Race And Ethnicity Research Paper
Ethnic/Cultural Group People are usually categorized in terms of race and/or ethnicity. Race is a term
typically used to classify people according to similar and specific physical characteristics. Ethnicity is
a term more broadly used that connects people according to an inherited status such as: a shared
ancestry, language, history, religion, cuisine, art, clothing style, and/or physical appearance, etc. India
is a country located in South Asia bordered by the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal,
Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. Since India is located in the southern part
of Asia, they racially can identify as Asian; however, Asia as a whole consists of a wide variety of
ethnicities. The U.S. Census Bureau ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those of Asian Indian heritage tended to smell heavily of curry or the food they ate. Also, many of the
women did not shave their armpits or legs. Many cultures around the world do not place as much
emphasis on vanity as Westerners do, so these stereotypes can easily be made. One of the doctors was
from India as well but he was neither smelly, dirty, or sloppy. He did advise many of his Indian
patients the importance of eating a better diet, stating that obesity was becoming a problem in their
culture. One stereotype that I tended to make was that Asians have two left feet and could not walk on
a treadmill. For some reason or another, it seemed to be a trend. Although it wasn t the case for all, it
seemed to be the majority. Before doing this study, I m sure I could have easily mistaken some East
Indians as Chinese. Going from Wheeling, WV to working in a multicultural city was an awesome
experience! Not only did I learn a lot professionally, but I also learned a lot personally. It was very
interesting to meet people of so many different backgrounds with so many different languages, beliefs,
and characteristics.

The Flies Over The Philippines, Indonesia And Much Of The...
Enroute:
Enroute to Darwin the airliner flies over the Philippines, Indonesia and much of the Indian Ocean. The
flight is around 2300 nautical miles (4300km) and in the Airbus A320 travelling at approximately
430kt (800km/hr) it will take five hours and twenty minutes.
ITCZ:
This flight travels straight through the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). This is a belt of low
pressure where the northeast and southeast tradewinds meet, pushing air upwards. It is situated around
the equator but moves seasonally following the suns zenith point. The ITCZ appears as a belt of
clouds, which is responsible for the wet and dry season in the tropics. This area is also known for its
strong convective weather. Any aircrew that is travelling through this region needs to be aware of the
conditions associated with ITCZ and the relative tradewinds as it can jeopardize the safety of the
aircraft.
An active ITCZ has strong tradewinds causing solid lines of active Cumulonimbus (Cb) with other
types of clouds at higher levels. Due to the instability and predominantly vertical movement of air the
cloud development can be extreme with the tops reaching up to 55,000ft and can be some 300nm
wide. At this scale it is hard to avoid the clouds and determining whether the ITCZ is in an active or
inactive stage is hard as they develop and decay reasonably quickly. Not only will there be large cloud
formation but it will also be fairly saturated especially when over oceanic regions. An active ITCZ is

Essay on Transgenic Rice Plants
For centuries, rice has been one of the most important staple crops for the world and it now currently
feeds more than two billion people, mostly living in developing countries. Rice is the major food
source of Japan and China and it enjoys a long history of use in both cultures. In 1994, worldwide rice
production peaked at 530 million metric tons. Yet, more than 200 million tons of rice are lost each
year to biotic stresses such as disease and insect infestation. This extreme loss of crop is estimated to
cost at least several billion dollars per year and heavy losses often leave third world countries
desperate for their staple food.
Therefore, measures must be taken to decrease the amount of crop loss and ... Show more content on

This was useful for delivering the protein inhibitor to insects which eat plant material. The selectable
marker in this trial was the bacterial phosphinothricin acetyl transferase gene (bar) which was linked
to the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter. Next the plasmid pTW was injected into cell
cultures of Japonica rice using the
BiolisticTM particle delivery system. The BiolisticTM system proceeds as follows: Immature
embryos and embryonic calli of six rice materials were bombarded with tungsten particles coated with
DNA of two plasmids containing the appropriate genes. The plant materials showed high frequency of
expression of genes when stained with X Gluc. The number of blue or transgenic units was
approximately 1,000.
After one week, the transgenic cells were transferred onto selection medium containing hygromycin
B. After two weeks, fresh cell cultures could be seen on bombarded tissue. Some cultures were white
and some cultures were blue.
Isolated cell cultures were further selected on hygromycin resistance. However, no control plant
survived.
Then twenty plates of cells were bombarded with the PINII gene, from which over two hundred plants
were regenerated and grown in a greenhouse. After their growth, they were tested for PINII gene using
DNA blot hybridization and 73% of the plants were found to be transgenic.
DNA blot hybridization is the process by which DNA from each sample was digested by a

In 1925, universal male suffrage was introduced, increasing the electorate from 3.3 to 12.5 million.
Yet as the left pushed for further democratic reforms, right wing politicians pushed for legislation to
ban organisations that threatened the state by advocating wealth distribution or political change. This
resulted in 1925 s Peace Preservation Law , which massively curtailed political freedom.
As the left disintegrated, ultra nationalism began to loom large. Japanese nationalism was born at the
end of the nineteenth century. During the Meiji period, industrialisation, centralisation, mass education
and military conscription produced a shift in popular allegiances. Feudal loyalties were replaced by
loyalty to the state, personified by the Emperor.
Why did japan make an alliance with germany
The two fascist powers, both being militarist, were greatly nationalistic and had the ability to annex
other nations. Japan, being discriminated against during the Paris Peace Conference and the
Washington Conference, desired an opportunity to prove its power to the world, and the conquering
was how the nation would accomplish this task. Hitler s Germany centered, more or less, on gaining
control of foreign countries simply so that the nation could turn into a superpower and possess much
power and influence. In other words, both

Comparing Odyssey And The Fellowship Of The Ring
Daniel Blumen
December 2014
E Period Literary Heroes Honors
Both The Odyssey and The Fellowship of the Ring are epics depicting the maturity of one of the heros
in the poem/book. The Odyssey was translated by Robert Fitzgerald and The Fellowship of the Ring
was written by J.R.R Tolkien in 1954. Telemakhos and Frodo must overcome the people that stand in
their way to reach their full potential. Frodo Baggins and Telemakhos both overcome impediments
and by their mentor figures, reach their maturity. The Fellowship of the Ring takes place in a fictional
world named Middle Earth. The title itself tells some aspects of the book. The Ring, a possession of
The Dark Lord Sauron, is used for evil deeds. Sauron placed much of his power in the Ring, and

There are several themes that are in The Fellowship of The Ring, as well as The Odyssey. Some of
these themes were displayed in the previous paragraph. Both epics include hospitality, the hero s
journey, good vs. evil, and several other themes that the heroes must overcome to reach their goals.
The Fellowship of the Ring has really been a great book to read. It entices the reader and immerses
them into the world of Middle Earth. While the book is action packed, it delivers a strong message of
Frodo s best qualities; his persistence, loyalty, and bravery. The Fellowship of the Ring is a book that I
would recommend to everybody I know. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the epic by J.R.R Tolkien and

Segregation In The Other Side By Jacqueline Woodson
Someday somebody s going to come along and knock this old fence down. In class we read, The
Other Side, by Jacqueline Woodson. This is a story about a black girl and a white girl who grew up
during segregation.
In The Other Side, there are a couple of different tones. One tone is ambivalent. The reason one tone is
ambivalent is because they are kids so they most likely have mixed feelings about segregation. They
were raised racist, but do not truly want to be racist. Another tone is kind. Both girls are kind towards
each other even though they are different races.
The symbol in this story is the fence. The fence represents segregation of black and white people. The
story talks about the fence very often. The first sentence of the story

Instructor: Jennifer Smith
Personal Responsibility Leads to Success Even though a person taking on too many responsibilities
can lead to his or her downfall, personal responsibility can lead to success in higher education.
Because responsibility is the force that binds an individual to the course of action demanded by the
goal, personal responsibility can incur beneficial habits and admirable behaviors that will advocate
successful outcome. The state of New York once sought to raise $24 million in donations to give to
poor residents as an incentive to stay in school, stay at work, and stay on track (Traub, 2006). I will be

In this case study 554 students divided into teams in accordance with their performance. Equal parts
high, average, and low performers. The teams engaged in class time, team discussions, and test, over
three semesters with one variance the grading. In semester one, the team received 10 points bonus if
the team raised their final grade by one point. In semester one, they made six points for team
improvement and four points for individual improvement. In semester three, the students collected 10
points, but only if they accomplished both individual, and group improvement. The group would not
collectively receive any points. This study found when high performance students benefited
individually they improved, but when only the group benefited their scores suffered. The high
performance students used their time reviewing material and helping the low performers understand
the material. They lost their own time for review and henceforth their grades suffered.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Personal responsibility is composed of many tools that will allow an individual or team
to succeed. Simply because it is, the force that keeps an individual on course with the end goal, using
these tools will enable inherent success. The practice of setting goals can help one to keep focused on
the task a hand, by knowing what goal a person is working at.

