By applying first order principles like fewer suppliers (e.g, less logging frameworks) and image manifests (i.e., bill of materials) he will show how an organization can cut down on bugs and issue resolution times. John Willis will then cover how these principles fit like peanut butter and chocolate when used in an immutable delivery model based on Docker. This presentation was the third highest rated session at the 2015 Devops Enterprise Summit.

Meanwhile, an OpenStack Containers Team was formed and the Magnum project launched to provide users with a convenient Containers-as-a-Service solution for OpenStack environments.
As the potential of both technologies emerged, many wanted to see shared governance over the baseline container specification and runtime technology to ensure an open cloud ecosystem.

Sie zeigten zusammen auf, welche Auswirkungen Container in der Virtualisierung auf den täglichen Betrieb sowie die Performance- und Kapazitätsplanung haben.
Vor allem Docker ist derzeit in aller Munde und die bekannteste und meist genutzte Container-Technologie. Container werden vielfach in virtuellen Maschinen betrieben und stellen eine neue Herausforderung für VMware- Administratoren, aber auch IT-Manager dar. The talk will begin with how to setup a local Docker development environment (Windows or Mac OSX) as Docker runs atop Linux. The basics of Docker will be examined including how to use image repositories, and a brief description of available UI’s for managing Docker containers (Shipyard and DockerUI).
Next, example applications will be built for progressively more robust use cases and deployments; to demonstrate the power, flexibility and scalability of Containerization with Docker. The first example will discuss a simple two container model to encapsulate a database and application layer, which will lead to demonstration and discussion about more robust deployments that include features such as service discovery, automatic load balancing, and abstractions to simplify linking of containers. The context of the talk with be how Containerization enables architectural choice, scalability, and polyglot environments.
Docker and supporting technologies will be discussed to expose the multitude of supporting technologies within the ecosystem such as Flynn, Serf (makes or Vagrant), CoreOS, Deus, HAProxy and more.
Technologies that may be employed within containers during the demonstration include, Java, Scala, Akka, Docker, vert.x or node.js, memcached, mysql, mongo.

1. Reactive:
This kind of monitoring can be achived by the orchestration engine updates the monitoring system.
Example:
Puppet: if any changes to configuration happens it revert back to the actual configuration which management config needs
2. Proactive:
This kind of monitoring can be achived by adding precautionary measures for the known issues, where, if the issue occurs it immidiately starts the precaution to eradicate the fault.
3. Adaptive:
This is better suited for monitoring a frequently changing system like docker containers, as it can adapt itself to the micro services that get intorduced into the containers. Now the question is “Is the adaptive montoring a full solution to the abovementioned challenges?"

- We need solutions at different levels
Containers are lightweight, fast, agile, and solve all dependency issues related to the applications. With such benefits, why aren’t we using containers for stateful apps like databases? Unfortunately, most container platforms treat stateful apps just like stateless, often focusing just on initial provisioning, scale, or failover. To use the cattle vs pets analogy, stateful apps like databases are pets and not cattle. This means losing an instance of a database can lead to data loss, scaling them is not simple, and restoring does not imply simply bringing up another instance on a different host.
In this session, we will review the current state of container support for databases and discuss key aspects of database management like consolidation, data management, node failures, scaling out/back and scaling up/down, etc that container platforms need to address.

A well-architected cloud provides a stable IT environment that offers easy access to needed resources, usage-based expenses, extra capacity on demand, disaster recovery, and a secure environment, but a well-architected cloud does not magically build itself. It requires careful consideration of a multitude of factors, both technical and non-technical. There is no single architecture that is "right" for an OpenStack cloud deployment. OpenStack can be used for any number of different purposes, and each of them has its own particular requirements and architectural peculiarities. The use cases covered in this talk include:
• General purpose: A cloud built with common components that should address 80% of common use cases.
• Compute focused: A cloud designed to address compute intensive workloads such as high performance computing (HPC).
• Storage focused: A cloud focused on storage intensive workloads such as data

This was my presentation at the OpenStack Summit in Hong Kong, November 2013. Learn detail around a unique deployment of the Dell OpenStack-Powered Cloud Solution with Inktank Ceph installed at a large nationally recognized American University that specializes in cancer and genomic research. The University had a need to provide a scalable, secure, centralized data repository to support approximately 900 researchers and an ever-expanding number of research projects and rapidly expanding universe of data. The Dell and Inktank cloud storage solution addresses these storage challenges with an open source solution that leverages the Dell Crowbar Framework and Reference Architecture. After assessing a number of traditional storage scenarios, the University partnered with Dell and Inktank to architect a centralized cloud storage platform that is capable of scaling seamlessly and rapidly, is cost-effective, and that can leverage a single hardware infrastructure, with Dell Power Edge R-720XD servers and the Dell Reference Architecture for their OpenStack compute and storage environment.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
