COMMON TERM IN PHARMACOLOGY

 Absorption: Process by which medications are taken into
the body
 Adverse effect: Undesired, potentially harmful side effects
of drugs
 Agonist: Drug that binds to a receptor, stimulates the
receptor's function
 Antagonist: Drug that binds to a receptor and prevents a
response
 Bioavailability: The amt of unbound drug molecules able to
cause a desired effect
 Biotechnology: Proteins produced from bacteria by altering
DNA to make drugs
 Biotransformation: Metabolism or breaking down of drug
molecules in the liver
 Bolus: Drug dose given rapidly IV. One time rapid infusion
 Idiosyncratic effect: rare, unpredicatble adverse reaction to
a drug
 Indication: reason or purpose for giving a medication.
 Metabolism: the breaking down of drug molecules.
 Parenteral: any medication administration route other than
the alimentary canal
 Pharmacodynamics: study of drugs and their actions in
living organisms
 Pharmacokinetics: the study of metabolism and action of
drugs: absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion
 plasma protein binding: the ability of drugs to attach to
receptor sites on plasma proteins
 Reconstituted: process of mixing a semisolid substance with
liquid in preparation for administration
 side effects: expected but unintended action/effect of a drug
 Synergist: medication that enhances the effect of another
drug
 Topical: pertaining to being applied to a surface
 Hypersensitivity: Adverse effect/allergic reaction resulting
from a previous exposure to a drug
 Analgesics are medicines that are used to relieve pain.
 Anesthetic: A substance that causes lack of feeling or
awareness, dulli
 Antibacterial: Anything that destroys bacteria or suppresses
their growth or their ability to reproduce. ng pain to permit
surgery and other painful procedures.
 Anticonvulsant: A medication used to control (prevent)
seizures (convulsions) or stop an ongoing series of seizures.
 Antidementia drugs are pharmaceutical agents that may
slow the progression or otherwise benefit patients
with dementia of the Alzheimer's type.
 Contraindication: Reason against giving a particular
drug
 Distribution: Process of transporting medication
throughout the body
 Duration: Time between onset and disapperance of
drug effects
 Emulsion: A mixter of water and oil bound with an
emulsifier
 Enteral: Pertaining to the GI tract, a medication
administration category
 Excretion: Process of elimination of drug molecules
from the body
 Antidepressant: Anything, and especially a drug, used to
prevent or treat depression.
 Antidote : An antidote is a chemical substance that stops or
controls the effect of a poison.
 Antiemetic : An antiemetic is a drug that is effective against
vomiting and nausea.
 Antifungal: A medication that limits or prevents the growth of
yeasts and other fungal organisms.
 Antiinflammatory: A drug or substance that
reduces inflammation (redness, swelling, and pain) in the body.
 Antimigraine drugs are medications intended to reduce the
effects or intensity of migraine headache.
 Antimyasthenic agents : an agent that counteracts or
relieves muscular weakness in myasthenia gravis.
 Antineoplastic: Acting to prevent, inhibit or halt the
development of a neoplasm (a tumor).
 Antiparasitic: Effective in the treatment of parasites.

  • 2.  Absorption: Process by which medications are taken into the body  Adverse effect: Undesired, potentially harmful side effects of drugs  Agonist: Drug that binds to a receptor, stimulates the receptor's function  Antagonist: Drug that binds to a receptor and prevents a response  Bioavailability: The amt of unbound drug molecules able to cause a desired effect  Biotechnology: Proteins produced from bacteria by altering DNA to make drugs  Biotransformation: Metabolism or breaking down of drug molecules in the liver  Bolus: Drug dose given rapidly IV. One time rapid infusion
  • 3.  Idiosyncratic effect: rare, unpredicatble adverse reaction to a drug  Indication: reason or purpose for giving a medication.  Metabolism: the breaking down of drug molecules.  Parenteral: any medication administration route other than the alimentary canal  Pharmacodynamics: study of drugs and their actions in living organisms  Pharmacokinetics: the study of metabolism and action of drugs: absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion
  • 4.  plasma protein binding: the ability of drugs to attach to receptor sites on plasma proteins  Reconstituted: process of mixing a semisolid substance with liquid in preparation for administration  side effects: expected but unintended action/effect of a drug  Synergist: medication that enhances the effect of another drug  Topical: pertaining to being applied to a surface  Hypersensitivity: Adverse effect/allergic reaction resulting from a previous exposure to a drug
  • 5.  Analgesics are medicines that are used to relieve pain.  Anesthetic: A substance that causes lack of feeling or awareness, dulli  Antibacterial: Anything that destroys bacteria or suppresses their growth or their ability to reproduce. ng pain to permit surgery and other painful procedures.  Anticonvulsant: A medication used to control (prevent) seizures (convulsions) or stop an ongoing series of seizures.  Antidementia drugs are pharmaceutical agents that may slow the progression or otherwise benefit patients with dementia of the Alzheimer's type.
  • 6.  Contraindication: Reason against giving a particular drug  Distribution: Process of transporting medication throughout the body  Duration: Time between onset and disapperance of drug effects  Emulsion: A mixter of water and oil bound with an emulsifier  Enteral: Pertaining to the GI tract, a medication administration category  Excretion: Process of elimination of drug molecules from the body
  • 7.  Antidepressant: Anything, and especially a drug, used to prevent or treat depression.  Antidote : An antidote is a chemical substance that stops or controls the effect of a poison.  Antiemetic : An antiemetic is a drug that is effective against vomiting and nausea.  Antifungal: A medication that limits or prevents the growth of yeasts and other fungal organisms.  Antiinflammatory: A drug or substance that reduces inflammation (redness, swelling, and pain) in the body.  Antimigraine drugs are medications intended to reduce the effects or intensity of migraine headache.
  • 8.  Antimyasthenic agents : an agent that counteracts or relieves muscular weakness in myasthenia gravis.  Antineoplastic: Acting to prevent, inhibit or halt the development of a neoplasm (a tumor).  Antiparasitic: Effective in the treatment of parasites.
