Lady Capulet In Romeo And Juliet
Lady Capulet, mostly known for being Juliet s mother, is the wife of the rich patriarch of the
Capulet family, therefore, she is high up in the aristocracy. Their family have specific ways in
which they must carry themselves. Lady Capulet is never seen exhibiting any behavior that
could be misconstrued as inappropriate, and is always worried about what others will think. For
example, as woman who herself married young, is very eager for her daughter to marry Paris, a
kinsman of the Prince. Her only wish is for her daughter to fulfill her duty as a woman in the
Elizibeathen Era, which is basically to marry someone of high social status and with a large
amount of money. If Juliet were to not be married or if it were to a lowly man, she would... Show

In this, Lady Capulet is portrayed as the submissive wife, similar to the original play does.
Unfortunately, in that time, that view of woman came very easily to the actors because it was
the view that was held by most then. She always let her husband take the control from her. When
she would get mad at her daughter for not obeying, she would let Capulet practically verbally
abuse Juliet. She warns Juliet of how mad her father will get, but doesn t discipline Juliet,
herself. This is just one example of her stepping aside to Capulet. In the play, it seems that Lady
Capulet leaves more of a statement, but in the movie, she speaks under her breath, as though she
is scared of her own husband. This is not the only time this occurs. In Act I Scene I, her husband
calls for his sword, but she, almost whispering it says that he needs a crutch instead. This, of
course, saying that he is too old for fighting in a more playful way, yet her body language
conveyed that she felt uncomfortable. In the play, she says it like she is mocking him in a more
explicit manner. As one could see, there were only minor differences between the two forms of
media, however, the main thing in common is the clear superiority of men over women, and that s
something could be brought into the

College Is A Waste Of Time And Money
The amount of money spent on one year alone of college can break someone s heart. For most
people college gets them to where they want to be, but with hard work and dedication going to
work right after high school can take you a long way. Getting out of high school and starting a
career early might be what some people want, but collegeis always an option with all the help they
have today. College is a waste of time and money for a couple reasons. The fact that you spend 13
years in school just to go on to most likely spend four more years at some sort of college makes
some kids think when it comes to should I go to college or not. Some kids believe that you can
make more money working right after high schoolthen heading to college for four years. Statistics
say in College is a Waste of Time and Money by Caroline Bird, that if you put in the money you
would have spent on college in the bank and let the interest alone build it up; by the time you are
ready to retire you will have an extra $199,000. Although no bank will give a student that kind of
money to put into a savings account that number opens a student s eyes. With that said, you will
be completely debt free if you choose to go into the work force directly after high school. In 2015
on average a student was in debt $35,000 after just one year. MarketWatch. N.p. Web. 26 Oct.
2016. That adds up to being around $140,000 after the completed their four year degree. With that
amount of money, you could by yourself

Jay-Z s From The Frying Pan Into The Fire
Hip hop is a culture created by people who felt that some aspects of the culture of capitalism did
not fit them. Hip hop was able to give them a form of expression, a means of earning and a better
representation for themselves. In Jay Z s essay One Eye Open , Jay Z shares his account, as a
pioneer of the genre itself, of how hip hop started to gain its popularity and standing back when
he was a young child and how it provides the people means to support their needs. In her essay
From the Frying Pan into the Fire , Arlie Russell Hochschild shares what does it take to create a
culture, she focused on how the capitalist economic systembecame a culture itself instead of
supporting one. Although hip hop may have started out as an opposition to some of the values of
capitalism, a lot of aspects of the hip hop culture thrive from the capitalist economy, it just follows a
different set of rules.
Even though many might think that hip hop is a form of art and that capitalism is an economic
system, that is not all that they are, they can also be identified as cultural systems. A culture is
created when groups of people start to have unique social patterns, like their own food, cloth,
language and what not. Another way a culture is created is through rituals and an ideology that a
group of people start following. The culture of capitalism was created through the anxieties to
which it poses itself as a necessary answer (Hochschild 145). For this reason, what used to be just an

Essay on Julius Caesar
1. Early life Julius Caesar was born on July 13, 100 B.C. Though he was a descendent of the
oldest patrician family, Julius Caesar grew up in a very poor district of Rome called Subura. As a
child, he studied martial arts, history, and law ( Julius Caesar ). At the age of seventeen, Julius
married Cornelia, the daughter of Luciussulla, who was a dictator of Rome. Because Luciussulla
did not approve of the marriage, he tried to force the two to divorce, but they both refused. Julius
Caesarstudied philosophy and oratory in Greece. Soon after returning to Rome, Cornelia became
pregnant. Named after her father, the baby s name was Julia. Cornelia died in 68 B.C., leaving
Caesar to care for their daughter (Gruen,12). Still fairly... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Senate had originally refused to give Pompey this land, but because of Caesar they changed
their minds (Combee,95). Also, in 59 B.C., Pompey married Caesar s daughter, Julia
(Gruen,13). Caesar now desired to be governor of Gaul for a five year term. Also a great general,
Caesar spent years conquering Gaul. He became a loyal friend to many of the people there.
While conquering, Caesar became very powerful and very popular. His many conquests
continued and his army grew stronger and stronger (Combee,95). Fortunately, Caesar s
campaigns in Gaul brought great wealth and popularity to Rome. They also brought great
popularity to him ( Julius Caesar ). To many people, Caesar was a hero (Gruen,13). After his
second term as governor in Gaul, the hero returned to Rome. Growing very jealous of Caesar,
Pompey joined his enemies. The Senate persistently tried to disband Caesar s powerful army. He
refused to do this, which caused major friction with the Senate (Combee,95). Then, on January
10, 49 B.C., Caesar crossed the Rubicon River with his army. This was the start of the Civil War.
Afraid of the more powerful army, Pompey and his army retreated. Though, this was not the end.
Though they knew of his great conquering abilities, the enemies continued to plan the downfall of
Julius Caesar ( Julius Caesar ). As a conquer, Caesar was one of the greatest. He was greatly
honored for many of his victories. In 47 B.C.,

The National Football League on Legal Hits
The national football league has stiffened its policy on legal hits. The hit zone has shrunk, while
player frustrations have grown. The policy is enacted in an effort to reduce the number of
concussions in the game of football. The enforcement of these rules has strayed away from
being all about safety. The policy on hits has created a divide among its players and fans alike.
The policy of hits being enforced so strictly has had a significant impact on the sport. The
sociology of the NFL and the rule itself drive this argument. By stepping on the field as an NFL
football player, it is accepted that it is very dangerous. The players make enough money to make
the concussions worth it. Profiting from the fine money for these hits has caused the NFL to be
enforcing these rules unethically, the rules and the impact they have had on the sport have been
detrimental to football. The NFL has created a new acceptable hit zone which is very small.
Limiting a players area to deliver a hit has created a difficulty for them. Players have had to
completely adjust their approach to tackling. Players are becoming very frustrated with the new
rules, for example Pittsburgh Steelers player Ryan Clark states ...give a guy who is 200 pounds,
like myself, a 2 foot area to stop a guy who is 240 or 250 running at full speed. They might as
well just take us off the field... (Patra 1). This is evidence that NFL players are actually getting
frustrated with these rules. Ryan Clark is one of the most

Back Pain Research Paper
Textbooks have been around for ages, and yet they hold a lot of information, they do not contain
all that is needed. You would think with all the technology textbooks would be extinct by now.
Don t you think its about time they were replaced by some sort of electronic device? A couple of
students have already started using notebook computers instead of textbooks. In this time,
textbooks are not as sufficient since this generation practically runs on technology. With this
generation, textbooks can possibly disappear. Textbooks can weigh up to 15 pounds on a student
s back. This weight can cause backache and later turn into other problems, like scoliosis. This
back pain can affect students concentration. A study done by David Siambanes of the Inland
Empire Spine Center in Riverside, California. The study found that most students said that their
back hurt from their backpacks; 64% reported having back pain some time . In students reporting
pain, about 90% said their back pain was very bad. This back pain can cause students to lose focus
and even miss class or schoolfrom the unbearable pain.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paying for textbooks every year can be very expensive, where as buying a notebook computer can
last for a while. For college students, textbooks can also pile up for every class. A single college
textbook can cause up to 200 dollars, and every year the prices go up little by little. And as for
high school textbooks, they raise the tuition for private or catholic schools. Some teachers do not
use the textbooks and many tell the students to leave them at home and to use it for homework;
this being a waste of money. Tuition could be a lot lower if textbooks weren t still being used.
And if these textbooks were to be lost or damaged, that s even more money

