On May 27 2021, the Child Protection and Gender sections at NYHQ and UNICEF Innocenti organised an internal webinar on UNICEF’s Strategy Paper on the Gender Dimensions of Violence against Children and Adolescents in which over 200 UNICEF colleagues from regional and country levels participated. The webinar aimed to help participants learn more about the strategy paper and provided an opportunity to share ideas and recommendations for the implementation of priority actions in this area.

This event focused on sharing lessons on the implementation and contextualization of Smart Buys evidence at country level by the Global Education Evidence Advisory Panel (GEEAP). Kwame Akyeampong from The Open University and GEEAP co-chair facilitated the conversation and introduced the Smart Buys. Rachel Glennerster the Chief Economist at the FCDO, Thomas Dreesen from the UNICEF Office of Research – Innocenti and Halsey Rogers from the World Bank provided a deeper dive into the findings of the Smart Buys report. Noam Angrist from the World Bank, Oxford and Yong 1ove introduced a country contextualization approach, while Moitshepi Matsheng from Young 1ove and Chairperson of the Botswana National Youth Council shared a real world example of this contextualization process from Botswana.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

This isn’t about working separately with a whole bunch of researchers and organisations to strengthen everyone’s research dissemination plans. The research projects already have their own research uptake components. What we will be doing is providing spaces, opportunities, and products that bring together common themes and help join them up to relevant audiences.
It combines our (Cambridge and IDS) strengths in knowledge mobilisation and research. It comes at a time when IDS is implementing a new structure with more integration of our knowledge processionals with our research clusters and Cambridge has recently launched its Research Centre for Equality in Education and International Development
Obviously a great opportunity to make a real contribution to research uptake but also a really good opportunity to make an important contribution to the debate and knowledge around the impact of the social sciences on development.
TALS will offer an advisory role helping to identify key research and policy agendas and influencing and engagement opportunities. They also lend to the EPD academic credibility and access to key networks.
Plus there is a much wider technical pool based at IDS - many joining us over the two days – covering areas like publications, web and online services, training and capacity building, media, social media, communications and uptake strategy, events and so on.
Outcome: Academic and policy discourses will be bridged in key areas, and closer connections will be forged between individual grantees, between the programmes and with policy and practitioner audiences.

Learning exchange workshops and seminars - Disability workshop included around 25 researchers from seven projects funded under the ESRC-DFID Strategic Partnership, with participants from India, Kenya, Malawi, Uganda and the UK.
