Laura Burgess’ A LEVEL
        Media
I wanted to create a stereotypical action film
opening. The sequence starts and you can get
into it quickly because the setting is
recognizable. You see the main character and
can instantly tell what he is like by the way he
walks and what is happening to him. This kind
of fast paced, action packed beginning draws
people in because it is exciting and make you
care what happens to the main character. You
can sympathize with him because everybody
bullies him for being different. The storyline of
my film is probably a bit different to the
stereotypical action movie because it is about an
   underappreciated, quite person getting his
revenge whereas they are usually about secret
                agents or explosions.
The needs of an opening sequence
• The sequence grabs the audience’s • I thought it would be a good idea for
attention by jumping straight into Klaus to have a different accent to the
it. rest of the characters to really make him
• The very opening shot is dramatic seem like an outsider.
with no music, just narration and
sound effects. I introduce the story
with narration. I think this is a
good way to convey the story
      effectively because it tells you
straight rather than leave it to
                guess work.
 • You want to watch the rest of the
film because the way it is filmed
makes you feel sorry for Klaus and
you want him to be happy.
Addressing my audience
 • Viewing other movie beginnings of the same genre. I
took lots of notes in the camera shots, music, costume
                              ect.
 • Costume important because when in motion you see
colours . Klaus to wear red and black; both dark and
meaningful colours, black symbolised as death and red
                           of blood.
• Costume continuity problems-: some cast turned up in
different clothes. Hard when filming takes place
                     several weeks apart.
  • I addressed my audience by drawing them in with a
sad story to make you feel sorry for Klaus and then a
fast paced, action packed and thrilling chase.
Representation
        My media product mainly
            represents the quite kid
           (Klaus) who is bullied for
                being different.
The bullies are sort of like the
          predators and the meeker
are their prey, but this time
the prey is to rise above
them and become top of the
                  food chain.
           I think that the school
             environment is really
         relatable to almost everyone
          because almost everybody
              has been in a school
                 environment.
Does it make sense?
I think that the story does make sense
because it’s not hard to grasp due to the
 narration. The stereotypical characters
types are easy to recognise in the school
              environment.
Pace
   • Fast pace for scene of danger

   • To do this I used lots of short
clips put together. I wanted the
shots to be strong and dynamic

  • Camera handheld sometimes to
    show fast and jerky movements
               of chase.

   • Music changes a few times to
       reflect the different moods.
      Sound is muted when Klaus
     falls down stairs to emphasise
                  the fall.
Distribution
   • film company-
  :Universal Pictures;
   make action films.
• I think that my film
   would be a twelve
    due to moderate
      language and
        violence.
Age rating
      • "Moderate language is
        allowed. The use of strong
                language (for
         example, ‘fuck’) must be
                 infrequent."
       • "Moderate violence is
      allowed but should not dwell
        on detail. There should be
       no emphasis on injuries or
        blood, but occasional gory
       moments may be permitted
        if justified by the context.
      Sexual violence may only be
             implied or briefly
      and discreetly indicated, and
            must have a strong
         contextual justification."
Soundtrack
The soundtrack I intended
 to use wasn’t compatible
    with the computer
  program I used, which
   was unfortunate but
  nothing could be done
about it. So instead I had
 to use the copyright free
  tracks on IMovie. The
 original soundtrack was
   written and recorded
     especially for this
         sequence.
What have I learnt?
I have learnt how to effectively film a chase scene, by using short clips
and putting them together in IMovie. I also learnt that the beats in
music really change the mood of the sequences. In progression from
preliminary to main piece I have learnt are-:
    • You need permission to film in graveyards and on private land
• It is very difficult to film in the middle of town due to the public and
                                      traffic
 • There are many limitations on shots e.g. you cannot very easily get
                                   areal shots
If I were to film this again I would make a few improvements to the
                              sequence including-:
  • Recording the soundtrack on a IMac compatible recording devise
          • Film all shots together to stop continuity problems
• Maybe have the chase take pace through a park or somewhere where
there is not much traffic. Traffic and people moving in front of the
                           camera was a large problem
