Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.
You could be a professional graphic designer and still make mistakes. There is always the possibility of human error. On the other hand if you’re not a designer, the chances of making some common graphic design mistakes are even higher. Because you don’t know what you don’t know. That’s where this blog comes in. To make your job easier and help you create better designs, we have put together a list of common graphic design mistakes that you need to avoid.

Design a brochure for a company.
I brainstormed a new concept of a local music
radio station for Rexburg and the appealing
elements it might have. Next, I created a rough
layout in InDesign and sketched out logos by
hand, using the silhouette of the iconic Taylor
building on campus. I then created the logo in
Illustrator.
Back in InDesign, I altered the fill, tweaked
the font, and added the logo. I found images
online, edited them in Photoshop, and then
placed them into the InDesign document. Fi-
nally, I wrote and formatted the body text.

I brainstormed things to showcase about my-
self, looked for a photo to use, decided on one
of me in St. Petersburg, Russia. I used that to
create a rough draft and receive peer feed-
back, but decided that I didn’t like it. So I met
up with a classmate to take some more profes-
sional photos, and completely redid my layout
with both sketches and InDesign.
I then brainstormed interesting article titles, and
inserted them into the InDesign document. I re-
ceived feedback from my father and my room-
mate and adjusted the design to all sans-serif
fonts. I continued tweaking the design until I
was satisfied.

I chose a quote from a recent BYU-Idaho
devotional: “God knows what you need be-
fore you even ask,” based on Mark 6:8. Then,
I brainstormed visual layouts, and decided on
a girl in the desert, waiting for the rain. I found
source photos for on Unsplash.com and Stock-
stap.io, and created a rough draft.
Next, I opened the photos in Photoshop, used
the brush tool to blend them together. Using
the lasso tool, I added and blended in the girl. I
overlaid a photo of rain on the entire image as
another layer, and used the brush tool to blend
it in. Finally, I added and formatted the text.

Create an infographic that organizes data in a
visually pleasing way.
Since I love dancing and know a lot about it,
I chose to feature it in my design. I looked up
random facts about ballroom dancing that I
could visually represent, and then brainstormed
how I would implement it.
I created the icons in illustrator using images I
found online, and then incorporated them into
a photoshop document. I kept tweaking the
layout until I was satisfied that it flowed well.
The last thing I did was choose a background
that showcased the glamorous nature of ball-
room.

I decided to use the same video streaming

ready had the logo and color scheme finalized.
I then looked at some other streaming sites for
layout inspiration, and decided on a center
aligned home page featuring different genres
of movies.
Next, I brainstormed genres that I could in-
clude, looked up corresponding photos, and
then placed them into the photoshop docu-
ment. The last thing I did was decide on the
text and font, and insert the social media icons.

I picked a funny quote and created a rough
draft one image, but I discarded it in favor of
an image of girls laughing. After watching
some instructional videos on I-Learn, I adjusted
the light levels and color of the image in Pho-
toshop. Next, I sketched various layouts and
chose one that seemed well balanced.
I then made a new document in Photoshop,
changed the background of the document to
green, inserted my circles, filled them with col-
or, and added the text. Finally, I adjusted the
alignment, changed the font, and altered the
text color.

Since I know it so well, I started by brainstorm-
ing different ballroom dances, going with the
ten dances of International Ballroom style. I
searched a stock images and found a photo of
a couple’s feet as they prepare to start dancing.
I thought this would work well with a sort of
swirly path for the slides, in and out of their feet.
I then searched the internet for pictures that
embodied each of the dances, and created
one slide per dance, with a brief descriptive
phrase. Next, I double checked the alignment
for the text, and shrunk each of the slides to
create more negative space.

Next, I customized the CSS to match the col-

Finally, I eliminated the rounded corners, made

I came up with a new business idea as an
internet streaming service for LDS and Chris-
tian produced films. I began sketching the logo,
using symbols familiar to LDS audiences. I de-
cided on a shield-shaped video camera, facing
the company name.
Next, I did research on fonts and colors to find
ones appealing for my audience, and chose
blue, green, and yellow. After watching some
instructional videos, I designed the logo in
Illustrator. I brainstormed the layout for the
letterhead and business cards, and also de-
signed them in Illustrator. Finally, I checked for
alignment and repetition.