Hawthorne Romanticism
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on the 4th of July, 1804 in Salem, Massachusetts to Nathaniel and
Elizabeth Clark Hathorne (Manning). He was an American writer who specialized in writing
short stories and romance novels. Among his many works are, The Scarlet Letter, The House of
Seven Gables, and Young Goodman Brown. Just like the works of Herman Melville and Edgar
Allan Poe, much of Hawthorne s works laid emphasis on the imperfect nature of human beings.
The imperfect nature of humans, he believed, was responsible for the tendency for men and
women of good hearts to commit sin and fall into despicable situations. Hawthorne s works can be
classified as a sub genre of Dark Romanticism, which highlights the unintended consequences and
complications that arise from well meaning efforts of people at making the society a better place to
live.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before Hawthorne, literature was considered a major tool used to elevate the human spirit.
However, according to Henry James (an American writer who moved to England and became a
British subject), what most appealed to Hawthorne s imagination was the old secret of mankind
in general... the secret that we are really not by any means so good as a well regulated society
requires us to appear. According to of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, civilization requires
people to suppress and deny their aggressive and sexual impulses, which leads to inner conflict,
guilt, and in some individuals to neurosis and psychosis. This is the area of human
consciousness that Hawthorne explored even before Freud was even born. Hawthorne
approached this topic in a guarded way, which is the reason why his works are so full of allegory
and symbolism. However, some of his predecessors like Stephen King had no such reservations in
his style of

Quiet American Quotes
In The Quiet American, Phuong s character is seen but not heard. Unlike Adah, it is unknown if
she had a supportive father in her life. At the start of the novel, Phuong is introduced as Thomas
Fowler s lover; an English reporter living in Vietnam. I shut my eyes and she was again what she
used to be: she was the his of steam, the clink of a cup, she was a certain hour of the night and
the promise of rest (Greene 4). In this quote Phuong is being reduced to the sexual pleasure she
once gave Thomas Fowler. As a man, he had the power to subject her to such descriptions as she
had no freedom to object that sort of behavior. Being a woman, especially a colonized woman,
Phuong experiences double persecution. Throughout the novel she is spoken about in third person,

For Phuong, her Vietnamese culture is compromised when she altered her physical appearance
after starting her relationship with Pyle. I saw that she was doing her hair differently, allowing it
to fall back and straight over her shoulder, I remembered that Pyle had once criticized the
elaborate hairdressing which she thought become the daughter of a mandarin (Greene 4). This
quote illustrates how a man, like Pyle had dominance over Phuong in such a way that she
changed her hair and way of dress because he preferred it that way. In Adah s case, mingling with
the Western women around her gave her more insight as to what her rights were in her marriage
with Francis. Once she finds out that Francis had been cheating on her she confronts the situation
in an effort to protect her children. The greatest mistake an African could make was to bring an
educated girl to London and let her mix with middle class English women. They soon know their
rights (Emecheta 241). For Francis, Adah getting a glimpse of the rights women had in England
scared him and threatened his dominance over

Dna Coding For Ampicillin Resistance And Green Fluorescent...
Abstract This experiment was performed to assess the efficacy of genetic transformations on
bacteria via plasmid DNA coding for ampicillin resistance and green fluorescent protein. Genetic
transformation was studied by taking transformed and untransformed Escherichia Coli (E. coli) and
placing them on various media to observe geneexpression via growth and color under UV light.
The transformed E. coli were able to grow on ampicillin while the untransformed E. coli, which
lacked the plasmidgenes for ampicillin resistance, only grew on nutrient broth. In the presence of
arabinose, the transformed E. coli glowed green. These results support the previous scientific
understanding of bacterial competency, vectors, and gene expression and support gene
transformations as an effective method to transfer the desirable DNAof one organism into another
organism s DNA. These results can be applied to real world issues such as medical treatments, food
production, and environmental conservation.
Introduction
Genetic engineering is used in health treatments, agricultural applications, and environmental
solutions. Genetic transformations incorporate foreign genetic material into the DNA of a different
organism via a vector, which carries the genetic material. Plasmid DNA is small, round, and
autonomous, due to its origin of replication. In biotechnology, plasmids carry beneficial genes, such
as antibiotic resistance, and also a reporter protein, in this case, Green Fluorescent Protein

Acceptance In Harrison Bergeron
Harrison Bergeron: A Look Into Acceptance
The short story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. is about acceptance. It reveals that
people, such as Harrison Bergeron, won t just simply accept things as they are and they will stand
up for themselves and others. Harrison was a symbol of the fact that people don t have to sit back
and accept injustice. Many of the citizens became accustomed to the injustice and were accepting of
it because that was just how things were. Harrison was one of the people who wouldn t accept the
injustices of the government and the dystopian society.
It all starts with Harrison Bergeron, George s son, being taken away from his family in April by the
government as a teenager to be handicapped due to his advanced

Official Age To Start Working Paper
Why is 14 the official age to start working? Why can t it be 12? I think that if people younger
than 14 wanted to get a job then they should be able to. The age to get working papers should be
moved from 14 to a younger age.
First of all, it would let kids work if they want to. Some kids are very mature for their age and want
to work. If the age was lowered then kids that aren t very mature will become more mature.
Lowering the age will also build character. They will realize how hard their parents work and this
will make them more grateful and they will want to work harder. This is one of the reasons I think
the age should be lowered.
Also, lowering the age to start working will help families who need money. A lot of families
need extra money and with another person working it could help. They could save money
earlier for college or for a car. By the time they will be able to get a job they ll already be driving
and they won t have money to buy a car because they don t have money saved. Working will make
them feel better about themselves. It will make them feel proud that they are saving money and
working hard. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

a job will give them experience in working. They will learn how to juggle a job and school before

Reading Characters In Walter Dean Myers s Bad Boy
Reading characters as windows is better because it allows one to get a look into different people
s lives. When a character in a book is a window it is so easy to learn about the character s life and
how it differs from my own. As a reader this lets you see life in a whole new manor. When you
read about lives that are different from your own you start to think about what someone had to go
through compared to you. Characters that are windows will help the reader make a connection
and reflect on the situations the characters are in. In the memoir, Bad Boy, by Walter Dean Myers,
the author describes his life growing up as a poor young African American. Walter comes to realize
that the racial struggles that surround him will mean he will have to overcome many obstacles in
his life to succeed. Walter had to go through many tragedies and hardships in his life... Show more

to be a secret vice. (p. 52) In Walter s world, he had to hide the books he was reading in order to
avoid being teased or roughed up. He lived in a world where academic success was deemed
worthless and not manly. Walter s world is vastly different from mine. Growing up here in
Westport, academic success is not only expected but desired. Comparing the differences in Walter s
environment to mine allows me to have empathy towards the struggles he had to overcome as a
young man. As I read the character as a window, I thought more about the harsh environments that
exist around the world where young children struggle. Reading characters as windows, is better
because it truly allows the reader to learn about others and how their worlds are different from their

The Human Papillomavirus ( Hpv ) Essay
The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the
United States among teens and young adults (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
2015). HPV is known to attack epithelial cells and as many as 75% to 80% of males and females
can become infected in their lifetime (Merck Sharp Dohme Corp., 2012). There are many
different strains some of which cause no symptoms and others that can cause genital warts, as well
as various types of oropharyngeal and/or anogenital cancers. There are currently three vaccines
licensed by the FDA since 2006 Cervarix, Gardasil, and Gardasil 9. These vaccines are a 3 dose
series recommended for routine use among girls and boys at ages 11 and 12, and ages 13 26 for
those who have not previously been infected. Although these vaccines do not protect against all
HPV strains, they do protect against the two most common high risk (cancer causing) strains
types 16 and 18. In addition to preventing types 16 and 18, the Gardasil vaccine protects against
the two most common low risk (genital warts causing) strains and the Gardasil 9 vaccine protects
against five additional cancer causing strains, as well as the other strains previously mentioned.
(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015)The purpose of the Bauldur Felskov et al
(2014) study was to assess the efficacy of the HPV vaccineagainst cervical lesions by comparing the
incidence trends before and after the vaccination program was first implemented.

