1. NETWORKING: WHAT AND WHY.
2. THINGS FOR GOOD COMMUNICATION.
3. TRANSMISSION MEDIA.
INDEX:
Networking is W&W.
• Networking is a connection of
AUTONOUMOUS computers, which are
interconnected, with the help of a single
technology.
• Basic motto behind establishment a
computer network is
a. Business application.
b. Home application.
Application of computer networking..
Business Application
• Sharing of Resources.
• Sharing of
knowledge/Technology.
• Email/E-commerce.
• Communication
purposes.
Home Application
• Access to remote information.
• Person to person
communication.
• Interactive entertainment.
• Electronic commerce.
• Saving money.
Things for good communication.
• A SET OF SOURCES.
• A SET OF RECEIVER.
• MESSAGE.
• MEDIUM.
• PROTOCOLS.
TRANSMISSION MEDIA
• Any thing that can carry message from source
to a destination.
• The message/information is usually a signal
that is the result of a conversion of data from
another form.
• It can be any wire(guided media) or any other
unguided media(in case of wireless
communication).
• Guided may be STP,ScTp,UTP,co-axial,OPTICAl
fibre. And unguided media is Air.
Idea about media cables:
STP-
• Shielded twisted-pair cable
combines the technique of
shielding , cancellation,
Twisting of wires. Each pair of
wires is wrapped in metallic
foil.it is usually 150 ohm
cable. Also known as FTP.
Use- Ethernet network
installation.
Sctp-
• ScTp is essentially UTP
wrapped in a metallic foil,or
screen.
• It usually 100 or120-ohm.
• The metallic shielding
materials in STP and sctp need
to be grounded at both ends.
• If any discontinuties are
present then it become to be
major noise problems through
shield who act like an antenna
• Picking up unwanted signals.
• However STP & Sctp still have
their role in Europe.
UTP
• Utp is a four-wire medium-composed of pair of wires-
used in a variety of networks.
• Each pair of wires is twisted around each other.
• Utp has an external diameter of
approx.43cm,its small size can be advantageous
during installing a network in older building.
• When utp cable is installed using an RJ
connector, potential sources of network noise are
greatly reduced and a good solid connection is
practically guaranteed.
Networking media
3). Coaxial cable:
For LANs co-axial cable
offer
Several advantages-
covering longer
distance,can run without
repeaters.
Larger diameter &
variation in size and more
expensive to install than
twisted pair.
 4.Optical fiber cable.
• Speed &throughput:
100+mbps
• Average per node: Most
expensive.
• Media &connector size:
small.
• Single mood(laser
generated light),max.cable
length:up to 3000m
• Multimode (Led generated
light):upto 2000m.
Thank you..
