the Western world during the 1950s and 1960s, deriving from rock
and roll.

from other styles including urban, dance, rock, Latin and country;
nonetheless, there are core elements which define pop.
Trends
• Over the years, pop music has changed dramatically, for example
nowadays its a lot louder and also it has become a lot more energetic
and also it has changed and become more electronic and it has
moved away from the conventional, acoustic instruments that were
conventionally used.
Popular artists
• Original pop artists include the likes of Michael Jackson, Beyoncé,
Shakira and Katy Perry. More modern artists include, Miley Cyrus,
Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Lady Gaga.
Audience
• The main, conventional target audience for pop music is the female
genre, usually aged 16-21, however now there is a much wider
audience with the new artists appealing to more people for example
people as old as their 20s and 30s. Also more recently, there is a
wider variety of pop music for males as well. The target audience is
conventionally young, teenage girls because many of the male pop
artists are seen as a figure of admiration by the young girls, either
they aspire to be them or be with them.