Pediatric Concussion and ImPACT Testing
Pediatric Concussion and ImPACT Testing
The American Academy of Pediatrics estimated in a recent review that up to 3.8 million recreation
and sports related concussions occur annually in the United States, although only 300,000 are
reported each year ( Concussion, 2012). The brain of a young athlete is still developing, which
makes them more vulnerable to the effects of a concussion compared to an adult (Halstead Walter,
2010). The young athlete often neglects to report symptoms of concussion because they do not
want to sit out of their sport. This places them at a higher risk for a longer recovery along with
more serious consequences if they sustain a second concussion (Ahmann, 2013).
A concussion management model provides a medically recognized assessment system that is used
as part of overall concussion management protocol. In 2001, the Concussion in Sport Group
recommended that neurocognitive testing is one of the cornerstones in concussion management
(Solomon, 2014). Neurocognitive, or neuropsychological, testing is considered the core of
concussion management models, determining return to play and managing the recovery of the
athlete (Duff, 2009). Neurocognitive tests are computerized and have replaced the traditional paper
and pencil neurocognitive tests that were previously used in concussion management. The
Immediate Post Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) tool is a neurocognitive
test that was developed in the early 1990 s for

Every four years, the Parliament has a rehabilitation of all new members. Essentially, one of the
duties of the Parliament is in the legislation of laws regarding the budget of the country. It also

the Council of Guardians that usually determines who will run for any Assembly seat. This council
is the one that determines whether any law passed by the Parliament rhymes with the Constitution.
In addition, this council examines all the presidential and Parliamentary candidates to determine

With a wide variety in cannabis strains, the side effects of each strain differ from one another based
on many different factors. Attempting to pin point how each strain effects an individual is more

substantially over time and with advances in today s technology growers have the ability to cross
bread plants creating new strain or even create synthetic versions of cannabis. Since it is rather
difficult to pin point the side effects that every strain can produce most of these strains all share
some similar effects as a whole. Physically marijuana can affect your respiratory system causing
respiratory system to become irritated or if ingested can cause nausea and liver complications that
can scar liver tissue. At the same time studies have shown that cannabis can have slight effects on
the immune system, weakening the immune system. Marijuana has also been known to speed up

Introduction According to Christian faith Jesus is the son of God or the son of man. To me He is
my savior meaning he is the one that was sent to die on the cross for me and all of creation. I
believe Jesus was able to feel and go through a lot of the struggles that so many of us go through
every day. Jesus is my healer, he was beaten and bruised and because of it I believe that he healed
me. He was a perfect example of how we should live life, giving the good news that he was sent
by God to heal everyone who was sick, to restore families and households. He gives hope to those
that are poor, he preached that God wanted them to be wealthy and have an abundant life. He did
not come to condemn me but to encourage me. However according the book of Matthew based on
who Jesus is he is compassionate, healer and responds to our Faith.

1. Commitment consists of three elements working together: satisfaction, alternative quality, and
investments.
a) Satisfaction represents the outcomes one receives from the relationship.
b) Alternative quality represents the outcomes one would expect from the next best alternative (e.g.
dating a particular other, dating more than one person).

A Separate Peace And The Curious Incident Of The Dog
A Separate Peace and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time were two very
captivating coming of age novels. Although, while I was reading these novels, I may not have
appreciated them at the time. Now as I am reflecting the themes and lessons that can be learned
from the books, I am noticing just how great these books truly are. Just like all books, these two
books carried important information and experiences that readers can learn from. Even though
these books are both fiction, that does not lessen the importance of the events. The characters in
these books were all so different, but even then, similarities can be listed. Two traits that all the main
characters shared in common was trustand bravery, which is the first and... Show more content on

Phineas and Gene are best friends at the boarding school they attend. This so called friendship is
put to the test after Phineas breaks his leg after he fell off the same tree that Gene just so happened
to be on at the time. It wasn t so much that they no longer had the same friendship that they did
before the accident, instead other people outside of their friendship started to question everything.
Even though they still considered each other to be best friends, and basically acted the same way,
other people were convinced that Gene made Phineas fall from the tree. This action would be a
demonstration of breaking each other s trust. They remained strong throughout all the accusations
and trusted each nonetheless of other people s judgement. So really, both of these novels perfectly
represented the theme of trust in a way that it is held and broken.
Another important theme worth mentioning that A Separate Peace and The Curious Incident of the
Dog in the Night time had in common was bravery, or perhaps courage. The novelthat bravery was
expressed the most was A Separate Peace. The setting of the book was during World War II. That
alone makes bravery and courage such a dominant theme in the novel. The bravery and strength
that it takes the soldiers to go and fight a war everyday is tremendous. Outside of the war and in
the boys boarding school, the bravery that was shown

The Notebook By Rachel Nelson Analysis
Allison Nelson (Allie), in her younger years is described as artistic and energetic. Throughout
the entire book (The Notebook) many characteristics are revealed about her. A bedroom for her
would have to be vibrant and full of life just like her. Growing up with money, she is very classy
so the room would have to reflect that. She s an easy to predict person, plotting the perfect room
for her can easily be done. The walls would have to be a beautiful, light pastel color, nothing
bright or absurd to offset the class of the room. A color that s elegant and soft such as a powder

Famous artworks would plaster the pastel walls. Hanging from the ceiling

Existentialism and Albert Camus The Plague Essay
Existentialism and The Plague
In the mid 1940s, a man by the name of Albert Camus began to write a story. This story he called
La PestГ©. Written in French, the novel became extremely popular and has since been translated
numerous times into many languages. This story has been read over and over, yet it tells more
than it seems to. This story tells the tale of a city gripped by a deadly disease. This is true
enough, but this is not what the novel is about. The Plague can be read as an allegory of World
War II, of the French Resistance against German Occupation. To simplify things, one can say that
The Plague is an allegorical novel (Picon 146). This however, is indeed an oversimplification, and
so this only tells part of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For Camus, on the other hand, a man s acts could reveal an intrinsic integrity or dignity which were
always there but which had laid dormant and unasserted until he was made to face the absurdity of
his mortal condition in an immortal universe
(Masters 107).
Key to understanding this is that the integrity is unasserted. Camus believed that man was more
than just a shell to begin with, that there is some basic worth to a man. Within each man Camus
believed that there is a spark of goodness which only he himself could fan into a flame.
While man may have innate goodness, what Camus saw in the world more often was indifference,
inaction. Mankind failed to act on this goodness. Camus addresses this indifference in The
Plague. Camus wrote this novel during a tumultuous time in history, World War II. Even before
the war had begun, Camus saw this indifference. Camus watched as the nations of Western
Europe sat idly by as Hitler s Germany seized lands, building his Reich. These lands believed
they could ignore the problems Hitler was causing; they believed they could appease Hitler and
leave it at that. Suddenly, France had fallen under German control and England was at the mercy
of German bombers. These events helped to prompt Camus into writing The Plague. The war
which Camus witnessed was transformed into the guise of a deadly disease. However, Camus does
not merely attack the events of one war, nor

Kingdom Of Heaven Essay
KINGDOM OF HEAVEN
Lucas Castelo Branco
HIST 2023

The Kingdom of Heaven is an epic film directed and produced by Ridley Scott, and written by
William Monahan, filmed in Morocco. The story of the Kingdom of Heaven is set during the
Crusades of the 12th century, and is basically about the life of Balian, a French blacksmith, who
defends the Kingdom of Jerusalem against the Muslims and reclaims the city from the Christians.
In this story, I could travel back in time to experience life during the era of the Crusades.
To better understand the Kingdom of Heaven, it is important to know what the Crusades were. The
Crusades were a series of religious wars between Christians and Muslims which started primarily to

Nevertheless, these expeditions influenced great transformations in the medieval world. They
have weakened feudal aristocracy, strengthened royal power, and made possible the expansion
of the market. Eastern civilization contributed much to European cultural enrichment,
promoting intellectual development. Never again was Jerusalem dominated by Christians, but
the movements on the way to the Holy Land expanded relationships with the known world at the
time. The first hour of Kingdom of Heaven is decisive for the rest of the film. It is in these
moments that we will meet Balian, a blacksmith who is devastated after he lost his wife who had
committed suicide. It is important to say that suicide was considered to be an irredeemable sin,
for example, the church believed suicide was a road to hell. Balian has no prospects in life
when he receives a visit from Baron Godfrey of Ibelin. He introduces himself as Balian s father
and invites him to become a knight and defend Jerusalem, ruled by King Baldwin IV, who is a
leper hidden behind a mask of iron. Godfrey knows the difficult moment that Balian is going
through, so he introduces him to Jerusalem (presented in the film as the new world where love
exists instead of hate, a multi ethnic city, sacred to three religions, strategic gateway to the East
and to the West) as a journey of redemption in which his son will redeem himself of his sins and
he will save the soul of the suicidal wife. After speaking this, Balian cannot

The Effects of Advertising Essay
Every time we open a newspaper or we turn on the TV, we see sellers of almost identical products
spending huge amounts of money in order to convince us to buy their brands. Every year, each
typical American watches 1550 hours of TV, listens 1160 hours on radio, and spends 290 hours
reading newspapers and magazines. So every day, each American watches 100 TV advertisements,
100 to 300 ads through other mass media, and in one single year receives 216 pieces of direct mail
advertising, and almost 50 phone calls from telemarketers (Pratkanis and Aronson 2). All these,
because sellers of everything, from computers to detergents, believe that advertising is essential to

