Evaluation Q1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Genre conventions
 Using Goodwin’s theory of genre conventions, we were able to identify
characteristics of House genre music videos and act upon them. One of
these that we found was the fast pace of the videos with jump cuts, which
was done to give the audience visceral pleasure by watching the video
speed up and anticipate the drop.
 This was also achieved by analysing music videos of the same or similar
genre, such as Televisior’s ‘Find that Someone’ and the original music
video for Madeon’s ‘Finale’. We used this theory to help analyse CD covers
and websites of Madeon’s website and cover for ‘Finale’.
Music video
 We used glitch effects similar to those used in Madeon’s original video to keep up
with the fast pace of the song, while also having a reference to the original video.
Music Video
 We also used fast cuts similar to Televisor’s ‘Find that Someone’ to keep up with
the fast paced video. However, unlike Televisor’s video, we used darker and less
vibrant colours to challenge the norm.
Star Theory
 This theory by Richard Dyer says that there is a
relationship between the audience and the star, and
this is normally achieved by having many shots of the
artist. However the video was more focused on the two
protagonists in the video rather than the artist.
 This convention is common in the house style of music
video as many artists to not put themselves in the
video, seen with Televisor’s, ‘Find that Someone’.
Instead, a house style is followed for the video to be
remembered by.
CD Cover
 The conventions of many CD covers for the house genre use bright colours to
match the house style of the music video. However, our music video uses darker
scenery and is reflected with the CD cover with dark colours.
 Despite this the title and artist are in the centre of the CD cover, which adheres to
the original cover design. The font used is blocky unlike Madeon’s original cover
for ‘Finale’ as the cover was meant to replicate the original few seconds of the
video.
Website
 The conventions of a house genre website
are similar to the CD cover; bright and
colourful to match the genre, seen with
Madeon’s website. It may also include
elements of the most recent album in
order to promote it.
 We included elements of our music video
in order to indicate that the website was
linked with the video. In doing so, we used
less colour on our website by using an
iconic image from the video as the
backdrop for the website. However, colour
was still incorporated into the titling and
was of a similar blocky style of font used in
house genre websites for artists.
