the classroom, it does not prepare them
to deal with it later in life. Sadly, gradeinflation occurs at almost every level of learning.
Some may say that students are just smarter (Primack 79). However, as a knowledge base
increases, the grading scale should expand slightly to fit it. Meaning that even if students are
smarter, course work will become tougher to challenge those students (Harding 21). The
grading scale will only shift so to speak to include the increase in knowledge. For example, when
I finished middle school, I transferred to an Early College. I had heard it would be difficult, but
I had no clue just how hard it would be. My entire life up to that point had been full of successes
and most importantly, grades that never dropped below an A. Before Early College, I had never
had to study for a test, or really even do my homework to the best of my ability. On the first test,
I made an 80. I was shocked. After talking to my principal, I realized that in middle school, trying
wasn t needed to get a good grade. But at Early College, I had to put forth the effort to get the
grade I wanted. Material was harder and

Expuality Of An Outsiders In The Doll s House By Katherine...
Hey look, a fish out of the water! Fish are right at home in the water, it s where they are most
comfortable. If you grab a fish out of that environment and drop it onto dry land, well, it s
obvious what will happen. The fish will wiggle and flop around as it desperately tries to retrieve
back to home. Thus, with this expression, a fish being completely out of their element while on
land is being applied metaphorically to people who appear uncomfortable in certain situations. Or,
How strange, a six foot man in a midget convention. If you take the six foot man in the convention

These idioms are an accurate representation of how the experience of an outsider is universal. The

How To Put My Incapacitated Dog
On Wednesday, June 18, 2003, I had finalized the decision to put my incapacitated dog to rest. It
became a reality. I clearly remember the warm, breezy day that occurred two weeks ago. As I sat
in the freshly cutgrass of my front yard, I paid no attention to the sounds of the birds that were
singing or the leaves that were dancing on the trees. All that was on my mind was the details of
the last 13 years and remembering the times we shared together. As I kept trying to convince
myself that he would not have to suffer another day from his ailments, I kept thinking of the first
day that he came into my life. I was 15 years old when I got Valen. It was Valentine s Day
in 1990.
Earlier that week my motherwas near Port Jervis, New York on a business trip. She had some free
time before she had to come home to Pennsylvania so she decided to stop at the local SPCA. Her
intentions were to simply look at the animals and then leave. She made her way to the area that
housed the dogs. There she found a shy, but friendly, golden retriever. He was a bit apprehensive at
first, almost as if he was neglected and abused, but it didn t take much of my mom s gentle touch
and her soft, subtle voice before this dog realized she was his savior. She decided that she would
like to adopt this dog however, the policy was strict, and there was a seven day waiting period
before you could adopt an animal. This was in place to allow ample time for the owner to claim
their animals if they got astray. As much as my mom wanted to leave that day with the dog, she
had to wait. It was on Tuesday, February 13, 1990 that my mom received a call from the SPCA.
They were pleased to have the opportunity to offer her the dog through adoption since no one had
come forward to claim him. She decided that she would go back to New York the next day to pick
him up. On Valentine s Day, I got home from school and to my surprise I was greeted at the door
by this vivacious, brown eyed golden retriever. I was so excited and I immediately sat down on
the cold, ceramic floor and played with my new friend. We rolled all over the floor and I was
giggling as he licked my face, and at the same time, he was whimpering with happiness. We did this

Fortune Favors The Bold Quotes
Fortune favors the bold. is a deep and inspirational quote by Virgil, an Ancient Roman poet of the
Augustan Period. This quote has a very stirring meaning and shows me the true significance of this
saying. The complex message passed through this quote is covered up by words that seem to have
no deep meaning. Virgil actually meant that if one is strong enough to try, amazing things can be
accomplished. Many are afraid to try because they don t want to make mistakes. But because of
Virgil, I understand why it is better to try than to sit and do nothing because of a foolish fear. I, and

Benjamin Franklin, a politician turned scientist, was known for many things, including his
involvement with the Patriots during the Revolutionary War, his printing skills, and many
famous experiments that happened after his turn into the subject of science. Benjamin Franklin
was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston. He was the tenth son of Josiah Franklin, a soap maker,
and Abiah Folger. His kite experiment exemplifies Virgil s quote as an act of bravery to get
excellent consequences. Ben Franklin believed that lightning was electricity, and that it might be
transferable, which could prove that it was indeed electricity. He proved it with this experiment.
On a gloomy June afternoon in 1752 Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin, then 46, decided to fly his
new homemade kite. He tied an iron key to a silk string, then attached it to a kite. Franklin held
onto a silk ribbon fixed onto the key. He moved into the barn so as to not get wet. The negative
charges from the lightning traveled from the kite all the way to the key. Ben didn t get shocked
because the ribbon provided insulation, but when he touched the iron key, he got an electrical
shock. He knew the ramifications of doing this experiment, which included death. But he still did it,
and along with it, came marvelous outcomes, still useful today. He invented the lightning rod based
on the discovery of the conduction of energy. A lightning rod

Hobby Lobby The Court Reiterated
In Hobby Lobby the Court reiterated its interpretation that a corporation has rights similar to that of
an individual (Citizens United v. FEC), since corporations are composed of individuals, and thus
are due the rights granted in the RFRA. The Court in Hobby Lobby found that providing
contraception, and access to reproductive healthcare, serves the compelling state interest of public
health and welfare. In parallel, this Court found that ensuring that people have coverage by health
care providers is a compelling state interest. Hobby Lobby correctly applied the test of strict scrutiny
, and required that the mandate be the least restrictive means of advancing this compelling
government interest. This is where the mandate failed as applied to Hobby Lobby. The Court
found the mandate could not be applied to private corporations in order to require them to
provide reproductive healthcare. In contrast, in the case at hand, the rule prohibiting multiple
spouses as beneficiaries of a health insurance policy is the least restrictive way to advance a
compelling government interest; that being the ability to provide the public with insurance in
order to advance public health and welfare. Therefore, RFRA is not a basis upon which Mr.
Bridges can claim his rights are violated if the insurance does not cover more than one wife. In
conclusion, RFRA is not the basis for requiring health insurance to cover both Germanotta s and
Maraj s claims. Now the Court will decide whether

