• We went by one archetype in the sense that every acoustic music
video must have the guitar in there somewhere. We decided to follow
it and not challenge it. We had to emphasise that it’s an acoustic
music video using mis en scene. The props and costumes especially
had to convey that it is the music video in this genre. Tom Ryall’s
theory says that “Genre provides a framework of structuring rules, in
the shape of pattern/forms/styles/structures which act as a form of
‘supervision’ over the work of production of filmmakers and the work
of reading by the audience” We used other acoustic music videos as
guidelines in the sense that we let them shape how our music video
would turn up. We looked at how other music videos were made and
used aspects from those in our music video
• Daniel Chandler’s theory said a genre is constituted by the
conventions, theory and style shared by texts belonging to them. I
feel that we’ve generally followed his theory because we didn’t break
any conventions within this genre group. We followed all conventions
because we didn’t want to have a music video that did not match the
genre of the song. The iconography in our products synergises really
well because we kept the colour schemes in our digipack and poster
consistent as well as the fonts. And the colour schemes in those
matched with the music video as the first thing you see in the video
are grey plants. Following his theory and how we let other videos
shape ours, in most acoustic videos you have a guitar included.
Because of that we decided to have the performer play the guitar in
ours. Not just with his theory, but we had to do this because of the
system of expectation. The audience would have expected to see a
guitar in an acoustic music video thus we had a guitar and guitar case
included in almost all our shots
• Where we filmed, the performer was always the emphasis. We didn’t
focus on anybody but him. This is because the song was about a
breakup and the fact that we didn’t film anybody but him symbolises
that he felt alone and isolated, as would most people be in such a
song. The locations of where we filmed further add to that especially
towards the end where he was singing in the green backgrounds, and
when we had the arc shot round him. We had shots taken in the
studio with very low key lighting to create the impression that the
performer is on his own and nobody can help him.
