This presentation is produced in the DigiCare project go-funded by Erasmus+ Capacity Building for Higher Education, CBHE.
This is the seenth of ten learning packages produced in the DigiCare project as support materials for implementing the DigiCare model and supporting teachers with ready-made materials.
The learning packages are designed to be adaptable to the specific needs of each Higher Education Institution (HEI) and healthcare student group. While they provide essential information, they are not exhaustive in their coverage. Active pedagogical tools are incorporated into the packages, which can be employed during theory lessons. Each presentation includes a Notes section below the slides, offering ideas for teachers and recommendations for further reading.
The learning packages can be translated, edited, and supplemented with additional content as desired. The packages can be used as a complete set or individually, based on the specific requirements of users. Each learning package is accompanied by an introductory slides and the final slide provides information about the subsequent package in the series.

Editor's Notes
Ideas for teachers or presenters
Please, note that the first 5 slides are for the teachers’ information prior to using this Learning Package and implementing this into the course or curriculum.
Ideas for teachers or presenters
Please, use the presentation in the class starting from this slide.
Ideas for teachers/presenters:
Give students some minutes to discuss (in pair, trios, or small groups): What is coaching?
Ideas for teachers/presenters:
Ask the student match COACHING / MENTORING / HEALTH EDUCATION / MONITORING with suitable question
1. What do you need to make the decision to start a healthier lifestyle?
=> Coaching
2. You can show me how you inject insulin and I will give you feedback to…
=> Mentoring
3. Can we review the blood sugar levels you record in your diary?
=> Monitoring
4. To keep fit, you must walk daily for 30 minutes.
=> Health Education
Ideas for teachers/presenters:
- Mentorship, coaching, and advising are well-recognized approaches used by educators to help young healthcare learners accomplish their personal and professional goals and objectives
It is important to distinguish between the primary duties of a mentor, coach, and mentor in the context of higher medical education.
A clear distinction between mentor, coach, and mentor in medical education will strengthen the student learning experience and improve the teacher-learner relationship.
These definitions can also benefit trainers by providing a clear framework for their responsibilities, which can be used to evaluate or identify future promotions.
Ideas for teachers/presenters:
- Coaching is a useful way of developing people's skills and abilities, and of boosting performance. It can also help deal with issues and challenges before they become major problems.
A coaching session will typically take place as a conversation between the coach and the coachee, and it focuses on helping the coachee discover answers for themselves.
After all, people are much more likely to engage with solutions that they have discovered themselves, rather than those that are forced upon them. (2, 3.)
For the medical sector professional coaching is conducted by qualified people who work with patients to improve their efficiency and performance and help them develop its full potential. (2, 3.)
Ideas for teachers/presenters:
Invent some examples or ask students to invent them.
Ideas for teachers/presenters:
- Ask students to describe how you can recognice a growth mindset.
- Discuss about different scenarios about the differences between teacher's and learner's attitude; and healthcare provider's and patient's attitude.
Ideas for teachers/presenters:
Health coaching is a patient-centered and supported self-management intervention aiming at a behavioural change.
Patients are encouraged to be active in participation in self-care based on personal goals and individual motivation to change. (5).
Ideas for teachers/presenters:
Assess readiness to change
Readiness is influenced by how important the behaviour is to the patient and how confident they feel about changing their behaviour.
Using rating questions is an effective way to gauge confidence and importance.
Find out the reasons they want to change
- The patient will describe why change is important to them, and you can reflect these motivational hooks back to the patient to strengthen their decision to change.
Find out about the barriers
- Asking the reasons of their choice can reveal the barriers and reasons why change is not a priority. (3, 6.)
Ideas for teachers/presenters:
- Also referred to as e-coaching
- Healthcare institutions need to integrate the intelligent use of the aforementioned new technologies into their curriculum so that students learn to become allround coaches (using digital and communication skills) to support the self-management of the patients.
Ideas for teachers/presenters:
The use of individual data concerning health brings ethical concerns and challenges, such as data protection, focusing on privacy and security.