Illegal Immigration Reform in America Essay examples
One of the most controversial topics today in politics is what to do about illegal immigration in the
United States. Should we consider all of the illegal immigrants felons? Should we give them full
citizenship rights? These are all important questions related to illegal immigration. In 1986, the
Immigration Reform and Control Act made it illegal for employers to knowingly hire
undocumented workers and imposed fines of up to $11,000 for each violation. Recently, the United
States House of Representatives passed a bill, entitled H.R. 4437 (The Border Protection,

Those that have been here less than two years will be the only people that will have to leave the
country. I do believe that illegal immigrants do contribute to the economy in some ways, like
doing many of the jobs that most citizens will not do. My opponents would counter by saying
that Immigrants helped build this country and that immigrants come to America for a better life
and end up investing their money here, buying houses, and opening businesses that help the
economy. When addressing the fact that there are roughly 12 million illegal immigrants here
and this Act could quite possibly make them all felons, many wonder where we are going to put
all of these felons. Our prisons are already overpopulated and adding millions more is completely
out of the question. Also, many people opposing this Act believe that if we got rid of all of the
illegal immigrants that our society would quickly fall into an economic depression. They believe
that they are such a vital part of our economy that we could not afford to deport them. I agree that
our country cannot afford to consider all 12 million of the immigrants here illegally felons. One of
the many reasons why we have so many illegal immigrants in the country is partly due to the fact
that the number of immigration investigators in the U.S. fell from 240 in 1999 to just 65 in 2004,
according to the Government Accountability Office.

device that can be thought as a gun. The second screen has a surface that can record or detect any
wave or particle that manages to pass through the slits and strike the screen. As will be seen,
sometime the researcher will open just one slit and other times both slits. The experiment is
conducted in stages in order to contrast waves from particles.
In the first stage a series of bullets (particles) will be fired toward the barrier with one slit open.
As expected a vertical pattern of bullet holes will appear behind slit 1. After opening the second
slit and firing another volley, a second vertical pattern will appear right next to the first one. In
other words the bullets behave just like particles in accordance with classical physics as would be
expected.
In stage two a monochromatic light (light with just one wavelength) will be emitted toward the
screen. This is in contrast to the light from a normal light bulb that is composed of many differing
wavelengths (making it difficult to observe the interference pattern). The second screen is coated
with a chemical that illuminates when impacted by light. When the monochromatic light is emitted
with only one slit open, a pattern of brightness appears just behind the slit. But with both slits open
an interference pattern is observed consisting of bright bands where constructive interference
occurred and dark bands where destructive interference occurred. Again, this is just what is
expected.

years of schooling before we reach college. Some may feel as if high schoolis it for them and they
have retained all of the information they need and have learned the proper amount of knowledge
needed in order to be successful in life. However, for others, their path in life is different. Some
need to further in knowledge in order to have a career in higher paying jobs, for example, if you

school diploma. That is definitely common knowledge, of course you re going to need to further
your schooling in order to obtain the skills and tools needed in order to be successful in that career

Are Competitive Sports Really Good for Kids?
Competitive sports are a topic that is still heavily debated on, even today. Most people have
formed a very strong opinion on this issue, and on whether or not competitive sports is
detrimental to children s and teens health and well being. However, I believe that when children
and teens play competitive sports, this leads to many downsides, and negative side effects,
including: the increased risk of health issues compared to other types of sports, a decreased
enjoyment of the actual activity, and the loss of kids and teens confidence and self esteem, which
could lead to other, but no less important, issues, such as substance abuse and stress, due to the
competitive and winning focused nature of these kinds of sports. ... Show more content on

There have been multiple, very severe cases in which people, even adults, have died or been
heavily injured while playing competitive sports. For one, several N.F.L. veterans have been
exhibiting Alzheimer s like symptoms in their 40 s. Troy Aikman couldn t remember a Super Bowl
victory, and Steve Young retired due to concussions. In addition, teenagers have died after playing
too soon after a concussion, which was received while they were playing competitive sports.
(Cohen, 2009, http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/29/sports/football/29cohen.html) Some studies
even suggest that competitive sports, which not only involve intense activity, but aggressive
emotions, as well, are more likely to result in a heart attack than any other forms of exercise,
according to the New York Times. This shows that competitive sports can be very dangerous, and,
sometimes, fatal. This is a risk that people must first consider,

Michiko Takahashie Diary Analysis
Hello diary. My name is Michiko Takahashi and I am fifteen years old. I live on a very small
farm on the outskirts of Vancouver, British Columbia. I went to Prince of Wales secondary
school. I absolutely love photography so there will definitely be photos included in my journal. I
have a little sister named Akiko which means bright child and a little brother named Kazuhiko
which means harmonious prince . We call him Kiki. My older brother s name is Daichi which
means great wisdom . I am writing in this diarybecause I can write whatever I want to, for example,
my thoughts and feelings, and nobody can judge me. I can write my opinions and thoughts here
without my parents judging me. Sometimes our ideas clash, but I love them anyway.... Show more

I really couldn t write yesterday because my annoying, older brother found out about my diary.
He stole it and hid it. I wonder if he read it. I highly doubt it because I have a sturdy lock on it,
and my diary wasn t completely shredded up. It was completely unharmed which I found really
weird. He also denied ever taking it which didn t help things at all for him because I found my
diary sitting on his bed. I wasn t even snooping through his room. I couldn t find my diary and
was panicking, and when I was walking past Daichi s room, I saw it sitting right out in the open on
his bed. Thank goodness it was still shut.

