Club culture
Youth subculture
What is it?
• A custom of visiting and gathering socially at
nightclubs or festivals
• Includes socializing, listening to music and
dancing.
• People often go to hear music on a larger
system or to socialise and meet new people.
• These two fundamentals of this youth
subculture make it easily accessible and very
popular with the majority of youths going to
nightclubs.
History
• Club culture started in the 1980’s with DJ-ing and raves and
really took shape in the late 1980’s with an emergence of
underground raves in the usa and London. Lots of social
changes have occurred since then as more and more DJ’s
have emerged and the subculture has become more
mainstream with paid events in established clubs rather than
anti-establishment, unlicensed all-night drug-fueled dance
parties held in abandoned warehouses or an open field.
• From its early roots club culture has involved the younger
people ranging from 16 to 25 years of age but after time the
gap broadened to 35 year olds because of the established
nightclubs and a more mature approach to this once wild
subculture.
• By the 1990s, genres such as acid house, house
music, oldschool jungle, techno, and electronica
were all being featured at raves, both large and
small. There were mainstream events which
attracted thousands of people up to 25,000
instead of the 4,000 that came to earlier
warehouse parties). Acid house music parties were
first re-branded "rave parties" in the media, during
the summer of 1989 by Genesis P-Orridge during a
television interview however, the ambience of the
rave was not fully formed until the early 1990s.

Music
• Club music varies from a wide range of electronic
dance music (EDM), which is a form of electronic
music, such as house (and especially Deep house),
techno, drum and bass, hip hop, electro, trance, funk,
breakbeat, dubstep, disco.
• The music is usually played on turntables or laptops by
DJ’s. this allows for the spontaneous merging of two
tracks which can not only make the atmosphere of the
event more lively but can showcase the DJ’s skills in
mixing songs.
• The music tends to have a strong beat to it allowing
the music to flow through people making dancing
defined and easily done.