Advertising techniques range in complexity from the publishing of simple, straightforward notices
in the classified advertising columns of newspapers to the concerted use of newspapers, magazines,
television, radio, direct mail, and other communications media in the course of a single advertising
campaign. From its unsophisticated beginnings in ancient times, advertising has burgeoned into a
worldwide industry. In the U.S. alone in the late 1980s, approximately $120 billion was spent in a
single year on advertising to influence the purchase of commodities and services.
American advertising leads the world not only in volume of business but in the complexity of its
organization and of its procedures. For these reasons, this article deals primarily with advertising
in the U.S. Modern advertising is an integral segment of urban industrial civilization, mirroring
contemporary life in its best and worst aspects. Having proven its force in the movement of
economic goods and services, advertising since the early 1960s has been directed in increasing
quantity toward matters of social concern. The continuing cancer and antidrug abuse campaigns are
only two examples of the use of the advertising industry as a means to promote public welfare.
Advertising falls into two main categories: consumer advertising, directed to the ultimate purchaser,

The Yellow Wallpaper By Charlotte Perkins Stetson Essay
LENSES The wallpaper in The Yellow Wallpaper is symbolic of the gender based oppression
women of the patriarchal time period of its writing, faced; being infantised, not allowed to vote but
expected to raise the children and take care of the house.
The short story, The Yellow Wallpaper , written by Charlotte Perkins Stetson, is centred on the story
of a woman diagnosed by her physician husband, John, with a slight hysterical tendency, or what
we would call today, post natal depression. As a cure for the narrator s illness, John prescribes
her with the rest cure as a treatment. Essentially, the rest cure is when the patient is assigned total
bed rest in isolation, being over fed on fat laden foods such as cream (based on the belief that the
increase of body volume lead to an increase in energy), massage and often the use of electricity for
hysterical paroxysm. Despite the narrator s belief that congenial work, with excitement and change
would be the cure, she, as a woman living in this male dominated society of 1892, is to follow her
husband s method of treatment. This eventually leads to an increasing infatuation with the yellow
wallpaper in the room of the narrator s confinement and the eventual deterioration of her mental
health and sanity. My hypothesis surrounding the text is that the yellow wallpaper, the narrator
becomes so infatuated with, is symbolic of the patriarchal society the narrator lived in at the time. I
think the encasing like pattern represent

that causes harmful, long term effects on the smoker and all those around him. Unfortunately, non
smokers must witness, experience, and live with the smoke day in and day out. Secondhand smoke
can result in both short and long term health consequences, even though you are not actually

The Use Of Shoplifting And Its Effects On Society
Many people suffer from some kind of mental illness. Often when people are caught shoplifting
they blame it on kleptomania or some other kind of psychological disorder. Most people cannot
fathom the idea of someone accidently placing some merchandise in their pockets and walking
out of the store without paying. This is why it is hard to tell if someone is lying when they say
they have an illness. Not a lot of people call it a crime. Shopliftinghas been linked to impulse
control, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, personality disorders and many others. Most
individuals with an illness steal as a way to cope with unwanted thoughts or feelings. People with
an impulse disorder are unable to resist the urge to steal objects that they may not even need.
Even though kleptomania is one of the illnesses that cause people to shoplift, a vast majority of
shoplifters are clinically depressed. Only very few of the many convicted shoplifters are referred
to the psychiatrist , (Anonymous, 1955, pp. 1422). There are many 12 step programs available for
people that have shoplifting problems. No studies have been done to evaluate their success.
Peer pressure
Everyone knows what it feels like to want to fit in to a group and participate in some kind of
dangerous activity in order to look cool. Peer pressure can contribute to some of the shoplifting
that happens today, especially in the younger crowd. Most people do not realize how serious
shoplifting really is. There s no distinctive type

children were depressed they were thought to be impure and they were sent to a labor camp. But
now they have more knowledge about mental health. They have even set up crisis hot lines, and
China is taking steps to take the pressure off young children. After I read this article I disagree a

Like Wordsworth Keats too believed in the spontaneity of poetic feelings. Keats, in the same
letter wrote the often quoted line: That if Poetry comes not as naturally as the Leaves to a tree it
had better not come at all. (Gittings,70) This is nothing but the statement of an intellectually

profession. He could have earned a handsome amount in that profession. But he gave priority to
his thoughts and feelings and did what his heart wanted him to do. It was not because he was a
failure but because he wanted mental solace and this he found only through poetry. Another reason
behind his leaving the medical career, perhaps, was that he wanted to serve the people through his
writings, for he knew that the mental injuries cause lots of harm than that of the physical. His
thoughts and ideas are better revealed in his work The Fall of Hyperion 1819), where he has

Conquest And The Start Of Colonialism
Conquest In the era preceding the age of conquest and the start of colonialism around the late
1400s was a dark time in Europe both socially and economically. Under the feudalist system,
there was strict social classes which made upward mobility nearly impossible, even for those born
into lower level nobility. Morale was also waning as pestilence and war persisted. The bubonic
plague in the mid 1300s ravaged Europeand by some estimates, cut the population by half. France
and England fought in the Hundred Years War that quite literally meant that the region was in a
state of war for a century, between 1337 to 1453. Additionally, one of the last vestiges of the
Christian Eastern Roman Empire, Constantinople, fell to the Muslim Ottomans in 1453. This
event not only hurt western esteem, but also cut off the major trade route from Europe to Asia.
All of this meant that Europe, both the courts and the Church were seeking a way to increase
prestige and wealth. Conquest was the response, by allowing nations to find new land to possess,
and new resources to exploit, and especially new enemies to defeat. The period in the late 1400s
is sometimes euphemistically called, The Age of Exploration, connoting ideas of discovery,
knowledge building, and awe. In Amerigo Vespucci s (1454 1512) first letter to Lorenzo Di
Pierfrancesco De Medici, Vespucci spends more than half the letter describing the land of the
Americas, often commenting on flora and fauna as a marvel (Vespucci,

Tension In Roald Dahl s Lamb To The Slaughter
Tension is a factor of life that is felt intuitively which means that it is hard to define and even
harder to convey, especially on a page. In his work Lamb to the Slaughter Roald Dahl perfectly
executes creating tension within his writing and in doing so within his reader. In his work he
creates tension through the inner and outer conflicts between characters, the meticulous decision of
characterization, and the conscious choice of places irony in the piece.
In the piece Lamb to the Slaughter Roald Dahl naturally creates tension through the inner and
outer conflicts of his characters. In the work Roald Dahl has the wife character, Mary Maloney,
say to her husband, Patrick, But you must eat! I ll fix it anyway, (3) She says this to Patrick even
after he repeatedly tells her to sit down because he is not hungry. This is the first time Mary
directly disobeys her husband. This conflict creates tension because it finally breaks her Patrick s
thinning patience in the story so far, which leads him to break and tell her news that upsets her.
Roald Dahl also creates tension by having Mary kill her husband, which is a conflict with a
permanent consequence. On page 5 she thinks, So I ve killed him, this is after Patrick admits
something, the details unknown to the reader, that greatly upsets Mary, and the reader s watch as
her honest shock turns into a brief moment of violence. When Mary hits Patrick over the head with

Why Is Self Discipline Is Important, But Do We Really Need...
We already know that self discipline is important, but do we really need it?
We know about success tools, and we familiarize ourselves with many useful resources that lead us
to success, so why do we need self discipline?
We all have goals for many areas of our lives. Some of us wantsuccessful relationships, some like
to get more money, others want simply happiness in their lives and others seek better health with
less weight. These are common goals, and we sometimes fail or succeed in achieving them. The
general question is: Why we don t achieve those goals? Why we don t become successful in these
goals?
The general answer is: Lack of self discipline.
Success needs time. It does not happen at once. What you do today will determine the results in
your future. If you change your present, you change your future. If you eat a lot of pizzas and
delicious food today, you will gain weight, and this will show in your future weight. If you spend
more money than what you earn today, you will have less money in the future.
Present steps determine future results.
Self discipline takes place in your present which will lead to your future.
You can learn many tips and tools for your goals, but unless you take action for these goals, you
will never become successful in reaching them. Almost all goals need efforts and continuity. Self
discipline will enable you to get required efforts and continuity. If you need to lose weight, you
need self discipline among other skills to eat

The War Of 1812 By Andrew Jackson
The War of 1812, perhaps like most wars, may appear to be without merit, ironic and perverse. It
began in response to Britain s policy of impressment, employed to prevent France, its enemy in
the Napoleonic Wars, from obtaining supplies from America, and ended with the reallocation of
British troops to North America after the defeat of Napoleon. The War contained so much irony to
the extent that a truce was declared, but not communicated to the troops in America, before the
largest battle of the war took place at New Orleans. A war that curbed American expansion also
included a general, Andrew Jackson, who parlayed his fame as a general the War of 1812to the