Rosen said in a presentation title Poke Me: How Social Network can both Help and Harm Our Kids.
He said his research found both negative and positive influences linked to social networking.
Rosen s top three potential negative effects of Facebook; 1. Teenager who use Facebook more often

sign of other psychological disorders, including antisocial behaviours, mania, and aggressive
tendencies. 2. Daily over use media and technology has a negative effect on the health of all children,

Catchers Helmet Case Study
Catchers equipment for youth players has two important objectives. First, it needs to offer safe
protection for the catcher. Second, it must fit securely so that the player can do their job. Here are
some examples of excellent options for catchers equipment for youth ages
The Catchers Helmet
Standard catcher masks and skullcaps are no longer permitted in youth leagues. Younger catchers must
wear the full hockey style helmet. When rating helmets you need to consider protection first and
foremost, then visibility and comfort. The Easton M5 QwikFitâ„¢ blends quality with affordability.
The QwikFitâ„¢ design was developed because young catchers always seemed to have trouble
adjusting their catcher helmet. Now the catcher can use the simple click and pull mechanism to ...

The Easton youth design corrected that problem. It adds dual density padding inside a hard shell
helmet for the ultimate helmet. The M5 is finished with a hard steel facemask with an open face
design so the catcher can see.
The Catcher s Chest Protector
Using the same idea behind the helmet, Easton also saw young catchers having problems safely
clipping on their chest protector. Employing a similar quick connect idea, the Easton M5â„¢ chest
protector adds a simple quick clip and an adjustable strap.
Easton added a plate inside the dual foam padding to add additional protection around the collarbone
and in the throat area. Since the chest protector part of catchers equipment for youth players needs to
fit securely, the over the shoulder quick adjustment is one of the most popular features for the smallest
catchers.
Catchers Shin Guards
The lower leg on a catcher can take a beating. It is important that the shin guards remain securely in
place, and have a hard shell backed by padding to deflect the impact. To accomplish this, the guard
needs to have a good strap set up, in addition to full leg

to complain the right way. She explains that being too passive gives the other person a way to step
around the propositions that are being made, while being too aggressive may make the other person
feel persuaded that they should not do as asked. Complaining to the right person, and how to complain

Thirdly, explain what exactly is expected to be done i.e. any repairs, replacements, or refunds.
Ultimately, always add a postscript at the end, stating again what is expected to be changed with the
problem, and if the problem is not solved, what actions will be taken against them. The information
obtained from the story is very reliable since the author s career is solely to teach people how to
protect themselves against poor quality consumer affairs, inefficiency, and dealing with dangerous
products. Caroline s story does not give opinions on the things that she states, in fact, she presents all
the facts on how to be better at complaining that anyone could see it as useful, opinionated or not. The
story is very different from the other two in the sense that it is objective. While What Are Friends For?

How Failure Can Impact A Children s View On Intelligence
Parents and Education: How Failure Can Impact a Children s View on Intelligence
There are a lot of factors that play a role in how a child performs in the educational realm. A major
influencer is the role that a parent plays in their child s education specifically how the parent views
failure. In this article, Parents Views of Failure Predict Children s Fixed and Growth Intelligence Mind
Sets by Kyla Haimovitz and Carol S. Dweck, the question is if a parent s specific response to failure
impacts the child s belief in whether intelligence is malleable or fixed. The article cites research done

The study gathered 100 participants that were in 4th 5th grade, an average age of 11, and over half
female. The participant location was three schools in the San Francisco Area. Parental consent was
given. The questionnaire used to measure the intelligence mindset was identical to the one used in
Study One. They also measured the children s view of how their parent s perceived failure by a two
question survey: my parents think failure can help me learn and my parents think failure is bad and
should be avoided (Haimovitz and Dweck 2016). The results of the study were that the reports done
by the children on their parent s failure mindset predicted their own belief in either a fixed or growth
mindset. Based off of the findings of these three studies, a parent s failure mindset has an effect on a
children s view of intelligence more so than the parent s own view on intelligence. In a failure
debilitating mindset, a child is more than likely to believe that their intelligence, or intelligence in
general, is fixed and cannot be improved. This mindset manifests itself due to several factors that were
studied during the experiment. First the failure mindset of a parent is more visible to the child than
their intelligence mindset. Because of this visibility, a failure debilitating mindset of a parent will have
a greater impact on their child than they

During the French Revolution the National Convention started defacing the French Catholic Church
with the goal to decrease its influence and power. In this effort in doing so, the National Convention
made a new calendar to replace the Gregorian calendar in which they implemented their own ideas
and changed the days, months, and holidays. The French Republican calendar lasted for 12 years and
much opinions and reactions were formed during, and after its creation. Gilbert Rommes argument to

Abbe Sieyes believed that the time wasn t right to make any changes to the Gregorian calendar. For it

Gregorian calendar made its return in 1806 it was appreciated and hated(Document 7). For Napoleon,
the French Republican calendar was a sad and weak decade in which festivals weren t even dedicated

The Keynesian School Of Economic Thought
1) List three key concepts from the Keynesian School of economic thought: (25 points) At least one
concept must describe the management of aggregate demand. a. The primary concept of the Keynesian
School of economic thought revolved around the management of aggregate demand. The author of
this idea, John Maynard Keynes, believed the economy was fundamentally unable to sustain itself at
full employment. One of his proposed solutions to this was for the government to intervene to increase
aggregate demand. He argued that by investing government funds, the amplitude of the business cycle
could be reduced and would stabilize continued economic growth. Another method of managing
aggregate demand involved taxation. By lowering the taxes on certain goods and raising others, the
government could influence public demand for certain products to fluctuate based on its benefit to the
economy as a whole. b. Another concept of Keynesian thought is that of excessive savings. Mr.
Keynes believed that if savings occurred in excess of the planned investment it would increase the
possibility of a recession or depression. He believed that excessive savings were caused by
discouraging business prospects, over investment in previous years, and a decrease in consumer
demand. The law of supply and demand states simply that as savings increased interest rates would
drop, until there was no longer reason to save; this plunging interest rate would bring the economy in
balance once again. Mr. Keynes

Flood In Europe Essay
Floods in Europe
In February 1995 large areas of the mainland countries in Europe were deluged with water, and floods

and Ruhr. The floods were devastation to Europe, killing people and animals, and destroying farmland
and building developments.
If you had lived in Holland at the time you would have been in big trouble. It is a country where 75%

There was too much water, and it came all too quickly. Some of the water was retained by the soil,
some was absorbed by vegetation, and a small percentage evaporated. One may think that the dykes
are sufficiently high to hold the huge amount of water however they couldn t hold the amount that was
produced from the mountains and rainfall. Dykes are made from sand and clay and act like a sponge,
absorbing water. The longer the exposure there is a greater risk that the dyke might collapse. If the
dykes did collapse the land would be submerged under 20 feet of water.

the painted and carved porcelain were mostly nature scenes, but they were also from folklore. Artrists
originaly molded the clay with their hands and set it in the sun to try. Eventualy they began to use a
potter s wheel, and they used a glaze at the same time as the romans.
During the Tang dynasty, Chinese pottery began to develop it s own distict style. They used the first
colored glazes, and underglaze painting. The best pottery came from the time between the Sung
dynasty and the Ming times, when the King hired officials to work in his court strictly as potters.
When these artists made mistakes in their work (cracks or drips), they used the mistakes to create a
picture, such as turning a crack into a tree, or a drip into a teardrop.
Although painting was not China s first form of art, it is probably the most important and dominating
form today. Chinese paintings have always tried to capture philosophy as well as details. 1,400 years
ago, Hsieh Ho, made six basic laws for painting, which artists in China still follow today. They

Poland s Revoked Voting Rights

POLS EU

Poland s Revoked Voting Rights in the European Union The end of the Second World War created an
era of peace for some countries, but for those under the control of the Soviet Union, life became
extremely difficult both socially and politically. Poland was under the direct authority of the USSR
and was subjugated to live with an authoritarian government, whom did not allow political opposition
and freedom. Decades passed until the USSR collapsed and even then Poland faced rigged elections
and remained under a regime that denied political change. The late twentieth century spurred on
opportunity for Poland when the first free election initiated an era of democracy in politics and the
promotion of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This hazard came after the government of Poland had reorganized the voting requirements of the
Constitutional Court and altered the structure of the nation s media outlets. The majority ruling party
within Poland, the Law and Justice Party, also raised moral questions among other EU member states
by establishing new government appointed leaders to the public television and broadcasting agencies.
This new change in judicial processes and media control has led many members of the European
Union to question both the democracy and corruption within the Polish government and to determine
if the new policies have infringed on the EU s values and morals. Therefore, these recent political
fluctuations have lead me to ask what powers does the EU have to influence a member countries
media and court institutions, why has the EU become worried about Poland, and in which ways will
the EU attempt to sanction Poland for their alterations? This research paper will elaborate on Poland s
recent political changes. It will then analyze how Poland s changes have raised controversy with the
European Union and why the EU was concerned. Lastly, the research will demonstrate which
institutions in the EU have jurisdiction over such a conflict, and how the European Union will attempt
to nullify Poland s voting rights within the EU.

