Community pharmacy residency programs are postgraduate training programs focused on direct patient care, patient service development, and practice management. They are structured as either 1-month rotations in different practice settings over the course of a year, or as a longitudinal experience providing patient care 2-3 days per week at a single practice site. Originally developed in 1986, there are now 118 available community pharmacy residency positions in the US, though only 69 are accredited and most are located east of the Mississippi River. Graduates of these programs go on to careers in academia, ambulatory care, community pharmacy management, and other positions.