Far from the shores of England, and to a large extent independent from the mother country,
Canada remained reliant upon Britain, at least for its military expertise. Although Britain was
largely preoccupied with the Napoleonic Wars in Europe, its military support of Canada,
especially in the later phases of the war, proved to be decisive in the defeat of the Americans.
Perhaps this is only appropriate given that Britain s policy of impressment of American vessels
and sailors was a principal cause of the War of 1812(Black, 185). To be fair though, American
expansionist sentiment, embodied in the cries of the War Hawks leading up to the War of 1812,
and that later manifested itself in the form of Manifest Destiny contained in the Monroe Doctrine,
was also a cause of the war. Also contributing to the start of the War was the growing expansionist
sentiment in the United States that was based on the idea of American superiority over
Canada(185). This sense of superiority was rooted not only in the ideology of the American
revolution, that republicanism and democracy were superior to monarchy and despotism, but also
in the comparative advantage in population, manpower, financial and industrial strength enjoyed by
America (Creighton,108). To the Americans, Upper Canada was an appealing and exceedingly

Busking in Paris is the second oldest profession in this beautiful city. There are many mistaken
beliefs about buskers. Mostly, buskers are recognized to be homeless, unemployed, drug addicts,

about the Eiffel Tower, which in general every person that has been in Paris will talk about first.
She genially portrays us the streets of Paris, the metro, people and her interactions with people.
Those are easier information s for the lector to relate to than the view of the Eiffel Tower for

Anti Black Racism And The Black Experience
This document is intended to provide a brief look at the historical context of Anti Black Racism as
it relates to the Black experience in general. In doing so, it does not attempt to highlight or
emphasize policing or police oversight in particular. It will, however, help to facilitate greater
understanding of the historical and omnipresent nature of Anti Black Racism in our institutions,
and collective psyche.
The roots and manifestations of Anti Black racism can be traced far back in western history and
cultural practice. Needless to say its continuing impact and repercussions in our modern day public,
private, Judaeo Christian and social institutions and practices, while perhaps, not always understood
or openly acknowledged, is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Plantation slave drivers and overseers have been replaced by public prosecutors and militarized
police, and the human right to life, denied Africans during the 400 years of the barbarity called
chattel slavery, continues to be contested. The racism that informs that contestation defines and
distorts the primary social rations of humanity.
Here in Canada, there has been reluctance to openly engage in similar public discourse and
action. Perhaps from a sense of not wanting to rock the boat , or possibly a more complacent or
self righteous notion that we are not as bad as our neighbours to the south. We celebrate our
diversity but many see Anti Black Racism and diversity as competing or even mutually exclusive.
Some might offer that this in itself exemplifies the way in which Anti Black racism manifests itself
north of the Forty ninth Parallel. Stephen Lewis in his 1992 Report to Premier Bob Rae, just over a
month after the riots on Toronto s Yonge Street, was arguably the first to forthrightly acknowledge
and describe how Anti Black Racism manifests itself. In the first of his four initial observations in
the report, he not only names and acknowledges Anti Black Racism but also delineates the
pervasiveness if its reach in the Black communities with whom he consulted across Southern
Ontario.
It is Blacks who are being shot [by police], it is Black youth that is

Differentiation in the European Union Integration Process
From time to time it is worth reminding ourselves why twenty seven European nation states have
come together voluntarily to form the partnership that is the European Union. 1 Europe has a
history of war and conflict that predates living memory and the idea of a united Europe is
something that appears repeatedly in that history. Hitler, Napoleon, and the many Roman Emperors
all sought a united Europe. Their quests although in many ways motivated by a horrifying desire
for power sparked the minds of philosophers and other political thinkers to imagine Europe united
in harmony and peace despite national differences. Today we have the European Unionwhich is
quite unique. After the horrors, bloodshed, and economic disaster of the... Show more content on

Therefore, member states are making a great effort to be a part of this group so that they to will
continue to move forward and not be left behind. In such cases differentiation allows for more
efficient integration and acts as a motivation for further integration.5 This is also seen in
enhanced cooperation. Enhanced cooperation makes it possible for a group of at least eight
member states to integrate further than the treaties require of them so long as it remains open to
the other member states, and aims to further the objectives of the Union. The group can use the
Union s institutions and mechanisms in order to do this. Recently, ten countries were attempting
to develop a harmonized divorce law because the Union has been unable to agree on one. The
problem with the divorce laws is in the case of couples who were born in different countries and
can shop around for the best place for them to divorce. The European Union has been attempting to
achieve a harmonized divorce law but Sweden has blocked it because it has very liberal divorce
laws and fears unequal treatment based on gender.6 Austria, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Hungary,
Italy, Luxembourg, Romania, Slovenia and Spain have decided to formally request the European
Commission to launch the enhanced cooperation mechanism. This has allowed these countries to
move past Sweden s block of

A Night of Neo-Psychedelia and Paisley Underground
On Saturday May 17th The Vault at Vinyl Revival hosted a night of Neo psychedelia and Paisley
Underground mixed with a little Dream Magic Psych. Additionally we had two guest D J s ,
Eric Slick from Dr. Dog and Dominic Angelella form DRGN KING. They played songs LP s and
45 s in between sets and I had the opportunity to speak with Eric about Dr. Dog and the music
business. He is the drummer and arranged the horns on the new album, B Room. The album is a
group project and is the driving force in the wide range of musical styles on this fine album. It is
disappointing to hear that sales are light, even though, by many standards it is a very good
effort. Folks take our music we make our living touring. Intellectually, I know this, but folks
would not steal tips, a painting, or money, yet feel comfortable taking an artist s work. Thanks
for coming and adding a little more color to a very musically colorful night. Weekender came out
first and set the mood with their dreamy Paisley Underground cuts from their album, Spanish
Peaks. Nick and Eric Sheehan write the music and play drums and guitar. Tom Anthony and
Emily Cahiel added depth with vocals and guitars. Emily s harmony gave the vocals that far off
Blue Oyster Cult feel. I heard a lot of my favorites in their music, The Moody Blues. The Strawbs,
Jefferson Airplane and Blue Oyster Cult. This was most evident in the first song LSD and the Age
of Interest and the last song Spanish Peaks which is also

Literature Review On Impression Management
1. Literature Review
For the purpose of this review, the following section has been broken down into the following three
areas:
1.1What are the origins of impression management?
1.2How is impression management applied in corporate reporting?
1.3Why is impression management used as a means of corporate communication?
Each area will look to assimilate the key items of literature from relevant and appropriate sources
surrounding the fundamental theories and practices of impression management. In doing so, this
review will form the required basis to critically evaluate both the use of impression management in
the context of the 2016 EU Referendum as well as the overall ethicality of the practice.
1.1 What are the origins of impression ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of the taxonomies and methodologies reviewed, four key perspectives on impression management
stand out: Economic, Psychological, Sociological and Critical. Combined, these perspectives of
impression management have defined the majority of academic research undertaken by scholars
and organisations alike (Brennan, Vourvachis, Merkl Davies, 2013). In doing so, they have aligned
several other noteworthy concepts which underpin impression management including legitimacy,
signalling, agency, institutional and stakeholder theories.
Conclusively, it is clear that impression management in practice allows for many opportunities of
manipulation not so dissimilar to Goffman s actor vs. audience analogy. And while this
manipulation itself could be seen to some as encouraging acts of sophism, to others it provides a
useful methodology of communicating potentially sensitive items to audiences of an increasingly
volatility .
1.2 How is impression management applied in corporate reporting?
Having confirmed the origins of impression management, it is reasonable to say that the theory can
be applied as a tool which aids in the manipulation and interpretation of all the data types contained
within the communicative medium of a corporate report. Furthermore, we can deduce

The Philosophical View Of Empiricism
Today in society, many people are free to follow which ever philosophical view that they feel is
right for them. Each philosophical view has a different set of beliefs, and many philosophers
went through great lengths to prove that the philosophical view of their choice was the best one.
In this paper I will be talking about two philosophical theories. The first one is called Empiricism,
and it was made famous by a philosopher named David Hume. Empiricism states that our
knowledge should come from sensory experience, impressions, and observation. The other
philosophical view I will be taking about is called Rationalism. Many people who don t agree with
empiricism lean more towards Rationalism. Rationalism was made famous by a... Show more

With thoughts, your mind thinks about certain feelings, but you don t experience them first hand.
With impression, you experience things such as hearing, seeing, and feeling first hand, instead
of just thinking about them. For example, an impression can be used to describe a man who is in
fit of anger , and a man who is thinking about anger, but not actually in a fit of anger would be
considered to be a thought. A thought can also be considered as an idea. Hume describe ideas as
being less vivacious than impressions . He feels that impressions are drawn from memory or
imagination, thus causing them to be less lively and vivid. Our mind consist of many complex
ideas, and according to Hume these ideas are the things that influence our imagination. He
claims that complex ideas are combined into one big idea, thus resulting to a single idea. For
example, when we think of a golden mountain, our mind use the memories we have of the color
gold, and the memories we have of a mountain, and combine the two into a single image of a
golden mountain. Another example is our idea of God. When we think of the supremely good
and intelligent nature of God, we are doing nothing more than, comparing his goodness to the
goodness of a human beings. Hume claims that we can only have knowledge of things that we
have experienced before. Since a blind man can t see, his knowledge of the colors will be very
limited. The only way

