This film will follow one man through his daily life without any verbal communication. No humans have spoken for two generations. The film will have a documentary style as the man goes about normal daily activities like eating, sleeping, working, and spending time with friends, all while being filmed but not interacting with the camera. Subtitles will provide the man's perspective and thoughts in diary form to convey the story and world where no one speaks. The filmmaker aims to use long, smooth camera shots and black and white photography to focus attention on the subtitles and visuals in this quiet, isolated story without speech.

1. Communication
No human being has communicated verbally for two
generations. The film follows one man around in his
everyday life.

2. The film’s content
• This film will focus on one character in a sort of documentary
style. The character will be aware of the camera filming but
make no contact. They will go about their life in silence, doing
all the things any other person would normally do now. Eating,
Sleeping, Travelling, Work and seeing friends (with no
communication).
• The people on camera will appear normal but will also have a
awkward camera presence due to the silence. It will feature
him alone, in public and amongst ‘friends’.
• Subtitles will run throughout, styled as though written by the
principle character in diary form, introducing himself and his
situation and actions, along with his view of the world around
him.

3. The film’s style
• I plan to make this film with longer takes and with smooth
camera movements.
• I plan to use B/W, so colour isn’t a distracting feature and
facial expressions are intensified . I also believe for a slow
quiet piece, this will attract further attention to the subtitles
and specific visuals.
• I would record sound in the locations filmed but when there
was nobody around (either adding extra ‘movement’ in sound
design or recordings on shoot). I hope this will create the
isolated and speechless environment.

5. Additional Characters / Extras
• Because of the nature of the people in this world and their
lack of dialogue, I feel it will be ok to let friends and other
acquaintances take up background or group roles in this piece.
• I also have other actors available if need be in scenes that may
feature a characters close associate or romantic interest.
• Scenes will be shot with various amounts of characters
involved. From the principle actor alone, to large groups of
commuters or workers.

6. Scenes I envisage so far…
• Alone in home, establishing the lead character
• Commuting to work
• With friends (almost socialising)
• A date with a female companion (awkward but sweet)
• Working
• Walking through the streets in large groups

7. The edit
• Currently I envisage the edit to be quite non linear, cutting
between the scenes, sometimes matching the story being told
in the subtitles, sometimes showing something completely
irrelevant to the words.
• The cuts will tend to be longer, maybeeach around 15-20
seconds and over.
The subtitles
• I imagine as said before these to be in a diary type form.
Almost autobiographical in delivery.
• I also imagine the story of how people came to be mute, will
take place in the subtitles.