Everyone in a community or culture reacts to traumatic events differently. In the United States, 3.6%
of adults (5.2 million people) suffer from PTSD. The estimated amount of American that experience
PTSD at some point is 7.8 million people (PTSD.ne.gov/Nebraska Department of Veterans Affairs,
2007). There is no exact age, gender, background or religion in this disorder; women are likely to
develop PTSD than men in the U.S. In the case of Latinos, they are the largest and fastest growing
minority group in the United States developing the disorder. According to some polls, there is an
estimate that the Hispanics PTSD rate is 27.9% in comparison to the 13.7% PTSD rate among non
Hispanic. Although there have been studies done to conceptualize the factors that made Hispanics
more at risk in the US, there are no concrete results yet (US polls.) Culture plays a role in how people
may deal with PTSD, in some cases; they may see it as dangerous or harmless while others use
different treatments or approaches to this condition. For example, most Latinos are bind by a similar
set of values that has being traditionally passed down from generation to generation, which prevents
them from having some symptoms of PTSD compared to Americans. Latino people do not seek help
from any psychological source. Instead, they prioritize the family needs over their own. Latinos tend
to illustrate confidence when revealing personal and/or emotional problems strictly within a family
setting, rather than confiding in some psychological help, from a psychologist or

Ethical Arguments Against Gmos
It is the year of 2036 and there is a farmer tending to his corn in Belvidere, Illinois. The farmer s name
is William Goldstein and his wife, Mona, calls him inside for supper. William tells his wife that he is
eternally grateful that the pesticide resistant, sweet corn seeds he started using about 20 years ago gave
him a much larger yield and in turn, allowed him to sell more of his corn. Farmer William begins to
cry tears of joy that he was able to turn his originally unsuccessful farm, filled with worm infested,
bitter corn, to a farm stocked with endless bounties of sweet, worm free corn. The old farmer says that
he is glad that Congress overturned the outlaw of GM seeds in the year 2016 because if they had not,

While these are valid concerns, they are entirely wrong. According to the World Health Organization
in 2005, GM foods currently traded on the international market have passed risk assessments in
several countries and are not likely to present risks for human health (Novella). Many of those who
are anti GMO claim that GMOs are not safe because they do not know enough about them or they
have heard far too many conflicting reports. While there are many reports that claim that GMOs are
detrimental to the environment, the three agencies that oversee GM crops, the FDA, USDA, and EDA,
have ruled that these crops do not pose any real threat. Since the beginning of the GM crop in 1996,
there have been 2,497 approvals of the safety of GMOs in the environment and 1,129 of these
approvals have been for the food safety of the products (Monsanto). This further disproves the claim
that GMOs are unsafe for humans and the environment and reassures that there is no risk involved in
either the consumption or the planting of GM

Compare And Contrast Angela s Ashes And The Street
Theme is the subject of talk, a topic, or morals that the author is trying to get across to the readers.
When reading an excerpt, the theme is not directly stated in the text, so you must dig deeper into the
context to understand the morals the author is trying to portray. In both Angela s Ashes and The Street,
we can detect a similar theme of struggling to get through life s obstacles. When reading the two
different stories, we can further pick out the theme by using character, events, and the setting.
In Angela s Ashes, the theme of struggling to get through life s obstacles is shown using character. In
paragraph 4, McCourt writes, You can look in people s windows and see how cozy it is in their
kitchens with fires glowing or ranges black and hot everything bright in the electric light cups and
saucers on the table with plates of sliced bread pounds of butter jars of jam smells of fried eggs... the
mother crisp and clean in her apron everyone washed and the Sacred Heart of Jesus looking down on
them from the wall suffering and sad but still happy with all that food and light and good Catholics at
their breakfast. This quote shows, that the protagonist has been peering into the houses of the rich and
realizes that the rich has everything they want and more. This theme shows that the main character is
jealous of the rich lifestyle because they have more struggles than the rich do. In addition, this theme
is also presented using events. In paragraph 5, In a second I have

Marriage: a fairy tale where every moment leads to happiness and everlasting love. In the article What
s Happening to Marriage? the authors David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead reverse the fairy
tale of marriage. The article conveys a different aspect of marriage that marriage is weakening and
divorce is on the rise. The authors believe men and women of this time have more struggles when
marrying one another than when their parents or grandparents got married. The authors arguments are
well supported, but their use of fallacies outweighs their theories. David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe
Whitehead claim that in today s society marriage is becoming more of a trust issue than previously
thought. They believe marriages have none of these elements: ...an economic bond of mutual
dependency; a social bond supported by the extended family and larger community; and a spiritual
bond upheld by religious doctrine, observance and faith (520). Marriage is becoming more of a
couples relationship and losing meaning in society s culture; therefore, the rate of divorce is increasing
causing people to be cautious of marriage. Popenoe and Whitehead use numerous statistics about
divorce rate; however, they only examine the women s point of view. According to the authors, this is
not the first time marriage has gone to the dumps and recovered causing the authors to delay on
writing marriage s obituary. The authors of the article value a considerable amount of appeals that are

places that provide charts for the amount of confirmed outbreaks and then separates them from human
cases and avian cases. But the best types of reports available are the map tracking ones. Where they
give distinction marks for avian and human cases and all over the different areas of the world. This is
very handy for seeing how bad and large an outbreak is and what species is affected, whether it is
humans or birds. The incidence rate is a measure of morbidity and number of infected worldwide,
looking over the past 10 years. Over the past ten years there have 650 infected.(Yu Chan, 2014). This
is not a large number because of the fact it is not spread through human to human contact but through
already infected poultry. The prevalence rate is the number of current/existing cases worldwide. The
United States has yet to have a confirmed outbreak because we set such high regulations on the meat
we sell in our markets, thus preventing a large outbreak from hitting our country. The mortality rate is
the number of deaths caused by the H5N1 virus worldwide. For

The Transformation Of Odysseus
The man of twists and turns is a fitting name for Odysseus, due to how he reacts and acts upon
situations. Odysseus has his intelligence to thank for all the problems he has found himself in, which
results in him being known for his slyness throughout kingdoms and the heavens. Instead of always
pulling out his sword whenever he gets the chance, he thinks of a strategy and does not always depend
on his strength to get him out of sticky situations. He uses his cleverness to help him escape cyclops ,
gods, and goddesses wraths. Odysseus is known for the use of his intuition instead of his might to
overcome difficult obstacles thrown in his path. Odysseus has many people who dislike him very
much, and that is where he must use his intelligence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Odysseus and his crew settled down inside the cave and waited for the cyclops to return. When he
returns to the cave they plead to him to let them be a guest in his home and tell him that Zeus protects
them, but the cyclops does not fear the gods so he kills two of the crew and keeps the rest as prisoners.
Odysseus and his crew cannot escape because there is a giant boulder they cannot move blocking the
exit of the cave. Odysseus knows that they cannot kill Polyphemus because then they would never be
able to leave because he is the only one who can move the boulder. Odysseus devises a plan to escape
by tricking Polyphemus into getting drunk, and then telling the cyclops that Odysseus name is,
Nobody that s [his] name, (9. 410). Eventually Polyphemus passes out drunk, that is when Odysseus
and his crew blind him. Polyphemus calls out for help so his neighbors come and ask him what
happened and he says, Nobody s killing me now by fraud and not by force! (9. 455). His neighbors
leave because they do not believe that someone is injuring him. Odysseus comes up with a plan to
hide in the wool of Polyphemus s rams and when the cyclops lets the rams out of the cave the crew
will escape and leave the island. This situation shows how intelligent Odysseus truly is, and why he
deserves the title of the man of twists and turns. A hero needs to be a quick thinker and chose the best
times to strike. Odysseus kept a leveled head throughout the whole time while they were in the cave,

College football is tradition, one hundred year rivalries and pregame rituals. While these are all
important aspects of college football, these aren t the conversations the media and student athletes are

about nothing to do with the actual sport. Conversations about how profitable a large school s football

The problem with this is that some college athletes like football players are spending 40 hours a week
practicing with the team, team meetings and other team activities. Athletes also have to travel for
away games which makes the idea of having a job impossible. Between classes, 40 hours of team
activities during the week and weekends spent on the road the athletes have schedule is full (Cooper

young men are laboring under very strict and arduous conditions, so they really are laborers in terms
of the physical demands on them while they re also trying to go to school and being required to go to
school. (Cooper ). Also if an athlete has a quiz the same day as practice the athlete has to miss the quiz
and take it another time. A lot of athletes are afraid that their hectic schedule will negatively affect
their grades so a lot time they take easy classes that don t require a lot of work. I also believe that if
college athletes were paid then it would incentivize them to finish their degrees most of the top college
basketball players go to school for one year and enter the NBA draft. A lot of students can t afford to

Globalization By Arthur Macewan
Perhaps a cliché to mention, but an important aspect of human life which has brought the entire race to
where it stands today, is the very act and ability to communicate with each other; and finally in the
19th century, this ability to communicate culminated to that process of ultimate human integration
which is known as globalization . Although the 19th century is considered as the beginning of the kind
of globalization that describes the modern world today, the process is believed to have begun during
the times of great voyages and discoveries. Arthur Macewan in his essay What is Globalization (2001)
wrote, Ever since Adam and Eve left the garden, people have been expanding the geographic realm of
their economic, political, social and cultural contacts. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also, as a process of change that can embody both great opportunities of wealth and progress and
great trauma and suffering, globalization at the beginning of the 21st century is following a well
established historical path. Macewan further sketches a path of the process of globalization and says
that there are two very important surges of globalization in the modern era the first surge that can be
said to be the mark of the pronouncement of the modern era, came with the invasion of the continent
of Africa and Asia by the European powers; and the second surge took place in the 19th century both
as a product and cause of Industrial Revolution. Thus, this new socio economic political trend that
took over the world in the 19th century was however, not contended to the socio economic political
front only. Globalization as a global force influenced academic practices as well; also the various
disciplines of humanities started pondering more and more on the nature of globalization and the
influences that it have (and can further have) on all the aspects of human life and

