From hurricanes to blizzards to bolts of lightning, power failures were attributed to an array of damaging events in 2016, taking a toll on the lives of millions of electricity customers. Here, we round up some of the most significant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

9. CREATE COMPELLING COLLECTIONS
The Key Questions
1. What value do you bring?
2. What makes you different?
3. What is your purpose?
4. How do you build?
● Strong Content
● Strong Conversation
● Strong Community
10. CREATE COMPELLING COLLECTIONS
Collections Basics
● Choose the right Collection colour
● Pick 12+ high quality images
● Keep your theme narrow
● Be different!
● Add descriptions that have mood
● Don’t include too many hashtags
● Keep external links to a minimum
12. CREATE COMPELLING COLLECTIONS
Building Collections
● Start with 4-6 images
● Add 1 image every 2-3 days
● Mix strongest and strong images
● Keep some of your strongest
images for later
● If Featured, add strongest images
● Remember to be different!
17. VALUE OF CONTENT CREATION
Content Creation allows
you to merge your daily
experiences in a
personalized way
Use Collections for your personal and
professional growth
18. VALUE OF CONTENT CREATION
Humanize content and catch attention
using images, gifs, videos, questions, or
locations
19. VALUE OF CONTENT CREATION
Involve! Walk followers
further to show insights
● Step by step, explain things in detail
● Explain how these insights are important
● Show how the results achieved have
multiple effects for the future
“It’s always further than it looks. It’s always taller than it
looks. It’s always harder than it looks.” - Reinhold Messner
Expand through great vision
20. VALUE OF CONTENT CREATION
Involve! Create spaces for
thought and conversation
● Give evidence from different sources
● Let your followers observe
● Provide “treasures”
“Google Plus helps me be honest” - David Amerland
“On Google Plus I find really awesome content that helps
me not only for my writing ideas, but for my thinking” -
Teodora Petkova
Involving quality content is recommended to provide
variety and freedom of choice
21. VALUE OF CONTENT CREATION
Involve! Collaborate with others on
Collections for a greater vision or cause
22. SPECIFICS OF THE CONTENT
Focus on content within your expertise,
do your best to make it a vivid and
ongoing story
23. SPECIFICS OF THE CONTENT
Involve! Lead and Innovate, engage
professionally and disrupt!
25. HAVING FUN WITH COLLECTIONS
Let’s think about...
● How to start a new Collection
● How to create quality Collections
● How to maintain and ensure the success
of your Collections
26. STARTING A COLLECTION
How do you create a
Collection and have fun?
Whether it’s your first time or not…
Not a photographer?
Not a blogger?
Don’t use social media professionally?
Or you’ve simply run out of ideas?
NO SWEAT!
KEEP
CALM
AND
CREATE
ON
27. STARTING A COLLECTION
Look around you for the ordinary,
everyday opportunities
Breakfast? Lunch? Journey to work
or school? Like movies, music?
● Think of an idea or theme
● Then come up with a title
● Don’t forget the tagline
● Make sure your theme has
long term potential!
28. STARTING A COLLECTION
Start with the easy stuff!
Rick loves posting about the food
he cooks and eats at home
Here, Zvonimir posts about his
everyday activities
30. CREATING QUALITY COLLECTIONS
Best practices for
sharing pictures or
links from blogs
● Upload a picture on Google+
● Have a clear bold title
● Give a short description
● And then provide a link if
you have one
In my experience, an image
uploaded on G+ is more effective
than sharing a link from your blog
Blog link with 74 +1’s vs.
G+ upload with almost 200 +1’s
31. MOVING FORWARD
How do you maintain and ensure the
success of your Collections?
● Don’t spread yourself too thin
● Post often
● Repost old posts
● Engage and reciprocate
● Reshare
● Collaborate
32. Lisa’s Collection is all about resharing
posts by other food bloggers
Jasmina’s Collection is full of reshares
of beautiful images by photographers
MOVING FORWARD
Build a Community
33. Last Word
Remember...
1. Look at the ordinary for inspiration
2. Words strengthen an image
3. Engage, reshare, collaborate
But most of all,
Just Have Fun!
34. Have questions?
Be sure to watch the YouTube recording of the event, and join the
Collections Community where you can ask questions and get feedback