I really hate the way that Japanese people are treated in Vancouver right now.
I saw some signs today and they completely ruined my day. I am honestly so terrified of being
killed, or taken to internment camps. I just want to stay where I am and never go out again. If
anyone of Japanese descent went into any of the restricted areas, they would be put into prison.
Because they are Japanese, the sentence would probably be extremely unfair. Actually since
Mother lost her job a few months ago (only because she is Japanese) she was considering
homeschooling me and my siblings. This would be nice, as we wouldn t have to go out of our
home. With our current financial situation that isn t possible, which is very

Disney World Caption
Social Media has a long lasting effect on our society today. Many people base their perception of
someone off their social media pages (i.e. how many likes they receive, how often they post, or
their captions). I chose to analyze the picture above due to the uplifting sense it gives off. As you
lay eyes on this picture, most people can immediately tell where it was taken, Disney World. Disney
World is often referred to as The happiest place on earth , and portrayed as an attraction where
people of any age can have a great time. As you can see in this picture, my friend Dante and I are
exceedingly happy. We re not smiling like most people would in a picture, but we re throwing up

They typically convey what you re trying to get across by sharing the picture with your family
and friends. The caption I placed under this picture conveys that it is almost impossible not to
be happy in Disney World. It shows that I truly enjoyed my time here and I was extremely
delighted with my experience. At the end of my caption I placed two emoji s, a star and a
crown. I placed these emoji s there to emphasize the feeling of magic that I experienced in
Disney World. I enjoy including emoji s at the end of my captions because I believe it adds to
the glamour and fun of your Instagram profile. In addition to the emoji s, I included a hashtag
towerofterrordidntphaseme , which is placed there to emanate a sarcastic feeling. Tower of
terror is typically classified as one of the scarier rides at Disney World, as a result many would
interpret this hashtag as a joke and assume that tower of terror tormented me, in which it did. I
also included a hashtag europetodisney , which implies Dante and I traveled to Europe together
prior to Disney World, showing that we are close friends who enjoy traveling together. This caption
is simply one sentence, but an abundance of ideas and feelings can be

Moral Decay Of The Great Gatsby
The inevitable failure of the American Dream and the tragic death of Jay Gatsby conveyed in F.
Scott Fitzgerald s novel The Great Gatsby exemplifies the moral decay of the 1920s. Fitzgerald
is critical of a hedonistic society consumed in materialism, he expresses this through the men and
women who dazzled like champagne and stars at Gatsby s parties, which were taken by the root
in society to live the perfect world of their own. James Gatz achieves his dream of self
transformation. He acquires wealth and status and becomes Jay Gatsby. It is Gatsby s unrealistic
reach for the green light at the end of the Buchanans dock and all that it represents his fulfilled
dream. Fitzgerald structured this novel as an allegory, the forgery of the Gatsby... Show more

These were points where society fails to obligate Gatsby s dream. Fitzgerald exposes the
American society and the value of Gatsby to the society. In a society that relies on luxuries,
Gatsby throws parties to attract Daisy s attention. Gatsby expresses his same needs to be keeped
busy, just as Daisy does. Nick describes Gatsby as never quite still, there was always a tapping
foot somewhere or the impatient opening and closing of a hand (Fitzgerald, pg 68). Gatsby fills
his house full of interesting people...who do interesting things (Fitzgerald, pg 96). Taking this
issue into consideration, those who filled Gatsby s house was only there to enjoy the illegal
alcohols, music and party. Nevertheless, Gatsby wasn t ever aware of who walked in or out of
his house. He only focused on Daisy s appearance. Towards the end, Gatsby build his life onto
two aspects, the first being is to build relationships to the wealthy such as Dan Cody or Meyer
Wolfsheim for money and the second is two build relationships to people who are connected to
Daisy. However, Gatsby is unable to make social connections because of his own social
awkwardness, which as becomes more and more apparent, he compensates this with his wealth
and possessions. The best example of this is Gatsby s parties, in which the guests all have an
excellent time, and know of Gatsby, but know almost nothing about him, even to the point
where nobody seems to know where he even came from. Gatsby s awkwardness and fear of real
people causes him to close himself off even at his own parties, and hope that somehow the good
time people have admired him more but towards the end Gatsby dream is inevitable failure
because Gatsby wasn t known as greatness or did succeed by proving his purpose or identity to the

In terms of Westpac s enterprise agreement there was a major industrial issue regarding the loss of
jobs and employees had a vote in order to ensure that their rights and working conditions were met
with Westpac s enterprise agreement.
In the workplace, the instrument that is widely addressed and has created ongoing conflict in
the workplace is parental leave. Paid parental leave allows the employees to be covered by
working conditions which allows them to be accommodated from recuperation from birth (
(Baird, Whelan , Page , 2009) According to human services department by law parental leave
pay lasts for at least eighteen weeks for employees to take time off to take care of their newborns
or infants ( (Human Services , 2014) However, according to Westpac s conditions those employees
that are permanent in the workplace are only given thirteen weeks of paid parental leave including
superannuation pay, therefore this created industrial conflicts regarding the unpaid parental leave.
The workplace parental leave conditions are protected by the Paid Parental Leave Act (2010),
which ensures that employees are given financial support to care for their newborns .The parental
scheme is problematic as some employees have argued that their parental leave conditions are not

Persian Gulf War Essay
The Persian Gulf War all started because of one country s greed for oil. Iraq accused Kuwait of
pumping oil and not sharing the benfits, and Kuwait was pumping more oil than allowed under
quotas set by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, it decreased the price of oil, Iraq
s main export. Iraqs complaints against Kuwait grew more and more harsh, but they were mostly
about money. When Iraqi forces began to assemble near the Kuwaiti border in the summer of
1990, several Arab states tried to intervene the dispute. Kuwait didn t want to look weak so they
didn t ask for any help from the United States or other non Arab powers for support. Arab

