This document provides guidance on interpreting compost test results. Bangalore city generates about 4,500 metric tons of municipal solid waste every day in that 75% is disposed in the landfill. The landfill leachate discharge may lead to serious environmental problems. Leachate may percolate through landfill liners and subsoil causing pollution of ground water and surface waters resources. The aim of this research study is to identify the characteristics of the leachate from landfill in Mavallipura. Landfill leachate contains various pollutants that can be categorized into four groups such as dissolved organic matter, inorganic macrocomponents, heavy metals, and organic compounds. The pH of the leachate is considered as alkaline as the pH is 7.6 in Mavallipura landfill leachate. The results showed that the highest metal concentration that exists in the leachate was Iron which is about of 12 ppm. BOD
and COD of the leachate are 1500 mg/L and 10400 mg/L, respectively. The leachate characteristics indicate favourable growth of algae in natural water contaminated with leachate with the alkaline condition and with the presence of magnesium as nutrient, which has been confirmed in the nearby surface pond.
Screening and acclimation of efficient simultaneous nitrification and denitri...IJERA Editor
Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) bacteria can complete nitrification and denitrification processes under aerobic conditions simultaneously, which has some obvious advantages in comparison with traditional method for nitrogen removal, such as reducing energy consumption and construction cost. Three SND bacteria strains, YX3, YX4 and YX6 were isolated from a polluted river and identified as Pseudomonas spp. by phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rDNA sequencing. After cultivated in liquid heterotrophic ammoniation medium at 30°C by shaking at 150 rpm for 3 d, the NH4+-N removal rates of strains YX3,YX4 and YX6 were 93.50%, 91.50% and 91.00%, respectively; and the total nitrogen removal rates of YX3, YX4 and YX6 were reached 85.75%, 87.33% and 90.46%, respectively. The NO3--N removal rates of strains YX3, YX4 and YX6 were 87.24%, 89.88% and 88.73%, respectively, after cultivated in liquid denitrification medium at 30°C by shaking at 150 rpm for 3 d. These results show that all these strains were capable of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. When strains YX3, YX4 and YX6 were faced to high ammonia pharmaceutical wastewater, NH4+-N concentrations decreased from 500±78.47 to 238.14±63.77mg/L, 155.82±79.95 mg/L and 214.62±92.69 mg/L, respectively, after cultured at 150 rpm and 30°C for 3 d. After four months of acclimation, the NH4+-N remove rates were improved significantly under the same culture conditions and the NH4+-N concentrations decreased linearly from 500±81.79 to 151.9±88.70mg/L, 94.73±58.66 mg/L and 114.49±56.84 mg/L of strains YX3, YX4 and YX6, respectively. All the strains showed rather steady features in bio-denitrification of high ammonia pharmaceutical wastewater after acclimation under laboratory conditions. This suggests that all the three strains have great application potential in high ammonia nitrogen pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

wastewater with 490-4900 mg/L COD (average 1793 mg/L) and removed COD with average efficiency 97%;
the final effluent respected always emission limits.

The purpose of this study was to obtain a relationship between the ratio of
BOD/COD and partition coefficient octanol/water (Pow) for glucose, lactose, sucrose,
formaldehyde, acetic acid and oxalic acid. This relationship was supported by the
toxicity test of each organic material on fish. The results show that the lower the
BOD/COD ratio, the higher the Pow coefficient, which means more organic matter
leads to biomass. Among the organic materials studied, formaldehyde has the lowest
BOD/COD ratio (<0.1) and highest Pow (>4) and was supported by the results of its
toxicity in fish having the lowest LC-50 (24 mg/L). Whereas lactose has the highest
BOD/COD ratio (>0.9) and lowest Pow (<0.7) with the highest LC-50 (851 mg/L). The
rest of the organic substances have characteristics in the range of lactose and
formaldehyde.
The bleaching chemistry indicates that pH affects the effectiveness of chlorine dioxide treatment and
the standard recommendations has been to maintain a final stage pH range for brightening with chlorine
dioxide between 3.5 and 4.0. But we used 16% & 17% TAA cooked Clone EH2013 of kappa number 18.7 &
17.4 without Oxygen Delignification (ODL), were bleached in Acidic and Alkaline pH initial chlorine dioxide
(DO) stage, followed by Caustic reinforced Hydrogen peroxide (Ep) and final Chlorine dioxide (D1) stage of
bleaching. At constant bleaching condition both EH2013 pulps show these alkaline pH bleaching methods can
improve the pulp bleachability without affecting pulp strength properties, optical properties, and physical
properties and improved effluent characteristics. The Alkaline pH bleached pulp final brightness 85.7 %ISO
(16% TAA) and 86.5%ISO (17% TAA) are well compared to Acidic pH final brightness 83.4 %ISO (16% TAA)
and 84.4%ISO (17% TAA) initial chlorine dioxide bleaching and followed by extraction reinforced Hydrogen
peroxide and final Chlorine dioxide bleaching. The fiber length, width and curl index of Acidic and Alkaline pH
bleached pulp has not shown any distinct variation, but alkaline pH bleached pulp has shown slightly higher
than Acidic pH bleached Pulp. Both 16&17% TAA cooked pulps filtrate analysis of the Alkaline pH Do stage,
shows lower Colour (14.6 & 15.4%), Total Dissolved Solids (10.7 & 17.9%) and COD (14.2 & 18.0%) than
Acidic pH Do bleaching filtrate. Based on results from the Acidic and Alkaline pH bleaching of EH2013 pulp ,
we found that the optimum pH for initial Do and final D1 chlorine dioxide bleaching stage should be operated
with a final pH close to alkaline, when a typical chlorine dioxide charge is applied and its effluent
characteristics shows lesser inorganic load when compared to acidic effluent .

Acidic and basic are two extremes that describe chemicals, just like hot and cold are two extremes that describe
temperature. Mixing acids and bases can cancel out their extreme effects; much like mixing hot and cold water
can even out the water temperature. A substance that is neither acidic nor basic is neutral. The ph of the water in
betul block is increasing year by year and day by day. It was observed that there are 0.5% increase in the ph of
water in betul block. The optimum pH will vary in different supplies according to the composition of the water
and the nature of the construction materials used in the distribution system, but is often in the range 6.5–9.5.
Extreme pH values can result from accidental spills, treatment breakdowns, and insufficiently cured cement
mortar pipe linings. No health-based guideline value is proposed for pH.