Some are part of the museum s permanent collection (Shipper et al., 2011). Even before other
companies recognized the importance of being green, sustainability and environmental
stewardship were part of the Herman Miller culture (Shipper et al., 2011). Herman Miller became
a founding partner of the U.S. Green Building Council and the Tropical Forest Foundation
(Shipper et al., 2011). The company discontinued the use of endangered wood and chose to use
wood from sustainable sources instead (Shipper et al., 2011). Some of Herman Miller s products
were recognized for use in buildings attaining a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design) certification (Shipper et al., 2011). Environmental stewardship is just a small part of the
values that are important to the Herman Miller culture. (See Exhibit 1.) Each member of the
Herman Miller organization recognizes these core values and are held to these standards from
plant worker to board member (Shipper et al., 2011). Herman Miller saw tough times in the
early 21st century. Sales fell flat as the dot com bubble burst (Shipper et al., 2011). Shortly
thereafter, the events of September 11th, 2001 caused sales to continue to decrease (Shipper et
al., 2011). The difficult decision to abandon the company s long standing no layoff policy was
made to keep the company alive. The workforce was cut by 38% and a plant was closed in Georgia
(Shipper et al., 2011). CEO Mike Volkema and President Brian Walker

Their family have specific ways in which they must carry themselves. Lady Capulet is never seen exhibiting any behavior that could be misconstrued as inappropriate, and is always worried about what others will think. For example, as woman who herself married young, is very eager for her daughter to marry Paris, a kinsman of the Prince. Her only wish is for her daughter to fulfill her duty as a woman in the Elizibeathen Era, which is basically to marry someone of high social status and with a large amount of money. In this, Lady Capulet is portrayed as the submissive wife, similar to the original play does. Unfortunately, in that time, that view of woman came very easily to the actors because it was the view that was held by most then. She always let her husband take the control from her. When she would get mad at her daughter for not obeying, she would let Capulet practically verbally abuse Juliet. She warns Juliet of how mad her father will get, but doesn t discipline Juliet, herself. This is just one example of her stepping aside to Capulet. In the play, it seems that Lady Capulet leaves more of a statement, but in the movie, she speaks under her breath, as though she is scared of her own husband. This is not the only time this occurs. In Act I Scene I, her husband calls for his sword, but she, almost whispering it says that he needs a crutch instead. This, of course, saying that he is too old for fighting in a more playful way, yet her body language conveyed that she felt uncomfortable. In the play, she says it like she is mocking him in a more explicit manner. As one could see, there were only minor differences between the two forms of media, however, the main thing in common is the clear superiority of men over women, and that s something could be brought into the ... • 4. Jay-Z s From The Frying Pan Into The Fire Hip hop is a culture created by people who felt that some aspects of the culture of capitalism did not fit them. Hip hop was able to give them a form of expression, a means of earning and a better representation for themselves. In Jay Z s essay One Eye Open , Jay Z shares his account, as a pioneer of the genre itself, of how hip hop started to gain its popularity and standing back when he was a young child and how it provides the people means to support their needs. In her essay From the Frying Pan into the Fire , Arlie Russell Hochschild shares what does it take to create a culture, she focused on how the capitalist economic systembecame a culture itself instead of supporting one. Although hip hop may have started out as an opposition to some of the values of capitalism, a lot of aspects of the hip hop culture thrive from the capitalist economy, it just follows a different set of rules. Even though many might think that hip hop is a form of art and that capitalism is an economic system, that is not all that they are, they can also be identified as cultural systems. A culture is created when groups of people start to have unique social patterns, like their own food, cloth, language and what not. Another way a culture is created is through rituals and an ideology that a group of people start following. The culture of capitalism was created through the anxieties to which it poses itself as a necessary answer (Hochschild 145). For this reason, what used to be just an ... • 6. The National Football League on Legal Hits The national football league has stiffened its policy on legal hits. The hit zone has shrunk, while player frustrations have grown. The policy is enacted in an effort to reduce the number of concussions in the game of football. The enforcement of these rules has strayed away from being all about safety. The policy on hits has created a divide among its players and fans alike. The policy of hits being enforced so strictly has had a significant impact on the sport. The sociology of the NFL and the rule itself drive this argument. By stepping on the field as an NFL football player, it is accepted that it is very dangerous. The players make enough money to make the concussions worth it. Profiting from the fine money for these hits has caused the NFL to be enforcing these rules unethically, the rules and the impact they have had on the sport have been detrimental to football. The NFL has created a new acceptable hit zone which is very small. Limiting a players area to deliver a hit has created a difficulty for them. Players have had to completely adjust their approach to tackling. Players are becoming very frustrated with the new rules, for example Pittsburgh Steelers player Ryan Clark states ...give a guy who is 200 pounds, like myself, a 2 foot area to stop a guy who is 240 or 250 running at full speed. They might as well just take us off the field... (Patra 1). This is evidence that NFL players are actually getting frustrated with these rules. Ryan Clark is one of the most ... He was an American writer who specialized in writing short stories and romance novels. Among his many works are, The Scarlet Letter, The House of Seven Gables, and Young Goodman Brown. Just like the works of Herman Melville and Edgar Allan Poe, much of Hawthorne s works laid emphasis on the imperfect nature of human beings. The imperfect nature of humans, he believed, was responsible for the tendency for men and women of good hearts to commit sin and fall into despicable situations. I shut my eyes and she was again what she used to be: she was the his of steam, the clink of a cup, she was a certain hour of the night and the promise of rest (Greene 4). In this quote Phuong is being reduced to the sexual pleasure she once gave Thomas Fowler. • 10. Dna Coding For Ampicillin Resistance And Green Fluorescent... Abstract This experiment was performed to assess the efficacy of genetic transformations on bacteria via plasmid DNA coding for ampicillin resistance and green fluorescent protein. Genetic transformation was studied by taking transformed and untransformed Escherichia Coli (E. coli) and placing them on various media to observe geneexpression via growth and color under UV light. The transformed E. coli were able to grow on ampicillin while the untransformed E. coli, which lacked the plasmidgenes for ampicillin resistance, only grew on nutrient broth. In the presence of arabinose, the transformed E. coli glowed green. These results support the previous scientific understanding of bacterial competency, vectors, and gene expression and support gene transformations as an effective method to transfer the desirable DNAof one organism into another organism s DNA. These results can be applied to real world issues such as medical treatments, food production, and environmental conservation. Introduction Genetic engineering is used in health treatments, agricultural applications, and environmental solutions. Genetic transformations incorporate foreign genetic material into the DNA of a different organism via a vector, which carries the genetic material. Plasmid DNA is small, round, and autonomous, due to its origin of replication. In biotechnology, plasmids carry beneficial genes, such as antibiotic resistance, and also a reporter protein, in this case, Green Fluorescent Protein ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If the age was lowered then kids that aren t very mature will become more mature. Lowering the age will also build character. They will realize how hard their parents work and this will make them more grateful and they will want to work harder. This is one of the reasons I think the age should be lowered. Pediatric Concussion and ImPACT Testing Pediatric Concussion and ImPACT Testing The American Academy of Pediatrics estimated in a recent review that up to 3.8 million recreation and sports related concussions occur annually in the United States, although only 300,000 are reported each year ( Concussion, 2012). The brain of a young athlete is still developing, which makes them more vulnerable to the effects of a concussion compared to an adult (Halstead Walter, 2010). The young athlete often neglects to report symptoms of concussion because they do not want to sit out of their sport. This places them at a higher risk for a longer recovery along with more serious consequences if they sustain a second concussion (Ahmann, 2013). A concussion management model provides a medically recognized assessment system that is used as part of overall concussion management protocol. In 2001, the Concussion in Sport Group recommended that neurocognitive testing is one of the cornerstones in concussion management (Solomon, 2014). Neurocognitive, or neuropsychological, testing is considered the core of concussion management models, determining return to play and managing the recovery of the athlete (Duff, 2009). Just like all books, these two books carried important information and experiences that readers can learn from. Even though these books are both fiction, that does not lessen the importance of the events. The characters in these books were all so different, but even then, similarities can be listed. Two traits that all the main characters shared in common was trustand bravery, which is the first and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Phineas and Gene are best friends at the boarding school they attend. This so called friendship is put to the test after Phineas breaks his leg after he fell off the same tree that Gene just so happened to be on at the time. Even though they still considered each other to be best friends, and basically acted the same way, other people were convinced that Gene made Phineas fall from the tree. This action would be a demonstration of breaking each other s trust. They remained strong throughout all the accusations and trusted each nonetheless of other people s judgement. So really, both of these novels perfectly represented the theme of trust in a way that it is held and broken. Another important theme worth