Coccydynia is a painful condition of the tailbone (coccyx) that can occur due to trauma, childbirth, or idiopathic causes. It commonly affects women around age 40 and causes pain when sitting, rising from sitting, standing, climbing stairs, bending, lifting, or opening the bowels. Treatment may involve NSAIDs, local anesthetics, stool softeners, sitz baths, coccygectomy surgery, or physiotherapy including ultrasound, cryotherapy, a coccygeal pillow, manipulation, and advice on sitting positions.