How Does Kromer Influence In Demian
The Foundation Of Childhood Life can be described as a skyscraper. When childhood morality builds
a strong foundation, one can reach great heights. However, when built with a weak, unstable
foundation, life s obstacles undermine the building, causing it to crumble to the ground. In the novel,
Demian, Hermann Hesse pursues the idea of how external influence from Emil Sinclair s peers, during
his childhood lead to his heretic belief in Abraxas. Through encounters with Kromer and Demian,
Sinclair s ethical spectrum shifts to the darker side of life, which he never confronts before, due to his
parents upbringing. Sinclair s abusive relationship with Kromer catalyzes his metamorphosis from
virtuous to villainous. Weak and vulnerable, he let[s] the devil take the hindmost (16). The devil

Finding True Freedom in The Awakening
Kate Chopin s novel, The Awakening details the endeavors of heroine Edna Pontellier to cope with the
realization that she is not, nor can she ever be, the woman she wants to be. Edna has settled for less.
She is married for all the wrong reasons, saddled with the burden of motherhood, and trapped by
social roles that would never release her. The passage below is only one of the many tender and
exquisitely sensory passages that reveal Edna s soul to the reader.
The voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, dancing, murmuring, inviting the soul to

She would sometimes gather them passionately to her heart; she would sometimes forget them (37).
There is nothing wrong with lacking the maternal instincts that Edna does. What is wrong is living in a
society that makes you feel guilty for not bearing litter after litter, and then fussing about them until
your dying day. Thus, Edna endures her thoughts in secret shame: Their absence was a relief, though
she did not admit this, even to herself. It seemed to free her of a responsibility which she had blindly
assumed and for which Fate had not fitted her (37). Mrs. Pontellier was not meant to be some
matronly icon. This situation is a prime example of the life she did not voluntarily choose, but was
forced to live. Edna was, in truth, no less of a woman for her instincts (or lack thereof). She only had
the misfortune of living at a time when such choices were unacceptable, when women were still
judged by the softness of their bread and the size of their brood.
In addition, Edna had more or less stumbled into her marriage, which was purely an accident (36). She
did it to spite her parents, because Leonce worshipped her (37), and because she realized that no trace
of passion or excessive and fictitious warmth colored her affection, thereby threatening its dissolution
(37). While this is practical and realistic, it sounds remarkably unlike a marriage out of love; a
marriage that would fulfill her desires.

Summary Of In Cold Blood By Truman Capote
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote Entry #1: Speaker
Truman Capote is described in the biography section of the book as being born in 1924 in New
Orleans. He, over his lifetime, wrote a variety of works from short stories to memoirs. In the
acknowledgments, he says that the information presented in the book is taken from official records or
is the result of interviews. He then goes on to mention some of the important people to help make the
book happen like the members of Finney County, the place where the event happened, and notable
members of institutions like Kansas State University and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Capote
did not find any of the information first hand, nor is he from the state in which the crime occurred. He
simply wrote a clear account of what happened by using interviews and police notes after the fact.
Truman Capote s relationship to the topic was simply that he volunteered to be the voice of a case that
otherwise might not have been heard throughout the country and around the world in full detail and
for years to come.
Throughout the book, Capote establishes himself as a qualified and trustworthy writer through his use
of ethos, or credibility. He shows the degree of precision and accuracy of his facts by mentioning
highly trusted individuals and organizations. For example, he says while describing Alvin Dewey, the
head of the case for the state as being a former sheriff of Finney County and F.B.I. Special Agent.

He proclaimed a jubilee year, in which thousands of pilgrims came to Rome, leaving massive amounts
of money behind. Then the papacy began to unravel; Pope Boniface VIII excommunicated Philip IV,
King of France, who in turn kidnapped the Pope and held him hostage. As a result of his captivity,
Pope Boniface VIII died miserably. His successor, Benedict XI, lived for only a short while, and after
his death the papal election was deadlocked. The College of the Cardinals finally elected Clement V, a

United Airlines And Merger With Continental Airlines Essay
ABSTRACT
UAL Corp. s United Airlines announced merger with Continental Airlines Inc. on May 3, 2010 and
became the world s largest airline. This $3 billion merger between the two airline companies lifted the
beigest regulatory hurdle ever in the international aviation sector. In this paper, I will review through
the timeline that covers from the announcement of the merger to the completion with major milestones
noted and what role the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) was playing in this merger.
TIMELINE
June 2008: CEOs of both United Airlines and Continental Airlines signed and alliance pact. The
alliance is an agreement to link international networks and share technology and passenger perks. This
agreement is basically a virtual merger that includes many of the benefits of a merger without the
actual costs and restructuring involved. The alliance took effect about a year after Delta Air Lines and
Northwest Airlines completed their merger, as that released Continental from the SkyTeam contract
and allowed for the required nine month notice. Additionally, Continental joined the Star Alliance, as
Delta and Northwest merged.
April 2010: United Airlines was reported to be in serious merger discussion with US Airways.
May 2, 2010: The board of Directors at Continental and United Airlines approved a stock swap deal
that would combine them into the world s largest airline. Both airlines have taken losses in the
recession and expect the merger to generate savings of more than $1

The Search For Dominance By Victor Frankenstein
The search for dominance is always evident in the story of Frankenstein, the story even begins with
Victor Frankenstein in the search for strength. Everyone in the story has some kind of moxie that they
can use over the other characters, but the desire for power takes everyone on a different path. Any time
in the story when Victor Frankenstein needs to find and regain himself he looks to nature to find it all.
Nature holds a great part of the power that happens in the story, but the creature is also filled with the
crave for prestige as well as Victor. Authority controls the actions of all the characters in the play
whether or not they realize it. In the story whenever Victor feels like he needs to find himself and gain
control of himself he goes out into the nature to find motivation inside himself. Victor has a knack for
using the nature to his advantage, he uses it to find himself while in the wild, but he also uses it to
create the creature. His drive for success became so great that he went to make a creature that would
make him very influential in the scientific world once he proved that he could create life with his bare
hands. Victor was successful in creating the creature, but once he had created the creature he was
disgusted with his creation and all his work became an eminent failure. He then proceeded to abandon
the creature because of how hideous it appeared. Little did Victor know that when he abandoned the

The Influence Of Activism
This class has taught me how to engage in strategic lifelong activism. Activism is an umbrella term
referring to the promoting or campaigning of policy or social change on the cultural, structural, or

Buddha, Thoreau, and Dr. Martin Luther King (MLK). Thanks to these people over the years activism
has developed a clear and effective structure which has proven effective in history and a number of
cultures. In order to engage in effective lifelong activist one must be able to conceptualize social

This was done through a series of steps. The first step was to learn how to conceptualize social justice.
Understanding social justice is more than just knowing statistics, social justice requires one to identify
with others stories, develop a sense of motivation, and knowing barriers one will face in one s journey.
The next thing important to my own journey as a white male was understanding how oppression
affects the motivation of an individual. To me, this meant breaking oppression down into non
experiential and first hand experiences. Next was developing an activism cycle this meant learning
how to recognize the need for change, joining an organization, taking action and following up by
learning what one can do better in the future. Lastly, I learned how to make my action as purposeful
and as meaningful as possible. Developing the skills and practices to be effective in lifelong advocacy

The Bardo Thobins And The Tibetan Book Of The Dead
The Coen Brothers film Miller s Crossing and William Kennedy s novel Legs revolve around the

Naked Mind and The Catholic Missal cohabits with The Tibetan Book of the Dead, flanked by a score
of volumes on Joyce (Suplee 2). The Tibetan Book of the Dead, also known as the Bardo Thodol,
expresses Buddhist teachings on death, rebirth, and the state of pause between the two. Along with
Campbell s work, the Bardo Thodol gives readers the ability to analyze both Legs and Miller s

inform readers of the importance of introspection and humility. In a more menacing way, gang
narratives follow the model of the Bardo Thodol because the sinister underworld allows for pause
between life and death.
Tom and Marcus live out and display the intellectual honesty which Campbell and the Bardo Thodol
praise. In order for the hero to change his life and the world for the better, he must self reflect and
accept the call to adventure. The Book of the Dead, which Kennedy openly admires, offers intimate
advice for the personal hero s journey. What happens in death is that there is a gap or

