Definition of Solid Waste
Solid waste is an inevitable by-
product of human beings,
animals and also of industrial or
commercial activities. It
includes solid & semi solid
materials generated from,
• Domestic, commercial &
industrial premises
• Processes from municipal
services
• Water & waste water treatment
plants
• Air pollution control devices
• Mining
• Agricultural operations etc.
Impacts of Solid Waste on Health
• Chemical poisoning through chemical inhalation
• Uncollected waste can obstruct the storm water runoff resulting in flood
• Low birth weight
• Cancer
• Congenital malformations Neurological disease
Preventive Measures
• Proper management of solid waste
• Involving public in plans for waste treatment and disposal
• Provide the public accurate, useful information about the whole projects,
including the risks and maintain formal communication with public
• Educate people on different ways of handling waste.
Collection of Solid Waste
• Collection of solid waste is one of the
primary functional element of an integrated
waste management system.
• Waste collection is the collection and
transport of waste to the place of treatment or
discharge by municipal services or similar
institutions, or by public or private
corporations.
Collection of Solid Waste
Collection Types:
Classified based on:
Availability of collection services-
• Communal system
• Block Collection
• Kerbside/alley
• Door to door collection
Collection of Solid Waste
Classified based on:
Mode of operation-
• Hauled Container
System
• Stationary Container
System
Collection of Solid Waste
Classified based on:
The types of waste materials collected-
• Primary Collection
• Secondary Collection
Background of Dhaka North and Dhaka South
City Corporations
• In late 2011 Dhaka City Corporation was divided into Dhaka South City
Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) for
administrative convenience.
• Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is situated in the northern part of
Dhaka City which consists of 36 wards. The total area of DNCC is about 75 sq.
km. On the other hand, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) consists of 57
wards within its 42 sq. km area.
Generation of Solid Waste by Dhaka North and
Dhaka South City Corporations
• Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation
(DSCC) collectively generate about 4,634.52 tons/day & 1.6 million tons of
municipal waste per year.
Collection Process Study based on Dhaka North
City Corporation
• Each of the city
corporations was
divided into 5 Zones
for zone wise collection
and transportation of
solid waste in Dhaka
City.
Collection Process Study based on Dhaka North
City Corporation
Following functions are going on
under the Waste Management
Department of the DNCC:
• Ward conservancy activities
• Provide dustbins and other
receptacles for accumulating the
waste
• Giving permission to PCSP
(Primary Collection Service
Provider) for door to door waste
collection from household by van
services
Collection Process Study based on Dhaka North
City Corporation
• Municipal solid waste
has been collected from
twenty different
locations (eighteen
secondary collection
points and two
permanent land filling
sites) of DNCC and DSC
through Site Sampling
Primary Collection Process of Municipal Solid
Waste on Dhaka North City Corporation
• In Some Areas like Bananai,
Gulsan, Mirpur “House to
House” collection system is
practiced. This is carried by
Some Communities. They
provide this facility in exchange
of a little amount by House-
Holders.
Primary Collection Process of Municipal Solid
Waste on Dhaka North City Corporation
• First waste is collected from House in
small Bin, then carried it with small
Van to Big Compactor Vehicle.
Primary Collection Process of Municipal Solid
Waste on Dhaka North City Corporation
Primary Collection Process of Municipal Solid
Waste on Dhaka North City Corporation
• Roadside waste like drain cleaning waste is collected by NDCC in small
van.
Primary Collection Process of Municipal Solid
Waste on Dhaka North City Corporation
• Hospital waste is collected in Separated Big van.
Secondary Collection and Transportation Process
on Dhaka North City Corporation
• There is no specified transfer station in Dhaka City.
• There is specified place in every area where all the waste from that area are
brought, then filled it in large compactor vehicle.
• Then the collected waste is transferred to disposal site.
Secondary Collection and Transportation Process
on Dhaka North City Corporation
• The city corporations are responsible for
secondary waste collection to remove waste
from its dustbins or containers, and transport
the waste to final disposal sites.
• Field Survey found that all garbage of the
DNCC uses Amin Bazar landfill site.
• Figure shows different types of Garbage
Trucks for secondary collection of municipal
solid waste in Dhaka city. For the secondary
collection.
• The government procured 132 modern waste
collection vehicles, including 40 compactors
and 27 container carriers, to retrieve waste from
the collection points and transport waste to the
disposal site.
