EVALUATION – QUESTION 2
HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT
AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
THE POSTER
• My film poster is linked to our short film (The Scourge) by using the colours: red, black and grey as this code is easily associated with the horror genre, as it
connotes danger or something evil. For the title I have also used the colour red as it is bold and stands out and will inevitable catch the viewers attention. I have
also used the colour white for the other text/titling as this also connotes a sense of innocence and fear, which is important as Jason, the central character, seems
to be victimised and innocent throughout the screening
• Through the use of imagery, I hinted/displayed the narrative to the audience by showing the image of the setting on the actual poster and creating that direct link
between the film poster and the film itself
• My film poster is linked to the film in other ways. Firstly the central image used is linked to the actual film because it’s a still shot which was taken from the short
film. Also the black and white effect which I had added also links to the film because it creates that sense of something eerie and that horror element which is
what our short film is based on.
• Furthermore the film tagline also relates to the film because it allows the audience to actually think about the question 'Who resides with you?', this is also a
central thing in our short film as Jason, the central character, doesn't know what's in his house.
• Also the credits are linked as it states 'Missing piece productions' and there's even a logo of our production company, which was used in the production process of
our main product(the short film)
• My ancillary text(film poster) also promotes the film through the ideas of 'CONVERGENCE' because our film production company is presented on the film poster
and this production company is also known to create the short film 'The Scourge'. The titling of the film also uses that eerie font to create that horror effect and
the displaying of the text 'The Scourge' also shows that the poster was created for our specific film. Also this name stands out as its our USP because you don’t
often see the word ‘Scourge’ in a film title/or the film itself. This is an effective and powerful word which strongly links the ancillary texts and the main product as
that’s what the film is about (great suffering caused to someone)
• My film poster was targeted at 12-21 year olds as these age ranges tend to like horror/mystery film.
• I managed to add that horror/ black and white/ blur effect to create that horror/msytery atmosphere as this was the genre our short film was based on
• The tagline is also linked to the film as the question triggers that sense of fear/confusion/paranoia which is the overall theme of our short film.
• Furthermore the film poster is important as it is used to advertise and promote the film as it is the first visual and insight into the film before its theatrical release.
• My poster also promotes our short film by having the production company displayed, this is important in posters as it allowed the viewer to recognise an up and
coming production company and their stars/members involved, which can prove to be effective in attracting an audience which previously enjoyed the groups
work.
THE REVIEW
• For this ancillary text(film review) we were given a specific publication to base our review on and to emulate its style in our own reviews. I had
to emulate the style/element of the Little White Lies magazine reviews/articles. The magazine layout/style wasn't really similar to the style of
our short film, which was a horror. However this style(Little White Lies) still proved to be effective as its professional and effective overall.
• The review I made promotes our short film a lot because it points out the positives and negatives of our advanced main production such as the
postivies including the fairly decent acting/ good cinematography, whilst also mentioning the negatives such as the dialogue sound when some
of the characters are conversating. This gives an truthful and insightful overall summary/brief of the film which the viewer then may watch. It
also mentions our central characters in the film and also the central characters, in our production company(Missing piece productions),
involved in the production process, and also of their achievements in previous works such as Mine and Ciprians thriller opening last year and
Luke and Edens previous works as well.
• The review focuses on many aspects of the film such as mentioning the themes involved, for example fear, paranoia, horror, mystery and
anxiety and how they are used and linked to the short film itself.
• My film review reflects and outlines the real strengths and weaknesses of our main product to a great extent, as it mentions the positives of
our main product despite the limitations which we faced, such as a low budget. It also mentions the weaknesses which our short film faced.
• When writing my ancillary text (film review) I had to emulate the ”Little White Lies” language, layout and their style. However a problem which
we faced was that this Little White Lies style wasn’t really designed for our target audience of the ages 12-21
• Finally another way my film poster promotes our short film is by displaying an image/shot of the film, which is effective as once again it is the
first visual they see of our short film.
SUMMARY
Our production company heavily relied on the two ancillary texts(Poster and review) to draw in our desired
target audience and to also promote our film at the same time. This proved to be effective.
In conclusion, I believe that the three products(the main product and the ancillary texts) all worked
together very well and in their own way. This is because the same concept is applied and displayed
throughout my works, however I have found that the poster and the actual short film link with each other
more, whereas for the film review I didn’t challenge the codes and conventions of typical Little White Lies
reviews/articles. I had followed their steps and styles, even though I didn’t challenge their style, overall I
believe I still managed to create a professional ancillary text(film review) all due to their guidance.