Still other countries made other contributions: Turkey allowed air bases on its territory to be used
by coalition planes, and Japan and Germany gave financial support. The primary goal of the force
was to prevent further Iraqi action, but most countries were aware the force might eventually be
used to drive Iraq from Kuwait.
The Iraqis tried to prevent and split the growing international coalition through several means.
They made it clear that their adversaries would pay heavily if war broke out, and they hinted they
would use chemical weapons and missile attacks on cities. Iraq also held citizens of coalition
countries who had been in Kuwait at the time of the invasion and said they would be held in
militarily camp areas in effect using them as human shields to prevent coalition attacks. Iraq
finally released the last of the foreigners in December 1990 under pressure from several Arab
nations. The coalition s greatest military concern during the closing months of 1990 was that Iraqi
forces would attack before coalition forces were fully in place, but no such attack took place.
On November 29, with coalition forces over whelming in Saudi Arabia and Iraq showing no signs
of retreat, the

Malcolm Gladwell once stated, ten thousand hours of deliberate practice are needed to become
world class in any field (Gladwell). In other words, Malcolm believed that an individual who
dedicated thousands of hours to a specific occupation would manifest success. Similarly, this ten
thousand hour rule could apply to a certified specialist in appellate law because anyone able to
meet the challenge and educational requirements to become a certified appellate specialist would
have spent at least ten thousand hours practicing in this specific field. According to John Derrick

Mobile Operating Systems Should Be Responsible For...
Introduction
Nowadays, we are currently in the era of technology and people increasingly use technology in a
day to day activity, for instance, smart watch, mobile application, GPS or in vehicle infotainment.
Therefore, there are a lot of interactions stemming from those applications towards users, which
notify them when applications need to convey the message. In this research, we argue that mobile
operating system should be responsible for managing user attention as a resource. As the current
operating system uses permission based models, which enables application to incessantly interrupt
users and then allow users to make decision whether they would like to deny or not based on their
circumstance. The operating system should use their valuable resource, in which OS incorporates
with diverse kinds of applications and information on mobile s users, to predict the right decision of
each interaction based on the user s current activity. However, there are many key challenges in
implementing this notion as well, which will be expounded in this paper.
Overview
According to Lee, Flinn Noble (2015), managing user attention as a resource ought to be the role
of operating system, however, it is essential to deliver the appropriate input to the OS in order to
operate a good decision. One of the important aspects mentioned in Lee, Flinn Noble (2015) is that
the domain specific knowledge, which could be used as a resource in managing user attention and
predicting the right

Piano Concert Review
On April 12, 2016 I attended Susan Davis and Dr. Robert Wells Bach, Rach and Blues piano
selections from Baroque period to the modern Blues Era. This was great experience for me

entire concert. It was also a great experience because I gotten the chance to see my musicprofessor

to see my music professor (Mrs. Davis) play an entire piece. This concert gave inspiration to go
after my once and now childhood dreams of playing the piano. I just love to hear the melody of
the piano because its gives the music a new sound with a deeper meaning. Mrs. Davis s class
really gave insight on the baroque which help me understand the era being tribute to in the

The Importance Of Technology During The Civil War
Technology after the civil war included railroad systems, steamboats and telegraphs. The rail
road systems were important civil war technology. They keep the war moving and also help
bring supplies to troops. The union s railroads and trains were superior to the confederates
because the north was all about industry so they already had railroads and trains all throughout the
northern regions. The south had railroads as well but the didn t have as many tracks. One
example of how the railroad systems being used in the war is the battle of bull run. The railroads

Steamboats were another type of important technology used during the civil war. Steamboats played
a critical role in the civil war, mostly on the confederate side because they permitted the rapid
movement of heavy cargo up and down the waterways. Both union and confederate armies relied
on steamboats in places like arkansas to move troops and supplies to shipping hubs like jefferson
county and prairie county.
Communication was necessary to win the civil war inventions like the telegraph and the typewriter
were helpful to both armies. An important piece of technology used in the civil war was the
telegraph. The telegraph was one of the most effective technologies used in the civil war. The
telegraph was important because it allowed commanders to instantly communicate with each other.
One example of how the telegraph helped changed america significantly was how abraham lincoln
got news on the war from generals. Utopian communities in 19th century America were considered
by most people to herald a new age in human civilization. Often led by charismatic leaders with

