This document discusses the Common Core Learning Standards and their focus on preparing all students for college and careers. It notes that surveys found 42% of college instructors and 45% of employers feel recent high school graduates are not prepared. The Common Core aims to change this by establishing consistent, higher standards across states in key areas like higher-order thinking skills, close reading, research skills, and problem solving. It emphasizes skills like comprehension, analysis, and argumentation. The Common Core also wants students to develop independence, value evidence, understand different perspectives, and use technology strategically. Its goal is for all students to graduate with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed after high school.
This document discusses the six major shifts in English Language Arts (ELA) standards according to the Common Core, including a focus on more informational texts and building knowledge in various disciplines. It provides resources on determining text complexity and examples of student writing. The objectives are to look at exemplar student work, create an assessment and unit plan based on an exemplar text, and discuss components of an effective unit that aligns to the ELA shifts.

The annual report summarizes the activities of the New Providence Elementary School Learning Commons for the 2015-2016 school year. Key events included visits from authors, participation in various reading programs, hosting makerspace activities, and teaching over 450 classes on topics like research skills and use of library resources. The webinar provided an overview of literacy programs offered by Reading is Fundamental (RIF), USO, and The Hadley School for the Blind. RIF aims to motivate children to read and has distributed over 410 million books. The USO's United Through Reading program allows deployed parents to read stories to their children. The Hadley School provides distance education courses in braille and assistive technologies to over 10,000 blind students annually. Representatives from each organization discussed partnership opportunities for Lions clubs to support literacy and education initiatives.
When we started at the South Sioux City Public Library two years ago the library was having difficult times. Circulation and attendance numbers were down. The public’s opinion of the library was not positive. In two years’ time period we have seen an increase of circulation from 21000 items to over 40000 items. We have seen attendance numbers for youth climb from 2000 to 6000 and adult attendance has gone from 800 participants to over 3000 participants. This presentation will tell what we did to turn the program around. Presenters: David Mixdorf, Dan Nieman, Odessa Meyer, South Sioux City Public Library.

School’s out for summer, as you’ve probably noticed because of the recent influx of tots and teens participating in your story hours and book clubs. Public librarians with experience in youth outreach will spend this hour sharing what has worked and what has not when it comes to reaching this patron population at their libraries. Bring your own best practices to share with the group as well.
The document discusses planning an engaging thematic unit for a summer program. It emphasizes that a thematic approach uses a central idea to connect activities from multiple subjects. Examples of themes that could be used are presented, such as "Camp" and "The Forest". Planning steps are outlined, including developing a meaningful theme, brainstorming related activities, setting appropriate student outcomes, and creating a big idea statement and assessment for a theme. The purpose of high-quality summer programs is to help reduce summer learning loss and bridge resource gaps through engaging academic and youth development learning experiences.

This presentation was delivered by Fayetteville Free Library's Executive Director, Susan Considine, and Director of Community Engagement and Experience, Leah Kraus, at the Computers in Libraries conference in March 2016.
This document discusses how libraries can incorporate making and maker culture through inspiration, innovation, and education rather than needing expensive equipment or large spaces. It provides examples of how Fayetteville Free Library and other libraries inspire community members through activities like Lego robotics and sewing clubs. These activities allow participants to develop innovative solutions and educate each other. The document emphasizes that libraries should start with their own community's interests and needs rather than replicating what others are doing.
The Fayetteville Free Library in Fayetteville, New York opened the nation's first library makerspace, called the Fab Lab, to provide free and open access to tools and technology for community members to discover, create and build projects. The Fab Lab has been highly successful, with over 10,000 hours of 3D printing time logged and hundreds of community members certified to use the 3D printers, laser cutters, and vinyl cutters. In addition to open access, the Fab Lab also offers classes, camps, and programming led by volunteers to teach skills like 3D modeling and sewing to over 300 attendees. The makerspace has supported entrepreneurship in the community and strengthened local partnerships and small businesses.
