Convention: From sceneryto something behind it -used inthe intro of the song to create a climax to the start of
the music.
4. Code: Rotating overhead view of the sky
Convention: As if looking throughthe treesupwards showing the sky to be‘beautiful’ inan abnormalway creating a feeling of
awe for the what yourseeing and therefore the music video ingeneral. Italso makesthe audiencefeel likethey are looking up
themselves, makingthem feel more involved in themusic video.
5. Code: Costumes are plain in colour and look, earthytones
Convention: Depending on theweather they usually wear a large duffle coat and matching colours to the scenery. Hair is
not usually styled and is allowed the ‘blow inthe wind’ as most are set outside.
6. Code: Theuse of ‘natural’light (or lights that create that effect).
Convention: Depending on thetype of day the music video is set init can changethe intensity of the light, although it is
not often overly bright and the use of naturallight is usuallyto enhancethe beauty of nature(therefore the videos usually
are set at dawn, sunrise/sunset ornightfall to reflect this).
7. Code: Naturalwonders
Convention: This can be anynaturaloccurrencethat seems eitheramazing or doesn’t happen often. Althoughthese may
becreated whilst in editing it makesthe musicvideo equallyas remarkable, and as it shows natureit reflects the IndieFolk
genre.
8. Code: Medium close up to show the artists singing
Convention: Althoughthis music video is between two people (so it also uses a two shot), theIndie Music videos show the
artist singing/lip syncingto their words andmusic to emphasise that it is them doing the hard work and creating the music
and giving the audience a view of who theyare listening too. Byusing a medium close up it also shows some of the
background, and the artist without diminishing them inthe large landscape.
9. Code: Slow motion zooming to the single artist from a long shot
Convention: Thecamera canzoom in or out from the artist but the useof it is to emphasise theimportance of the artist
against the backdrop.
10. Code: Short takes summarizingwhat we’ve seen in the
video so far
Convention: Theshots obviously varyfrom eachmusic
video, but the useof short takesdoes not.
11. Code: Establishing shot
Convention: In this video the shot is verysimilar to the first one we see but it changesfrom night to dawn fromthe
beginning of the video to the end.
By usingan establishing shot it reflects the journeyand changedthat has occurredwithin the music video.
