The Reserve Bank of India introduced the Cheque Truncation System (CTS) to facilitate faster clearing of cheques. Under CTS, cheque images and details are captured electronically at the collecting bank and transmitted instead of physically moving the cheques. This eliminates the need to transport physical cheques, reducing clearing time from an average of 3 days to 1 day and lowering costs. CTS benefits banks by saving time, money and resources spent on physical cheque movement and clearing while reducing the possibility of cheque fraud and loss.