mentioning that A Separate Peace and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time had in common was bravery, or perhaps courage. The novelthat bravery was expressed the most was A Separate Peace. The setting of the book was during World War II. That alone makes bravery and courage such a dominant theme in the novel. The bravery and strength that it takes the soldiers to go and fight a war everyday is tremendous. Outside of the war and in the boys boarding school, the bravery that was shown ... • 25. Existentialism and Albert Camus The Plague Essay Existentialism and The Plague In the mid 1940s, a man by the name of Albert Camus began to write a story. This story he called La PestГ©. Written in French, the novel became extremely popular and has since been translated numerous times into many languages. This story has been read over and over, yet it tells more than it seems to. This story tells the tale of a city gripped by a deadly disease. This is true enough, but this is not what the novel is about. The Plague can be read as an allegory of World War II, of the French Resistance against German Occupation. To simplify things, one can say that The Plague is an allegorical novel (Picon 146). This however, is indeed an oversimplification, and so this only tells part of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For Camus, on the other hand, a man s acts could reveal an intrinsic integrity or dignity which were always there but which had laid dormant and unasserted until he was made to face the absurdity of his mortal condition in an immortal universe (Masters 107). Key to understanding this is that the integrity is unasserted. Camus believed that man was more than just a shell to begin with, that there is some basic worth to a man. Within each man Camus believed that there is a spark of goodness which only he himself could fan into a flame. While man may have innate goodness, what Camus saw in the world more often was indifference, inaction. Mankind failed to act on this goodness. Camus addresses this indifference in The Plague. Camus wrote this novel during a tumultuous time in history, World War II. Even before the war had begun, Camus saw this indifference. Camus watched as the nations of Western Europe sat idly by as Hitler s Germany seized lands, building his Reich. These lands believed they could ignore the problems Hitler was causing; they believed they could appease Hitler and leave it at that. Suddenly, France had fallen under German control and England was at the mercy of German bombers. These events helped to prompt Camus into writing The Plague. The war which Camus witnessed was transformed into the guise of a deadly disease. However, Camus does not merely attack the events of one war, nor ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Kingdom Of Heaven Essay KINGDOM OF HEAVEN Lucas Castelo Branco HIST 2023 10/18/2017 The Kingdom of Heaven is an epic film directed and produced by Ridley Scott, and written by William Monahan, filmed in Morocco. The story of the Kingdom of Heaven is set during the Crusades of the 12th century, and is basically about the life of Balian, a French blacksmith, who defends the Kingdom of Jerusalem against the Muslims and reclaims the city from the Christians. Nevertheless, these expeditions influenced great transformations in the medieval world. They have weakened feudal aristocracy, strengthened royal power, and made possible the expansion of the market. Eastern civilization contributed much to European cultural enrichment, promoting intellectual development. Never again was Jerusalem dominated by Christians, but the movements on the way to the Holy Land expanded relationships with the known world at the time. The first hour of Kingdom of Heaven is decisive for the rest of the film. It is in these moments that we will meet Balian, a blacksmith who is devastated after he lost his wife who had committed suicide. It is important to say that suicide was considered to be an irredeemable sin, for example, the church believed suicide was a road to hell. Balian has no prospects in life when he receives a visit from Baron Godfrey of Ibelin. He introduces himself as Balian s father and invites him to become a knight and defend Jerusalem, ruled by King Baldwin IV, who is a leper hidden behind a mask of iron. Godfrey knows the difficult moment that Balian is going through, so he introduces him to Jerusalem (presented in the film as the new world where love exists instead of hate, a multi ethnic city, sacred to three religions, strategic gateway to the East and to the West) as a journey of redemption in which his son will redeem himself of his sins and he will save the soul of the suicidal wife. The Effects of Advertising Essay Every time we open a newspaper or we turn on the TV, we see sellers of almost identical products spending huge amounts of money in order to convince us to buy their brands. Every year, each typical American watches 1550 hours of TV, listens 1160 hours on radio, and spends 290 hours reading newspapers and magazines. So every day, each American watches 100 TV advertisements, 100 to 300 ads through other mass media, and in one single year receives 216 pieces of direct mail advertising, and almost 50 phone calls from telemarketers (Pratkanis and Aronson 2). From its unsophisticated beginnings in ancient times, advertising has burgeoned into a worldwide industry. In the U.S. alone in the late 1980s, approximately $120 billion was spent in a single year on advertising to influence the purchase of commodities and services. The Yellow Wallpaper By Charlotte Perkins Stetson Essay LENSES The wallpaper in The Yellow Wallpaper is symbolic of the gender based oppression women of the patriarchal time period of its writing, faced; being infantised, not allowed to vote but expected to raise the children and take care of the house. The short story, The Yellow Wallpaper , written by Charlotte Perkins Stetson, is centred on the story of a woman diagnosed by her physician husband, John, with a slight hysterical tendency, or what we would call today, post natal depression. As a cure for the narrator s illness, John prescribes her with the rest cure as a treatment. Essentially, the rest cure is when the patient is assigned total bed rest in isolation, being over fed on fat laden foods such as cream (based on the belief that the increase of body volume lead to an increase in energy), massage and often the use of electricity for hysterical paroxysm. Despite the narrator s belief that congenial work, with excitement and change would be the cure, she, as a woman living in this male dominated society of 1892, is to follow her husband s method of treatment. This eventually leads to an increasing infatuation with the yellow wallpaper in the room of the narrator s confinement and the eventual deterioration of her mental health and sanity. My hypothesis surrounding the text is that the yellow wallpaper, the narrator becomes so infatuated with, is symbolic of the patriarchal society the narrator lived in at the time. Often when people are caught shoplifting they blame it on kleptomania or some other kind of psychological disorder. Most people cannot fathom the idea of someone accidently placing some merchandise in their pockets and walking out of the store without paying. This is why it is hard to tell if someone is lying when they say they have an illness. Not a lot of people call it a crime. Shopliftinghas been linked to impulse control, substance abuse, bipolar disorder, personality disorders and many others. Most individuals with an illness steal as a way to cope with unwanted thoughts or feelings. People with an impulse disorder are unable to resist the urge to steal objects that they may not even need. Even though kleptomania is one of the illnesses that cause people to shoplift, a vast majority of shoplifters are clinically depressed. • 36. Conquest And The Start Of Colonialism Conquest In the era preceding the age of conquest and the start of colonialism around the late 1400s was a dark time in Europe both socially and economically. Under the feudalist system, there was strict social classes which made upward mobility nearly impossible, even for those born into lower level nobility. Morale was also waning as pestilence and war persisted. The bubonic plague in the mid 1300s ravaged Europeand by some estimates, cut the population by half. France and England fought in the Hundred Years War that quite literally meant that the region was in a state of war for a century, between 1337 to 1453. Additionally, one of the last vestiges of the Christian Eastern Roman Empire, Constantinople, fell to the Muslim Ottomans in 1453. This event not only hurt western esteem, but also cut off the major trade route from Europe to Asia. All of this meant that Europe, both the courts and the Church were seeking a way to increase prestige and wealth. Conquest was the response, by allowing nations to find new land to possess, and new resources to exploit, and especially new enemies to defeat. The period in the late 1400s is sometimes euphemistically called, The Age of Exploration, connoting ideas of discovery, knowledge building, and awe. We know about success tools, and we familiarize ourselves with many useful resources that lead us to success, so why do we need self discipline? We all have goals for many areas of our lives. Some of us wantsuccessful relationships, some like to get more money, others want simply happiness in their lives and others seek better health with less weight. These are common goals, and we sometimes fail or succeed in achieving them. The general question is: Why we don t achieve those goals? Why we don t become successful in these goals? The general answer is: Lack of self discipline. Success needs time. It does not happen at once. What you do today will determine the results in your future. If you change your present, you change your future. If you eat a lot of pizzas and delicious food today, you will gain weight, and this will show in your future weight. If you spend more money than what you earn today, you will have less money in the future. Present steps determine future results. Self discipline takes place in your present which will lead to your future. You can learn many tips and tools for your goals, but unless you take action for these goals, you will never become successful in reaching them. Almost all goals need efforts and continuity. It began in response to Britain s policy of impressment, employed to prevent France, its enemy in the Napoleonic Wars, from obtaining supplies from America, and ended with the reallocation of British troops to North America after the defeat of Napoleon. The War contained so much irony to the extent that a truce was declared, but not communicated to the troops in America, before the largest battle of the war took place at New Orleans. Far from the shores of England, and to a large extent independent from the mother country, Canada remained reliant upon Britain, at least for its military expertise. Although Britain was largely preoccupied with the Napoleonic Wars in Europe, its military support of Canada, especially in the later phases of the war, proved to be decisive in the defeat of the Americans. Perhaps this is only appropriate given that Britain s policy of impressment of American vessels and sailors was a