Waste Collection Capacity of Dhaka North City
Corporation
• From that table it can be seen in June 2012, total waste generation amount
estimated for the DNCC was about 2186 tons/day and DNCC was able to
collect about 1100 ton of waste/day in June, 2012 .
Zone Wise Waste Storage Facilities of DSCC
and DNCC
Total number of waste storage facilities are 1,098 units, which include 341 units
of dustbins, 346 units of containers, 402 Temporary Collection Points (TCP), 7
Trailer Containers and 2 units of 12 m3 containers.
Comparison Between DNCC & DSCC on
Manpower in the Collection and Transportation
Disposal of Solid Waste
Disposal of normally solid or semisolid
materials, resulting from human and
animal activities, that are useless,
unwanted, or hazardous. Such as,
• Garbage
• Rubbish
• Ashes
• Sewage-treatment solids
• Mining wastes
• Dead animals
Method of Disposal of Solid waste
1. Land filling 2. Incineration 3.Vermicompost
Effects of Improper Solid Waste Disposal
• Air pollution
• Groundwater Contamination
• Stagnant water for breeding insects.
• Land can get degraded and poisoned
Disposal of DNCC Solid Waste
• Most of the solid wastes from
DNCC are disposed by land
filling.
• A negligible amount of waste
is used by some public private
organizations for different
purposes.
Dumping of DNCC Solid Waste at Landfill Sites
Management of Amin Bazar Landfill Site
In Amin Bazar landfill site, while
LMU (landfill management unit)
has been organized, staffing is
quite insufficient and landfill
operation is carried out without a
site manager and any specific
operation plan. The management
team comprises,
• managers
• reception and control staff
• dumping platform instructors
• heavy equipment operators
• maintenance staff, and guards
Management of Amin Bazar Landfill Site
The functions of the
management unit are,
• To develop the disposal plan,
• Maintain the daily operation
records, and
• Manage the heavy
equipment operation and
daily cover application
Conclusion
• Dhaka North & South City Corporations are unable to offer the desired
level of services with the existing capacity and trend of waste management.
• Projection of future generation rate indicates that by the year 2020 it may
exceed 30 thousand tons/day, which in turn will require over 200 acres/yr
of landfill area
• Experts have suggested that a community based solid waste management
possible way out of the current inefficient system.

  • 3. Definition of Solid Waste Solid waste is an inevitable by- product of human beings, animals and also of industrial or commercial activities. It includes solid & semi solid materials generated from, • Domestic, commercial & industrial premises • Processes from municipal services • Water & waste water treatment plants • Air pollution control devices • Mining • Agricultural operations etc.
  • 4. Impacts of Solid Waste on Health • Chemical poisoning through chemical inhalation • Uncollected waste can obstruct the storm water runoff resulting in flood • Low birth weight • Cancer • Congenital malformations Neurological disease
  • 5. Preventive Measures • Proper management of solid waste • Involving public in plans for waste treatment and disposal • Provide the public accurate, useful information about the whole projects, including the risks and maintain formal communication with public • Educate people on different ways of handling waste.
  • 6. Collection of Solid Waste • Collection of solid waste is one of the primary functional element of an integrated waste management system. • Waste collection is the collection and transport of waste to the place of treatment or discharge by municipal services or similar institutions, or by public or private corporations.
  • 7. Collection of Solid Waste Collection Types: Classified based on: Availability of collection services- • Communal system • Block Collection • Kerbside/alley • Door to door collection
  • 8. Collection of Solid Waste Classified based on: Mode of operation- • Hauled Container System • Stationary Container System
  • 9. Collection of Solid Waste Classified based on: The types of waste materials collected- • Primary Collection • Secondary Collection
  • 10. Background of Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporations • In late 2011 Dhaka City Corporation was divided into Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) for administrative convenience. • Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) is situated in the northern part of Dhaka City which consists of 36 wards. The total area of DNCC is about 75 sq. km. On the other hand, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) consists of 57 wards within its 42 sq. km area.
  • 11. Generation of Solid Waste by Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporations • Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) collectively generate about 4,634.52 tons/day & 1.6 million tons of municipal waste per year.
  • 12. Collection Process Study based on Dhaka North City Corporation • Each of the city corporations was divided into 5 Zones for zone wise collection and transportation of solid waste in Dhaka City.
