Deemed a degenerate by the Nazis,
Kokoschka fled Austria to England in
1934 where he painted anti-Fascist
works and portraits, as well as
landscapes in watercolor.

American 1917-2009
Wyeth said that although the public
considered him a realist, he thought of
himself as an abstractionist.

American 1887 – 1986
Her paintings emphasized abstract form
and mystical light.
Images you think are small in size are actually
big -- and vice versa.
Paul Cezanne
French, 1839-1906
Cezanne’s rhythmic, exploratory brushstrokes
create planes of color.
He laid the foundation for the transition from
19th-century Impressionism to 20th century
Cubism.
Both Matisse and Picasso said “Cezanne is the
father of us all.”

Claude Monet
French, 1840-1926
Monet was a founder of French Impressionist painting.
Throughout his career, he worked on "series" paintings,
in which a subject was depicted in varying light and
weather conditions.
The term "Impressionism" is derived from the title of
his painting Impression, Sunrise.
Henri Matisse
French, 1869-1954
A bridge between Impressionism and
modern art, Matisse helped found the Fauve
(Wild Beast) school, so-called for its “wild”
color.
He was also influenced by the patterned art
of Morocco.
Marc Chagall
Russian 1887-1985
Chagall used bright color and themes
from Jewish folktales in a dreamy
surrealist and cubist style.

Notes to Myself When I Start a Painting
Richard Diebenkorn
1. Attempt what is not certain. Certainty may or may not come later.
2. The pretty, initial position which falls short of completeness is not to be valued – except as a stimulus for further
moves. Use initial fresh qualities. Respond to them. But consider them absolutely expendable.
3. Do search. But search in order to find other than that which you searched for.
4.. Somehow don’t be bored – but if you must be bored, then use it for action. Use its destructive potential.
5. Mistakes can’t be erased but they can move you from your present position.
6. Keep thinking about Utopia.
7. Tolerate chaos.
8. Be careful only in a perverse way.

  • 60. Notes to Myself When I Start a Painting Richard Diebenkorn 1. Attempt what is not certain. Certainty may or may not come later. 2. The pretty, initial position which falls short of completeness is not to be valued – except as a stimulus for further moves. Use initial fresh qualities. Respond to them. But consider them absolutely expendable. 3. Do search. But search in order to find other than that which you searched for. 4.. Somehow don’t be bored – but if you must be bored, then use it for action. Use its destructive potential. 5. Mistakes can’t be erased but they can move you from your present position. 6. Keep thinking about Utopia. 7. Tolerate chaos. 8. Be careful only in a perverse way.