  • 2. Theme Of The Book Holes Have you ever been accused of doing something you certainly didn t do? Have you ever had that feeling that no matter how good you are and how hard you try to not mess up things just turn out? Have you ever felt as if you were accident prone or if it was just pure bad luck?Well that s what Stanley Yelnats felt since that was what actually happened in the book Holesby Louis Sachar. There is a lot to this book, such as themes, characters, and quite a few different locations. The main theme of this story, Holes, is growing up because, in this book Stanley learns a lot; he has a lot of ambition, and he shows a ton of responsibility for his own actions, but also for others as well, whether it will get him into some trouble or not. Stanley learns... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He takes this trait and uses it. He shows it often because in the book he learns that not all his unlucky events are due to his no good dirty rotten pig stealing great great grandfather s curse. Stanley shows responsibility for his own actions and at one point others actions. So, tell me Caveman, said Mr.Sir. How did my sack of sunflower seeds get in your hole? I stole it from your trunk, Stanley answered. (Sachar, 56) This quote was chosen because Stanley says that he took the seed but really he was just covering to make friends. Another example is when he tries to find Zero and attempts to steal Mr.Sir s truck. In the moment he gets caught he realized that it was his fault that he got caught and not his no good dirty rotten pig stealing great great grandfather s curse that had been set on the family. In conclusion this book represents the theme of growing up because the main character shows three of the characterististics of the theme I chose. These include learning, ambition, and responsibility. Stanley learns a ton while at Camp Green Lake. He also shows lots of ambition and displays many forms of responsibility. This book follows a great storyline, as well as one about how the camp used to be. The story also includes many characters with different personalities and could display way more than just one main ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Effects of Motivation on Learned Helplessness Effects of Motivation on Learned Helplessness Learned helplessness is a psychological condition in which a human being or an animal has learned to act or behave helpless in a particular situation, even when it has the power to change its unpleasant or even harmful circumstance (Seligman, 1975). This feeling of helplessness is generated when the individual has been exposed to previous uncontrollable events and thus learns to fail in the current situation because responding in the past had yielded insignificant results (Nation Massad, 1975). Therefore by attributing uncontrollable negative outcomes to internal and lasting causes, people might perceive that future events will also be uncontrollable. As such, helplessness is manifested in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From these inventories, the researchers found that the need for validation from others was positively related to negative moods such as anxiety and depression. On the other hand, a person who is more self reinforcing (higher intrinsic motivation) is less vulnerable to anxiety and depression. This is mainly because individuals with a high need for reassurance from others (extrinsically motivated) are more vulnerable to anxiety and depression when others are not present to motivate them compared to intrinsically motivated individuals. Since learned helplessness is often linked with depression (Abraham, Metalsky Alloy, 1989) extrinsically motivated individuals are more prone to learned helplessness compared to intrinsically motivated individuals. Thus, this research shows mixed results on whether motivation helps to reduce learned helplessness. The present study hopes to show that motivation does help in reducing learned helplessness among young adults. The study does not aim to replicate any of the earlier studies but serves as a brand new experiment to affirm the fact that motivation helps in reducing learned helplessness. The hypothesis to be proved is that motivation aids in reducing learned helplessness among young adults. This concurs with the studies done by Seligman (1975), Kuhl (1981), Deci and Ryan (2000) Boggiano and Barrett (1985) in the motivation helps to reduce learned ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Ginans Of The Pirs In the Ginans, it is common to find usage of terminology and symbolism, which has a Hindu background. This is because the majority of the addressees of the Pirs were Hindus and therefore the Pirs incorporated symbolism, terminology, themes and ideas prevalent within the local milieu. However, the underlying message in these verses is congruent with the teachings of Islam and particularly with the Ismaili TarД«qah. Acculturation, leading to a fusion of Ismaili beliefs and Hindu concepts to form the Ismaili belief system, is undoubtedly a prominent feature of, but certainly not exclusive to, the Ginanic approach of da wa (propagation of Faith). Similar traits are evident in other Ismaili traditions. For example, during the Fatimide period, there was a synthesis of Ismaili beliefs with Neoplatonic and Gnostic ideas, while during the AlamЕ«t period there was an assimilation of Ismaili concepts with Sufism. The reason behind this approach is clearly straightforward to propagate the message of the Ismaili Faith within the framework of the local milieu to acquire optimum results. This approach aptly falls within the scope of the formula for da wa, prescribed by the Holy Qur an: Invite (all) to the Way of thy Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching; and argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious: for thy Lord knoweth best, who have strayed from His Path, and who receive guidance. The mention of and reference to local symbols, themes and concepts ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Bastard Out Of Carolina Analysis The film The Bastard out of Carolina tells the story of Ruth Anne Boatwright, called Bone (Huston, 1996). Bone is born out of wedlock in the 1950 s, a time when being illegitimate is a serious stigma. Bone s birth certificate declares her illegitimate, which marks her for life as an outcast. Her mother, Anney, 15 years old at the time of Bone s birth, soon marries a good, hardworking man named Lyle and has another daughter. However, Lyle dies in a car accident. Anney then marries Glen, who treats Bone well at first and takes her out to do fun things. But when her brother dies at birth, Glen begins to beat her and molest her regularly. Bone s life becomes a living nightmare as she endures constant sexual and physical abuse. When her aunt spots the abuse, she tells Bone s uncles, who beat Glen nearly to death. Bone and her mother, however, continue to return to Glen each time Glen promises not to abuse Bone again. The film ends with Bone freeing herself from Glen, but watching her mother leave with him. Her mother s last act of love is to give Bone a new birth certificate without the stigmatizing illegitimate stamped across it. Bone s final words in the film are of love for her... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Bone is severely abused by Glen with her mother as a silent partner, Bone does not blame them or stop protecting them. The family bond between Bone and Glen, formed in the first few years of Anney and Glen s marriage, is changed but not broken by the abuse (Huston, 2016). Eventually, Bone does want to be free of the abuse, but she continues to protect Glen, possibly from the common tendency among children to not want anyone they love to get in trouble . Additionally, she forgives her mother for abandoning her. Her final words indicate that she perceives the trauma as normal and her mother s actions of staying with an abusive man as even ... At that meeting, I would start off and thank Dinah for bringing the Partco matter to my attention. I would try to have a consensus between the two of us and also suggest that we have a team meeting within the department to address the internal friction and discuss how we can move beyond our differences and return to a productive environment. After considering what happened, I would have challenged Fred on the need to communicate the change in life span of the product to the customer and suggest that we strategize on how it the communication could be accomplished in a productive and positive manner. 