principal cause of the War of 1812(Black, 185). To be fair though, American expansionist sentiment, embodied in the cries of the War Hawks leading up to the War of 1812, and that later manifested itself in the form of Manifest Destiny contained in the Monroe Doctrine, was also a cause of the war. Also contributing to the start of the War was the growing expansionist sentiment in the United States that was based on the idea of American superiority over Canada(185). This sense of superiority was rooted not only in the ideology of the American revolution, that republicanism and democracy were superior to monarchy and despotism, but also in the comparative advantage in population, manpower, financial and industrial strength enjoyed by America (Creighton,108). To the Americans, Upper Canada was an appealing and exceedingly vulnerable province by virtue of its geography, small population and perhaps even more so because of the composition of that population that included many recent ... • 44. Anti Black Racism And The Black Experience This document is intended to provide a brief look at the historical context of Anti Black Racism as it relates to the Black experience in general. In doing so, it does not attempt to highlight or emphasize policing or police oversight in particular. It will, however, help to facilitate greater understanding of the historical and omnipresent nature of Anti Black Racism in our institutions, and collective psyche. The roots and manifestations of Anti Black racism can be traced far back in western history and cultural practice. Needless to say its continuing impact and repercussions in our modern day public, private, Judaeo Christian and social institutions and practices, while perhaps, not always understood or openly acknowledged, is ... Plantation slave drivers and overseers have been replaced by public prosecutors and militarized police, and the human right to life, denied Africans during the 400 years of the barbarity called chattel slavery, continues to be contested. The racism that informs that contestation defines and distorts the primary social rations of humanity. Here in Canada, there has been reluctance to openly engage in similar public discourse and action. Perhaps from a sense of not wanting to rock the boat , or possibly a more complacent or self righteous notion that we are not as bad as our neighbours to the south. We celebrate our diversity but many see Anti Black Racism and diversity as competing or even mutually exclusive. Some might offer that this in itself exemplifies the way in which Anti Black racism manifests itself north of the Forty ninth Parallel. Stephen Lewis in his 1992 Report to Premier Bob Rae, just over a month after the riots on Toronto s Yonge Street, was arguably the first to forthrightly acknowledge and describe how Anti Black Racism manifests itself. In the first of his four initial observations in the report, he not only names and acknowledges Anti Black Racism but also delineates the pervasiveness if its reach in the Black communities with whom he consulted across Southern Ontario. It is Blacks who are being shot [by police], it is Black youth that is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Differentiation in the European Union Integration Process From time to time it is worth reminding ourselves why twenty seven European nation states have come together voluntarily to form the partnership that is the European Union. 1 Europe has a history of war and conflict that predates living memory and the idea of a united Europe is something that appears repeatedly in that history. Hitler, Napoleon, and the many Roman Emperors all sought a united Europe. Their quests although in many ways motivated by a horrifying desire for power sparked the minds of philosophers and other political thinkers to imagine Europe united in harmony and peace despite national differences. Today we have the European Unionwhich is quite unique. After the horrors, bloodshed, and economic disaster of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, member states are making a great effort to be a part of this group so that they to will continue to move forward and not be left behind. In such cases differentiation allows for more efficient integration and acts as a motivation for further integration.5 This is also seen in enhanced cooperation. Enhanced cooperation makes it possible for a group of at least eight member states to integrate further than the treaties require of them so long as it remains open to the other member states, and aims to further the objectives of the Union. The group can use the Union s institutions and mechanisms in order to do this. Recently, ten countries were attempting to develop a harmonized divorce law because the Union has been unable to agree on one. The problem with the divorce laws is in the case of couples who were born in different countries and can shop around for the best place for them to divorce. The European Union has been attempting to achieve a harmonized divorce law but Sweden has blocked it because it has very liberal divorce laws and fears unequal treatment based on gender.6 Austria, Bulgaria, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Romania, Slovenia and Spain have decided to formally request the European Commission to launch the enhanced cooperation mechanism. This has allowed these countries to move past Sweden s block of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A Night of Neo-Psychedelia and Paisley Underground On Saturday May 17th The Vault at Vinyl Revival hosted a night of Neo psychedelia and Paisley Underground mixed with a little Dream Magic Psych. Additionally we had two guest D J s , Eric Slick from Dr. Dog and Dominic Angelella form DRGN KING. They played songs LP s and 45 s in between sets and I had the opportunity to speak with Eric about Dr. Dog and the music business. He is the drummer and arranged the horns on the new album, B Room. The album is a group project and is the driving force in the wide range of musical styles on this fine album. It is disappointing to hear that sales are light, even though, by many standards it is a very good effort. Folks take our music we make our living touring. Intellectually, I know this, but folks would not steal tips, a painting, or money, yet feel comfortable taking an artist s work. Thanks for coming and adding a little more color to a very musically colorful night. Weekender came out first and set the mood with their dreamy Paisley Underground cuts from their album, Spanish Peaks. Nick and Eric Sheehan write the music and play drums and guitar. Tom Anthony and Emily Cahiel added depth with vocals and guitars. Emily s harmony gave the vocals that far off Blue Oyster Cult feel. I heard a lot of my favorites in their music, The Moody Blues. The Strawbs, Jefferson Airplane and Blue Oyster Cult. This was most evident in the first song LSD and the Age of Interest and the last song Spanish Peaks which is also ... • 47. Literature Review On Impression Management 1. Literature Review For the purpose of this review, the following section has been broken down into the following three areas: 1.1What are the origins of impression management? 1.2How is impression management applied in corporate reporting? 1.3Why is impression management used as a means of corporate communication? Each area will look to assimilate the key items of literature from relevant and appropriate sources surrounding the fundamental theories and practices of impression management. In doing so, this review will form the required basis to critically evaluate both the use of impression management in the context of the 2016 EU Referendum as well as the overall ethicality of the practice. 1.1 What are the origins of impression ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of the taxonomies and methodologies reviewed, four key perspectives on impression management stand out: Economic, Psychological, Sociological and Critical. Combined, these perspectives of impression management have defined the majority of academic research undertaken by scholars and organisations alike (Brennan, Vourvachis, Merkl Davies, 2013). In doing so, they have aligned several other noteworthy concepts which underpin impression management including legitimacy, signalling, agency, institutional and stakeholder theories. Conclusively, it is clear that impression management in practice allows for many opportunities of manipulation not so dissimilar to Goffman s actor vs. audience analogy. And while this manipulation itself could be seen to some as encouraging acts of sophism, to others it provides a useful methodology of communicating potentially sensitive items to audiences of an increasingly volatility . 1.2 How is impression management applied in corporate reporting? Having confirmed the origins of impression management, it is reasonable to say that the theory can be applied as a tool which aids in the manipulation and interpretation of all the data types contained within the communicative medium of a corporate report. Furthermore, we can deduce ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. The Philosophical View Of Empiricism Today in society, many people are free to follow which ever philosophical view that they feel is right for them. Each philosophical view has a different set of beliefs, and many philosophers went through great lengths to prove that the philosophical view of their choice was the best one. In this paper I will be talking about two philosophical theories. The first one is called Empiricism, and it was made famous by a philosopher named David Hume. Empiricism states that our knowledge should come from sensory experience, impressions, and observation. The other philosophical view I will be taking about is called Rationalism. Many people who don t agree with empiricism lean more towards Rationalism. Rationalism was made famous by a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With thoughts, your mind thinks about certain feelings, but you don t experience them first hand. With impression, you experience things such as hearing, seeing, and feeling first hand, instead of just thinking about them. For example, an impression can be used to describe a man who is in fit of anger , and a man who is thinking about anger, but not actually in a fit of anger would be considered to be a thought. A thought can also be considered as an idea. Hume describe ideas as being less vivacious than impressions . He feels that impressions are drawn from memory or imagination, thus causing them to be less lively and vivid. Our mind consist of many complex ideas, and according to Hume these ideas are the things that influence our imagination. He claims that complex ideas are combined into one big idea, thus resulting to a single idea. For example, when we think of a golden mountain, our mind use the memories we have of the color gold, and the memories we have of a mountain, and combine the two into a single image of a golden mountain. Another example is our idea of God. When we think of the supremely good and intelligent nature of God, we are doing nothing more than, comparing his goodness to the goodness of a human beings. Hume claims that we can only have knowledge of things that we have experienced before. Since a blind man can t see, his knowledge of the colors will be very limited. The only way ...