The Merchant Of Death Story Arc
The Merchant of Death story arc continues to mirror that of the one developed by George Lucas.
While the entirety of Episode IV: A New Hope could be categorized as a completion of Hero s
Journey, to better understand Luke Skywalker s transition from farm boy to Jedi Knight, all the
sequels of the Star Wars saga can be explored to create a more unified representation. In Episode V:
The Empire Strikes Back, Luke is deployed on the barren planet Hoth serving the Rebel Alliance
when he is called on by Ben Kenobi s spirit; he instructs Skywalker to travel to the Dagobah system to
complete his Jedi training. Amidst a Rebel retreat after an attack from the Galactic Empire, Luke
travels to his intended star system with the goal in mind of finding another master. Eventually, crash
landing in the swamp ridden planet of Dagobah, Luke encounters a seemingly meager creature who
pesters him to the point of frustration, only to find out the individual was Jedi Master Yoda. After
consulting the protagonist s former instructor, Yoda dismissively accepts Luke as his padawan learner.
Though Luke had received training from Obi Wan, his knowledge, and training in the use of Force
was limited, therefor constraining full potential. Even with the guidance from a Master Jedi, he
continuously failed his master s obscure tests, which can be attributed to Luke s lack of faith in
himself. This mentality facilitated his uncertainty and frustration to the point where even Yoda had
doubts on his legitimacy

Critical Issues in Managing Information Systems in...
Instant Messaging Systems
Instant Messaging is a widely available communication medium and due to popularity and
productivity increase its use has become popular in the workplace. Although this is a major benefit
through increased collaborative working there are many issues and problems that have to be addressed
in order to realise the ‘creative and positive effects .
The use of Instant Messaging (IM) systems in the workplace has brought with it new legal and
security issues that need to be considered. Industry analysts estimate that unauthorised IM use in the
workplace is between 75% and 90%. This indicates that nearly everyone using IM in any given
organisation is doing so without the manager s knowledge. This shows there are ... Show more content

Introducing an IM system at British Airways will have a positive, creative effect, and its use should be
encouraged. The first thing to do though is to carry out a survey of the employees about their IM use.
The survey should be designed to answer the following questions:
§ Who is using an IM system at work?
§ What systems are employees using?
§ Where did employees get the software?
§ How often is IM being used?
§ Under what circumstances are employees using IM?
§ Who are they talking to?
§ What is the content of the conversations?
§ Are files being sent and received, if so what types of files?
The results of an employee survey like this will show the management how widespread the IM use
currently is. The results will help to produce rules and policies for IM use, as well as aiding the
development of training programs.
Security
IM s popularity has been aided by the fact that it is so accessible. The majority of workplace PC s now
have Internet access. IM software can easily be found using Internet Explorer. The software is free,
easy to install and easy to use. Allowing employees to use an IM system, and providing a system for
them will eliminate the risks of employees searching the Internet and downloading software from
potentially unsafe sources. Employees computers could be configured so that downloading this type of

Semiotics in Art History
The Oxford English Dictionary defines semiotics as [the] science of communication studied through
interpretation of signs and symbols as they operate in various fields, especially language. Semiology is
characterized as the science of signs which studies the life of signs within society. Signs include,
among others, sounds, images, words, odors, objects; they are concepts that stand for something else
in a system of signification. They allow us to communicate a concept or an idea while it is physically
absent. In art history, the simplest description of semiology consists of the translation of an image into
words. Two prominent founders of the contemporary sign theories are Peirce and Saussure. Although
they focus on the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This idea is intrinsically related to the concepts of the sender and the viewer, which will be discussed
in the next sections of this paper. The second issue discussed by the art historians is the sender of a
work. In this section, Bal and Bryson define and differentiate the composition of the artist of a work.
First, there is the concept of the sender as an individual, or J. Bloggs, as they call him. J. Bloggs
stands for the name of the individual, a designation, not a description;[...] it does not assign any
particular characteristics to its bearer (p.181). The second aspect of the sender is the author, which is
in the works, in a body of artifacts and in the complex operations performed on them (p.181). It is the
notions of enframement that distinguishes J.Bloggs from the author, which is what Bal and Bryson
identify as an elaborate work of framing, something we can elaborately produce rather than something
we simply find (p. 181). The art historian, Culler, explains that authorship is given, not produced, as
he states that what counts as authorship is determined by interpretative strategies (p.181). Thus, in
simpler terms, the author or artist could be produced in the sense that his attributed works and other
interpretable material, and ultimately produce a conception. Attributions are said to be evidenced
through material traces of the author in the work,

Why Women Should Not Be Sexualized And Objectified The Way...
David Dale 1 Why women should not be sexualized and objectified the way they are in video games
today: Most of us would already know that women s representation in the media is highly sexualized
and that women are regularly portrayed in a sexual manner and are objectified in all forms of media
whether it be in magazines, online, television, movies, music videos, and of course video games (Wu,
2014). Many people derive gratification from what they read and hear every day without thinking
about the way that women are being portrayed in these forms of media. Women are regularly used as
an object to sell a game or used as eye candy to advertise and sell a product. The way that women in
today s society are objectified and sexualized in media especially video games can lead to later
unsocial behaviour by the participant and that s not a positive or desirable result for society. Video
games have long been known as a male dominated media, when it comes to the market audience,
player base, and character representation in game. Research concerning gender representation in video
games often focuses on a few key points of how men and women are viewed differently, things like
physical abilities, role in the game, and physical attributes are just a few to point out (Zorrilla, 2011).
Something that is used a lot in video games is the sexualized depiction of female characters, the
overwhelming masculinity of the implied game player, and the recurring structure of male heroes or
characters

Articles Of Confederation Vs US Constitution
The idea of state government came from the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation
were the first type of government the US had, and they were based on the state s powers. Soon, the
Framers of the US saw that the Articles of Confederation were not working, and each state was like it
s own country. The Framers met at the Constitutional Convention, and there were two sides as to how
the US Constitution should be written. The Federalists wanted a strong Central government, but the
Anti Federalists wanted a government that gave the power to the states. There was a compromise
made, and a central government was created, but also the states were given their own government.
There are many similarities between the two governments, but ... Show more content on

The state government system is the bottom, the foundation of United States. Then, it moves up into
the federal government which is at the top of the power chain. This whole concept shows that the state
and federal government must have some the same policies and systems to work together, the way it
does. Although, It must be somewhat different, otherwise a compromise would have never been made
at the Constitutional Convention. Overall, this shows that the United States government gets all of its
power from the citizens of the United States of

Essays On Siddhartha
Daniel Gutierrez Honors English 4 Mr. Rodriguez 08/30/17 Siddhartha That was how everyone loved
Siddhartha. He delighted and made everybody happy. But Siddhartha was not happy. (Page 6) This is
a great example of perception vs. reality as everyone makes it seem that one person might be happy,
but inside they can be at the complete opposite state. This causes him to have the desire for more
wisdom than what he has been taught. He wanted to find out what was really important and wanted to
feel no emotion in regards to what people think of him. What is concentration? What is the ability to
leave one s body? What is fasting? What is retention of breath? It is a flight from the self, it is a brief
escape from the torment of being I , it is a brief numbing of the mind to counter pain and the
senselessness of life. (Page 9) Siddhartha is saying. that the practices of the samana are just a way of
leaving life and its problems temporarily by making their bodies undergo these hardships. They
eventually become numb with the pain and by doing so, the samana are able to leave their worries of
the real world temporarily. Yes, he thought breather deeply, I will no longer try to escape from
Siddhartha. I will learn from myself, be my own pupil; I will learn from myself the secret of
Siddhartha. (Page 32) Here Siddhartha is demonstrating that he is the only one that matters when it
comes to thoughts of who he is, and only his opinion of himself matters. Acceptance and the ability to
look into himself will lead to that road of happiness. Also, to be minimalistic as to if there is nothing
to be needed then it is not. This is something many people should take into consideration as to stay
away from being materialistic. He looked around him as if seeing the world for the first time. The
world was beautiful, strange, and mysterious. (page 39) Siddhartha Govinda left to join the Samanas
to set themselves free for enlightenment. The Samanas put out the idea that you must eliminate the
self so one can achieve spiritual fulfillment one day. Now he, too, felt belatedly for once in his life that
strongest and strangest of passions; he suffered from it, suffered pitifully, and yet he was blessed, and
yet he was in

Nursing Observation Report
In every organization there is always room for change. Interning at Queens Endoscopy Center has
shown me that. The first few weeks interning I noticed there could be more signs up for directions.
The endoscopy center is located in a building with many floors and this center is on the 3rd floor.
Once patients get out the elevator there is no sign on which direction to turn to get to the front desk.
There is just one door leading to another. I would like to put up more arrows and signs to guide the
patient in the directions to go to. If I were to get lost by not knowing where to go, I felt others would
as well. Another change that I would like to partake in would be the communication between the front
desk staff and the nurses. There is a lot of confusion that occurs in this ... Show more content on

I would like for them to make sure this does not happen often since it leaves patients being unhappy.
In order to fix this there can be more staff just making sure the system is updated since there are
different physicians as well as many patients assigned to each of these doctors. Lastly, id likes to
eliminate some of the paper work still. I know it is hard to get rid of paper but I feel that loads of
paper is being wasted here. I notice that a lot of elderly people come to this center and have not been
up to date with technology and this is where the paper work comes in. I would like to promote the
access of patients to there own health record online. If they want to see the pictures they can have
access rather then it all being printed. It is not hard for an elderly or any other patient to use this
patient management system on his or her own. Overall, patients getting lost to just finding this center
get them frustrated just the start of their visit and no one would want that. That is why I figured
change could be done

