Listening Harder: Bike/Walk Promotion in Disadvantaged Neighborhoods
Increasingly, people are challenging governments about whether they are doing enough to promote equity. As ped/bike professionals, we need to have a good answer. In this session, learn how the Go Bronzeville program overcame numerous obstacles to transforming travel behavior on Chicago's south side. We will discuss overcoming community resistance to bike/walk campaigns, and how engaging in respectful, community-led dialogue supports health, justice, and community empowerment. We will also share how community partners & local outreach staff steered the Go Bronzeville program in the right direction. This session will help you better meet the needs of lower-income and disadvantaged communities.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will gain insight into why low-income communities may not see biking and walking as top priorities.
Participants will better understand how to talk about biking, walking, and transportation options with potential partner groups.
Participants will learn from the mistakes we made before we had hired outreach ambassadors from the neighborhood to keep us on track.
Participants will be able to envision how active transportation campaigns could evolve to meet the needs of low-income communities.
