To become mature readers, children need opportunities to
respond to
a variety of reading materials. Your role in to encourage but
never
force response, to offer activities that will allow children to
activity
respond to a selection.
Remind your self that your goal is not polished dramatic
production but
a group of children enjoying an experience with a fine story.
- Listening to a good story read loud has a pleasurable
experience,
listening can also provide natural opportunities for development
of a
listening vocabulary.
- When you read to a children, you give them a chance to hear an
author’s style, to identify well developed characters, and
sometimes to
try to predict the directions the plot will take.
- Most important of all, you help them to know good books and
poems
in a relaxed, warm atmosphere.
- Choose characters who will interest listeners and whose
dialog will be
interesting and comfortable for you to read.
- Choose a plot or an organizational scheme that moves at a
pace fast enough to keep reader attention, exercising your
judgment about what may appeal to the group and keeping in
mind age, past experiences, and interests.
When you have chosen a story that is right for you and your
children, you are ready to begin preparing to read aloud.
Pre-viewing or studying a selection in advance, will call your
attention to the general tone the author uses.
Pre-viewing should also show you the personality traits of the
story characters so you can use the information in you
interpretation of dialog
It is one of the literary forms most often read aloud. Its surely
deserves to be.
Poetry must be read to children who are not fluent enough
readers to appreciate there own poetry reading.
Responses to the oral reading of a story or poem are usually
spontaneous.
Many of the responses are likely to reflect emotional
involvement with the selection as it is being read.
Reading aloud may generate many kinds of responses.
1 – choose a story that you like. If you enjoy the story, you will
be able to infuse it with your special insight.
2 – know the story well enough to be comfortable with it and
avoid to worry about lapse of memory.
3- when you tell a story, it is important to establish a
relationship with the audience so that they will share the mood
of the story with you.
The easiest stories to begin with are folk tales.
They are easy because they were created orally by story tellers.
And have perfect form narration.
You must see the characters, some in more detail than others,
depending upon how dramatic their words or their roles are in
the tale.
Visualizing them helps in characterizing them. So if you see the
sneering faces of Cinderella's sisters, something of the sneer
gets into you interpretation of their words and behavior.
Discussion can serve many purposes.
They give children opportunity to express their feeling about a
story or poem.
The give and take of discussion may help children interpret the
meaning of a selection.
Provides marvelous opportunities for children to interact with
literature.
They are especially good for young children who are able to
respond physically even though they may not be able to
respond.