Comparing Marie Antoinette And Her Children And Destitute...
Mothers love and care The two images, Marie Antoinette and her Children by Vigee Lebrun and
Destitute Pea Pickers in California by Dorothea Lange, show the obvious differences in the
appearances of characters, color, and background. In fact, the similarity of the two images makes it
easy for the viewers to see the differences and to compare and contrast. While the images are both
show the living conditions of the family of four, Marie Antoinette s image shows a great wealthy life
with the joys expressed in the mother s face while the Migrant mother s image shows a destitute life of
a migrant family with a mother s worry face. Lebrun s painting shares the mother s happiness when
her family is having a prosperous life while Lange s photo reveals the anxieties of a mother when her
children are having a hard life. The obvious difference in color tones creates the mood within the
images at the first time I saw it. Lange s photograph is in black and white create the feelings of
depression and misery. It symbolizes the fearfulness and sadness. In contrast, Lebrun used vibrant
colors such as red and orange to create the feelings of happiness and satisfaction. Instead of creating a
strong pessimism feeling as Lange s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

feelings of the viewers toward the characters in the photo. Their poverty makes me feel pity and sorry

background is totally opposite to Lange s photo background. The setting was taken in a nice palace
with necessary furniture shows a prosperous life. Even though the background isn t a palace but
instead in a fancy room, still we can recognize it is in a palace. Lebrun s painting shares a warm

Breakfast of Champions as Social Commentary Essay
Matthew Choma
English 101
Prof. J. Douglas
4/9/11
Breakfast of Champions: Science Fiction as Social Commentary
Vonnegut s symbolic and satirical representation of humans as robots in his novel: Breakfast of
Champions is representative of the authors interpretation of world events and conflicting nature of
human beings. The renowned author often hits on significant and worrisome themes such as
destruction of the planet and overpopulation. His unique and unparallel style includes outrageous and
often unrealistic chain of event that are obviously symbolic and relevant to the story as well as the
author s attitude on a particular subject matter. For instance in describing when Kilgore Trout writes
his stories, he does not save them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We are introduced into the story as outsiders almost, as if we did not belong to the planet, as if we
were not human. This kind of insight creates a whole different kind of attitude on the events that are
happening within. Science fiction, theoretically attempts to do just that. To make the ordinary seem
strange, in order to provide critique to a specific subject matter in order to let the reader rethink his or
her own attitude on the matter at hand. Certainly this is that case here as well. Having this third party
perspective allows for us to rethink our entire attitudes on relevant social and secular issues
dominating at the time. For instance such a moment that sticks out is the description of women s
underwear. And the madness about wide open beavers was extended to underpants when Dwayne and
Trout and I were boys. Girls concealed their underpants at all costs, and boys tried to see their
underpants at all coasts (Vonnegut, 27). Below the paragraph is a picture of the very underpants he
spoke of that portrays, literary, a critique of how insignificant and unworthy the massive social
outbursts on debates were on nude or nearly nude depictions of women in popular magazines when
compared to other issues that plagued the world.
One passage sticks out in particular when it comes to issues that Vonnegut considers relevant: The
Creator of the Universe would like to apologize not only for the capricious,

Dudley Randall s Ballad Of Birmingham
Dudley Randall s Ballad of Birmingham is a powerful poem that is very effective at speaking to the
readers. One reason I found as to why Ballad of Birmingham does so well at provoking the reader s
emotions is the way the author uses irony in the poem. In the poem, a little girl asks, Mother dear, may
I go downtown / Instead of out to play, / And march the streets of Birmingham / In a Freedom March
today? (Randall 1 4). The little girl is asking her mother if she can participate in a children s Freedom
March in Birmingham, Alabama during the Civil Rights movement. After begging her mother some
more, her mother eventually replies, No, baby, no, you may not go, / For I fear those guns will fire. /
But you may go to church instead / And sing in the children s choir (13 16). ... Show more content on

The mother assumes, as most people would assume, that the church is a safer place for her child than
the Freedom March, which was sometimes disbanded through police brutality. However, in this one
instance, anywhere would have been safer for the child to be than the church. The church, which was
assumed safe by the mother was actually a very dangerous place for the child to be on that day
because it was to be bombed as an act of racial terrorism. In this poem, the church is an example of
irony because it was exactly opposite of what it was expected to be. Dudley Randall uses the irony of
the church as a way to further increase the reader s understanding of how heinous a crime the bombing
of the church

Overview As our venture capital firm prepares to take the plunge into global investment, it is vital that
we understand all the forces at work. In the book No Ordinary Disruption by Richard Dobbs, James

our business and leadership. This executive summary examines the fourth force of, Greater Global
Connections specifically focusing on Chapter 4, Trade, People, Finance and Data. As Dobbs, Manyika
and Woetzel walk us through their theory and evidence, it is clear that their analysis is well founded
and appropriate. Greater Global Connections Trade in Goods and Services o Trade today is not just
located in North America and Western Europe; trade is now a complex web that includes Asia, Latin
America and Africa. o South to South trade, meaning trade between developing countries, accounts for
40 percent of all goods flow. The expansion of trade into these new regions is by reason of
technological advances and economic growth and increasing numbers of consumers. o Companies of
all sizes and kind can now participate in trade, for instance trade is no longer just about manufacturing
clothing but robotics and other more advance goods. Finance o Money is the new commodity because

