A lot of times in life you feel some presence of absence. Now what the absence is can vary
greatly. You can feel this missing element in a lot of things in life. It can be from a loved one all
the way to a hobby. Obviously when you feel the absence, you have to find some way to deal
with it. That is exactly what Emily Bronte and Thomas Hardy do in their poems. In Emily
Bronte s poem the speaker is dealing with the loss of a loved one. The speaker is trying to make
some decisions on what to do and her way is one way to look at things. In Thomas Hardy s first

Progressives Were Groups Of Reformers
Progressives were groups of reformers dedicated to improve the social and the political problems
in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They live generally in the towns,
were well instructed professionals, and thought the government could be an instrument for the
transformation. They started a social movement that turned into a political movement.
Unfortunately, the remainder of the population was subject to law incomes, long working hours,
risky industrial tools, and unprincipled employers. Progressives believed the problems (poverty,
violence, greed, racism, class warfare) that the society faced could best be directed by offering
good education, a safe environment, and an efficient workplace. In the words of historian
Howard Zinn, the Progressives worked to stabilize the capitalist system by repairing its worst
defects. 2and restore some measure of class peace in a time of increasingly bitter clashes between
capital and labor (Zinn 354). The progressive tried to reform the United States; however, they were
incapable to make significant changes and improve the labors of the working class.
The social structure in America pushed people around because the opportunities were not equals.

Gender Aspects Of Gender
The way people look at gender has been changing over the past few years. Gender has always
been a social topic on what boys should do and what girls should do. Although, with the new
generation, I have seen people break the mold of gender stereotypes. Over the years, I have seen
many classmates and schools changing the status quo of gender. My generation has a different
opinion on gender stereotypes than my grandparents and even my parents. Gender stereotypes are
changing with each generation, whether it be through sports or the occupations people have.
My Grandparents went to high school in the mid 1950 s and women were not allowed to play many
sports back then. My Grandma told me that they thought the girls would get hurt. My
grandmother played basketball and they didn t let the girls cross the half court line. They had
three girls on each side so that they did not over exert themselves. Nowadays, girls can play
almost any sport they want. Hockey is a good example of how girls can play manlier sports.
When people think of hockey, they think of it more as a manlier sport, like football. There are
so many girls that play hockey with the same intensity as when men play. A good friend of mine,
who went to the same middle school as me, played on a travel hockey team. If you saw her, you
would never expect her to play hockey. She always wore dresses and has her hair done. She is not
your typical hockey playing girl. After seeing her play in a game, my impression of her changed.
She was very physical when going after other players with the puck. She would hit other players
into the glass now and then. She could handle other players hitting her pretty hard as well. She
got rocked by one player and just got back up on her skates and went back into the fray. Now, I
believe she is the toughest girl I know. She completely breaks the mold of the small, frail, girl
stereotype.

high school, and right next door to us was our sister school. Every year, the seniors and juniors

Stretching must be part of the total regimen. Focusing on stretching the hamstring muscles very
well is a good way to help prevent knee injuries. In particular, increasing hamstring flexibility
takes some pressure off of the kneecap. Furthermore, the end of activity stretch has been shown to
virtually eliminate postexercise muscle problems. Strengthening exercises are very important in
preventing injury, especially to the knee. Most of the protection afforded the knee comes from
the powerful quadriceps muscles, the hamstrings, and the calf muscles. These muscles control the
movement of the knee. If they do not have proper tension, the control of the joint will be lost.
When these muscles are weak, the knee is not only unprotected, it has to assume a much greater
load and this can be painful. Strengthening will also increase endurance. When I suffer knee pain
midway through a busy day, I do two simple exercises: (1) Straight leg raises from a sitting
position; (2) while sitting with my leg straight out, I tighten my leg muscles for a slow five count,

schools were built for religious purposes, but during this reformation period, the reformers wanted
better schools to make sure that the future voters would be informed. Also, these schools would

The History And Political Causes Of The Cold War
The Cold War refers to an era of U.S. history from roughly 1945 to 1990. Although the U.S.S.R.
and the U.S. fought ideological proxy wars in Vietnam, Korea, and Afghanistan, this era is referred
to as the Cold War because the United States and Soviet Union never actually engaged in war
themselves. The origins of the Cold Warcan be traced back to the finale of World War II. Beginning
with the Yalta Conference, the Allied powers of the Soviet Union, United States, and Great Britain
started a discussion concerning post war foreign policies. Specifically, the political system of
Poland became an important question for the Big Three . Should Poland be allowed to form a
democratically elected government, or should Russia be allowed to occupy Poland and further
expand their communist influence? Essentially, this question and many like it characterized the
motivation for the Cold War. The United States sought to contain communism while the Soviet
Union pushed for both land expansion and political influence across the globe. (CITE) Harry
Truman took the office of President just a few months before the end of World War II. Truman
inherited a plethora of dilemmas heading into the post War World II era, and he decided to take his
stance on international affairs in 1947 with the Truman Doctrine. Essentially, the Truman Doctrine

secure in foreign governments. This was a stark contrast from the popular isolationist paradigm of
the 20s and 30s. Furthermore, the Truman Doctrine prompted an unusual act of international

Meritocracy is a system that allows people to advance in life based on their quality of being
especificly worthy or good. This means that if a person demonstrates qualities that are viewed as
virtuous in society (merit) . In other words, they will rise above others in the group. The novelhas

For example, the tennis and volleyball courts, the fountain, the space of the children from day
care center, are all so perfect and beautiful in the eyes of Mae. When she sees all these wonders,
