Machine Learning with Apache Spark

Along with Spark Streaming, Spark SQL and GraphX, MLLib is one of the four key architectural components of Spark. It provides easy-to-use (even for beginners), powerful Machine Learning APIs that are designed to work in parallel using Spark RDDs. In this session, we’ll introduce the different algorithms available in MLLib, e.g. supervised learning with classification (binary and multi class) and regression but also unsupervised learning with clustering (K-means) and recommendation systems. We’ll conclude the presentation with a deep dive on a sample machine learning application built with Spark MLLib that predicts whether a scheduled flight will be delayed or not. This application trains a model using data from real flight information. The labeled flight data is combined with weather data from the “Insight for Weather” service available on IBM Bluemix Cloud Platform to form the training, test and blind data. Even if you are not a black belt in machine learning, you will learn in this session how to leverage powerful Machine Learning algorithms available in Spark to build interesting predictive and prescriptive applications.
About the Speaker: For the last 4 years, David has been the lead architect for the Watson Core UI & Tooling team based in Littleton, Massachusetts. During that time, he led the design and development of a Unified Tooling Platform to support all the Watson Tools including accuracy analysis, test experiments, corpus ingestion, and training data generation. Before that, he was the lead architect for the Domino Server OSGi team responsible for integrating the eXpeditor J2EE Web Container in Domino and building first class APIs for the developer community. He started with IBM in 1996, working on various globalization technologies and products including Domino Global Workbench (used to develop multilingual Notes/Domino NSF applications) and a multilingual Content Management system for the Websphere Application Server. David enjoys sharing his experience by speaking at conferences. You’ll find him at various events like the Unicode conference, Eclipsecon, and Lotusphere. Toward the end of the talk, we will examine a typical Data Analytics system architecture.
Graph representation learning to prevent payment collusion fraud
PayPal is at the forefront of applying large-scale graph processing and machine learning algorithms to keep fraudsters at bay. While deep learning algorithms have found enormous success in the application to unstructured data, their application to structured data, such as graphs, is in the nascent stage of research. One of the emerging research area is graph-based representation learning where features are learned automatically from network structure.
In this talk, I'll present how this emerging area can help to automatically learn features from a large scale payment network. Learned features are used to build machine learning models that are used to prevent complex fraudster activities where they collude with several other actors to commit fraud. I'll elaborate on specific challenges in applying this state-of-the-art machine learning algorithm to large scale payment network. Results from experiments conducted on a very large graph data set containing billions of edges and vertices will be presented.

Building an Enterprise Data Platform with Azure Databricks to Enable Machine ...
At Sams Club we have a long history of using Apache Spark and Hadoop. Projects from all parts of the company use Apache Spark, from fraud detection to product recommendations. Because of the scale of our business with billions of transactions and trillions of events it is often essential to use big data technologies. Until recently all of this work has run on several large on-premise Hadoop clusters. As part of our transition to public cloud we needed to build out an enterprise scale data platform. Azure Databricks is a key component of this platform giving our data scientist, engineers, and business users the ability to easily work with the companies data. We will discuss our architecture considerations that lead to using multiple Databricks workspaces and external Azure blob storage. We will also discuss how we move massive amounts of data to Azure on a daily basis with Airflow. Further we will discuss the self-service tools that we created to help users get their data to Azure and for us to manage the platform. Finally we will discuss our security considerations and how that played out in our architecture.

Real-Time Robot Predictive Maintenance in Action
Industry 4.0 IoT applications promise vast gains in productivity from reduced downtime, higher product quality and higher efficiency. Modern industrial robots integrate hundreds of sensors of all kinds, generating tremendous volumes of data rich in valuable information. However, the reality is that some of the most advanced industrial makers in the world are barely getting started making use of this data, with relatively rudimentary, bespoke monitoring systems built at tremendous cost.
We believe that it is now possible, using a well-chosen selection of enterprise open source big data projects, to successfully deploy Industry 4.0 pilot use cases in a matter of months, at a small fraction of the cost of equivalent projects at leading high-tech makers. We propose to show a working prototype of just such a system, and explain in some detail how it was made.
Our presentation describes a working real-time ML-based anomaly detection system. We show a working industrial robot-analog installed with a wireless movement sensor. Our system scores the data in a cloud-based cluster. For added realism, the system we demonstrate live includes a working augmented-reality headset that can show the real-time status overlaid on the working robot.
This talk is about demonstrating a concrete example of a real-time predictive maintenance system, built as a series of microservices connected by Kafka streams and powered by the excellent H2O distributed Machine Learning tool. Our goal is for our attendees to get a feel for what can be realistically achieved by a few non-genius-level engineers in a few months of effort using the best in open source technology for real-time streams (Kafka) and Machine learning (H2O).
Where appropriate, we’ll mention how our choice of using the MapR Converged Data Platform made the development easier thanks to some of its unique features.

At Sams Club we have a long history of using Apache Spark and Hadoop. Projects from all parts of the company use Apache Spark, from fraud detection to product recommendations. Because of the scale of our business with billions of transactions and trillions of events it is often essential to use big data technologies. Until recently all of this work has run on several large on-premise Hadoop clusters. As part of our transition to public cloud we needed to build out an enterprise scale data platform. Azure Databricks is a key component of this platform giving our data scientist, engineers, and business users the ability to easily work with the companies data. We will discuss our architecture considerations that lead to using multiple Databricks workspaces and external Azure blob storage. We will also discuss how we move massive amounts of data to Azure on a daily basis with Airflow. Further we will discuss the self-service tools that we created to help users get their data to Azure and for us to manage the platform. Finally we will discuss our security considerations and how that played out in our architecture.

Real-Time Robot Predictive Maintenance in Action
Industry 4.0 IoT applications promise vast gains in productivity from reduced downtime, higher product quality and higher efficiency. Modern industrial robots integrate hundreds of sensors of all kinds, generating tremendous volumes of data rich in valuable information. However, the reality is that some of the most advanced industrial makers in the world are barely getting started making use of this data, with relatively rudimentary, bespoke monitoring systems built at tremendous cost.
We believe that it is now possible, using a well-chosen selection of enterprise open source big data projects, to successfully deploy Industry 4.0 pilot use cases in a matter of months, at a small fraction of the cost of equivalent projects at leading high-tech makers. We propose to show a working prototype of just such a system, and explain in some detail how it was made.
Our presentation describes a working real-time ML-based anomaly detection system. We show a working industrial robot-analog installed with a wireless movement sensor. Our system scores the data in a cloud-based cluster. For added realism, the system we demonstrate live includes a working augmented-reality headset that can show the real-time status overlaid on the working robot.
This talk is about demonstrating a concrete example of a real-time predictive maintenance system, built as a series of microservices connected by Kafka streams and powered by the excellent H2O distributed Machine Learning tool. Our goal is for our attendees to get a feel for what can be realistically achieved by a few non-genius-level engineers in a few months of effort using the best in open source technology for real-time streams (Kafka) and Machine learning (H2O).
Where appropriate, we’ll mention how our choice of using the MapR Converged Data Platform made the development easier thanks to some of its unique features.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code Analysis
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.
