Citing web sources: Teacher demonstration (Intermediate)
A curriculum for critical thinking and web research
                                                                               This plan is part of a

                 High school (14–18 years old)                           developed by the International
     This demonstration provides the information required for          Society for Technology in Education
     documenting web sources. The demonstration is broken                     (ISTE) and Microsoft.
                                                                      www.microsoft.com/ education/criticalthinking
     into two parts, the Modern Language Association (MLA)
     format and the American Psychological Association (APA)
     format. You may complete one or both.

     Standard MLA format
     Last name, first name. “Title of webpage.” Title of website. Date published or last revised.
     Publishing organization or owner, date retrieved. <Web URL>.
         1. Review the information required for citing web sources.
         2. The teacher asks that the students complete independent research on the life of
             different artists.
             a.   It can be specific information, such as the type of art they created, or more
                  general information about the artist’s life.
         3. The teacher reminds the class to evaluate whether the webpages are valid and
             reliable, in addition to whether they contain pertinent information.
         4. The teacher explains to the students that they will research this information online
             using the Bing™ search engine and that they will document the websites where the
             information for each artist is found on “Citing web sources – Student worksheet –
             MLA 3: Locating information to cite web sources.”

         5. After students have completed “Citing web sources – Student worksheet –
            MLA 3: Locating information to cite web sources,” organize them in pairs or small
            groups to compare the sources that they documented for each artist.

Last name, first name. (Date published). Title of web document. Retrieved from web URL.
     1. Review the information required for citing web sources.
     2. The teacher asks the students to research the life of different historical figures
          from the Civil War.
          a.    The students locate a brief description of these figures’ involvement in the war.
     3. The teacher reminds the class to evaluate whether the webpages are valid and
          reliable, in addition to whether they contain pertinent information.

Citing web sources: Teacher demonstration (Intermediate) A curriculum for critical thinking and web research This plan is part of a Skill level: Intermediate critical thinking and web School level: Middle school (11–13 years old) research curriculum High school (14–18 years old) developed by the International This demonstration provides the information required for Society for Technology in Education documenting web sources. It can be specific information, such as the type of art they created, or more general information about the artist’s life. 3. The teacher reminds the class to evaluate whether the webpages are valid and reliable, in addition to whether they contain pertinent information. 4.
