CLIMATE CHANGES
AND
BIODIVERSITY
Mr. K. MUHAMMED SHARIQ M.Sc.,
Assistant Professor
Department of Biochemistry
Islamiah College (Autonomous)
INTRODUCTION
 CLIMATE CHANGES CAUSING GREEN HOUSE EFFECTS
 CONSEQUENCES OF CLIMATE CHANGES
 WHAT IS BIODIVERSITY?
 BIODIVERSITY AND ITS IMPACTS
CONCLUSION
Introduction
 Climate change refers to any significant change in the
measures of climate lasting for an extended period of time. In
other words, climate change includes major changes in
temperature, precipitation, or wind patterns, among other
effects, that occur over several decades or longer.
 Biodiversity is the shortened form of two words "biological"
and "diversity". It refers to all the variety of life that can be
found on Earth (plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms)
as well as to the communities that they form and the habitats
in which they live.
CLIMATE CHANGES
 The term "climate change" is often used to refer specifically to
anthropogenic climate change (also known as global warming).
Anthropogenic climate change is caused by human activity, as
opposed to changes in climate that may have resulted as part of
Earth's natural processes.
Food and fresh water disrupted
Millions of people displaced
Disease altered dangerously
BURNING OF FOSSIL FUELS
REEN HOUSE EFFECTS
Millions of people displaced
THE MORE GREEN HOUSE GASES IN THE
ATMOSPHERE TEMPRATURE INCREASES
CONSEQUENCES OF CLIMATE CHANGES
The extra glaciers causes the sea level to raise up
and floods occurs through out the region
warmer temperature make weather and growing
crops more difficult and water supply is reduced
In urban areas, warmer atmosphere causes ‘smog’
One of the most Important use of biodiversity
is providing life food
It also has an adverse affect on human health
It causes disease such as Asthma, lung cancer
Biodiversity - Diversity with in the species between
the species and of ecosystem
 1916 - The term biological diversity was used first by J. Arthur
Harris in "The Variable Desert," Scientific American, "The bare
statement that the region contains a flora rich in genera and
species and of diverse geographic origin or affinity is entirely
inadequate as a description of its real biological diversity."
 1975 - The term natural diversity was introduced (by The
Science Division of The Nature Conservancy in a 1975 study,
"The Preservation of Natural Diversity.")
 1980 - Thomas Lovejoy introduced the term biological
diversity to the scientific community in a book.It rapidly became
commonly used.
 1985 - According to Edward O. Wilson, the contracted
form biodiversity was coined by W. G. Rosen: "The National
Forum on BioDiversity ... was conceived by Walter G.Rosen ... Dr.
Rosen represented the NRC/NAS throughout the planning
stages of the project. Furthermore, he introduced the
term biodiversity".
 1985 - The term "biodiversity" appears in the article, "A New
Plan to Conserve the Earth's Biota" by Laura Tangley.
 1988 - The term biodiversity first appeared in a publication.
 The present - the term has achieved widespread use.
Types of Biodiversity
 Genetic Biodiversity
 Species diversity
 Ecosystem Diversity
Distribution of Biodiversity-Flora and Fauna
diversity depends on
 Climate
 Altitude
 Soils
 Presence of other species
 Most of the biodiversity concentrated in tropical region
Ecological Services:
 Balance of nature
 Biological Productivity
 Regulation of climate
 Degradation of waste
 Cycling of Nutrients
 Detoxification of soil
 Stabilization of land against erosion
 Maintenance of soil fertility
Snakes feed with rats, if we kill
snakes we will be end up living terrible rat
problem
Conservation of Biodiversity
 Biodiversity inventories
 Conserving Biodiversity in protecting habitats
 In Situ Conservation
 Ex Situ Conservation
 Seed bank, Gene bank, Pollen bank, DNA bank.
 Restoration of Biodiversity
 Population control
 Controlling Urbanization
Conclusion
 Biodiversity is our life. If the Biodiversity got lost at this rate
then in near future, the survival of human being will be
threatened. So, it is our moral duty to conserve Biodiversity as
well our Environment. Long- term maintenance of species and
their management requires co-operative efforts across entire
landscapes.
 Usually it is used in a context that stresses the need for
attention on our living environment and the sustainable use of
natural resources.