  • 13. Collection Process Study based on Dhaka North City Corporation Following functions are going on under the Waste Management Department of the DNCC: • Ward conservancy activities • Provide dustbins and other receptacles for accumulating the waste • Giving permission to PCSP (Primary Collection Service Provider) for door to door waste collection from household by van services
  • 14. Collection Process Study based on Dhaka North City Corporation • Municipal solid waste has been collected from twenty different locations (eighteen secondary collection points and two permanent land filling sites) of DNCC and DSC through Site Sampling
  • 15. Primary Collection Process of Municipal Solid Waste on Dhaka North City Corporation • In Some Areas like Bananai, Gulsan, Mirpur “House to House” collection system is practiced. This is carried by Some Communities. They provide this facility in exchange of a little amount by House- Holders.
  • 16. Primary Collection Process of Municipal Solid Waste on Dhaka North City Corporation • First waste is collected from House in small Bin, then carried it with small Van to Big Compactor Vehicle.
  • 17. Primary Collection Process of Municipal Solid Waste on Dhaka North City Corporation
  • 18. Primary Collection Process of Municipal Solid Waste on Dhaka North City Corporation • Roadside waste like drain cleaning waste is collected by NDCC in small van.
  • 19. Primary Collection Process of Municipal Solid Waste on Dhaka North City Corporation • Hospital waste is collected in Separated Big van.
  • 20. Secondary Collection and Transportation Process on Dhaka North City Corporation • There is no specified transfer station in Dhaka City. • There is specified place in every area where all the waste from that area are brought, then filled it in large compactor vehicle. • Then the collected waste is transferred to disposal site.
  • 21. Secondary Collection and Transportation Process on Dhaka North City Corporation • The city corporations are responsible for secondary waste collection to remove waste from its dustbins or containers, and transport the waste to final disposal sites. • Field Survey found that all garbage of the DNCC uses Amin Bazar landfill site. • Figure shows different types of Garbage Trucks for secondary collection of municipal solid waste in Dhaka city. For the secondary collection. • The government procured 132 modern waste collection vehicles, including 40 compactors and 27 container carriers, to retrieve waste from the collection points and transport waste to the disposal site.
  • 22. Waste Collection Capacity of Dhaka North City Corporation • From that table it can be seen in June 2012, total waste generation amount estimated for the DNCC was about 2186 tons/day and DNCC was able to collect about 1100 ton of waste/day in June, 2012 .
  • 23. Zone Wise Waste Storage Facilities of DSCC and DNCC Total number of waste storage facilities are 1,098 units, which include 341 units of dustbins, 346 units of containers, 402 Temporary Collection Points (TCP), 7 Trailer Containers and 2 units of 12 m3 containers.
  • 24. Comparison Between DNCC & DSCC on Manpower in the Collection and Transportation
  • 25. Disposal of Solid Waste Disposal of normally solid or semisolid materials, resulting from human and animal activities, that are useless, unwanted, or hazardous. Such as, • Garbage • Rubbish • Ashes • Sewage-treatment solids • Mining wastes • Dead animals
  • 26. Method of Disposal of Solid waste 1. Land filling 2. Incineration 3.Vermicompost
  • 27. Effects of Improper Solid Waste Disposal • Air pollution • Groundwater Contamination • Stagnant water for breeding insects. • Land can get degraded and poisoned
  • 28. Disposal of DNCC Solid Waste • Most of the solid wastes from DNCC are disposed by land filling. • A negligible amount of waste is used by some public private organizations for different purposes.
  • 29. Dumping of DNCC Solid Waste at Landfill Sites
  • 30. Management of Amin Bazar Landfill Site In Amin Bazar landfill site, while LMU (landfill management unit) has been organized, staffing is quite insufficient and landfill operation is carried out without a site manager and any specific operation plan. The management team comprises, • managers • reception and control staff • dumping platform instructors • heavy equipment operators • maintenance staff, and guards
  • 31. Management of Amin Bazar Landfill Site The functions of the management unit are, • To develop the disposal plan, • Maintain the daily operation records, and • Manage the heavy equipment operation and daily cover application
  • 32. Conclusion • Dhaka North & South City Corporations are unable to offer the desired level of services with the existing capacity and trend of waste management. • Projection of future generation rate indicates that by the year 2020 it may exceed 30 thousand tons/day, which in turn will require over 200 acres/yr of landfill area • Experts have suggested that a community based solid waste management possible way out of the current inefficient system.
