This document discusses the basic rules of composition that make for a good photograph. It lists 13 elements of good composition including using the rule of thirds, simplicity, lines, shapes and forms, symmetry or asymmetry, color schemes, contrast, and framing. The rule of thirds involves placing subjects near the intersection points of an imaginary three-by-three grid overlaid on the frame to make photos more visually interesting. Other tips include using lines, diagonals and curves to direct the eye; positive and negative space; repetition; contrast; informal balance; and leaving space in front of a subject to imply movement.
