The French Cinema Club showed French films with English subtitles to higher-level students to help them learn about French culture and associate language learning with fun. The club ran from October 2015 to May 2016. Watching the films helped students realize the importance of language learning to access other cultures, gain confidence in their abilities even with limited French, and discover another aspect of France beyond the classroom. Quotes from a student and teacher affirmed that the films improved language and cultural knowledge and the student looked forward to a time when subtitles would not be needed.

Museum Quiz
The pupils completed a French quiz about French paintings at the Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow. The quiz questions covered vocabulary they had learned in class, such as numbers, descriptions of people, and colors, but in the context of art. Students from Meadowhead Community Learning College participated in a cultural exchange activity called Comenius Legends Across Europe. When asked about their experiences, students most enjoyed meeting new people from Finland and Spain and learning about their cultures. They learned about legends from other countries as well as their own. The most difficult part was saying goodbye to their exchange partners and new friends from other countries when the activity ended. For future activities, students would like more time with the exchange partners to get to know them better.

Balancing the amount of typical cultural themes in language learning materials
Fryslân is a province in the north of the Netherlands where the two official languages are spoken: Dutch and Frisian. Of the 620,000 inhabitants of Fryslân about 55% consider Frisian as their mother tongue. Frisian language is an obligatory part of the curriculum in primary education and in early secondary education. Afûk is the publisher of educational materials for Frisian language learning in education. They provide coherent packages of subject-related paper based learning materials, but also a digital learning environment. Looking at theme’s within these materials, it is clear that typical cultural themes of the Frisian culture - such as typical sports, the history and the environment - take an important role. On the other hand many themes within the educational materials do not have that specific emphasize on the Frisian culture. In this session the presenters will argue pros and conns of using typical cultural themes for language learning. The dilemma between conserving and passing thru culture versus the use of language that is focused on present and future will be the focus of debate. There will be room for discussion as the presenters are curious about how other regions deal with this and how a balance could be found.

Relevance to CfE capacities This project helped students to: - Realise the importance of language learning: the students saw it was interesting for them to learn a new language because they could discover a whole new culture, especially as a cinema lover, since French cinema is very diverse and produces quality pieces. - Become more confident in their capacities: students recognised that even if their French was not the best, they could still follow the story with context and transparent words, or help themselves with the English subtitles, and even learn new vocabulary thanks to it. - Learn more about French culture: students discovered an aspect of France that they didn’t get to see in class and learned that French could be fun too.
- 3. Quotes from learners/teachers 3 Watching French films has improved my knowledge of not just culture, but also the language, as it required me to listen in order to understand a lot of things. I really enjoyed watching the films, especially ‘Eyes without a Face’ as it is a classic of the horror genre. I am confident that one day I will be able to watch French films without English subtitles, which is great, because it is possibly the best way to learn the language!