2. I believe Dinah was right to believe that it was unethical to not let the customer know about the change in life span of the product; however, I disagree with her calling the customer directly. I believe she should have either tried to get her manager to take action on her request or go to another manager in the company. If I were Dinah, after talking to my manager and getting a response that he/she was not going to do something about the matter, I would have gone to another manager in the company regarding the issue. • 8. The Ottoman Empire Essay The Ottoman Empire Around 1293 the chieftain of a nomadic Turkish tribe named Osman, founded an empire that would endure almost six hundred years. As this empire grew by conquering lands of the Byzantine Empire and beyond, it came to include, at its height, all of Asia Minor, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, Romania, Egypt, Crete, Cyprus, Palestine, and North Africa through Algeria; parts of Hungry, Austria, Russia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Oman, U.A.E., and Syria. They were brought up in the Janissary camp from about the age of 5. They were trained to be fearsome warriors, although some were trained to be administrators. Most of the Janissary soldiers were in the cavalry. The cavalry was one of the main keys to the Ottoman s many victories. The Janissary Corp s soldiers were paid with a regular salary now that the country was established and taxes were collected. Orhan s [son of Osman, the founder of the Ottoman Empire] capture of Bursa in 1324 provided the first means for developing the administrative, financial, and military power necessary to make this principality into a real state and create an army ( J. F. von Hamer Pugstall 773). The Janissary Corps were the most awesome force that Europe had contended with for centuries. They were the most fearsome fighters to attack Europe since Gengis Khan s Golden Hordes. They fought like well trained animals. Orhan soon was able to capture the remaining Byzantine towns in north western Antola: Iznik(1331), Izmit(1337), and Uskudar(1338) (J. • 10. The Pros And Cons Of The Vietnam War The Vietnam War is one of the most controversial topics in American history, and even now it still continues to be debated. With over three million deaths from the war, was it really worth it? From the abominable outcome of this war, it is highly favorable that United States Troops should not have been deployed to Vietnamdue segregation it caused within the American country and resulting over 58,000 American deaths. As complex as this war may seem, this disputable conflict started earlier in spite of what others might imagine. Vietnam is a southeastern Asian country that has been occupied by the French since the early 19th Century. During War War II Japanese forces invaded Vietnam. In order for the native Vietnamese to fight off both the French Colonial Administration and the invading Japanese, political leader Ho Chi Minh inspired by Soviet Communism, established the League of Independence of Vietnam. After Japan s defeat in World War II in 1945, the Japanese withdrew their forces from Vietnam. The French educated Emperor Bao Dai was now back in control of Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh saw this as an opportunity to finally gain control and almost immediately took control of the northern city of Hanoi. Ho Chin Minh declared himself as president. In hopes to regain control of Hanoi, France backed Emperor Bao and created the state of Vietnam in 1949. Although both sides wanted the same goal of uniting Vietnam, their government views were drastically different. Ho and his followers wanted the nation to be modeled after other communist countries. While Bao and his followers wanted their country to be in close ties with democratic countries in the west. These causes led to a civil war for the sole control of Vietnam. The Vietnam War and active United States involvement in the war began in 1954, although the ongoing conflict in the region had stretched back several decades. It wasn t until 1965 that President Johnson, with the support of the general public, decided to deploy US combat forces to battle in Vietnam. Eventually, 82,000 combat troops were stationed in Vietnam, and soon military leaders were calling for 175,000 more men by the end of 1965 to help aid the struggling South Vietnamese army. • 11. Hamlet Tragedy And Insanity Essay To be, or not to be? That is the question (Shakespeare 50). The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark was written by William Shakespeare as it became one of the most influential plays in world literature from the Seventeenth to the Twentieth First Century. In all honesty, William Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon , was regarded as the greatest playwright in English literature as his most famed plays include Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth. The prominent trend in most of Shakespeare s writing is the use of tragedy as well as moral insanity, resulting in the protagonist s demise. Shakespeare was successful in implementing elements of tragedy and insanity in the phenomenal play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, as he captured the hearts of the Elizabethans as well as our contemporary society. Dr. James Cowles Prichard, a Bristol doctor in London, created a medical theory called the Theory of Moral Insanity to describe individuals who display a series of irregular behavior. There is a form of mental derangement in which the intellectual faculties [are uninjured], while the disorder is manifested principally or alone in the state of feelings, temper, or habits... The moral... principles of the mind... are depraved or perverted, the power of self government is lost or greatly impaired, and the individual is... incapable... of conducting himself with decency... The two sided criminal was loving to his mother, girlfriend, and in his own perversive way, the city of New York. From a human psyche standpoint nevertheless; what drove Fisk, what are his reasons for his criminal ways, and what caused him to be that way? Fisk was born in New York City to a drunk father and a caring mother. His father constantly beat his mother and made Fisk stare at the wall and hear his mother suffer. As this continued Fisk had, had enough and walloped his father to death with a hammer, smashing his skull in with every blow. His mother then decided to cut up her husband s body and dump a piece of it in the river every night for weeks. The only thing that Fisk kept of his fathers were his cufflinks, which he wore to remind him of his father s true nature. This event is what started Fisk s path to being the Kingpin of New York. • 17. Police Interrogations And False Confessions Police Interrogations and False Confessions Introduction Police interrogation is a technique that police have used to gather information from anyone involved with a crime for hundreds of years. Police interrogations can last a few minutes to several hours. The police have a right to continue questioning the suspect until they ask for a lawyer (Kassin, 2013). The suspects call for a lawyer is a right under the Miranda Rights. In the process of interrogation, the police are not allowed to use cruel or any unusual methods to collect information, the law agents are trained with techniques to get the suspects to answer all the questions. However, this is not usually the case because sometimes the police go overboard in getting the suspects to answer their questions. This interrogation in some cases has led to false confessions leading to the wrong charging of the suspects. An approximate of one out of four confessions includes false confessions (Redlich, 2009). The false confessions made by suspects beg the question on how the police influence false confessions. This research will discuss the various techniques used by the police