How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary
texts?

Intro
• My A2 media studies coursework required my group
and I to make a short film of 5 minutes in its entirety.
We also needed to create ancillary tasks that would
correlate and follow the codes and conventions of the
genre of the film. Prior to this, I had put together the
codes and conventions of a psychological drama film,
after extensive research through other similar
products, as I feel this is essential for a successful
product. I did this in order to make the film expand and
attract and keep the audience engaged and interested
in the film. Together with the ancillary products this
will increase the overall efficiency of the whole
package.
Film Poster
• The purpose of a film poster is to advertise
the film through the title, the images
portrayed, the actors' names, the
design/colors and the tagline. Using these
elements to make the poster sellable,
attractive and connected with the other
products. Each person in my group created 3
different posters for our short film.
I used this particular font for the title as it comes across as
rough and rusty and unkempt. To me, this font has the
connotations of roughness. My intentions were to use it to
foreshadow the mise en scene of most of the film, the
majority of the film is low light and filmed in the run down
area of South London.
The tagline of
‘some friends
need to be let
go’ is my
attempt at
foreshadowing
the plot. It
insinuates that
there would
be a division
among the
characters. I
feel the length
of the tagline
would
encourage
people to
watch it as it
only gives a
taster of what
might happen
in the film.
The main
image of the
poster is of the
two main
characters, I
have one of
the characters
with missing
eyes I think
that this image
would catch
the attention
of the
audience and
fits well with
the
psychological
feel that the
whole film is
going for.
The film credits I have added at the top give the poster a
more professional feel and make it seem more like a real
movie poster as this is an essential of most film posters.
Radio advert
• After listening to other film radio adverts I
used that to try and create my own radio
advert that would have those conventions and
would effectively try reveal more about my
short film.
Radio Advert
• The narrators voice of the radio advert was done
by a female as that is usually the voice used in
radio adverts.
• In the radio advert I also had dialogue of the
parts from the short film and this was to give the
audience a snippet of the short film without
revealing too much of the storyline.
• The music that was used in the radio advert was
very slow and and quite mysterious which fits
with the genre of our movie and also sets the
scene for the audience.
Combination
• I believe that the combination of both my film poster
and my radio advert would be very effective in
attracting an audience that would watch my short film.
The use of the film poster is good as promotion of the
main film as it has the right amount of images and
mystery in it that would most likely attract and interest
a specific audience.
• The radio advert is also effective in the promotion of
the main film as it allows for the attracted audience to
be further intrigued by the small amount of dialogue
that is given to them.
