Climate change and
global warming
Climate change definition
 Climate change is a long term process that occurs
over a large area and is measured over a long
period of time.
 Climate change is also the average of many years
of weather observation.
 Weather is a short term change of temperatures.
Factors that affect climate.
 There are abiotic factors and biotic factors that
affect climate.
 Abiotic factors which affect climate are: latitude,
altitude, ocean currents, topography, solar
radiation, evaporation, and volcanic activities.
 Biotic factors that affect climate are:
transpiration, respiration, photosynthesis,
digestion and decomposition.
Effects of climate change
 The earth is getting warmer and warmer resulting
in changes that we can see.
 These are the effects of climate change.
 Glaciers and ice caps are melting due to the rising
temperatures of the earth. This leads to rising sea
levels.
 Animals such as bears will become extinct
because the glaciers are melting and they can not
live in land.
Melting ice caps
Global warming definition
 Global warming is an average increase in the
temperature of the atmosphere near the Earth’s
surface. It contributes to changes in global
climate patterns.
 Global warming is also the rise of average
temperature of earth’s atmosphere and the
oceans.
Causes of Global warming
 Global warming is caused by the following:
 The burning of fossil fuels such as coal to generate
electricity in power plants.
 Transportation fuels such as LPG, kerosene and fuel
oil.
 Industrial processes such as manufacturing of cement,
steel and aluminium.
 And other green house gases emissions such as
forestry, agriculture and waste management.
Causes of global warming
continued
 Deforestation causes global warming.
 Deforestation is the cutting down of trees to develop the
area.
 Massive deforestation could lead to less carbon dioxide
(CO2) being absorbed (for photosynthesis process) and
causing much more of the greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere.

Effects of global warming
 Severe changes in weather: the temperature of
the earth has risen to 14.57 degrees Celsius.
 Rise in temperature was noticed by unusually
severe weather in many parts of the world.
 It could raise sea levels for islands and low level
coastal areas.
Effects of global warming
continued
 The impacts on the ecosystem: ecosystems that
sustain organisms that live in ice are affected by
the rising temperature which results in the ice
melting and decreasing the size of the organisms
living in these areas.
 The layer of permafrost is melting, causing an
inland lake to drain into the ocean and killing
fresh water fish.
Effects of global warming
continued
 Rise In Sea Levels Worldwide due to the melting ice caps
of the arctic and Antarctic.
