Without the ocean, life as humankind knows it would be impossible. The ocean has
provided the man a bountiful amount of resources. It is easy to think that the big
blue is man s friend. Though with ninety five percent of the ocean unexplored, it is
easy to think that it is more than sandy beaches and volleyball. Stories such as The
SeaDevil and Edward s Rocks express the idea that the sea, as beautiful as it is, can
also be equally as powerful and mysterious. Though stories share similarities they also
have differences between their protagonist, conflict, and settings.
The two stories have many similarities though their locations differ. Both take place
at night in a marine area, with both of the protagonists on a pursuit. and Though
they take place in different decades the stories both occur at night. In The Sea
Devil, the night is described as Black as a witch s cat (Gordon, n.d., p. 2).
However, unlike Edward s Rocks, The Sea Devil takes place in a warm Florida bay
in late September, whereas Edward s Rocks takes place in a quiet fishing village
of Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland (Ritson, 1997, p. 300). Edward s Rocks
describes George as a hardy fisherman who hunts for seals for a living with his
father and two brothers. While George and his brothers and father are searching for