  • 2. Race And Ethnicity Research Paper Ethnic/Cultural Group People are usually categorized in terms of race and/or ethnicity. Race is a term typically used to classify people according to similar and specific physical characteristics. Ethnicity is a term more broadly used that connects people according to an inherited status such as: a shared ancestry, language, history, religion, cuisine, art, clothing style, and/or physical appearance, etc. India is a country located in South Asia bordered by the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Pakistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. Since India is located in the southern part of Asia, they racially can identify as Asian; however, Asia as a whole consists of a wide variety of ethnicities. The U.S. Census Bureau ... Many cultures around the world do not place as much emphasis on vanity as Westerners do, so these stereotypes can easily be made. One of the doctors was from India as well but he was neither smelly, dirty, or sloppy. He did advise many of his Indian patients the importance of eating a better diet, stating that obesity was becoming a problem in their culture. One stereotype that I tended to make was that Asians have two left feet and could not walk on a treadmill. For some reason or another, it seemed to be a trend. Although it wasn t the case for all, it seemed to be the majority. Before doing this study, I m sure I could have easily mistaken some East Indians as Chinese. Going from Wheeling, WV to working in a multicultural city was an awesome experience! Not only did I learn a lot professionally, but I also learned a lot personally. It was very interesting to meet people of so many different backgrounds with so many different languages, beliefs, and characteristics. • 3. The Flies Over The Philippines, Indonesia And Much Of The... Enroute: Enroute to Darwin the airliner flies over the Philippines, Indonesia and much of the Indian Ocean. The flight is around 2300 nautical miles (4300km) and in the Airbus A320 travelling at approximately 430kt (800km/hr) it will take five hours and twenty minutes. ITCZ: This flight travels straight through the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). This is a belt of low pressure where the northeast and southeast tradewinds meet, pushing air upwards. It is situated around the equator but moves seasonally following the suns zenith point. The ITCZ appears as a belt of clouds, which is responsible for the wet and dry season in the tropics. This area is also known for its strong convective weather. Any aircrew that is travelling through this region needs to be aware of the conditions associated with ITCZ and the relative tradewinds as it can jeopardize the safety of the aircraft. An active ITCZ has strong tradewinds causing solid lines of active Cumulonimbus (Cb) with other types of clouds at higher levels. Due to the instability and predominantly vertical movement of air the cloud development can be extreme with the tops reaching up to 55,000ft and can be some 300nm wide. At this scale it is hard to avoid the clouds and determining whether the ITCZ is in an active or inactive stage is hard as they develop and decay reasonably quickly. Not only will there be large cloud formation but it will also be fairly saturated especially when over oceanic regions. An active ITCZ is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay on Transgenic Rice Plants For centuries, rice has been one of the most important staple crops for the world and it now currently feeds more than two billion people, mostly living in developing countries. Rice is the major food source of Japan and China and it enjoys a long history of use in both cultures. In 1994, worldwide rice production peaked at 530 million metric tons. Yet, more than 200 million tons of rice are lost each year to biotic stresses such as disease and insect infestation. This extreme loss of crop is estimated to cost at least several billion dollars per year and heavy losses often leave third world countries desperate for their staple food. Therefore, measures must be taken to decrease the amount of crop loss and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was useful for delivering the protein inhibitor to insects which eat plant material. The selectable marker in this trial was the bacterial phosphinothricin acetyl transferase gene (bar) which was linked to the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter. Next the plasmid pTW was injected into cell cultures of Japonica rice using the BiolisticTM particle delivery system. The BiolisticTM system proceeds as follows: Immature embryos and embryonic calli of six rice materials were bombarded with tungsten particles coated with DNA of two plasmids containing the appropriate genes. The plant materials showed high frequency of expression of genes when stained with X Gluc. The number of blue or transgenic units was approximately 1,000. After one week, the transgenic cells were transferred onto selection medium containing hygromycin B. After two weeks, fresh cell cultures could be seen on bombarded tissue. Some cultures were white and some cultures were blue. Isolated cell cultures were further selected on hygromycin resistance. However, no control plant survived. Then twenty plates of cells were bombarded with the PINII gene, from which over two hundred plants were regenerated and grown in a greenhouse. After their growth, they were tested for PINII gene using DNA blot hybridization and 73% of the plants were found to be transgenic. DNA blot hybridization is the process by which DNA from each sample was digested by a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1925, universal male suffrage was introduced, increasing the electorate from 3.3 to 12.5 million. Yet as the left pushed for further democratic reforms, right wing politicians pushed for legislation to ban organisations that threatened the state by advocating wealth distribution or political change. This resulted in 1925 s Peace Preservation Law , which massively curtailed political freedom. As the left disintegrated, ultra nationalism began to loom large. Japanese nationalism was born at the end of the nineteenth century. During the Meiji period, industrialisation, centralisation, mass education and military conscription produced a shift in popular allegiances. Feudal loyalties were replaced by loyalty to the state, personified by the Emperor. Why did japan make an alliance with germany The two fascist powers, both being militarist, were greatly nationalistic and had the ability to annex other nations. Japan, being discriminated against during the Paris Peace Conference and the Washington Conference, desired an opportunity to prove its power to the world, and the conquering was how the nation would accomplish this task. Hitler s Germany centered, more or less, on gaining control of foreign countries simply so that the nation could turn into a superpower and possess much power and influence. In other words, both ... Comparing Odyssey And The Fellowship Of The Ring Daniel Blumen December 2014 E Period Literary Heroes Honors Both The Odyssey and The Fellowship of the Ring are epics depicting the maturity of one of the heros in the poem/book. The Odyssey was translated by Robert Fitzgerald and The Fellowship of the Ring was written by J.R.R Tolkien in 1954. Telemakhos and Frodo must overcome the people that stand in their way to reach their full potential. Frodo Baggins and Telemakhos both overcome impediments and by their mentor figures, reach their maturity. The Fellowship of the Ring takes place in a fictional world named Middle Earth. Both epics include hospitality, the hero s journey, good vs. evil, and several other themes that the heroes must overcome to reach their goals. The Fellowship of the Ring has really been a great book to read. It entices the reader and immerses them into the world of Middle Earth. While the book is action packed, it delivers a strong message of Frodo s best qualities; his persistence, loyalty, and bravery. The Fellowship of the Ring is a book that I would recommend to everybody I know. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the epic by J.R.R Tolkien and am excited to read the sequel next ... This is a story about a black girl and a white girl who grew up during segregation. In The Other Side, there are a couple of different tones. One tone is ambivalent. The reason one tone is ambivalent is because they are kids so they most likely have mixed feelings about segregation. They were raised racist, but do not truly want to be racist. Another tone is kind. Both girls are kind towards each other even though they are different races. The symbol in this story is the fence. The fence represents segregation of black and white people. Personal Responsibility Leads To Success Case Study Samuel Cedeno Gen/200 August 27, 2012 Instructor: Jennifer Smith Personal Responsibility Leads to Success Even though a person taking on too many responsibilities can lead to his or her downfall, personal responsibility can lead to success in higher education. Because responsibility is the force that binds an individual to the course of action demanded by the goal, personal responsibility can incur beneficial habits and admirable behaviors that will advocate successful outcome. The teams engaged in class time, team discussions, and test, over three semesters with one variance the grading. In semester one, the team received 10 points bonus if the team raised their final grade by one point. In semester one, they made six points for team improvement and four points for individual improvement. In semester three, the students collected 10 points, but only if they accomplished both individual, and group improvement. The group would not collectively receive any points. This study found when high performance students benefited individually they improved, but when only the group benefited their scores suffered. The high performance students used their time reviewing material and helping the low performers understand the material. They lost their own time for review and henceforth their grades suffered. Conclusion In conclusion, Personal responsibility is composed of many tools that will allow an individual or team to succeed. Simply because it is, the force that keeps an individual on course with the end goal, using these tools will enable inherent success. The practice of setting goals can help one to keep focused on the task a hand, by knowing what goal a person is working at. Second, it must fit securely so that the player can do their job. Here are some examples of excellent options for catchers equipment for youth ages The Catchers Helmet Standard catcher masks and skullcaps are no longer permitted in youth leagues. Younger catchers must wear the full hockey style helmet. When rating helmets you need to consider protection first and foremost, then visibility and comfort. Employing a similar quick connect idea, the Easton M5â„¢ chest protector adds a simple quick clip and an adjustable strap. Easton added a plate inside the dual foam padding to add additional protection around the collarbone and in the throat area. The information obtained from the story is very reliable since the author s career is solely to teach people how to protect themselves against poor quality consumer affairs, inefficiency, and dealing with dangerous products. Caroline s story does not give opinions on the things that she states, in fact, she presents all the facts on how to be better at complaining that anyone could see it as useful, opinionated or not. How Failure Can Impact A Children s View On Intelligence Parents and Education: How Failure Can Impact a Children s View on Intelligence There are a lot of factors that play a role in how a child performs in the educational realm. A major influencer is the role that a parent plays in their child s education specifically how the parent views failure. In this article, Parents Views of Failure Predict Children s Fixed and Growth Intelligence Mind Sets by Kyla Haimovitz and Carol S. The participant location was three schools in the San Francisco Area. Parental consent was given. They also measured the children s view of how their parent s perceived failure by a two question survey: my parents think failure can help me learn and my parents think failure is bad and should be avoided (Haimovitz and Dweck 2016). The results of the study were that the reports done by the children on their parent s failure mindset predicted their own belief in either a fixed or growth mindset. Based off of the findings of these three studies, a parent s failure mindset has an effect on a children s view of intelligence more so than the parent s own view on intelligence. In a failure debilitating mindset, a child is more than likely to believe that their intelligence, or intelligence in general, is fixed and cannot be improved. This mindset manifests itself due to several factors that were studied during the experiment. First the failure mindset of a parent is more visible to the child than their intelligence mindset. In this effort in doing so, the National Convention made a new calendar to replace the Gregorian calendar in which they implemented their own ideas and changed the days, months, and holidays. The French Republican calendar lasted for 12 years and much opinions and reactions were formed during, and after its creation. When the Gregorian calendar made its return in 1806 it was appreciated and hated(Document 7). For Napoleon, the French Republican calendar was a sad and weak decade in which festivals weren t even dedicated to the to the charity. • 16. The Keynesian School Of Economic Thought 1) List three key concepts from the Keynesian School of economic thought: (25 points) At least one concept must describe the management of aggregate demand. a. The primary concept of the Keynesian School of economic thought revolved around the management of aggregate demand. The author of this idea, John Maynard Keynes, believed the economy was fundamentally unable to sustain itself at full employment. One of his proposed solutions to this was for the government to intervene to increase aggregate demand. He argued that by investing government funds, the amplitude of the business cycle could be reduced and would stabilize continued economic growth. Another method of managing aggregate demand involved taxation. By lowering the taxes on certain goods and raising others, the government could influence public demand for certain products to fluctuate based on its benefit to the economy as a whole. b. Another concept of Keynesian thought is that of excessive savings. Mr. Keynes believed that if savings occurred in excess of the planned investment it would increase the possibility of a recession or depression. He believed that excessive savings were caused by discouraging business prospects, over investment in previous years, and a decrease in consumer demand. The law of supply and demand states simply that as savings increased interest rates would drop, until there was no longer reason to save; this plunging interest rate would bring the economy in balance once again. In the article What s Happening to Marriage? the authors David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead reverse the fairy tale of marriage. The article conveys a different aspect of marriage that marriage is weakening and divorce is on the rise. The authors believe men and women of this time have more struggles when marrying one another than when their parents or grandparents got married. The authors arguments are well supported, but their use of fallacies outweighs their theories. David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead claim that in today s society marriage is becoming more of a trust issue than previously thought. They believe marriages have none of these elements: ...an economic bond of mutual dependency; a social bond supported by the extended family and larger community; and a spiritual bond upheld by religious doctrine, observance and faith (520). Marriage is becoming more of a couples relationship and losing meaning in society s culture; therefore, the rate of divorce is increasing causing people to be cautious of marriage. Popenoe and Whitehead use numerous statistics about divorce rate; however, they only examine the women s point of view. According to the authors, this is not the first time marriage has gone to the dumps and recovered causing the authors to delay on writing marriage s obituary. This is very handy for seeing how bad and large an outbreak is and what species is affected, whether it is humans or birds. The incidence rate is a measure of morbidity and number of infected worldwide, looking over the past 10 years. Over the past ten years there have 650 infected.