• At least 3-5 materials are required within this activity center
• There must be enough books within easy reach, available for at
least an hour per day and must be enough for at least half the
number of children who are allowed to attend on any day
• Ways to accommodate for children with disabilities include:
providing text-to-speech audio tapes, providing in large print,
providing a designated reader
• Adding soft cushioning to help children who aren't comfortable

Diversity
I will ensure that most diversity categories are represented
in the learning center by including readings of individuals
with disabilities, different cultural backgrounds (adding
books that are of historical and contemporary stories about
people from different races and cultures) and adding books
of different languages even if they are available in English.
Skills & Ability Development
• Understanding words are read from left to right
and pages are read from top to bottom
• Recognizing about half of the alphabet
• Start matching letters to sounds
• May start to recognize their name in print and
other words seen a lot such as on signs and
logos
• Start noticing words that rhyme
Teacher's role
• Teacher and staff should be encouraging but not
forceful, meaning that the activity is voluntary and can
leave if they are no longer interested
• Teachers should read in small groups, a large group
would not count as an appropriate social setting
• Teachers should also have a warm and comfortable
affect/tone such as sitting close to the children while
reading, using the books only with children who are
Teacher's Role (Continued)
• Teachers and staff should also be interactive. This
includes making sure each child can clearly see
and hear the story, allowing time for the child or
children to make comments or point to pictures as
the book is read, encouraging children to turn
pages or help in reading the book by supplying
words, asking children to select the book to be
read, asking simple questions about the book and
Milestones
From ages 3-5
kids usually begin
to:
• Explore books
independently
• Recognize familiar
signs and labels
• Write their names
• Produce words that
rhyme
