George Eastman was many things. He left a great legacy for himself and established
an amazing foundation for the Kodak Camera. Before starting any type of work in
any field, he went to public school for seven years. Public education is where he got
the foundational education for his later camera invention. He didn t begin his camera
work until much later in life.
In his early working years, he was well established in an insurance office, a book
office, and studied scientific books for his own knowledge. These early jobs didn t
pay well, however, they allowed him to earn a living to support his family before

The, The Former Capital Of China
Nanjing is the former capital of China. During this time, Japan was attempting to
take over the entire nation of China. Japan had developed a plan to take over all of
China in a span of just three months, starting with the invasion of Beijing. What the
Japanese weren t expecting was for China to put down a fight. With frustration
arising and their plan falling apart, the Japanese decided to take over Chinas capital,
Nanjing. During the Battle of Shangai, Japanese army forces proved their
dominance over the Chinese and took over in November. Following the Japanses
victory at Shangai, 50,000 Japanese soldiers began their march to China s capital:
Nanking. Although the Japanese were greatly outnumbered, they fought to the death,
entering the city on December 13, 1937. They were ordered to kill all captives,
leading to 90,000 Chinese soldiers surrendering (The History Place, 2000).
Japan s history leading up to the massacre is an intriguing one. Unfriendly relations
between Japan and China had an uprising in the early 1900 s. Before this rivalry
began, Japan, growing as a military power, had intentions of taking over China and
Korea. In 1876, Japan and Korea signed the Treaty of Kanghwa, making Korea
unilaterally independent, weakening China s hold on Korea. March of 1894, a
domestic rebellion by the anti foreigner Tonghak cult against the Korean monarchy
was jointly put down by both Japanese and Chinese troops. After the revolt was

The novels Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad and Things Fall Apart by Chinua
Achebe share a common theme; both deal with the colonization of Africa by settlers
from Europe. When one examines the motives for this imperialist attitude in each
book, one notices that in both books the motivation for colonization revolves around
the gaining of wealth. However Conrad and Achebe define wealth differently. In
Heart of Darkness the Europeans view wealth economically, such as the trading of
ivory. In Things Fall Apart the idea of wealth is viewed by Europeans as belonging

You would think they were praying to it (Conrad 39). Marlow s words demonstrate
the colonists love of ivory and shows that it has been elevated in importance almost
to a position of a god. From this extreme want of the ivory, one can say that ivory is
wealth in the minds of the settlers in Heart of Darkness.
As stated above, the main reason for colonization of Africa is for the settlers to
gain wealth. However, each type of society can define wealth in different ways. In
Heart of Darkness wealth was ivory, but in the book Things Fall Apart one can see
that the settlers define wealth as the degree to which their religion is accepted by
the Africans. This is evident when Mr. Smith says, He saw the world as a
battlefield in which the children of light were locked in mortal conflict with the
sons of darkness (Achebe 184). From this statement one discovers that Mr. Smith
sees his purpose in Africa is to convert the sons of darkness into children of the
light. One can also see that Mr. Smith has adopted a Manichean allegorical view of
the members of each of the religions. According to Mr. Smith The children of the
light are the Christian members and the sons of darkness are the Africans who cling
to their traditional religion. Using this term to describe the Christians puts a positive

When comparing The Conditions of the Working Class in England and The
Environmental Conditions of the Working Class these both talk about how
difficult it was to live there and the different opinions between Engel s and Clark.
After reading through Clark s environmental conditions these defiantly don t
compare to what we live in today. Starting off with something that people in
America don t face is The condition of human and environmental degradation
extended form the factory to the home. In factories, workers labored in poisoned
environment and in ways that cause innumerable health problems. This is not a
problem for us today because we have a lot of technology/ uniforms that protect us
from being poisoned. The one thing I did find interesting about this article is that
Clark states that conditions of the working class was that those in power, who
profited off of the misery and suffering of workers and who know that these
conditions were the consequence of such a social system, were collectively guilty
of murder. In the passage of the that Engels has written it touches on the three

number two how the upper class won t help the lower class out and act like they
don t exists and the last one is how no one can get along and help each other out. In

Thoreau Rhetorical Analysis
In Thoreau s speech From Resistance to Civil Government, the most famous
sentence might be: If one HONEST man, in this State of Massachusetts, ceasing to
hold slaves, were actually to withdraw from this co partnership, and be locked up in
the country jail, therefor, it would be the abolition of slavery in America. Well, if I
were to standing by him at that moment, there is one question I want to ask him:
you, as the one HONEST man, has visited the jail already, then are you still giving
this speech? Why hasn t slaverybe abolished by now? Therefore, we can see that
although Thoreau advocates for the power of individual changes, he knows it is
going to take collective effort for any significant changes to happen. Everyone knows,
including him, that one person s withdraw of support from the governmentcan never
result in abolition; it will take a thousand people. However, Thoreau recognizes that
because of this way of thinking, people have been seeing themselves as a
dispensable agent. They will never take action if they keep waiting for more people
to get on board in the revolution. Thus, to break this death cycle, Thoreau tries to
shift people s attention away from believing that majority effort is needed, and
instead makes people believe that one single personis all it takes to change
everything, even though it was in fact not the case. The first step Thoreau takes to
foster people s beliefs of their own power, is to compare government as an machine
that has friction . By equating the government as just a machine, Thoreau invites his
audience to see government as an artificial invention whose entire existence is to
function and serve people s need. Then, Thoreau asserts that when the machine is a
little friction , people can ignore it, because it is still in their best interest to keep it
running; but when the friction comes to have its machine , we need to repair this
machine. Obviously, he think it was the time to take action immediately against
slavery and the Mexican war. In order to encourage people to stop paying taxes
immediately, he has to eliminate people s fear toward acting against the authority. So
Thoreau uses this metaphor as a illusion to debunk the fearsome image of government