(Yu Chan, 2014). This is not a large number because of the fact it is not spread through human to human contact but through already infected poultry. The prevalence rate is the number of current/existing cases worldwide. If you can demonstrate through examples (preferably recent ones) that you ve succeeded in certain areas of interest, you ll likely be considered a strong candidate for the position. After all, if you did it somewhere else yesterday, you can do it for this company tomorrow. Your success stories should include the situation, the action you took and the result. Here is an example if you were interviewing for a sales position: The Situation: I had a customer who did not want to hear about the features of my merchandise because of a prior interaction with my company. The Action: I listened to her story and made sure I heard her complaint. I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Summary Of In Cold Blood By Truman Capote In Cold Blood by Truman Capote Entry #1: Speaker Truman Capote is described in the biography section of the book as being born in 1924 in New Orleans. He, over his lifetime, wrote a variety of works from short stories to memoirs. In the acknowledgments, he says that the information presented in the book is taken from official records or is the result of interviews. He then goes on to mention some of the important people to help make the book happen like the members of Finney County, the place where the event happened, and notable members of institutions like Kansas State University and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Capote did not find any of the information first hand, nor is he from the state in which the crime occurred. He simply wrote a clear account of what happened by using interviews and police notes after the fact. Truman Capote s relationship to the topic was simply that he volunteered to be the voice of a case that otherwise might not have been heard throughout the country and around the world in full detail and for years to come. Throughout the book, Capote establishes himself as a qualified and trustworthy writer through his use of ethos, or credibility. He shows the degree of precision and accuracy of his facts by mentioning highly trusted individuals and organizations. For example, he says while describing Alvin Dewey, the head of the case for the state as being a former sheriff of Finney County and F.B.I. Special Agent. When describing the total ... I have learned about a myriad of topics ranging from early Sumerian agricultural techniques to the U.S. intervention in Kosovo, therefore I will focus my efforts on an abbreviated overview of my studies. I will primarily focus on the governments of the major civilizations Ancient Egypt Ancient Egypt is one of the first great civilizations, and we have an unusually detailed record of their culture. Then the papacy began to unravel; Pope Boniface VIII excommunicated Philip IV, King of France, who in turn kidnapped the Pope and held him hostage. As a result of his captivity, Pope Boniface VIII died miserably. His successor, Benedict XI, lived for only a short while, and after his death the papal election was deadlocked. The College of the Cardinals finally elected Clement V, a Frenchman, as pope. He then moved to Avignon, which was essentially in France. Seven successive popes ruled out of Avignon; their reigns lasting almost 70 years. Pope Gregory XI then moved to Rome, ending the Avignon papacy. The College of Cardinals then selected Pope Urban VI as pope, but then they regretted it and elected another pope, Pope Clement VII, who moved back to Avignon. The rival popes and their successors continued to rule separately until Pope Martin V was elected by an ecunemiel council. The events of the 14th century weakened the papacy, and some started to see its hypocrisy. The stage was set for an attack on papal power, but not merely its temporal power, as before. United Airlines And Merger With Continental Airlines Essay ABSTRACT UAL Corp. s United Airlines announced merger with Continental Airlines Inc. on May 3, 2010 and became the world s largest airline. This $3 billion merger between the two airline companies lifted the beigest regulatory hurdle ever in the international aviation sector. In this paper, I will review through the timeline that covers from the announcement of the merger to the completion with major milestones noted and what role the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) was playing in this merger. TIMELINE June 2008: CEOs of both United Airlines and Continental Airlines signed and alliance pact. The alliance is an agreement to link international networks and share technology and passenger perks. This agreement is basically a virtual merger that includes many of the benefits of a merger without the actual costs and restructuring involved. The alliance took effect about a year after Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines completed their merger, as that released Continental from the SkyTeam contract and allowed for the required nine month notice. Additionally, Continental joined the Star Alliance, as Delta and Northwest merged. April 2010: United Airlines was reported to be in serious merger discussion with US Airways. May 2, 2010: The board of Directors at Continental and United Airlines approved a stock swap deal that would combine them into the world s largest airline. Both airlines have taken losses in the recession and expect the merger to generate savings of more than $1 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Everyone in the story has some kind of moxie that they can use over the other characters, but the desire for power takes everyone on a different path. Any time in the story when Victor Frankenstein needs to find and regain himself he looks to nature to find it all. His drive for success became so great that he went to make a creature that would make him very influential in the scientific world once he proved that he could create life with his bare hands. Victor was successful in creating the creature, but once he had created the creature he was disgusted with his creation and all his work became an eminent failure. Thanks to these people over the years activism has developed a clear and effective structure which has proven effective in history and a number of cultures. Understanding social justice is more than just knowing statistics, social justice requires one to identify with others stories, develop a sense of motivation, and knowing barriers one will face in one s journey. The next thing important to my own journey as a white male was understanding how oppression affects the motivation of an individual. To me, this meant breaking oppression down into non experiential and first hand experiences. Next was developing an activism cycle this meant learning how to recognize the need for change, joining an organization, taking action and following up by learning what one can do better in the future. • 39. The Bardo Thobins And The Tibetan Book Of The Dead The Coen Brothers film Miller s Crossing and William Kennedy s novel Legs revolve around the endeavors of underground criminal societies during Prohibition. This draws similarities with Joseph Campbell s work, The Hero With a Thousand Faces, because the criminal underworld corresponds to suppressing the Freudian id. On Kennedy s bookshelf, The Nietzsche Wagner Correspondence abuts Naked Mind and The Catholic Missal cohabits with The Tibetan Book of the Dead, flanked by a score of volumes on Joyce (Suplee 2). The Tibetan Book of the Dead, also known as the Bardo Thodol, expresses Buddhist teachings on death, rebirth, and the state of pause between the two. Along with Campbell s work, the Bardo Thodol gives readers the ability to analyze both Legs and Miller s Crossing on a more personal level. In fact, the central purpose of the Tibetan Book of the Dead is to inform readers of the importance of introspection and humility. In a more menacing way, gang narratives follow the model of the Bardo Thodol because the sinister underworld allows for pause between life and death. Tom and Marcus live out and display the intellectual honesty which Campbell and the Bardo Thodol praise. In order for the hero to change his life and the world for the better, he must self reflect and accept the call to adventure. Semiology is characterized as the science of signs which studies the life of signs within society. Signs include, among others, sounds, images, words, odors, objects; they are concepts that stand for something else in a system of signification. This idea is intrinsically related to the concepts of the sender and the viewer, which will be discussed in the next sections of this paper. The second issue discussed by the art historians is the sender of a work. In this section, Bal and Bryson define and differentiate the composition of the artist of a work. First, there is the concept of the sender as an individual, or J. Bloggs, as they call him. J. Bloggs stands for the name of the individual, a designation, not a description;[...] it does not assign any particular characteristics to its bearer (p.181). The second aspect of the sender is the author, which is in the works, in a body of artifacts and in the complex operations performed on them (p.181). It is the notions of enframement that distinguishes J.Bloggs from the author, which is what Bal and Bryson identify as an elaborate work of framing, something we can elaborately produce rather than something we simply find (p. 181). The art historian, Culler, explains that authorship is given, not produced, as he states that what counts as authorship is determined by interpretative strategies (p.181). Thus, in simpler terms, the author or artist could be produced in the sense that his attributed works and other interpretable material, and ultimately produce a conception. • 43. Why Women Should Not Be Sexualized And Objectified The Way... David Dale 1 Why women should not be sexualized and objectified the way they are in video games today: Most of us would already know that women s representation in the media is highly sexualized and that women are regularly portrayed in a sexual manner and are objectified in all forms of media whether it be in magazines, online, television, movies, music videos, and of course video games (Wu, 2014). Many people derive gratification from what they read and hear every day without thinking about the way that women are being portrayed in these forms of media. Women are regularly used as an object to sell a game or used as eye candy to advertise and sell a product. The way that women in today s society are objectified and sexualized in media especially video games can lead to later unsocial behaviour by the participant and that s not a positive or desirable result for society. Video games have long been known as a male dominated media, when it comes to the market audience, player base, and character representation in game. Research concerning gender representation in video games often focuses on a few key points of how men and women are viewed differently, things like physical abilities, role in the game, and physical attributes are just a few to point out (Zorrilla, 2011). Something that is used a lot in video games is the sexualized depiction of female characters, the overwhelming masculinity of the implied game player, and the recurring structure of male heroes or characters ... But Siddhartha was not happy. (Page 6) This is a great example of perception vs. reality as everyone makes it seem that one person might be happy, but inside they can be at the complete opposite state. This causes him to have the desire for more wisdom than what he has been taught. He wanted to find out what was really important and wanted to feel no emotion in regards to what people think of him. What is concentration? What is the ability to leave one s body? What is fasting? What is retention of breath? It is a flight from the self, it is a brief escape from the torment of being I , it is a brief numbing of the mind to counter pain and the senselessness of life. (Page 9) Siddhartha is saying. that the practices of the samana are just a way of leaving life and its problems temporarily by making their bodies undergo these hardships. They eventually become numb with the pain and by doing so, the samana are able to leave their worries of the real world temporarily. Yes, he thought breather deeply, I will no longer try to escape from Siddhartha. I will learn from myself, be my own pupil; I will learn from myself the secret of Siddhartha. (Page 32) Here Siddhartha is demonstrating that he is the only one that matters when it comes to thoughts of who he is, and only his opinion of himself matters. Acceptance and the ability to look into himself will lead to that road of happiness. Also, to be minimalistic as to if there is nothing to be needed then it is not. This is something many people should take into consideration as to stay away from being materialistic. He looked around him as if seeing the world for the first time. The world was beautiful, strange, and mysterious. (page 39) Siddhartha Govinda left to join the Samanas to set themselves free for enlightenment. The Samanas put out the idea that you must eliminate the self so one can achieve spiritual fulfillment one day.
