Colombia was first inhabited by indigenous groups like the Muisca and Tairona. It was claimed by Spain in 1499 and became part of the Republic of New Granada after independence in 1819. Colombia has the oldest conservative and liberal parties in South America, which originated in the 1840s. In recent decades, guerrilla groups lost control of territory after peace processes, and homicide rates declined but increased again in some cities due to gangs. The population is mostly mestizo or white, with indigenous and Afro-Colombian minorities concentrated in certain areas.