in interrogating suspects and how they misuse the systems to influence false confessions. • 19. The Importance Of Violence In Sunday Bloody Sunday Evil is extremely apparent in the world today, but for how long will people stand idly by as it continues to worsen? The song Sunday Bloody Sunday, written by U2, suggests that the only valid response to the violence that occurred in Northern Ireland in the 1970s is condemnation. The writers not only condemn the brutality of that time, but, in a broader sense, condemn violence as a whole, showing that there are no positive outcomes to violence, only more violence. Therefore, people must rise up, united against the violence that exists in this world today. An important aspect that is important to understand, regarding the theme of Sunday Bloody Sunday, is the historical context around which it was written. Although U2 wrote the song specifically about an event that took place on January 30, 1972, or Bloody Sunday, the violence was a part of a more complicated and long running issue between Ireland and England. This violence also took place as a result of a civil rights movement in Ireland that occurred from 1968 to 1969. Many of these activists looked up to people like Martin Luther King, Jr. for inspiration about peaceful protest. Nonetheless, in 1969, after multiple occasions of violence at protests, the British troops assumed riot duty (Pringle and Larson). This event became one of the inciting incidents that led to the violence that happened on Bloody Sunday, only a few years later. The issues with protesting, despite the presence of British troops, did not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Isaac Newton Light As a result of Sir Isaac Newton s experiment, humans are able to have an understanding of the light color spectrum; consisting of visible light, colors, and electromagnetic radiation, the light color spectrum is only a very small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. In 1666, Sir Isaac Newton set up an experiment that required a hole in a window shade, a glass prism, daylight, and a darkened room. As the ray of daylight entered the room, its beam passed through the prism. The light therefore then displayed onto a further off white wall as a dispersing beam made up of various colors. This sight led to Newton s conclusion that white light comprises of numerous types of light, each being from a single pure color bent in differing angle degrees. Now using a converging lens to block out some colors and refuse others, Newton continued his experiment. Consequently, he discovered that the new visible colors had appeared entirely distant than the ones found in the natural developing spectrums. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 28. Examples Of Corruption In The Man Of The People Man of the People Corruption comes primarily in two forms evil and political in most cases when discussing a government or person. Corruption in the government is typically due to money and the desires of the people who or person who creates the government system. Corruption is viewed as evil because a person with bad intentions or personal interest that only benefits him or she is considered corrupt. In the Man of the People, Chief Nanga is considered corrupt in many ways, but in the African society, he was not considered corrupt as the book may allude to. The people of the African society were accustomed to such behavior and treatment. Ultimately the concepts of corruption are viewed differently depending on what that society may view as corrupt and what is the norm. In the Man of the People, it discusses an African society were Odili and Nanga have a personal feud over Edna, who leads to Odili quest to overthrow Nanga as the chief who is considered corrupt. In the Man of the People, Odili threatened to have him in Nanga in the newspaper, but Nanga asked Odili did he have a feeling for Edna (Man of the People, p.g. 72). In addition, to Odili personal feud with Nanga, he also had a feud with him politically. Odili is one of the characters who recognizes Nanga corrupt ways and tries to rise up against his rule. Odili faces tough obstacles gaining the people s trust because they were accustomed to the society in which they lived in. Whether you asked in the city or the village Nanga was a man of the people (Man of the People, p.g. 1). The people in the society did not view the government as corrupt because they have endured corruption for so long and breaking societal norms are very difficult in a society. Thus, the function corruption in the book serves as a small ideain the mind as the reader may connect corruption to them as evil, while the corruption is a norm. Thus, the idea of corruption does not really relate towards Nanga if his own people as a whole, do not view him as corrupt. • 29. Grade Rate And Its Effect On College Education Title Grade inflation is the increase in grade point averages without an associated increase in student ability. This increase, however so slight, has had a profound effect on college education across the board. It undermines the only scale to which aptitude is readily tested, devalues a degrees worth, and while it shields students from failure in the classroom, it does not prepare them to deal with it later in life. Sadly, gradeinflation occurs at almost every level of learning. Some may say that students are just smarter (Primack 79). However, as a knowledge base increases, the grading scale should expand slightly to fit it. Meaning that even if students are smarter, course work will become tougher to challenge those students (Harding 21). The grading scale will only shift so to speak to include the increase in knowledge. For example, when I finished middle school, I transferred to an Early College. I had heard it would be difficult, but I had no clue just how hard it would be. My entire life up to that point had been full of successes and most importantly, grades that never dropped below an A. All that was on my mind was the details of the last 13 years and remembering the times we shared together. It was Valentine s Day in 1990. Earlier that week my motherwas near Port Jervis, New York on a business trip. She had some free time before she had to come home to Pennsylvania so she decided to stop at the local SPCA. Her intentions were to simply look at the animals and then leave. She made her way to the area that housed the dogs. There she found a shy, but friendly, golden retriever. He was a bit apprehensive at first, almost as if he was neglected and abused, but it didn t take much of my mom s gentle touch and her soft, subtle voice before this dog realized she was his savior. She decided that she would like to adopt this dog however, the policy was strict, and there was a seven day waiting period before you could adopt an animal. This was in place to allow ample time for the owner to claim their animals if they got astray. As much as my mom wanted to leave that day with the dog, she had to wait. It was on Tuesday, February 13, 1990 that my mom received a call from the SPCA. They were pleased to have the opportunity to offer her the dog through adoption since no one had come forward to claim him. She decided that she would go back to New York the next day to pick him up. On Valentine s Day, I got home from school and to my surprise I was greeted at the door by this vivacious, brown eyed golden retriever. I was so excited and I immediately sat down on the cold, ceramic floor and played with my new friend. Fittingly, he broke one more record when he was named the FIFA Ballon d Or winner for the fourth time in January 2013. • 34. Fortune Favors The Bold Quotes Fortune favors the bold. is a deep and inspirational quote by Virgil, an Ancient Roman poet of the Augustan Period. This quote has a very stirring meaning and shows me the true significance of this saying. The complex message passed through this quote is covered up by words that seem to have no deep meaning. Virgil actually meant that if one is strong enough to try, amazing things can be accomplished. Many are afraid to try because they don t want to make mistakes. But because of Virgil, I understand why it is better to try than to sit and do nothing because of a foolish fear. I, and many historical figures including Benjamin Franklin, followed this quote, perhaps without even knowing it. On several occasions throughout my life, I unknowingly... Benjamin Franklin, a politician turned scientist, was known for many things, including his involvement with the Patriots during the Revolutionary War, his printing skills, and many famous experiments that happened after his turn into the subject of science. Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston. He was the tenth son of Josiah Franklin, a soap maker, and Abiah Folger. His kite experiment exemplifies Virgil s quote as an act of bravery to get excellent consequences. Ben Franklin believed that lightning was electricity, and that it might be transferable, which could prove that it was indeed electricity. He proved it with this experiment. On a gloomy June afternoon in 1752 Philadelphia, Benjamin Franklin, then 46, decided to fly his new homemade kite. He tied an iron key to a silk string, then attached it to a kite. Franklin held onto a silk ribbon fixed onto the key. He moved into the barn so as to not get wet. The negative charges from the lightning traveled from the kite all the way to the key. Ben didn t get shocked because the ribbon provided insulation, but when he touched the iron key, he got an electrical shock. He knew the ramifications of doing this experiment, which included death. But he still did it, and along with it, came marvelous outcomes, still useful today. He invented the lightning rod based on the discovery of the conduction of energy. A lightning rod ... • 35. Hobby Lobby The Court Reiterated In Hobby Lobby the Court reiterated its interpretation that a corporation has rights similar to that of an individual (Citizens United v. FEC), since corporations are composed of individuals, and thus are due the rights granted in the RFRA. The Court in Hobby Lobby found that providing contraception, and access to reproductive healthcare, serves the compelling state interest of public health and welfare. In parallel, this Court found that ensuring that people have coverage by health care providers is a compelling state interest. Hobby Lobby correctly applied the test of strict scrutiny , and required that the mandate be the least restrictive means of advancing this compelling government interest. This is where the mandate failed as applied to Hobby Lobby. The Court found the mandate could not be applied to private corporations in order to require them to provide reproductive healthcare. In contrast, in the case at hand, the rule prohibiting multiple spouses as beneficiaries of a health insurance policy is the least restrictive way to advance a compelling government interest; that being the ability to provide the public with insurance in order to advance public health and welfare. Therefore, RFRA is not a basis upon which Mr. Bridges can claim his rights are violated if the insurance does not cover more than one wife. In conclusion, RFRA is not the basis for requiring health insurance to cover both Germanotta s and Maraj s claims. Now the Court will decide whether ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Illegal Immigration Reform in America Essay examples One of the most controversial topics today in politics is what to do about illegal immigration in the United States. Should we consider all of the illegal immigrants felons? Should we give them full citizenship rights? These are all important questions related to illegal immigration. In 1986, the Immigration Reform and Control Act made it illegal for employers to knowingly hire undocumented workers and imposed fines of up to $11,000 for each violation. Recently, the United States House of Representatives passed a bill, entitled H.R. 4437 (The Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal ImmigrationControl Act of 2005). Those that have been here less than two years will be the only people that will have to leave the country. I do believe that illegal immigrants do contribute to the economy in some ways, like doing many of the jobs that most citizens will not do. My opponents would counter by saying that Immigrants helped build this country and that immigrants come to America for a better life and end up investing their money here, buying houses, and opening businesses that help the economy. When addressing the fact that there are roughly 12 million illegal immigrants here and this Act could quite possibly make them all felons, many wonder where we are going to put all of these felons. Our prisons are already overpopulated and adding millions more is completely out of the question. Also, many people opposing this Act believe that if we got rid of all of the illegal immigrants that our society would quickly fall into an economic depression. They believe that they are such a vital part of our economy that we could not afford to deport them. I agree that our country cannot afford to consider all 12 million of the immigrants here illegally felons. One of the many reasons why we have so many illegal immigrants in the country is partly due to the fact that the number of immigration investigators in the U.S. fell from 240 in 1999 to just 65 in 2004, according to the Government Accountability Office. ... The second screen has a surface that can record or detect any wave or particle that manages to pass through the slits and strike the screen. As will be seen, sometime the researcher will open just one slit and other times both slits. The experiment is conducted in stages in order to contrast waves from particles. In the first stage a series of bullets (particles) will be fired toward the barrier with one slit open. As expected a vertical pattern of bullet holes will appear behind slit 1. After opening the second slit and firing another volley, a second vertical pattern will appear right next to the first one. In other words the bullets behave just like particles in accordance with classical physics as would be expected. In stage two a monochromatic light (light with just one wavelength) will be emitted toward the screen. This is in contrast to the light from a normal light bulb that is composed of many differing wavelengths (making it difficult to observe the interference pattern). The second screen is coated with a chemical that illuminates when impacted by light. When the monochromatic light is emitted with only one slit open, a pattern of brightness appears just behind the slit. But with both slits open an interference pattern is observed consisting of bright bands where constructive interference occurred and dark bands where destructive interference occurred. Again, this is just what is expected. In the third stage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Competitive sports are a topic that is still heavily debated on, even today. Most people have formed a very strong opinion on this issue, and on whether or not competitive sports is detrimental to children s and teens health and well being. However, I believe that when children and teens play competitive sports, this leads to many downsides, and negative side effects, including: the increased risk of health issues compared to other types of sports, a decreased enjoyment of the actual activity, and the loss of kids and teens confidence and self esteem, which could lead to other, but no less important, issues, such as substance abuse and stress, due to the competitive and winning focused nature of these kinds of sports. ... • 54. The Battle Of The Kosovo War The first battle of the Kosovo war which was meticulously planned with stomach revolting malice was less than a mile from my house and it resulted in the death of over 50 members of the Jashari family. As the Serbian Army surrounded the three homes the Jashari s began to prepare for the onslaught that was to come. Their plans were soon useless as they were required to get off of the backroads. Gani and Besnik drove onto the main road that leads to Mitorvica and travelled on that road for a little over a mile. They spotted an armored vehicle belonging to the Serbian Army and decided to continue driving past it. Unfortunately, the vehicle turned around and began following them. Gani had a hand grenade in the center ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
