Definition
Computer network: A collection of
computing devices that are connected in
various ways in order to communicate and
share resources
J.C.R Licklider
Introduced an idea of
Intergalactic Network
His idea involved the
Global computer
network that allowed
everyone to access
every information
from anywhere in the
world.
How many kinds of Networks?
• Based on transmission media: Wired (UTP,
coaxial cables, fiber-optic cables) and Wireless
• Based on network size: LAN and WAN (and
MAN)
• Based on management method: Peer-to-peer
and Client/Server
• Based on topology (connectivity): Bus, Star,
Ring …
Network topologies
A network topology describes the
arrangement of systems on a
computer network. It defines how the
computers, or nodes, within the network
are arranged and connected to each other.
Some common network topologies include
star, ring, line, bus, and tree
configurations.
Types of Network Topologies
a) Star topology
b) Ring topology
c) Line topology
d) Tree topology
e) Bus topology
Star Topology: One central node is connected to
each of the other nodes on a network.
Ring topology: Each node is connected to
exactly two other nodes, forming a ring.
Line : Nodes are arranged in a line, where most
nodes are connected to two other nodes. However,
the first and last node are not connected like they
are in a ring.
Tree : One "root" node connects to other nodes,
which in turn connect to other nodes, forming a tree
structure.
Bus Topology: Each node is connected to a central
bus that runs along the entire network.
Benefits of computer
networks
• Increase in productivity
• Cost savings
• Less disk storage
• Easy maintenance
Purposes of computer
networks
 Sharing peripheral devices
 Sharing of programs and data
 Communications
 Remote access
 Information Security
Groupware
Software that provide facilities for working
computers in one group is called groupware.

THE MAIN
TERM…………
INTERNET
Internet
The internet is a network of a large
number of computer networks In the
world.
There are three types of computers:
1. HOST
2. SERVERS
3. USERS
Services of internet
I. World wide web
II. File transfer protocol
III. Electronic Mail
IV. Telnet
V. Gopher
Intranet And
Extranet
Intranet: The internal network of an organization is
called Intranet. It is small version of internet.it is
mostly used within the organization
Extranet: It is mostly used by authorized single
user from outside the company.
Components of
networks
Bridge
Router
Gateway
BRIDGE
Used to connect similar types of networks
ROUTER
Reads the destination address
Network
Protocols
Network Protocols are a set of rules or
procedures for sending information over
the network
