Samuel Taylor Coleridge was an English poet and philosopher born in 1772 who wrote extensively about his definitions of poetry and poems. He believed a poem contains the same elements as prose but differs in its combination to achieve a different objective. Some of his most famous poems are "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and "Kubla Khan." Coleridge drafted poetry to mimic the patterns of everyday speech and defined successful poetry as having the power to excite readers through truthful adherence to human nature as well as novelty through imagination.

OF POEM, POETRY,
"A poem contains the same elements as a
prose composition; the difference therefore
must consist in a different combination of
them, in consequence of a different object
proposed. According to the difference of the
object will be the difference of the
combination."
